All day long MSNBC has had on one pundit after another using the election in NY-23 as their springboard to make the case that the Dems are weak. There hasn't been a Democrat elected in that seat for more years than I've been alive, but that doesn't seem to enter into the equation.

The real story, though, is the fighting going on within the GOP. Rudy Giuliani was on with Chuck Todd and saying that the GOP will never win national elections if they never win in NY and California and so there needs to be a more inclusive Republican party. NY-23 didn't pan out that way for Rudy and he had to figure a way to lighten the blow. He said that Scozzafava was really a liberal and implied that he told Newt not to back her. He said the GOP needs moderates in the party, but they have to be 80% with them on issues and 20% against.

Of course Chuck Todd either couldn't be bothered to check Scozzafava's voting record and history on issues or decided to give Rudy the floor with no opposition because Scozzafava is not 80% liberal and 20% conservative, as Giuliani claimed.

The reality is this: When people say “don’t judge a book by its cover”, you should take their advice. The “cover” on Scozzafava was that she was this progressive Republican because she was backed by the WFP, supported a woman’s right to choose and has been a supporter of marriage equality. But the “book” tells the whole story (as it usually does). Scozzafava has a few positions that are more liberal (on abortion and marriage equality) but most of her positions are, at best, moderate-to-conservative. More often than not, however, she is a conservative.

This race is interesting to watch just to see the Villagers scurry around and try to make it a national story, but at least they could take the time and get their facts straight.

Tip Of The Spear

I'm not sure if the teabaggers will have much success in purifying their party, but it'll be interesting to see how the Villagers will react. My guess is they'll portray them as just folks exercising their patriotic duties, unlike those dirty fucking hippie traitors who ran a primary against the greatest man in America, Joe Lieberman.

The cable shows are covering these races as if the outcome will determine if Obama should step down as the president.

And very predictably, as the results come in, Doug Hoffman is claiming that ACORN is stealing the election.

At a short press availability in his campaign office here, NY-23 Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman said that a GOTV volunteer’s tires had been slashed, and all but blamed Democrats for the dirty trick. “There are reports that they’re bringing in the troops and they’re bringing in ACORN,” said Hoffman. “I think the Democrats are doing anything they possibly can to steal this election away from the 23rd district.”
--
Update: Anton Troianovski of the Wall Street Journal followed up with the Plattsburgh police on this, and was told that the volunteer actually damaged his tire on a broken bottle. I asked Hoffman campaign manager Dan Tripp about this–he said he had no comment because the campaign had not heard this yet.

They will blame ACORN for everything. Digby sees this through the prism of her brilliance.

I just hope that all the major networks and newspapers assign a special reporter to look into these accusations by the teabaggers' darling. Certainly Fox will be running with them and everyone knows that the mainstream press has been remiss by failing to follow up on such important Fox investigations.

It's actually a smart move. Since Fox has intimidated the pants off of the other news organizations, they will bend over backwards to be "fair and balanced" thus lending credence to the ACORN meme.

I just hope they don't end up accidentally arresting Hoffman's African American staffer in their zeal to reveal the ACORNs in the woodpile.

Why do "the villagers" bow to the "teabagger" crowd so much. As is stated here, they are portrayed as patriotic Americans exercising their patriotic duty as opposed to liberal traitors and dirty f*cking hippies who would dare oppose Lieberman, or challenge Blue Dogs.

Are the "teabagger" demographic the most coveted 24/7 Cable News watchers? Are they the only ones who have nothing better to do than religiously watch all the banter and bickering that is considered news on these shows all day? Or is it still that old fear of being labelled the "left-wing media"?

I find it hard to believe that the "media elite" are sympathetic to the teabagger crowd since they too are opposed the the MSM, are against corporate welfare and a good percentage of the Ron Paul faction are anti-war too. All the things the MSM loves about being neo-con cheerleaders are non-issues with teabaggers. So what's the reason they are afraid to portray these "Real Americans" as dirty f*cking hillbillies?

exactly what they are told to report on and how to slant their reporting. Oh. wait. They do. They are all corporate owned, and those who own and run them are too smart to shoot themselves in their collective feet. It would all be a joke if it didn't mean life and death to so many. Health reform, pollution, toxic food, pensions. What a big mess.

Didn't brittany flash her whassis again?

like chess pieces.

But this is on MSNBC. I know the media hates us dirty f'ing hippies, but why so much love for the crazies who think Lindsey Graham is too liberal? I thought the MSM loved their establishment war-mongering, tax-cut for the wealthy Republicans like Graham and McCain and Lieberman. This new flock of ultra-conservatives are replacing the establishment with people that think Bill O'Reilly is too mainstream. It seems like these people aren't exactly ideal candidates for the MSM's love.

Just making fools of themselves. It is Dick Armey - and the propaganda wing of the GOP. Now they've made themselves a monster. Thus the infighting.

These folks are "Real Americans" just like Cletus in the KKK is a real Christian. I find it hard to believe they are even serious let alone sincere.

)O(

It's the ID-ten-T virus?

CNN & MSNBC have been crowing that todays election will be a referendum against Obama. A vote wasn't even necessary, they already decided before the votes were in.

if Hoffman wins?

*tin foil hat*

You know how the GOPhers are always accusing people of the stuff the GOPhers actually do . . .

“There are reports that they’re bringing in the troops and they’re bringing in ACORN,”

So I bet it was the GOP bringing their troops in.

To get these idiots down to a point that they could do no harm would be great. I hope they go the way of the dinosaurs. We don't need these fucking fools messing up everything they come into contact with.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!

The Republican party can't purge these people or they lose whatever hopes they have of getting re-elected. Sadly, when Obama and the Democrats won, there seemed to be the stirring of the revolutionary ideas - you never heard about these under Bush. They stoked the fire, kept feeding it, and now it's out of their control.

I think the reason they keep playing to it is because now they are generally afraid if they try and reign it in, they themselves will be killed. Better to stir the fire against the other side than to risk getting shot yourself.

I never realized how afraid I am for the continuity of this country until I watched the reds start bashing Gingrich over his endorsement - eating one of their own so they can start this revolution of theirs which will not be bloodless.....

New York's 23rd district is a reliable Republican seat, has been since the civil war. A one half term Democrat who gets a temporary seat because the Republican vote was split isn't going to change it to a reliable Democratic seat.

But, a Hoffman win emboldens the teabagger 9-12'ers and the Club for Growth in their effort to take over the Republican Party. And the more successful they are at that, the more horrified independents will turn away from the crazies and toward the Democratic Party.

In fact, if George Soros, Acorn and MoveOn were really the evil geniuses they are reputed to be by the crazies, then they would be secretly funding FreedomWorks and Glenn Beck in order to secure the Tea Party/9-12/Club for Growth led destruction of the GOP.

HA!

Good point!

The plus is watching the infighting - they get sleazy with each other.

as good or better for us than the Blue Dog, Owen, winning. Win-win for us.

newspaper web sites. Very odd.

People over that way don't care for outsiders coming in and trying to tell them what to do. Which means Hoffman isn't doing well and of course the MSM doesn't want to have to report that since they've been playing up his big win. Teabaggers are driving the country socialist and I say GOOD!

leading Hoffman...

Michael Steele. HA!

There's "change" I can believe in...

that a win by Hoffman in NY23 doesn't really mean that much. But how do you feel about the Repubs winning the Governor elections in Vermont and NJ?

Virginia always elects a governor from the opposite party of the president, and Deeds was a weak candidate "I'd opt out of a public option", and got no support from Obama.

New Jersey will hurt, Obama worked hard for Corzine. Obama loves guys from Goldman Sachs, but apparently the voters don't, even in Blue New Jersey.

Let's hope this starts of trend of Goldman Sachs people leaving government.

support from Obama? You don't consider personally campaigning with him support?

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/politics/Ob...

http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/665435...

I should have said "lukewarm" support - especially compared to Obama's support for Corzine.

From what I can see Deeds pretty much rejected the help and advice of local experts (Kaine) and the DNC in planning his campaign, and then tried to blue dog health care reform just before having Obama fly in for a last minute save.

Not exactly brilliant.

http://www.brutallyhonest.org/brutally_honest...

Where the F**K have you been???

And we sent a Socialist to the Senate in the same election! And expect more Socialists sent to Washington from us in the coming years!!

small brain fart I meant Virginia, no idea why I typed Vermont.

Doesn't Virginia usually elect Republican Governors?

.

recent election they have been 50/50 over the past dozen elections. And before that straight blue till the late 1800s.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governor...

troll

By that you mean the pro-slavery party? Never heard them called blue before, not in the modern context anyway.

You're REALLY stretching you know that don't you. What do you want people here to say "OH MY GOD we never saw that coming! This is the end of the Democratic party! Oh My GOD!" Because I gotta tell ya pal you're out to lunch with your teabag trolling tonight.

The guy that most people knew would most likely win, won. It's NOT a big story dude!

And your teabagger pals helped a Democrat win a Congressional seat in a safe Republican district! hahahahahahahahahaha

Make up shit on someone else's site, please.

.

perhaps, but not crushed. We'll see what happens next year nationwide. A special election for a partial term in the House doesn't really concern me to much. If the Repubs were losing a seat in the Senate I would be more concerned.

then. :-)

We'll see, I'm not making any predictions yet.

It amazing that these contracdictions come out of his mouth. He threw all of the right-wing slime at Obama during the presidential campaign, that is coming out now, and now he wants to dial it back. What a hypochrite.

just won't go away now. Rudy! Go away! Shoo!

By that you mean got in bed with them, right? Because I seem to recall that would be a closer description.

Kerik

process, I've heard. Never been to NYC, but thanks to Gouhliani, it's slipped further down my list of places to see before I die.

It's wonderful.

Great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Well maybe for a little while but not for long.

more or less an East Coaster (after spending most of my life in CA), I'd like to see the big eastern cities. If the old biddies can drive down to Miami to haunt us, I can reverse the trend for at least a week or so...

about that. Where are they now? Dead or in prison. He took the starch right out of them. Once they started ratting on each other, they couldn't stop. I certainly would never try to defend Rudy or his ethics, but I think he won that battle. Of course, I could be wrong.

Can we finally nix guests, hosts that call the Democratic Party the 'Democrat' Party?

I'm truly sick and tired of the hosts being limp-dicked on the terminology.

If I can call yours the Republicanker Party

Republi-shanker Party myself.

I like to keep at least a thin layer of protection between me and the 'enemy'.

"The future, my son, is plastics..."

announcing that the 'Thug candidate beat Corzine. Damn, I wish I had Fux at my motel for a little 'balance'...

Hoffman 46%

with 55% of precents reporting is what they're saying at HuffPost

Like I said earlier this is why the MSM isn't talking about this race anymore. It's not going the way they predicted at all.

*

NYT is reporting with 71% counted it's at:
Owens 49.1%
Hoffman 45.2%

The teabaggers have cut off their nose to spite their face!

But you know as well as I they'll say "ah that race didn't matter to us." As they cry themselves to sleep. That was their big one because the radically far right candidate was all theirs. Since they've been making such a big deal about that race this will hurt their sick little movement. The Republican candidate would have had an easy win if the radicals hadn't stuck their nose in there. VERY nice to see it get cut off!! :-)

But I gotta admit to being a little disappointed too...

...a Hoffman loss might make the teabagger 9-12'ers self reflect and reconsider a bit on their destruction of the GOP.

hahahahahahaha

BEST JOKE OF THE NIGHT!!!!

impounded? Wait'll that story gets legs.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/03/new-...

In the comments they're saying Fulton county. But I'm sure somewhere I read just a couple of polling places. I could be wrong though.

It was just 2 polling locations I believe. They had mechanical trouble and went to paper ballots that won;t be counted until later.

and 4 towns in St. Lawrence Co.
http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20...

ETA and the paper ballots can't be counted until the absentee ballots are opened which won't be until next tuesday.

there still are the mail in ballots...

NY-23 is seating a Democrat for the first time since the Civil War. Congratulations, folks, and good job!

How long before the MSM and pundits forget this race ever existed now that the Democrat has won and the Beck Teabaggers lost? An historic win for a Democrat in a slam dunk district for Republicans? But that would get in the way of the "referendum against Obama" storyline.

After all the hype, I'm hearing very little about the election results. Congrats to NY-23, and in the future, I think Sarah Palin should continue picking winners for the GOP.

And the Repugs seem to favor the kind of purging performed with enemas and laxatives. But no matter how hard they try, they'll always have way too much scheisse in their Party.

Honestly, the Tea Bagger crowd were doing the same thing that the 'moderates' (led by Tricky Dick's ilk; how 'moderate' was that?) did to the Goldwater wing of the GOP back in 1964, only in reverse (this time, it's the far right reactionaries that tried to trash the 'mainstream' Repug) and they got nothing out of it but a Dem in the drivers seat...again (in 1964, LBJ came out of that pissing match amongst Repugs smelling like a perfumed turd).

Don't they read history books? I guess not.

-

"at least they could take the time and get their facts straight."

That is NOT in their job description. 'American Journalist' is defined as taking dictation from politicians and businessmen, knowingly promulgating easily disproven lies, and repeating everything Fox News says.

Fact checking, research, context and background, reporting actual facts, not lying - that's all evil liberalism. That Anti-American stuff has no place on Cable News.

Hoffman does have a 'soul mate' in Palin. Blame everyone else, whine instead of getting you shit together.....
