Limbaugh's racial fixation embodies why Republicans are losing

Rush Limbaugh, somewhat predictably, isn't backing down from his claim that Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama was a product of their both being black men -- that is, that it was about race, not policy;

"I thought it should be about race," he said. "I thought you liberals thought this was a historic candidacy because finally we are going to elect a black guy…why hide behind this, why act like it's not about race?"

"This was all about Powell and race, nothing about the nation and its welfare," Limbaugh added.

Limbaugh simply doesn't get it. Obama's candidacy is historic, yes -- but what has made it possible all along is that his campaign has been about transcending race, not wallowing in it.

Obama has carefully eschewed identity politics throughout this campaign. Meanwhile, the Republican campaign has been about nothing but. And it has its most transparent mouthpiece in Limbaugh.

Limbaugh is the guy at the sports bar who carefully tabulates the racial composition of every team on the screen and roots accordingly. If a team has a black quarterback, he predicts they're going to lose. Heaven forfend that any black player demonstrate too much enthusiasm over a touchdown or a dunk or a home run, or that any black linebacker should level a white quarterback, because then the "thug" and "jungle" references come out. He hates Tiger Woods with an inexplicable venom (mostly because he's too uppity "full of himself").

We all know that guy. (Some of them are in our families.) And anyone who's even moderately serious about sports, and moderately knowledgeable about them, knows that that guy is completely and hopelessly full of shit.

What anyone who knows sports can tell you is this: certain races may tend to certain attributes culturally, but the only thing that matters in sports is how you perform on the field. Race is obliterated by this. Because whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians, Pacific Islanders ... their ultimate athletic measure is how they do their jobs.

Well, sports aren't politics, but they can be a useful analogy. The choice Americans face this election is of such immense gravity, the stakes so high, that we simply can't afford to be distracted by the rantings of know-nothings more intent on sowing division than solving the all-too-serious problems -- indeed, a challenge of Augean proportions -- that lie ahead of us. What matters is finding the person who clearly is most likely to perform well on the field.

And the majority of Americans know that. The cloistered True Believers like Limbaugh, clinging to their race-baiting ways ... not so much.

Yes, we can be proud to elect a black man President for the first time in history. But we are only doing so because we have judged the content of his character, not the color of his skin. Obama will be the next president not because he is black, but because he is the best man for the job.

I suspect, deep in his heart of hearts, Rush Limbaugh knows this. And it is driving him insane.

The Big Guy with the Viagra addiction knows his audience and knows just what brand of red meat to throw.

You are right. We all know people like this. My father, f'rinstance.

With all my love,
Aunty Em

the campaign is fundamentally about issues that are tearing down this great nation. barrack provides the most coherent and rational plans available to the current political market.

the fact that he's black only sweetens the deal. thinking about all those rabid republicans, tearing at the racial red meat thrown to them by their intellectual overseers, having to be lead by a black commander in chief is just too good.

"Full of Shit" should be the Repuke motto. Describes just about every one of them I know.

The bigger question for Rushbo is would he have supported McCain, someone he loathes, if he were a black Republican? Would we be hearing the Sambo samplings and other negra shticks against his party's own candidate?

On C-Span Sunday night was Mark Levin being interviewed by Brian Lamb. He is a Limbaugh acolyte and Rush adorer who doesn't even realize how vile he is. Whe asked if he could be likened to Michael Savage he couldn't make the connection except he is even worse. Lamb lifted the veil and the face was shocking.

In any event, Limbaugh is again carrying the Republican water after vowing in 2004 to never do it again. Well here were are 4 short years later...

I saw that interview too. These guys make their living by talking and they say anything to get attention. That's their gig. They aim everything they say at the worst part of the American population and that crazy as hell part scoops it all up. Why? Because what these guys say justifies their ignorance and stupidity. These guys make that group of Ameicans feel important.

If McCain were a black Republican, Rush would be chastising all blacks for not voting based on race. Hypocricy is his defining personality trait.

1. If Powell had endorsed McSame would he justifiably be considered a sellout/oreo by members of his own race?

2. According to Limbaugh's "logic" the endorsement of any caucasian former General or Secretary of State (I'm looking at you Kissinger and Haig) should be dismissed on the basis of they are only supporting McLame because he is white like them.

But I never understood what this "transcending" race thing is supposed to mean.

it probably means different things to different people. i wonder if Obama himself has ever articulated what it means? i'd be curious to know his p.o.v. on the subject.
to me it means, that while issues of *racism* continue to be extremely divisive in this country- a problem that needs to be dealt with- that *race* is never the defining or most important factor in what makes an individual who and what they are. that really, if we're going to be honest about it, we are ALL multiracial, we are ALL human, and our differences are miniscule in comparison to the things that unite us.
but i could be wrong. i'm often wrong, and i haven't had my coffee yet this morning. :)

I like your definition rubyinparadise!

And, this would also be true about gender, ethnicity, religious or politicl beliefs, etc., or almost any trait or belief system. When you peel away all the outer layers, we're all just human beings, we all have the same needs and the same fears.

Maybe some day soon, with all the new-fangled technology and communciations we have, we'll be able to understand and accept that, and begin working together to help one another and our planet. Sure hope so.

... and see something other than skin color. Or see that skin color isn't the defining trait or characteristic. It's incredible how many people can't seem to get past this oh-so-unimportant stumbling block.

When I see Obama, I see a smart, calm, charismatic man -- who happens to be half black, half white. In terms of pigmentation, the black is more dominant, more obvious. But it simply doesn't matter.

I wish racists like the Vulgar Pigboy would acknowledge that there are good and bad individuals in every racial and ethnic category. He just seems to have a deep-seated hatred of anybody who isn't a pasty, doughy loser such as himself.

I want him to choke on his own bile and vomit. He's the worst of the lot.

BID

To people who say Powell only endorsed because of race:

So what if he did? How does that negate all his points in his endorsement?

Read your comment. Carefully. There are too many people who say exactly what you have written, that "Powell only endorsed because of race." How much wiggle room does the word "only" leave for other reasons. So yes, that would negate the other points.

I know what you are trying to say, but Reos are crafting their lines with Rush showing them how.

It could be construed that the word 'only' indicates Powell doesn't believe in the points he's made but that doesn't stop the listener from determining if they believe in his points. In other words, Powell's belief in his charges do not necessarily determine the truth of those charges.

Lets face it anyone who thinks Powell did this because of race isn't going to be dissuaded from that belief. So for those people, skip that part, concede it because there is nothing else to do, and focus instead on getting them to acknowledge the rightness or wrongness of Powell's charges. Still probably a lost cause but its something to work with.

What bothers me most is David's assertion that Obama's fitness to be President is driving Limbaugh insane. Not because David's logic is faulty but because Rush Limbaugh is already out of his fucking mind.

The idea that he could get crazier scares the shit out of me...He's been spouting that same racist, violent crap we've been hearing at the rallies for 20 years on the radio. And your telling me he's not insane yet?

Without opposition, a flatulent, vomitous windbag like Limbaugh is nothing. No one pays him any mind.

But the more people rail against his idiotic pronouncements, the more it feeds his ego. "They're upset because I'M RIGHT," he tells himself.

Exactly right!

I don't know why people are making such a big deal over this. Okay, so Limbaugh is a racist idiot. We all knew that. Don't feed the troll.
We have bigger things to work on right now.

.....has to have soemthing to report to keep things interesting for the masses, now that Obama seems to be leaving McGoo in the dust. Isn't that the media's job? Perpetuating rumors, inuendo, lies and propagande?

and all it would take would be for someone like Powell to publically challenge him to make the same remarks to his face, in a public forum. It would be amusing to watch him shrink and squirm as he tries to dismiss or ignore the challenge. Limbaugh is a man who has nothing and is nothing outside of his studio.

not the news

What Powell said to reporters after he was on Meet the Press was so good. He went into the Muslim thing. He said so what if Obama were a Muslim. What about all the little boys and girls who are Muslim? Are they supposed to feel they could never be president because of their religion?

Powell made more sense Sunday than I think anyone else who spoke that day and for the most part, most days.

Probably made more sense sunday than the rest of his life.

And I loved the very respectful way Powell destroyed Michelle Bachmann's witch hunt bullshit. My cousin who lives in St. Paul told me last night Bachmann's offices have been flooded with calls and her opponent raised nearly $200,000 this past weekend.

I'm hearing $500,000 in the first day, $700,000 after three days.

And the Republican who lost to Bachmann in the primary is asking Republican voters to write him in instead of voting for her.

Tinklenberg or some such name...
She totally evoked the spirit of McCarthy with that bullshit!

I sure hope donations = votes. This bitch needs to be gone. Is she the one that tried to make out with Bush on his way out of the state of the union speech?

And BTW remember what the Al Franken pointed out so finely....RUSH LIMBAUGH IS A BIG FAT LIAR

He's a sharp guy. But he flushed his reputation away 5 years ago at the U.N.

No one ever remembers this, and everyone thinks of Powell as a 'good soldier' who backs his superior, but I remind people when I get the chance he resigned from the military because he didn't agree with Clinton's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy of letting gay's in the military.

So he stood up for his principles (of being a homophobe) with Clinton and resigned when he though something was wrong, but backed Bush into a lie based war of choice and aggression.

Fuck Powell. But still good endorsement.

I hated Powell for that U.N. fiasco too, but that has nothing to do with the important and relevant points he made Sunday. We all do stupid things in our lives(except you evidently), at least Powell feels enough remorse to try and redeem himself.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

No

First of all the UN fiasco wasn't his first screw up. And even if it were, somethings you don't get forgiven for. Like enabling a war of choice and aggression based on lies. Also even though he is capable of offering evidence of the admins crimes he keeps his mouth shut so no forgiveness.

Still a good endorsement tho.

The Right wing did this shit to Kennedy forever in an attempt to render him null and void no matter how many great contributions he subsequently made. Even today they still bring up Mary Jo. Powell fucked up...yes. But you can't deny the significance of what he said Sunday.

I didn't deny it. I praised it. But he still sucks for what he's done and continues to do. (cover for the admin)

yeah even hitler had his good side ,he brushed his teeth and made the exicutions run on time!

Great analogy Tyree.

It's great what he said Sunday, sure, but he's Gen. Powell the Vietnam Vet. The guy that came up with 'The Powell Doctrine' so that there would never, ever, ever be another Vietnam. "Go in with overwhelming force, have clear objectives and ALWAYS have an exit strategy", said Four-Star Colin. Then he goes and gets us into a War that breaks every fucking rule he claimed to stand for!
Give him a second chance. Let him run a charitable NGO. But if he wants back in government, we should take some time thinking that one over.

shallow people always assume others are as shallow as they are.

It's a free country, you can be a racist. Just SPEAK FOR YOURSELF!

sorry thought i was , powell at the un see this vial, its full of baby powder, but it could be sadams anthrax, and gee think of the mushroom clouds, dont believe me ? ask kida sleezy rice!

Obama has done all one can ask of him to make his campaign inclusive and not making race an issue, but yet fat nasty looking racists like Limbaugh and that pussy Hannity continue to throw shit at him hoping something sticks. Powell explained his decision to support Obama thoroughly and eloquently but was totally dismissed as having racial motivations. Even some "progressives" here suggest that because black people overwhelmingly support Obama they're being racial too, ignoring our history of sound and colorblind voting.
This Presidential election has already been another embarrassing chapter in our Nation's continuously sad, pathetic history in race relations.

Obama has continuously made this election about race!! Everytime anyone stated the facts about Obamas connections to terrorists (Ayers) black supremacy - "God damn America, kill whitey" (Wright), radical muslims - kill whitey (Alshidi) or an opponent (Hillary) etc. Obama claims they are a racist. Where is his long form birth certificate? He refuses to produce it, WHY? Does the ****** have something to hide. YOU DAMN RIGHT HE DOES!! The people in this country don't give a damn if his/her skin color is purple and has huge ears and a tale and is Muslim as long as he or she has the best interest of AMERICA as their first priority!! Obama DOES NOT have the best interest of this country as his priority! Obama talks about "change". Study his background carefully, think people, it's true and out of Obama's, Wright's, Alshidi's and Obama's wifes mouths. Do your homework before you vote. Obama is a RACIST, RADICAL MUSLIM, THAT ATTENDED WRIGHT'S CHURCH FOR 20 YEARS!! Are you ready to study the Curan? Wear a towel on your head? Have the ******s and illegal mexicans take more of what you work/worked so hard for? Africa and Mexico are third world countries. (WHY? STUPIDITY) THINK PEOPLE, it's important!!

The thing is, Rush and his ilk are so predictable that any of us could write their script. Just look for the ugliest side of any story and go with it. Spout hate and anger to the simplest of minds and then call it a day.

#1. He appeared to refer to "General Powell" as "Genital Powell".
#2. He referred to the critics of his argument as the "drive-by's".

*Maybe* you can argue that claiming anyone one endorsing someone of who shares their skin tone is doing so only because of their skin tone... but if you can't get through a single sentence about an African American man without accidentally using the words "genital" and "drive-by", you _just_ might be a racist.

Or maybe I'm just too cynical. Listen to it yourself and see if you think I was hearing words that weren't spoken.

"Drive-by" is short for 'drive-by media,' Rush's dismissive term for the media outrage over his latest spew, implying:

a) no one has the courage to face His Righteous Ideas
b) he's somehow being taken out of context

Is that the *only* term he uses for media? No, I don't listen to his show, but every clip I've ever heard of him referring to the media had him using terms "Liberal Media", "Mainstream Media", "Media Elite", "Media Hitmen", and a host of others. Same with other right-wing pundits. "Drive-by smears" yes, "Drive-by Types", no.

I'd feel the same if, when describing Hillary Clinton, he used the phrase, "Well, she's a mother who has [blah blah blah]..." rather than using the more common words "politician", "senator", "Democrat", "Liberal", "wife", or "woman". Using a rarely-used term with a double-meaning generally indicates the person has both meanings in mind - or just would like their listener to.

And yes, I'd be less cynical about that possibility if Mr. Limbaugh's job wasn't to choose words, quite effectively from we've seen, for a living.

No, you heard right, when I watched KO yesterday I picked it up also.

Limpy is nothing but a spoiled brat who never got around to checking his racism nor growing up for that matter

If the Dems get any kind of majority, they MUST bring back the "fairness statute" that was undone under Reagan.

Yayhoos like Limbaugh can't survive at their present strength if they are immediately debunked by facts presented in a way that people can understand.

It'll be an uphill battle, because the absence of the Fairness Doctrine has allowed the public to be sold this 'marketplace of ideas' crapfest, i.e., if your (liberal) idea doesn't take wing, it's because my (conservative) idea is superior. It ignores the million-dollar budget and syndication.

The Fairness Doctrine is about access.

Consequently, net neutrality is also an essential to restoring/maintaining the health of our democracy. Turning it into a pay-to-play field, where someone like a John Amato would have to fork out cash in proportion to the bandwidth, will silence far too many valid and insightful voices.

There is no democracy without access.

A remedy is needed; access for Dems, Socialists, Kucinich and Nader and Communists.

The Nazis are getting ALL of the coverage.

Poor Rush. He's so disappointed. All these years he's been thinking that Colin Powell was 'one of the good ones' and now he finds out that it just isn't so.

That and some vicodin and viagra. Go get some native vagina.

Rush probably doesn't believe a word of this, but he knows the "dittoheads" who rely on him to throw out red meat to them every day love it and it makes him a rich man. One daughter is, unfortunately fixated on Right Wing Radio and sadly we have, by her choice, come to a parting of the ways and I doubt the breach will ever be repaired. I see this happening in the McCain/Palin rallies on a National scale and I truly fear for the future of our wonderful Country. Once you've let the genie out of the bottle as they say, it's very hard to put the hatred and division back.

It's because the anger offered by Rush and others plays to the feeling of a loss of control. It's incredibly juvenile, shouting louder because you didn't get a cookie, or because you think your sibling got the 'bigger half,' or a better Christmas present.

And this is evident in their usual arguments. Gays are destroying the concept of marriage. The 'brown people' are taking over the country. The 'illegal immigrants' are taking our jobs. The 'poor' are taking our healthcare dollars.

The arguments haven't changed in over 100 years. If we go back to the 1880's and the Chinese Exclusion Act, we'll hear the same song-and-dance. 'John Chinaman' was going to take away jobs, our women, teach heathen ideas to our children, bring disease to our cities, etc., etc. (Funny thing is, Dennis Kearney's Workingmen's Party was influenced by Marxist ideas ....)

Hey, What do you have against the Chinese Exclusion Act? If we hadn't kicked out the Chinese back in the day, then we could have ended up in a situation where the Chinese owned America. Just think, with their sinister, Eastern, creepy, un-American habit of 'saving' the Chinese after 120 years would have been in a position to control the U.S. T-Bill market. I think we really dodged a bullet with the Exclusion Act: if we hadn't kicked them out we Americans might have become a nation of backward degenerate 'savers.' Well, that and probably opium smokers as well.

Right Wingers Even Disparage Obama's Endorsement by … GOD!
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=4157

Rush, Rush, Rush, How again does this guy have so many listeners? I think now would be a good time to see about getting him off Armed Forces Radio. I mean really this guy can say anything and he gets a pass? Imus makes one nappy haired comment and he's history, Rush compiles an encyclopedia of hate and filth and he just continues on his merry little oxycontin waddle down the public airwaves. Where is the outrage? I mean really, Rush wants to talk identity politics? Rush wouldn't vote for ANYONE if they call themselves progressive or liberal, and that includes Jesus Christ and Ronald Reagan.

Limbaugh's IQ is smaller than his dick.

He has one?

It was discovered after the production of the world's most powerful microscope.

I just gotta say that I so admire Obama's decision to go and be with his very sick grandmother. Everyone on tv is saying that it's a bad time for him to leave the campaign trail and all that. To hell with that, he is going to be with someone he loves in what could be her last days. How could anyone question that?

What's Rush going to say about this, that he's going to be with her just because she's white?

I just don't see how this can hurt him politically at all.
If he stayed on the campaign trail while his grandma was sick...that would really hurt him I think...
And seriously...who cares what rush limpballs says?

I loved my grandmother so much and I would have given anything to have been with her during her last days. Nothing could have stood in my way if I had known I had one last chance to be with her.

His decision is not political, it's devotional.

I'd drop everything to see my grandma if she was that ill...Obama I'm sure is only thinkin of his grandmother, nothing else.

They seem to be saying things like 'it's a political stunt,' 'he doesn't really give a rat's a** about grandma,' and the usual hateful crap we've come to expect from the White Christian Family Values gang.

Fu*k anyone saying that!

God, I hate these sick Republicans. They're leaving slime trails everywhere.

It's incredible (and very scary) how McGramps have Moosegirl have unleashed the most rabid of the racist, sexist, homophobic Know-Nothings.

They better be careful..

Bash grandma's at your own peril. They are the '3rd rail' of political mudslinging.

There's not a chance in hell that fat-ass is changing any minds. The only people that listen to him have long ago made up their minds who they're voting for. He's just preaching to the choir.

Let them climb up in their tree-house and have their little meeting while they hang a "No libruls" sign from a nail outside the door. They can continue to whip each other into a racist fervor and have their stroke-fest all they want.

It won't change the fact that every point that Powell made was dead on.

Powell probably did change some minds, however. And that is eating away at these morons. So now they'll attack in the only ignorant way they know. But it won't matter.

Limpballs must have been upset when my favorite quarterback, ever, won the XXll Superbowl against Denver.

Doug Williams. Man, I just loved that game. And he won it, got the MVP award, too.

No, it's not about skin color, Rush, you idiot. It's about being able to get the job done. Powell endorsed Obama because the man can get the job done for our country. McCain can't in a million years. And certainly not with that thing he picked for VP.

Why is he still on the AIR!!! Comments less vitriolic than this get Imus (putz) booted, why is Rush allowed to talk like this. He is breeding race hatred and were Malcolm X to talk like this about the "white race" Rush would be calling for the FBI to "get him". Just as he attacks "Wright" like a dog with a bone.

He needs to be fined and pulled from the air waves.

At the very least McCain should "repudiate" everything Rush says!

everything Rush Says!

Don't Hold Your Breath waiting for that to happen!!!

I so look forward to the day when people like Rush are relegated to holding court in some beer dive where their only audiences are people who are too drunk to understand what they're spouting. The rest of us can look back and take comfort in the knowledge that thinking people prevailed, after all.

Rush: "Blah blah blah blah liberal socialist marxist blah blah!"

Drunk: "Shut up, fatso. You sound like my ex-wife. Blah, blah, blah all day."

Rush: "Commie pinko terrorist-loving blah blah blah!"

Bar Patron: "Turn up the game, wouldya, Barkeep?"

Maybe RUSH & BUSH can both retire after the election and move to Arizona, where Cindy McCain can hire them to be beer tasters!!! (a job wich suits each of them to a t...er, Mug.)

C'mon, David. Of course Limbaugh "gets it".

He is playing this card because that his what the GOP wants him to do. Period. This is about political strategy. What? You think that somehow he is so ignorant of the country's history, and so backward that he REALLY thinks this is about race?

C'mon. This is a clearly defined, protracted effort to continue to motivate the base. The GOP has only the right wing base left, and they are "trying to scare middle of the road" white folks. Period.

That is the strategy, and if it takes throwing Colin Powell under the bus to make it work...so be it.

now that Barack Obama has decided to suspend his campaigning...for a REAL reason...where is John McCain on this. Has he issued a statement of support for Barack during this difficult time.

Barack Obama is a clear example of how people SHOULD behave, and used to behave.

The right wing TALKS about family values...Barack Obama LIVES them.

He isn't suspending his campaign. Everything will go as usual and Michelle will stand in for him with his schedule of events and speeches.

Obama's campaign is showing once again that they can do more than one thing at a time.

now seem invalidated. The initial perception we all had then was probably correct.

I've assumed that you are asking if Limbaugh has a strategy.

No. His GOP masters do. He is merely a foot soldier in the war on sanity.

L&P:

Not sure which comment you're referring to ...

Just not the same without em!

Whatever happened to Dennis??!! Guess he couldn't figure out how to work with the new format.....!!!

I meant his personal campaigning.

Sorry for the confusion.

You just look for any reason to correct me!! LOL! ; 0 )

Good post. Reminds me of Joe the Plummer's tap dancing like Sammy Davis Jnr comment.
BTW, what's with this comment though from you: "... certain races may tend to certain attributes culturally" Hah? So you fall for that white men can't dance, dunk, nonsense?

No, I'm just saying that white football players tend to like country and rock and black football players tend to like hip hop and R&B. And even then it's just a tendency.

But those things mean exactly shit out on the field.

PERIOD!

for one thing, They have been successful at Dividing the Country, and breeding Fear. Never in my 71 years have I seen it more divided.

America NEEDS Uniting.

OBAMA/BIDEN

Good evening!
How's it going?

Recovering from a Ex-Pat Condo Bash. I have to say, that the Germans and Swedes and Aussies can drown us Americans when it comes to booze. I have been in a daze all day, and only now beginning to recover.

Sounds like a good night's sleep might be in order.

Ah Bangkok!!! Great city!!! I don't drink, but I can get other supplies there. Be seeing you in December?? Or I'll think about you anyway.

Rush Limbaugh is fat and stupid. The snorg tees girls, on the other hand are cute and entirely doable, if predominately white.

Read about the real Maverick at the Lemon Report. lemonreport.blogspot.com

If he looks like a pig, oinks like a pig, and spews racist detritus, it must be RUSH LIMBAUGH, America's latest embarrassment and "McCain campaign tanker".

Wesley Clark, a distinguished military man, simply questions John McCain's credentials to be president, and the republicans are outraged and demand an apology. Rush Limbaugh, a draft dodger, calls Colin Powell a liar on why Powell is endorsing Obama, and nothing.

As some very smart listener of the Stephanie Miller show (not me) just pointed out, Limbaugh has been saying Obama is an Arab.

So, if Powell endorsed based solely on race, Powell must be an Arab.

Colin Powell perhaps would have seemed more a profile in courage and conviction if he had come out for Barack Obama three, six or even nine months back. Waiting until this late moment to do so while still the better thing to do now lacking some quality of foresighted vision or over the horizon forward thought.

That the Bush/Cheney regime used Powell and he allowed himself to be used by Bush/Cheney regime to set up and sell the American Debacle in Iraq remains a murky episode for Powell. Always will. But then this circles back to what would prompt Colin Powell to want to be a member of an American political party that interfaces so well with the likes of G.W.Bush,Karl Rove,Rush Limbaugh,Dick Cheney,Bill Kristol, the Kagans,Sarah Palin and John McCain?

John McCain's bid for the WH is an imprudent and reckless grab bag of all that ails the Republican party from the past 15 years of GOPer lunacy, delusion and frightful disregard of better or good instincts, facts, truths and decency of conduct.

Colin Powell is assigned much weight of character regarding American national politics. His endorsement of Barack Obama came late.

Why he still chooses to cover for G.W.Bush,Dick Cheney and now John McCain by not leaving the Republican Party just on the merits of doing what is politically right remains the lingering question mark.

Had he made the endorsement several months ago the voters would have forgotten about it by now. By doing it now, it will still be fresh on the voters minds as they vote.

I think Powell studies the candidate. He wanted to watch to see how he would react when the going got tough. How he would react if something came up (like the economic fiasco) to see how he would react. See how Obama would handle himself throughout the campaign. As we have seen at every turn Obama has reacted better than anybody would have thought. Colin Powell gave this a lot of thought. he didn't do it for race.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/e...

The longer McCain fails to release accurate statements regarding his "Stage 3B Invasive Melanoma", the more he looks unfit to serve.

I guess that is the foregone conclusion americans are making today following the NYT article regarding "new health concerns" of this candidate.

CNN (John Roberts, specifically) tried to emphasize the heatlh of Joe Biden but, in so doing, only highlighted the obvious: John McCain has not yet submitted those 1100 pages which Sanjay Gupta referred to. Of course, their attempt to suggest that McCain had submitted them fell flat on it's face because we know that he threw 1100 pages of "clutter" (unnumbered pages) without any sequence to a handful of reporters weeks ago and forbid any of them to take anything out of the room. It took 2 of the 3 hours to try to determine the order of scrapes with the cancer but one thing was concensus:

McCain's radical excision of his cancer in 2000 where he lost the side of his face was not a "new lesion"; in fact, it was a "satellite lesion" of his other lesions which brings his life expectanty down considerably.

THIS COUNTRY SIMPLY CANNOT TAKE CHANCES ON AN UNHEALTHY PRESIDENT DURING THESE TIMES - ESPECIALLY WHEN HIS REPLACEMENT IS THE ETHICALLY BESMERCHED VILLAGE IDIOT.

One of two things are obvious right now:

Either their refusal to release Palin's medical records is simply a ruse to substantiate the refusal to submit McCain's current medical history.....OR....

Maybe Palin's pregnancies don't add up....or worse....maybe there's an abortion somewhere hidden within this refusal?

The country is speculating right now about the reason(s) this young, supposedly healthy candidate is refusing to release her own medical records.

The longer she waits; the more speculation there is about either abortion or questions about Trig.

It seems to be the topic of conversation nationally right now as people find another reason to eliminate John McCain from the presidency.

Yesterday after the release of the Times article, it's all people were talking about.

The longer McCain waits to release these records to qualified physicians capable of interpreting them, the more votes he loses because people see that he has something to hide - his unfitness to serve a 4 year term.

With his health history and prognosis for the future (very dire) this man has no business running for this office. He's also then committed a treasonous act of selecting someone so pitifully unqualified to replace him.

The election will show that the "Palin Plunge" has become a real situation in our election where for the first time in our history and bottom of the ticket tanks the top of the ticket.

It's happening everywhere. Palin is plunging McCain into the loser category. GOP insiders and Powell know this to be true and so do the american people.

PREGNANCIES............

All candidates have a right to privacy. We don't need to know if they've had an abortion, a social disease, or a broken arm. Frankly, no one knows, really, when their time is up as evidenced by Biden's anuerysm. Anyone can have an unexpected health emergency. Candidates should be voted for based on their stand on the issues, ability to express their ideas, voting record, choice of running mate, and history.

Oh, but I DO want to know if my candidate is suffering from any sort of ailment that may affect their ability to make important decisions that will affect the whole country.

Would you hire a driver who suffers from narcolepsy?

Much less expose us to what repugs claim to be Palin's experience to prepare her for major office.

You need to see this video from Comedy Central's visit to Wasilla and what they found.

I doubt if Tiger Woods or Barack Obama lose any sleep over what Limbaugh thinks. I'm a Texas Democrat and proud of it!

After hearing Limbaugh's opinion of Obama, Powell, Biden, Tiger Woods and anything Democrat or black, one thing is obvious. Hate makes you fat.

Poor old Rush. He has to grab onto the most salacious, incendiary comments in order to snag headlines. This man has reached the desperate mode.

The only thing Rush continues to do is make himself look small as far as personal integrity goes. He's not small; in fact, he's become a human heffer lately.

first of all,and in case no one already brought this up,for most of his adult life GEN powell couldn't publicly endorse white libs,or anyone else for elected office because he was in the army.secondly,as many who post here know,o'bama's "liberality" is a quality many, but not all his supporters are merely hoping for.obama is running a campaign which welcomes everyone, unlike some we could mention.over the years many decent americans who are different from,or in some other way, have offended the lardassed bullies who dominate right wing "talk" radio, have taken lots of crap from rush-he may have overreached here by moving through the stench into john birch's territory.

The REpublicans cannot win on the issues. You alr3eady know this. They are pandering to their base. They are using their base (Limpdick and Palin and the others. the list is too long to name here.) to pander to the base. Their base is about racism and hate and division. Not issues. that is why Limpdick and Savage and Melanie Morgan and Coulter and Milkin and the rest are so successful. If you want an eye opener go check out one of the right wing web sites. It is truly a scary thing.

Was Stabbed and beaten and near death.

The right know haw to divide. They do not know how to unite. They are not capable of it.

You got some 'splainin to do Moosey'.

is that Limbaugh is irrelevant, and he knows it.

race only matters to racists; the rest of us judge by character and qualifications.

But it's the 'irrelevant' racist that has the million-dollar budget and syndicated radio show.

As education levels drop, the appeal of jingoistic nationalism like Rush and his ilk spew increases.

i guess if there is anything that the Palin candidacy has shown us, it's that you are right about the rise of jingoism in the U.S. and the ongoing (increasing?) appeal of this kind of crap to a certain segment of the population.

i tend to forget this because i completely tune out Fox News, Palin, and right-wing-nuttery in general. it's just too annoying and stupid and i personally don't have the patience or tolerance to confront it where i find it IRL. i have friends who patiently call people out on this stuff all the time, but i can't seem to take that route without it devolving into a shout fest.

i have high hopes that an Obama Presidency will set an example for us all as to how to rise above all of this hatefulness. i believe that his approach is the one that will appeal to the better angels of our nature.

I work in television news (a CBS O&O), so I can't get entirely away from it. When I go on vacation, I almost insist on not watching any news - I can skim a newspaper, but I try not to watch broadcast media, even Keith Olberman.

There are times where even a calm and measured response to the right-wing line is extremely burdensome to one's soul. Even a quiet prayer once in a while doesn't quite purge the stench, and I wonder how Barack Obama keeps his temper. Maybe it's just because he's aware of the stakes.

Expression?

Certainly being put to the ultimate test that is obvious.

It's not easy when your stomach is convulsing with nausea to have to permit the Limbaughs and Coulters their "right" to this stuff is it.

Gets back down to the basics of just how screwed up this country is.

They wouldn't exist if they weren't paid handsomely by the corporate media.

-and none of us should be- at the vileness of this campaign. I would suggest that we all knew how bad it would get. And I'm sure Obama did too,as evidenced by his smooth brushoff at every dirt clod thrown his way. After all,he's been his skin color all his life,so I'm sure he's seen this swill before.

i honestly did not think we'd actually see parodies involving watermelons and fried chicken, or death threats, or so much use of the n-word. i honestly didn't expect it to go THAT low. i really need some kind of drug for my idealism/naivete. :P

we all like to believe in the basic goodness of people. Unfortunately RePugs have none.

I am sure this is a big reason that Obama is winning. The McCan't campaign offer nothing except hate and trash. Obama offers solutions. He speaks to the issues. That is what the Independents want to hear. It is what the undecideds want to hear. They want to be informed and McShame is not informing anybody about anything.

I recall a Limbaugh interview this year where he said he 'won't be happy till everyone thinks like him".
He'll be lucky if he's not worm food before they start playing clips of his broadcast to schoolchildren to illustrate how ignorant and pathetic some people were 'back in the day'.
They'll sit open mouthed in disbelief the way we do over clips of Bull Connor in the 60's.

Rush is just mad because he can't get it up anymore without drugs.
He's gotten so fat he can't find his penis anymore.

I have to say he did look rather like a slug on the clip I saw. He looked all greasy and his $300 shirt fit him like a tent and he just looked like you would expect him to look.

Whenever I see Rush, I always think of the slimy Jabba The Hutt.
Only difference was jabba was better looking of the two.

It's impossible to love and respect others when you don't love and respect yourself.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!! Limbaugh is coming fully unhinged. Of course, the Obama win will be a blessing for his ratings, but I bet this scum bag fully blows it w/in the next year. Total nervous breakdown! I rarely wish badly for anyone, but Rush is a clear exception. And when he does go down, I hope he takes all of the egos of the useless, non-productive, waste-of-space racists who have been deluded into thinking they are "special" by birthright (and not by deeds) that he's been pumping up along with him. The rest of the world will hear a collective passing of gas from these losers when Limbaugh goes down.

Why is it when a white politician endorses another white politician no one accuses him/her of being racially motivated? Once could make an argument with Lieberman.

Um, are you implying that black people can, like, think about issues and have stances on them and vote accordingly?? C'mon, they can barely get it together enough to figure out who's black and white (look how long it took Colin Powell!) - the ONLY way blacks know how to vote, don'tchaknow. I mean, obvs.

I would make a good conservative! I should move to Real Virginia or something.

This quote really strikes me -

"I thought you liberals thought this was a historic candidacy because finally we are going to elect a black guy…why hide behind this, why act like it's not about race?"

The ultimate example of how conservatives like Rush just don't get it. They think that the significance of Obama is in the actual *act* of electing him - that we might feel pride becuase Obama is black, and president (fingers crossed!). But in terms of historical significance it's not about Obama, specifically at all - it's about what this says about us as a society - that we've gotten to the point, at least, where someone of color was able to get the education, the career advances and the popularity that one needs in order to even be in the position of running for president (with a good chance of winning), without his race having stoped him cold at any point. We're not particularly feeling pride about the fact that Obama is black - it isn't about Obama the person. It's pride for our country's progress (not that someone like Rush would know anything about that - feeling proud of your country because it does something worthy of it, and not just out of blind, partisan patriotism).

Sorry for the ramble.

For me it is much more about how well he is going to do as President after the complete idiot we have now. Obama is just the best choice we have. Period.

should feel that way. But,as we have seen, millions of Americans don't want minorities to advance in society.

Clarance Page is right,Limbaugh makes no sense because Gen. Powell was black last year, and this sprong, but did not endorse Obama at that time.

I have read more misinformation being spread in this Presidential election than any I can remember in the past. My e-mail box is full of forwarded rumors trashing Obama for being a Terrorist, a Muslim, misquotes taken from his book about his Father, false statements he is quoted as having said on Face the Nation and other interviews.

So many votes are being lost for Obama because people simply believe this garbage without fact checking. Why are so many Americans so unwilling to research the facts before placing their vote based on these lies? This is probably the most effective voter fraud occurring. Lie to the masses - 50% + will believe it.

We should put as much care into our choice for President as we put into making choices for our children. Our country deserves this.

Helen

My lastest mail told me Obama wants to KILL MY CHILDREN and SELLS CRACK COCAINE on his spare time. Or something to that effect.

I know they're full of shit, but the robocalls and mailings sound scary to someone who doesn't follow politics very much. Obama needs to start battling them someohow - coutnermailings, not just TV commercials. Also would be nice mailings or something to people locally reminding the day to vote, and where their voting place is, how to vote early, ect..

This is why it ticks me off so much when I have family members sending internet rumors via e-mail, or asking me 'is this true?'

I can refer them to Snopes, to the Urban Legends page, go over for the umpteenth time all the little giveaways that say fraud ...

"Well, if this stuff makes you mad, I won't email you anymore!"

"You replied to everyone on the list and now my friends are mad at me!"

One aunt sent me the 'Andy Rooney' e-mail, where Rooney supposedly lit off on immigrants. Only it didn't happen. I replied, "Before you send something like that out again, you might want to check the CBS website, or ask the family member who works for CBS."

Dead silence.

It's the plague of know-nothingism and the convenience of 'expert media'. You don't have to think, you have Rush to tell you what to think.

This would be outrageous if it weren't so predictable. He's like clock-work. We know what he's going to say before he says it.

But as I watched this sad, pathetic, little man cup his hands and shout into the microphone..."This is all about race," I quite honestly felt sympathy for the guy, or perhaps it was pity.

Looks like the Republicans are getting exactly what they deserve. Electoral euthansia.

Rush Limpbaugh is a racist. Whenever anyone tells me what he said I always feel like takin a shower and washing the dirt off……. He is a miserable little man regurgitating what the Dark War Lords tell him. His broadcasts are nothing but -static over the airwaves. What is it about some America's fascination with the insane? I'd also love to see him buried in the desert up to his neck with sand- and left in the sun by all his crazy worshippers.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!! Limbaugh is coming fully unhinged.

I certainly hope that poor old Rush doesn't suffer some type of medical condition from all this anxiety...bless his heart. ; 0 )

Bless his heart wink

Mr. Niewert, please avoid such esoteric, technical political terminology in the future... Who do u think u are, William F. Buckley?? /snark/

Rush just thinks that everybody else thinks like he does. Since he is a racist and thinks like a racist he ASSumes everybody else thinks the same way. He's a hateful small minded bigot and we should be turning our energies out to make sure that all this mudslinging does not damage our candidate's chances for a victory! Get online and go to nonpartisan blog sites and list FACTS. Tell people the good things about Barack Obama. write to the news networks and demand they address ISSUES and not just cover replays of rumor and innuendo ad nauseum.

Psychology 1011, Limbaugh projects his own self hatred out onto other people. Medical 101. Negative thoughts can cause cancer. I predict a sorry end for this miasmic fool.

Ever notice how Republicans don't grow old terribly well?

It's the vitriol of their daily thoughts, the resentments and petty hatreds they lug around all the time.
