Franklin Schaeffer neatly encapsulates everything wrong with the GOP
Franklin Schaeffer was interviewed yesterday by MSNBC's Tamron Hall, talking about his HuffPo piece describing what's wrong with today's GOP, and why so many onetime Republicans like himself have fled the party for good.
It feels like a consummate summation of the situation, and a clarion call not just for liberals but for everyone who's had enough of movement conservatism.

His interview with D.L. Hughley was excellent!

He should be on every talk show there is. That should include all the Sunday morning programs. That will not happen of course because the corporate owners don't want that much exposure of his ideas.
because when Schaeffer goes from studio to studio telling a bankrupt nation that the party that had been voted out last year is bankrupt, the party that had been voted in will appear as arrogant.
Limbaugh may have a fat contract with Gear Channel but that doesn't make him a de facto standard just because he can do daily talk and show up for speeches.
It was no more than 3 years ago that various commentators were pointing at the Dems as bankrupt and that they may never rise to the call again.
Fact is that the Repubs are in a position to re-invent themselves. The Dems are not.
Where do you see any evidence that Republicans are even TRYING to reinvent themselves? If anything, they've dug their heels in harder. And where do see that they are even in a position to do so? I understand that things can change rather quickly, but most of this country has had it with them and rejected them soundly. Obama has to be a disaster on the scale of Bush for a Republican to beat him in 2012.
I remember back in the 1980s when Frank Schaeffer wrote some really strident books in which he advocated a very far-right Dominionist theology.
He's proof that people can change for the better. I'm looking forward to reading his latest book on the subject.
Yeah this guy needs more attention. Nice to see some sanity once in awhile.
the rube base...wow...not even the most eloquent Democrat ever put it all so well.
Bravo.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
L&P;
You betcha! One gop who has quit drinking the koolaid.
Amazing truthfulness. "They hate the President." Stunning.
When I first saw this it was one of those OMG moments. A Republican (first time I haven't used Repuke in a long time) and Evangelical that makes sense and telling it like it is. I love how he calls out the hypocrites that "NOW" want to be fiscal conservatives, but where were they when Bush was leading us over a cliff. Give 'im hell Mr. Schaeffer.
Bravo! Bravo!
Why do the CNN Newsreaders feel compelled to express the Conservative LIE that they want to solve the crisis the Conservative way?
NO Conservative plan has offered a reality based solution. Just more tax give aways to the people who ship jobs overseas and a spending freeze during a recession!
The people who dug the hole want a new shovel!
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
does no one speak of the 110th Congress, with the GOP in the minority, as being the most obstructionist in American history?
...The Corporate Media is heavily weighted toward conservative values of profit and catering to the rich.
The supposedly Liberal MSNBC has Joe Scab and Chris("I hate the Clintons") Matthews.
Repubhlicans should be cowering the corner from the combined scorn of the media's withering analysis of how they got the world into this mess. Instead the nedia makes them seem like the last best hope for saving us from Obama's recesion.
The media is still complicit in Republican crimes.
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Well said. The media has to seize upon scandal to try for ratings.
thiers plenty of new shovels and thier all made in......china!
I'm sorry, but when did it become the media's roll to bring up Republican talking points to counter someones anti-republican commentary? I would love to see if this [Deleted. Inappropriate. Site Monitor] would bring up a left wing talking point to counter a repug on her show? my guess is no way no how, but I'm just guessing.
No less than twice that silly twit ran out Republican talking points! No, I DON'T think she would do the same if a holy GOP roller were on blathering away with the latest lies. She'd just nod an giggle, i am sure of it, but certainly no fucking "balance" of a Dem talking point would be forthcoming.
Geez, lady, bring on Newt if you really think those tools don't get enough air time to run their mouths, but try to be a tad more subtle the next time some repuke overlord is CLEARLY gesturing off camera telling you to read the damned GOP cue cards!
SHEESH!
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
Think he could have gotten around to mentioning Jane Fonda again?
He's repetitive and doesn't strike me as much of an intellectual heavyweight. His only cred comes from once being an Evangelical, not exactly a glowing resume. He was sucking up to John McSame as recently as 2000. My guess is that when the wind shifts again so will he. There must be someone better out there to make these points in the media.
And is Tamron Hall always the vapid, helium-sucking GOP hack she seems in this clip?
This guy can see the light and roll the GOP all he wants, and more power to him, but I wouldn't turn my back on a scorpion and I wouldn't turn my back on this guy either.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
This following poem (A cut and paste from a Chicago newspaper website) is composed entirely of actual quotes from George W. Bush.
Make the Pie Higher
I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen
And uncertainty
And potential mental losses.
Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the internet
Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?
They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish
Can coexist.
Families is where our nation finds hope
Where our wings take dream.
Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher!
Make the pie higher!
For posting those brilliant words out of the orface of the Shrub.
Isn't a lack of basic English breathtaking?
I is only right. (snark)
Wanted to give him a firm cosmic handshake.
It's a sign of MATURITY to be able to accept and act upon constructive criticism.
what a courageous man. they're going to rip him to shreds for this. i wish him all the best.
Franklin Schaeffer may be voicing opposition to some of today's worst Republican obstructionists and subverters, but he is by no means representative of the ideas that will bring America back to health.
For one thing, did you hear his casual dismissal of Jane Fonda's opposition to the Vietnam war? She was "rooting for the other side." Right, that's all there was to it.
People like this should not be trusted. Too unstable. Snap judgments. Shooting from the hip. Good to hear he's shooting at the bad guys...this week.
BTW, who would we cheer for next if they voiced our talking points, Rush Limbaugh? Sean Hannity? Pay them enough and see what happens.
Dude invoked Jane Fonda As Traitor twice . . . bad form. Latent anger, hostility, misogynist tendencies, pandering to base while criticizing base . . . . dude's a shill, a scam, and digging for gold outside his turf.
I don't care WHAT his prog message is, he invokes Fonda, twice? His message is negated.
But I don't CARE about that putz . . . . *G*
Because onn the other hand, Tamron Hill is stone cold desirable and delicious . . . . as long as talking heads are gonna get monikered as eye candy . . . she's pure sugar. A lot of the 'attraction' that hits me is from her strong vocal presentation, pitch of voice, inflections and body language brought to bear on the subject at hand of doing her job, and doing it well . . . but damn, aside from her professionalism in front of the camera . . . . she's a TOTAL hottie! *BLINK*
says SO much about what is wrong with broadcast media today.
Says so much about what's wrong with their audience!
Scorpions don't change their nature.
(and that Jane Fonda shit is trite, disingenuous, and hateful)
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
the right wing screamed and yelled and whined and cried about the "domino theory".
They were wrong...as usual.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Perhaps he was just speaking the GOP's language. ie. "rooting for the other side" etc.
I thought the GOP's language and goals meant they want to begin "looting the other side".
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Great, one moron out of 20 million is starting to get a clue. Doesn't give me a whole bunch of hope. There's still the 290 million out of 300 million who can't do the math.
Where ever there is a huge pot of money there will be crooks and liars. Thats about sums up the GOP BRAND. A bunch of robber barrons.
Dont ya wish just once you could put your hands tru tha tube grabs these idiots like tamera by the collar and say just do your job and stop the talking points you have enough rethugs on your show to do that.....and Im talking most about jughead joe scaburough and barbie one is an empty head and one has a plastic head and both are interchangeable
Until these talking heads stop propping up the traitorous right by mouthing every lie the GOP comes out with, the true depth of the right's treasonous bent will not be told--enough with shilling for these traitors already!
It would be great if all hate-filled Reslugs opened their ignorant minds and had AN EPIPHANY like he did.
... is so well-calculated to enrage the far right! Whether or not you believe she was traitorous, they do. I laughed thinking about how they'll react.
...that idiot interviewer just *had* to get in a bit of "balance" at the end there, with a GOP talking point that he didn't have enough time to refute.
Feh. What a perfect example of how the "liberal" media is part of the problem.
I picked up the book yesterday and so far a good read. I'm making time today to finish reading it.
Hey don’t discount this guy. He may be using Republican talking points to damage Republicans but it’s all the guy knows!
Did you notice how he really needed to get the point out there that his son is/was serving in the military??
Why?
Because it’s what they do. They will not listen to anyone who does not have a vested interest in the war IE; you put up as a sacrifice your own son for the cause or you sit there and you shut up cuz you don’t know war.
It’s what they know.
Now, I don’t want this guy representing me or my values but lemmie tell ya … there is no enemy of Republicanism, Neo-conservatism or fundamentalism then one of their own who has wised up and decided to lay out the naked truth.
No one CAN be more honest then one who has been there done that and knows EXACTLY how they work and what they will say or how they will act in response to what you may say.
The Jane Fonda thing … big deal.
Dudes one of the people that got those rubes to associate those words with the height or what it means to be a traitor and now he’s associating it to THEM!!
It’s what they do … it’s what they know.
I hope this guy gets all kinds of air time because no one will be so brutally honest … and that truth needs to be told by someone they cannot immediately dismiss.
Granted, they eventually will make this guy into a devil that never truly knew Christ and dismiss him without thought.
But this is a big deal for now.
No one knows what that underbelly looks like, what these people truly think or how far they will actually go then a former cult member.
Believe me, as a former fundamentalist, these people are crazier then you may know. ‘Specially if you never were on the inside.
This is great! I was watching this last night and thanking the flying spaghetti monster that the country made the turn that it did … it’s over. These people will never fool the populace again. Their last grasp at keeping us in the dark is over.
And as more and more people like these take the blue pill and wake up in the really real world they are going to tear it apart from the inside.
I guess it's been a long time since I saw that movie ...
The red pill I meant ... the blue pill lets you go back to sleep and wake up and believe whatever you want.
There really is no going back after you've seen it. (Reality that is)
Now Franklin Schaeffer will be attacked as crazy... bitter... anything that will devalue him personally. That's what the right does when anyone speaks the truth. They are so transparent and... frankly, boring.
I wish the right would just abandon their dead ideology and rapture on out of here already so we normal people can get on with creating a just world that works for everyone.
This guy proves that not all republicans are wingnuts, but all wingnuts are republicans.
Frank Schaeffer's given name is Francis, Jr., after his famous father. Is this mistake confusing him with Billy Graham's son, Franklin? The two are a world apart in many, many ways. I also heard his Jane Fonda remark as a rhetorical ploy aimed primarily at those who have deployed her against progressives--sort of "hoisting them on their own petard."
He admitted in his interview with Terri (sp?) Gross on NPR that he wrote-in John McCain in both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections (he refused to vote for Bush, who he saw as early as 2000 as both incompetent and hypocritically religious), but he also listed in detail how the John McCain of 2008 had turned his back on nearly everything the John McCain of 2000 believed. However you may feel about him, he's clearly paying attention.
As someone who grew up in a "Fundagelical" culture shared by both Frank Schaeffer and Franklin Graham, I think it's fair to say that Frank Schaeffer has undergone a personal sea-change in his way of perceiving and thinking about politics and human culture.
One word about his father, Francis Schaeffer, whom I interviewed in 1981 while working as a features reporter for my college newspaper in Philadelphia: Francis Schaeffer despised Jerry Falwell and his ilk--he saw them as shysters who betrayed Jesus Christ and the gospel for their own gain. Unlike most Evangelicals at that time, Schaeffer was no anti-intellectual, and in his books he engaged the work of cutting edge artists and philosophers.
sanity can rise from the ashes of such loaded preconditions.
Did the anchor feel the need to make excuses for the repuds and counter what this man was saying? She also made sure to get the last mord in and defended repudickism. Obviously she got he talking points spoon fed to her. friggin sellout!
