Ali Frick at Think Progress put together a hilarious video of Fox News' Shepard Smith mocking Glenn Beck throughout the day Friday, in the run-up to Beck's big "You Are Not Alone" weepfest. It seems we're not the only ones who think the guy is a joke.

But then Chris Wallace came on and chastised Smith for not toeing the Fox company line:

SMITH: Do you even understand this Glenn Beck Friday? Because I really don’t.

WALLACE: Well, I do, and what pains me — and you know, Shep, how highly I respect you — is you seem upset by Glenn Beck Friday.

SMITH: Upset?!

WALLACE: I mean, Glenn is a meteor here at Fox News–

SMITH: He is the greatest star of all time!

WALLACE: And you should be happy for his success–

SMITH: I am here to worship him.

WALLACE: –and you seem to be begrudging — you’re begrudging him his success. ...

WALLACE: I for one am on the Glenn Beck bandwagon and I advise you to join it as well.

Jawohl, Herr Kommandant!

As Ellen at Newshounds observes, Smith isn't the only Fox anchor to look askance at Beck; last week, Neil Cavuto called him out on his fearmongering as well.

Still, I think it's a safe bet that Chris Wallace is being the voice of Fox News management when he "advises" Smith to get on the bandwagon -- he didn't need to say "if you know what's good for you" to imply it. Either Smith is going to be crawling through broken glass to beg Beck's forgiveness or we may have to start up a Shepard Smith Pink Slip Watch -- to go alongside the Michael Steele Ouster Watch.

I don't know if you notice but its typically run that way, if your parents were ultra liberal, then the children end up being conservatives, and vice versa. But if you are balance in the middle, then it is possible to keep that balance. Look at the history of politics? it either sway far right to the left or swagger gently in the middle. In time of crisis, the movement jump far to the side. When it settle down it tries to find the middle.

bullfrog's picture

celebrity mudwrestling is a lot easier to cover than, say, torture, and the methods of torture used, or 9/11, and the serious need for a new, independent investigation. or how to get out of afghanistan. or the very real possibility this financial crisis was orchestrated to distract us from everything else i just listed above.

it's why i feel like it's a waste of my time to even come here, sometimes. it's getting pretty depressing seeing my team dumbed down to the level of a crowd gathered around a cockfight in an alley.

i've decided to stop commenting for a while; i need some time to go bang my head against a wall repeatedly -it's bound to have the same effect!

auf wieder sehen, amigo!!

It's really a shame that C&L only has one story here at a time to comment on. I mean, I know that I don't do very well when there are distractions from the very real problems facing us, and this single minded focus on glen beck keeps me from wringing my hands about other problems. I wish C&L would stop doing stories that I disapprove of and focus entirely on the things that serious people should be talking about. Maybe a story about how Cramer manipulated the market, or about the violence in El Salvador, or about the GOP's economic obstructionism, or about AIG's bonuses, or about Cheney's lying.

Instead, when I click on a story with Glen Beck and Shepard Smith prominently mentioned in the title I get nothing but a story about Shepard Smith and Glen Beck, and nothing about the GOP's lack of an economic plan or about the myriad 911 conspiracy theories.

Shadowgm's picture

WHAT site you're reading, because C&L isn't all Glenn Beck all the time. Scroll down and you'll find TWO, count 'em TWO threads mentioning Deadeye Dick Cheney, and GOP obstructionism to the economic plan is a regular feature.

9/11 theories aren't done here.

As for 'stories you disapprove of,' start your own blog.

And I don't appreciate the implication that the rest of us aren't 'serious people.' I'm in the media, so a lot of the criticism of network talking heads is pertinent to my job, about which I'm entirely serious.

Did you read the post above mine that I was replying to?

There is only one way Beck could have gotten that manic expression on his face and carried it for all these years...yup that's right, back in the boy's locker room at old Sehome High some cruel bully administered the most powerful atomic wedgie ever seen on the Left Coast...and now old Glenn stares out at the world with a perpetual scream mask on his brainless head.

If my memory serves me well didn't this Smith guy actually do some real reporting from Katrina? That bit of sedition plus this probably cost him his ride up on Rapture Day.

He would leave faux noise and never look back.
His career may depend on it.

Here's Shep's journalistic integrity.
I have to say though, it's not very often that people from fox step out of line, and the way that Wallace went after him for it was pretty telling. Roger Ailes must really be pleased with with Beck and what he's doing over there, Shep could end up out in the cold for this one when his contract comes up.

Thank you for missing me. It feels kind of nice to be missed. :)

When Bush was losing the wars, FOX was stuck on 24/7 reporting missing Easter break college hotties.

You are wrong about Fox's coverage of Katrina. Shep and Rivera were in the thick of it the entire time. Both were at the convention center and surrounding area... the fact they shed light on government incompetance at all levels may be your problem. You had a jaw-droppingly stupid man in charge of the city and a woman who rivals potted plants in levels of IQ running the State. Bush's FEMA pick of course was no shot of brilliance either. To deny the failure of local city and state governments is just dishonest( I would imagine this dishonesty is rooted partially in their party affiliation and their minority status)

Really. If these guys want to rally around Limbaugh and Beck, be my guest.

To have ALL of them discredited and out on the street will be a great day.

thepugilist's picture

Limbaugh and Beck will be the cement block that sinks the right, IF Obama can avoid the current "the financial meltdown is your fault" type of stuff that seems to be going around a lot these days. When/If this thing turns around, these guys will really look stupid.

I watched some of Beck's show last Friday just to see what it was all about. What it was all about was nothing. Mostly it was him crying at the drop of a hat and trying to sound like the common man as he asked people to feel the way they did right after 9-11 when the country came together. That's all well and good if the country comes together for the right reason and I didn't feel he was pushing it for the right reason. I have read on other sites that those who support him and are his fans felt the whole thing was a total blow.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

In his eyes, the country can only really come together if it's on his terms or because of his ideas. It's garbage. If McCain had one more electoral vote than Obama, America would have been "united" in Fox's eyes.

BillO doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd take losing his 'head asshole at the network' position lying down.

Question is, does he attack Beck, or try to out-Beck Beck?

BillO pokes a little fun at beck and then beck has to kiss Bill's ass. I've seen him do it a couple of times now. I guess Beck has found an even crazier audience than Bill's. Talk about the bottom of the barrel.

I really wish you'd let us in

Why you folks might hesitate to submit to our demand
But here's an FYI: you're all gonna die screaming

All we want to do is eat your brains
We're not unreasonable, I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We're at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We'll all come inside and eat your brains

After reading the story on Shepard Smith in last month's Esquire, I don't think Chris Wallace was speaking for management at all. Mr. Smith has been with Fox News since day one and appears to have the full blessing of Roger Ailes.

I think what we saw was the Sean Hannity wing of Fox News speaking through Chris Wallace and nothing more. Remember, Shepard Smith reports the news, he isn't a "commentator" like the prime-time line up.

I've been looking at the blogs the last few days, and this is what I've learned: David Neiwert and a bunch of other lefty bloggers have been utterly suckered into thinking this is real, which absolutely blows my mind.
