Former U.S. president George W. Bush garners noisy protest in Edmonton

EDMONTON — While former U.S. president George W. Bush talked about democracy inside a downtown Edmonton conference centre on Tuesday, hundreds of protesters were outside exercising their right to free speech with signs, songs and screams.

"Stop the killing, stop the war," the protesters chanted to the beat of a drum. They held signs that said "Bush is a war criminal;" "Bush lied, 1,000s died;" and "Canada is not Bush Country."

Several dozen police officers kept protesters away from the front of the Shaw Conference Centre and as the crowd grew, metal barricades went up between the police and the crowd.

Marilyn Gaa, who holds both American and Canadian citizenship, held a three-metre-tall black-clad Grim Reaper with a sign on his back that said: "GWB I am your biggest fan" and on the front, "Thanks for 8 great years."

"For the eight years that George Bush was president I was profoundly ashamed and alarmed and angry and now it seems so unfair that he's making a world tour trying to share his 'wisdom' and make a lot of money," said Gaa.

Edmonton businessman Aroon Sequeira saw it differently.

"I think people are entitled to voice their opinions and I'm equally interested in hearing what president Bush has to say inside."

The bipartisan consensus that encourages unaccountable secret state agencies to illegally spy on the American people under color of a limitless, and highly profitable, "war on terror" was dealt a (minor) blow October 13.

Federal District Court Judge Jeffrey White denied a motion by the Obama administration that the court issue a 30-day stay to "release records relating to telecom lobbying over last year's debate over immunity for corporate participation in government spying," the Electronic Frontier Foundation reported.

The Justice Department had argued that the Bush, and now, the Obama administration's Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and Congress were exempt from releasing lobbying records under the Freedom of Information Act, since consultations amongst said grifters were protected as "intra-agency" records.

One might add, since the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, a well-funded surveillance-industrial-complex fueled by giant defense firms and the telecommunications industry have, as investigative journalist Tim Shorrock reported back in 2005 "fielded armies of lobbyists to keep the money flowing."

I'm not affiliated with WaPo, but have a very different viewpoint. As to the contest being open only to people who don't contribute to a major national publication, I think it's terrific that they're looking for amateurs instead of the "villagers" who are always criticized at C&L. And as for the guys in the video implying that the average blogger has "access" to as many eyeballs as a columnist for WaPo, what a joke. How many readers does the average blogger get per day? 10? 20? And that includes relatives.

It seems to me that the contest is a great opportunity to place a blogger, maybe a commenter to C&L, with a very different perspective than the MSM villagers, right inside the MSM where he or she can shake things up, offer some fresh facts and opinions, and get his or her points across to lots of people who might not normally be exposed to that perspective. That seems like a win-win for the blogosphere to me.

On a related note, a gas pump near me had an anti-"cap and trade" banner which argued that I'd be ripped off by paying 77 cents more per gallon, and which I'm sure wasn't sponsored by a faceless corporation which doesn't want to do anything about global warming. It's also funny that they didn't care about that kind of thing last year...Homes will continue to lose value. Twenty-three states have had higher unemployment in September. Waddya know? Diplomacy works. Biracial children don't have it that bad. Colleges look for more ways to make education worth somethig, other than actually justifying higher costs. Obama apparently agrees with me on the subject. Gates wants permanent occupation of Okinawa. Cali sues a bank over pension fraud. Barry swears we're leaving Iraq, so why does he still care about elections? Barry also talks tough against firms which got bailed-out by giving them smaller bonuses.
