Today's Washington Times has an article talking about a battle going on between the Ohio GOP and John McCain:

In Ohio, long-boiling friction between the McCain campaign and the state Republican Party on a variety of issues reached a new intensity over a complicated local gambling question. The state Republican Party's central committee had voted to oppose a proposed state constitutional amendment to permit a casino in Clinton County. The state party included its "vote no" view on the "slate card" of recommendations it sends to early voters.

The McCain campaign unilaterally removed that recommendation from the mailer, overriding Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett and threatening to block funds to pay for the printing and distribution. Mr. McCain favors legalized gambling, and his campaign did not want to appear to support it some states and oppose it in others.

The state party worked with the opponents of the amendment to send another mailing, using the pictures of U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich, Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted and Mr. Bennett, along with their words of opposition on the gambling question.

"Why in the world would anyone want to amend the Constitution of Ohio and put a monopoly in for one individual to build one casino in the state of Ohio?" Mr. Voinovich asks in his statement.

Joe Sudbay brings up the fact that McCain has serious ties to the gambling industry, which could be his reason for breaking with the Ohio GOP. That is most likely only part of the reason though.

Wilmington, Ohio is home to a large DHL hub that is facing closure. This hub provides 8,000 jobs to the area. The fate of the DHL hub was in no small part due to the actions of Rick Davis and John McCain, who championed for foreign acquisition of DHL.

Amendment Six will bring approximately 5,000 jobs to the Buckeye State. The casino is also slated to be built in the Wilmington area, which would greatly help reduce the impact of McCain and Davis' doings. Also worth mentioning is that Wilmington is a highly Republican area. Bush won the area 70% to Kerry's 29% in 2004.

So McCain can't only go against the gambling industry, which he has supported vigorously over the years, but he also can't look like he is trying to drive away thousands of new jobs in an area that is facing certain economic hard times by the loss of their biggest employer - something McCain helped bring to fruition. This has put McCain in a very sticky situation, which is indeed true karma.

He's going to run out of feet to shoot...

watch this cop shoot himself in the foot!

This is indicative of the kind of president he would be. He would override the state's power with his own federal will. He would override the congress with his own executive will.

big surprise...

I don't personally favor gambling, but either way, I think the State Republican party has the right to define their own policy platform in their state and let the people vote for it... it's called representative democracy.

I have no respect left for McLame

Talk about getting to the heart of the matter succinctly. Bravo.

thank you very much :)

What about that?

The federal govt doesnt like states rights and tend to ignore them...for an example look at California.

California has legalized marijuana for medical use, but many people who grow the stuff (legally w/ a permit) and supply it to pharmacies are getting busted by the FEDS anyway.

but you are talking about BUSH'S feds, who also went after "death with dignity" in OR, if I recall correctly. Yes, they are feds, but they are Bush feds, which makes a great deal of difference when you talk about civil liberties.

Indeed I agree "Bush's feds" are different. although Democrats sure havent done much to stop (them) i.e. Patriot act, homegrown terror act, wiretap immunity, bailout...ect...ect...

It looks like Obama is going win so...we will soon see if Obama feds are really different.

I wonder who Barak will appoint as Attorney general?

Until they are cleaned out they will be Obama's Fed's, too. Here's hoping Obama uses lots of bleach in the cleansing process. :D

Well, I guess that happens when you marry a mob boss's daughter.

Hey Mudshark! By chance do you have any links or attributions to support the mob boss' daughter claim? I would like to read them.

Easily googled . . . look at her pappy's and his pappy's backgrounds. Hell, even WIKI covers some of it . . .

mob

From what I've read it sounds like he had ties to the mob. He wasn't a boss. They made him rich and he helped them circumvent liquor laws. Probably not any dirtier than old Joe Kennedy...but that's bad enough. Bootleg, anyone?

The public should get a view into the background of Lindner, Keating and McCain, which essentially boils down to big Mafia money that has flowed into the GOP and various extreme Rightist groups around the world since Meyer Lansky made a deal with the Republicans in the mid-1940s.In exchange for their legalized gambling and liquor concessions, Top Bosses Lansky and Giancana straightened up the mob's image in the southwest, in exchange the GOP (along with elements of the CIA) got a piece of the action. Why not they have got so many people putting their money in the stock market might as well do casino gambling as well.
The stock market is a ponzi scheme like playing roulette!

He may be in trouble in Florida too. He spurned our Republican Gov. Charlie Crist for VP and Crist just extended our early voting hours in a big way.

We are excited because the early voting is attracting millions of mostly Dem. voters so the longer the polls are open the better it is for us.

in a town with a casino. Even before the current economic meltdown it was quite surprising how many local people lost their homes to gambling. I'm sure this will be an equally big help to the people of Wilmington.

Let me guess...do you live near a Wall Street perhaps?

just gamble with their own futures. Not everyone else's.

WORST RUN CAMPAIGN EVER!!!!

Do you think that a McCain/Palin Presidency would actually be any different?

Not really; however, I'd like to say that I never imagined such a train wreck as McCain/Socialist in my wildest dreams. I mean their whole campaign has been one blunder after another. It's kind of sad don't you think?

How is one casino going to bring 5000 jobs to the state? Are they counting construction and design of the building as new jobs (which are temporary)?

How can a Casino fly in an area you can't buy a Playboy magazine or buy liquor on Sunday?

New McCain team mascot = Pete the Pitboss!

Probably including prostitution and drugs.

Full time gambler counts as full time employment. No benefits other than broken legs for poor job performance.

And you can't compare the wages paid at a DHL hub with those of a casino.

DHL hub is consistent and likely well paid. Even with some union, maybe?

Casino? On call, based on how busy, short shifted from 8 hours to 4. No way to guarantee a full work week . . . . Same as restaurant or fast food work.

Since Reagan broke the Air Traffic Controllers nationally, it's been downhill.
And it was downhill here in CA with him for 8 years, just look at the educational system, the homeless population (result of cutting back on state mental health facility's and services).

GOBAMA! I smell some reform coming. I LOVE the smell of reform in the morning! :D

Its no surprise that McCain would ignore the needs of working people in order to enrich himself and his buddies.

The casino/gambling industry offers no employment comparable to that of a shipping/courier service such as DHL. Rethuglicans claim that worker costs caused them to run from the US, but that's a lie.

The fact is that the core of the Republican philosophy is that the majority should bargain their labor in a market tightly controlled and regulated by the minority for the benefit of the minority.

Casino workers work long hours at low pay on the par of typical service workers, with few or no benefits, much less no guarantee of long term employment. That is the Republican vision of America, the majority slaving at bare (if at all) subsistence in order that they may increase the wealth that often dwarfs third world nations.

This is just getting too painful to watch.

Hey, Senator Cloud-Yeller-Atter, 538 says you got a 0.06% chance of victory if you lose Ohio. You think maybe the crooked Ohio GOP have the precise arse you should be kissing right now? Don't you want to motivate them to steal the election for you like they did for your buddy four years ago?

I always thought the whole point of the Manchurian Candidate was to win the election first, then take down the government. You're activating too soon!

Had to read it several times to understand what it meant.

Oh, well, next time ...

Likes to gamble himself and figuratively gamble by choosing an unknown veep candidate, supports the gambling industry over the Ohio GOP, doesn't work well with others ... McCain's fatal flaws will lead to his defeat. He is definitely a character out of Shakespeare.

McCain has been know to be a very big gambler himself over the years and has big ties to the gambling industry. Some Maverick!!! Also, would seem to go against the evangelical base.

Check-out this story:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/us/politics...

He personally admits he ran for ambition, not issues, and the rest of the parts shows proof of him lying in his own words on lots of critical topics (economy, national security, etc).

Check out the NY Times article on the subject, or HuffPost's reprint of that article. Note a possible link to the "Yugoslav gambling mafia" as detailed in Edward Humes' Mississippi Mud. McCain's family originally is from Mississippi, a state of truly legendary poverty and corruption. I suspect family ties to the Ohio Wrights as well, and this bunch has a historically large stake in inflated government contracts.
Ohio needs jobs in general--their ruling junta has run them out, stolen them out, and zoned them out. Legalized gambling will bring them in, but just who will be running the casinos, and how much other troubles will they bring in with them?

What has been discussed very little is the fact that Chuck Norris who was endorsing Huckabee owned, and may still own, a gambling casino in Russia called Chuck Norris' Beverly Hillos Casino. This was one of the central topics in a book published some years back entitled "A Fistful of Kings",by John Brotherton,a casino executive who went to Russia to run the Norris enterprise.

The mention of Mississippi brought to my mind their Governor Haley Barbour. Barbour goes back a long way to DC's"K" Street,as a best bud and fellow lobbyist of Jack Abramoff. When McCain chaired the Bureau of Indian Affairs "investigation" into Abramoff,Ralph Reed and others' ties to Indian Casinos corruption, much of the damning info was concealed from the public by McCain, as BIA Chair. In particular, one e-mail that directly ties the railroading of Alabama Governor Don Segilman, in order to keep gambling IN Barbour's state of Mississippi, and OUT of Alabama. The actual e-mailwhich McCain, withheld,is produced in a piece by Sam Stein for Huffington Post, dated Feb.'08,entitled "McCain withehld Controversial Abramoff e-mail". I strongly recommend everyone read this article. It's STUNNING![BTW, if a lobbyist wanted to launder money, and leave no trace of even giving a politician money, what better way than giving it to him in the form of gambling chips?]

I've heard people connect the distribution of the 28 million Obsession DVDs, which cost millions upon millions, to Sheldon Adelson, one of the richest men in America and a huge McCain supporter. He is a billionaire casino developer and is thought to have funded the making of Raphael Shore's "documentary." http://www.onlinenevada.org/sheldon_adelson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael_Shore

So the hatefest DVD could simply be a way for casino developers to score some big favors.
