From Tengrain at Mock Paper Scissors, who reminds us:

you must, Must, MUST vote for Driftglass. Lookit, I said it in the comments (kinda-sorta): if Drifty loses to some freakin’ Pajama’s Media neocon, anti-choice, racist, homophobic, supply-side, pro-Chimpy, pro-Blam-Blam, Alberto-Gonzoles wet-dreamin’, Ann-Coulter worshipping, Phyllis-Schlafly nasty-licking, John-Bolton fellating, nutjobber of the first order, then the terrorists will have won.

I don't know if I'd go that far, Ten, but Driftglass's main competitor did say Bush was right on Kyoto AND Gitmo. Sigh.

PETA saves a 140 year-old lobster from dinner. A consumer actually gets compensated for crappy phone service. The Howard Jarvis Mafia only cares about constitutional law when the Dems try to pass a tax around the Republicans; it doesn't matter to them if the Dems are the majority in Cali, though. The U.S. was as prepared to deal with Afghanistan as it was to deal with Iraq. Cheney the Dick has the gall to tell Obama not to make rash decisions regardig Iraq. Madoff survivors might have been unwitting accomplices to his crime. Will Americans over-eat their way out of a recession? Another "controversial" Obama pick. Expect slower mail, due to the suckonomy. The Army is openly brain-washing(I mean recruiting) youngsters through video games. Obama wants time for consumers to get the coupons for those converter boxes. Wal-Mart and Wall Street are hurting.

Despite Obama's recent decisions, such as Dick Warren, I actually think he's smart. He's trying to win over conservative voters who will then wonder why those obstructionist Republicans aren't willing to reach across the aisle in the same way for his policies. It also works against the Republicrats, because the voters will be wondering why they don't want to work with a guy from the same party, when they were willing to enable the war and the bail-out with a President of a different party. This thus has the effect of the public kicking out the bad apples on both sides who are most likely the a-holes who got us into this mess in the first place. It's like that analogy the Hollywood Elsewhere guy was using about letting Lieberman go. "Keep your enemies, closer."

You see, voters want immediate action for themselves, not for the military and the banks. So the public is going to be wondering what's holding up legislation, and it'll realize that it's the same jerks who rolled over for Bush. These Congresspersons seem to think they can either pass the buck to Obama or to the GOP minority; but the public hates Congress, not him. And their view of Congress is not going to change with a new President. He'll have three more years to argue his case to the voters, while these scumbags will only have one more year. Who do they really think is going to take the political hit? So now I'm starting to understand how Bush got this far. The people who passed his destructive policies are as much arrogant idiots as him. Checkmate in 2010, indeed.

Dick Cheney: Deficits don't matter. http://www.ontheissues.org/2004/Dick_Cheney_B...

Looks to me that Bernanke at the Fed has studied Hoover and has resolved to go down fighting. But the fundamentals of our economy are this; we has a Nasdaq bubble, where it was a "new economy where earning didn't matter", that collapsed in 2001, and that bubble was replaced by a real estate bubble which was created by lending to people who couldn't afford repaying on the terms of the loan. This new bubble was enabled by bundling the mortgages into securities graded by the rating agencies as "AAA" so that these mortgage backed securities could be sold at a profit. The only thing bailing out our bursting bubbles is another bubble, and I don't see that happening.

Absent that, a tax cut so that individuals can purchase more imported goods isn't going to remedy the American economy, but it will help China's economy. No wonder our loyal opposition, the Republicans are on board. Spending on public infrastructure isn't going to help, if the financing is borrowing or printing money. Things like energy independence and making our health care costs competitive with our allies would help the economy. Of course, the means to making our health care system competitive is single payer health care (medicare for all), which Obama hasn't so far endorsed.

With ever increasing Medicare costs, Social Security costs, Medicaid costs, a desire to keep the health care system separate from the approach employed by Europe, a desire to be the most energy consuming/per capita, we're screwed. Everything depends on borrowing. And, when the final Ponzi scheme collapses, the borrowing by the Federal government, we'll be pushing shopping carts full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread. And, I'll be looking for a driver of my Jeep, where I'll be the gunner of the 50 Caliber mounted on it, foraging for the next days meal.

i continue to be interested in this financial meltdown and the "bailout". of interest is tax havens/shell identities that are used for example by citigroup(C). these financial institutions use these tax havens to hide bad investments if you will from REGULATORS. i could be wrong i still believe there is a huge effort by wall street to spread the blame, dilute it. i understand people should pay their mortgage but difficulties/challenges happen and usually you can refinance. well, NOT anymore for many because they slice and dice these mortgages to turn them into financial investments. making it almost impossible to refinance. the likes of citigroup who received billions in tax payer money(s) to cover their ass/derivatives knew they had bad investment they just hid it in TAX havens in european/carribean countries. this "bailout" money is to pay for bad bets(credit default swaps/mortgage backed securities). when a large institution like (C) does this strategy they all do it. that's why they wouldn't lend money to each other which hurt other businesses ie. automakers. you DON'T and won't hear much about this because it's in the multi- billions of dollars.

MSM AP Spins Hard For Feinstein.

I was born in San Francisco, raised in California, and I know Feinstein. She has changed over the last 40 years in the wrong direction. If she was part of the French assemblee generale, she would be in one of the Far Right parties.

So I resent AP's presentation of her in the piece at the link I’ve posted below.

"The former San Francisco mayor is repeatedly ranked as California's most popular politician, bested only a few times by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger."

This is the senator who supported the Michael Mukasey nomination - disaster. This is the senator who supported amnesty for the Telecoms. These are only some tips of the iceberg.

And look at this krap:

"She's a larger-than-life figure," said Garry South, a California Democratic strategist who has run unsuccessful campaigns against Feinstein. "She has a certain mystique about her."

After reading that, all I have to say is, "Can someone please hit me over the head with a 2x4!?"

The only real, senator on the Left from California is Barbara Boxer. I've been writing emails and letters to Feinstein for years, criticizing her senate decisions and blogging against her online - waste of time. Her constituents are the U.S. corporate and elite classes.

"During a guest sermon last November at a friend's church in Illinois, Haggard said a co-worker of his father molested him when he was 7, an experience that "started to produce fruit" later. Clarifying that Friday, Haggard said: "I'm certainly not saying that because of that, I did this. I did what I did by my choice, and I'm responsible for it."

Then the article ends

"Haggard has said his childhood experiences, including same-sex "sex play" with friends when he was in the seventh grade, started to manifest themselves when he turned 50, a few months before the scandal. That conflicts with Jones' statement that Haggard paid him for sex for three years. Haggard on Friday declined to discuss the discrepancy."

here he comes using the suffering of people who had to go through real abuse to justify his self hating.

F*ck him... actually scratch that, don't f*ck him... he clearly enjoys that.

And these are the same self righteous assholes hellbent in shoveling "personal responsibility" down our throats, eh? It is always somebody else's fault when it comes to their shenanigans...

Baltimore Mayor Sheila A. Dixon was charged today with 12 counts of felony theft, perjury, fraud and misconduct in office, becoming the city's first sitting mayor to be criminally indicted.

The case stems in part from at least $15,348 in gifts Dixon allegedly received from her former boyfriend, prominent city developer Ronald H. Lipscomb, while she was City Council president. She also is accused of using as much as $3,400 in gift cards, some donated to her office for distribution to "needy families," to purchase Best Buy electronics and other items for herself and her staff.

Lipscomb was not indicted in the Dixon case, but he and City Councilwoman Helen L. Holton were charged this week in a separate $12,500 bribery scheme. Both cases grew out of a nearly three-year probe by the state prosecutor into City Hall corruption.

Think again! Israel is obviously NOT going to abide by any coming agreements:

LONDON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tonnes of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

A "hazardous material" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details were given.

Now why would they need artillery? Oh ya, to DEFEND themselves, right.

American Expess has increased the cost of borrowing on one of its credit cards to 46 per cent — more than 30 times the Bank of England base rate.
The company now charges 46 per cent APR on the British Airways Premium Plus card, making it Britain’s most expensive credit card.
Consumer groups said the cost of borrowing on some credit cards had now lost all touch with the base rate.
A series of other cards also have APR over 35 per cent — despite interest rates now being at the lowest level since the Bank of England was set up in 1694.
Other cards include Virgin Money American Express at 37 per cent and Citi MasterCard at 41 per cent.

I have become a fan of Suze Orman. Yep, I know she has made a fortune selling her books, but she has some damned good advice. In fact today I'm going to buy my first Suze book. It's her new one about what to do with your money in 2009.

It kind of sucks that credit cards were ever created. They brought with them an expectation of instant gratification. A whole lot of people got spoiled and now they are hurting.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

Both American Express and Citi were bailed out with tax dollars, so they could jack these rates up like this. Maybe it was part of their bailout objectives.

curtilingus's picture

Its not such a terrible thing you know. The credit card companies want to to stop using it (notice the subtle commercials that your are holding up the speed of commerce when you take the time to use cash)

Keep in mind the merchant fees for credit and transaction fees for debit drive up the cost of your purchase as well.

Put down the plastic America.

bobbquackenbush's picture

Forget buying the Orman books. Go to the public library and check them out. The advice is just ABC advice and you can use the money you would have spent on the book for some simple home accounting software or get it free on line; and remember two things, 1. Never buy what you want until you've waited until you have the cash. 2. Monitor all your accounts at lest once every three month to see if there is a problem. The rest of the stuff is about investing, and nobody should invest in anything until they are debt free.

It took me thirty years to get that advice set in my head, and it works for me and several thousand other people too.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

What is it with politicians and their stoopid rhetoric?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- As President-elect Barack Obama assures intelligence officials that his complaints are with the Bush administration, not them, there are growing hints from Democratic Senate allies that spy agency veterans will not be prosecuted for past harsh interrogation and detainee policies.

Palestinians have had enough pandering to Israel from America, have have rightfully rejected the pro-Israeli cease-fire agreement and are now willing to all stand and die for their rights -on their own soil.

And Israel, thanks to a vindictive, racist and war-mongering anti-Arab sect of the Democratic Congress, like Hillary Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, Harry Reid and Steny Hoyer, is perfectly happy to expend every hard earned American tax dollar and weapon we stuffed into Israel to aid the Palestinians request to die, slowly and painfully with the help of our cluster bombs and white phosphorous, rather than continue on in humiliation while the world watches.

As a secular American mother I despise and condemn every Democrat and every Jew, in particular, who sits silent at the grand buffet of the AIPAC table while allowing others to live under your feet, impoverished and brutalized under your gluttony and abuse and revenge.
