GMAIL locked me out

What is up with GMAIL? I was locked out all day yesterday because...? I don't know. I usually have my e-mail program open on a couple of computers at the same time almost everyday and have been doing that ever since Gmail started, because I move around my house/office so much.

Why was I suddenly locked out? In their lockout notice, it says that might have caused it, even though they also listed a few other possible reasons that don't apply to me.

I'm working on a chapter for a book -- which is insane all by itself -- so I'm not posting as much this week, but not being able to at least scan my Inbox is a big problem and it feels like I'm partially blogospheric blind.

It's working now, but when you have no access to it I have to say it's very, very weird. And you can't get to GMAIL to find out why this stuff happens. It's like, well, it'll be back in the next 24 hours or so.

If I haven't responded to something I apologize. Now I'll be digging through a thousand emails to catch up. Has this happened to you?

Thanks, GMAIL guys.

Gmail and Hotmail have swiss cheese like security.

don't think it's whole site either because I'm logged into my Gmail account right now. Strange stuff. Hope you get it sorted.

After seeing the lie that is the concept called "Cloud Computing".

crabby's picture

is a mainframe. That is innovation!!

Alerta_Alerta's picture

Isn't cloud computing doing your work online and storing it there? Like google docs?

Edit: you are already connected to a mainframe. Or do you connect to the internet by magic?

say NOTHING when you know nothing.

clouds computing is a bunch of loosely connected computers pretending to act as one. it is supposed to be a way of pesenting a network of computers as a single image, only it's a freaking mess. the people proposing and selling 'clouds' want you to pay through the nose for their 'expertise' in cloud computing.

it's a joke. they haven't designed any security for 'clouds'. LOL

Some stuff you can't make up!

Ah right, thanks for the explanation. Don't know about the mess but i can imagine it tho :p

Fred Fnord's picture

Your description of cloud computing is both insufficient and incorrect.

It is insufficient because it could just as easily be describing my company's eight web servers, which are eight computers pretending to be one web server. If you think that's cloud computing, then that's your definition but certainly not the generally recognized one.

It is incorrect because you say 'it's a joke. they haven't designed any security for 'clouds'.' But, of course, there's no 'they'. There are dozens of companies trying to make cloud computing work, and their security models are just as diverse as their business models, and are bound to vary just as much in effectiveness.

Oh, and as for 'paying through the nose', it's really funny to hear that. If you look at Amazon's implementation of a rudimentary form of cloud computing (multi-machine virtualization and data storage, with customers completely oblivious to changes in machine) it is a solution that, for certain problems, is actually an order of magnitude cheaper than other alternatives. So are a couple of the cloud-computing backup solutions.

It's easy to be a cynic, and you don't actually need any information about your subject. As you so ably demonstrate.

If you're serious about your email, its privacy and reliability, set up your own IMAP server, or use a trusted external host where you pay them and they have to be accountable.

I am forever amazed at the numbers of businesses and bloggers who throw it to the wind when it comes to email.

And it is neither difficult nor particularly costly (for a business) to have a Linux-based e-mail server setup behind a good router, using very cheap hardware. The only prerequisite is DSL or better broadband and a fixed IP address (preferably two).

No. I need a disability lawyer and a Legal Malpractice lawyer in the wrost way, now. I am still working on trying to get some (edit) nice doctor to write me up as at least partially disabled. I have hardly eaten for 2 days, I couldn't hardly move for almost the last 24 hours minus 6 starting now. Downed a 6 pack and took a 10 mg valium just to sleep for 5 hours last night. The police just tried to get me to sell prescription drugs to a minor, just unbelievable. My taxes are messed up just got a 350 fine for not filing local taxes. I paid them in person and lost that paper work within the piles of hospital lawyer confusion papers, while I was 4 months from my injury date trying to move from lack of income.

All the crazy information I have, the pictures the documented day by day treatment, I am about to build a couple time lines of this stuff too, this should be worth 200k or more I think.

I called you this morning, I told you that I want to end this. I mean that I don't want to go to court any more till I feel better.

I was reading ....

Injured workers may receive a lump sum Workers’ Compensation settlement as a compromise and release for all wage loss, claims and future medical expenses related to the treatment of a work injury.

I don't want to sign off like this.

I want to not be bothered for a long while till I know I will be ok.

That is 300 weeks? I want to get another job and forget this stuff for a while, mentally I can't handle it.

I am praying to God that I can work still. I don't want to give up medical expences, I want to give up the courts and the "faker" tests, because they make me hurt.

You have to understand I keep thinking that I feel better, but then I do something. I am so confused, I just want this to end now.

**************************

That was an email, to my lawyer, next time i talked to her she was yelling at me for changing my mind after I read the law, schedualded another hearing, was every 2 weeks, I was so hurt so much pain, pure torture and deceptive liar tactics, She told me on the phone I could sue again. Now they say I can't. Would've recorded every last convosation but in PA it is illegal to do so.

Oh yes I agree in Linux, don't open email in windows, I do but security, like they are saying. Not this box (C&L's) a differnet one.

Tools, advanced, reset, works for some bugs but you loose allot save user names and passwords which you shouldn't type in your pc anyway.

John, you are becoming a very powerfull man, and sure to be hacked some day. Back ups everyday, go IT crazy on this shit.

Fred Fnord's picture

If you're serious about your email, its privacy and reliability, set up your own IMAP server, or use a trusted external host where you pay them and they have to be accountable.

For the latter, sure. For the former, NO NO NO NO NO.

Do not encourage non-server-savvy people to set up their own mail servers. People who aren't server-savvy often do not do, know how to do, or even know that it is a good idea to do any or all of the following:

- choose appropriate passwords
- disable ssh password login and require certificates
- firewall appropriately
- keep server patches up to date
- deal with being blacklisted
- deal with setting up decent anti-spam software server-side
- appropriately back up their servers
- appropriately back up their servers; or,
- appropriately back up their servers

I am an IT professional, and if you had any idea how many people I have had to explain to that a RAID mirror is not a backup, despite their running even their own small business servers for years, you would never give this advice.

Pay someone to run your email for you. It's CHEAP! Don't do it yourself.

when you run MS Outlook, you can run the program offline. you don't *HAVE* to connect to the Exchange server to read old emails, sort through stored emails, etc. - you can't get new stuff, but, your old stuff is there. and, the program loads and runs.

this concept isn't lost on Google. even on this site people have found Google cached versions of pages that someone being reported on has removed or edited. Google caching .. Google understands making, storing and referencing backups and stored data.

***
yea, gmail occasionally fails on me too, Mr. Amato and its really frustrating when you just get some .. "sorry nothing works" fail page. c'mon Google, at least let us browse the stuff we already talked about. its gotta be saved somewhere, I mean, are messages already cached?

same with the calendar and the documents.

Most 24 hour lockouts for Gmail are due to overuse, either too many requests or too much bandwidth. This can be caused by broken software, spyware, or just extreme over-use. Imagine downloading your entire mailbox worth of data multiple times in a single day.

Yes, these aren't necessarily your fault... but gmail has to protect itself as well.

Usually, it should only lock you out of one mode, ie if its an IMAP lockout, you should still be able to use the web interface.

Latest problem is a bug in the new version of Mail.app in Snow Leopard, its listed in the Known Issues section:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?...

Mostly guess work, your comments aren't specific enough to know one way or the other.

Freemail services are loss leaders, and are operated accordingly. It is well-known among all senior experts (anyone with at least 20 years' worth of professional experience) in this area that nearly all of them have massive security holes, chronic and systemic problems with spammers, prolonged outages, and seriously underqualified staff.

Google is not an exception to this. The junior people they have assigned to handling their email system are simply not able to manage it properly, and seem to be far more focused on adding useless trinkets and eye candy to the user interface than on building a service with a rock-solid core. Outages (limited and total) are frequent, anti-spam measures are amateurish at best, and interoperability limited because apparently Google's staff does not know how to read an RFC and follow it.

Oh, gmail's fine for casual use. But no professional should ever rely on it; it's simply not good enough. Not even close.

(But it is worth noting that it's preferable to Yahoo and MSN/Hotmail, both
of which were completely overrun by spammers, hackers, phishers, etc. years
ago and are completely dysfunctional. It's not at all clear that they ARE any staff still minding the store there, as responses to enquiries appear to be (a) automated and (b) illiterate.)

blong's picture

they don't know of what they speak.

because they think they are the experts.

StillSickOfIt's picture

You have to ask yourself, "How much did I pay for this service?". The saying, you get what you pay for seems to fit. These days, you are lucky to get what you pay for, let alone get something for nothing.

I don't know who is hosting this site for you, but you should have your own secure mail server included.

why are you keeping your data on the Google cloud?

Cloudlets, in my case. The home MythTV PVR doubles as the data server for the two of us. A central backup point as well.

brian's picture

This may or may not help with your situation. I had read somewhere a few months back that if you have trouble accessing "regular" Gmail, try hitting the HTML and mobile interfaces in your browser. Sometimes these methods will work, even if Gmail appears to be "down."

HTML:
https://mail.google.com/mail/h/k2ga4ak0z8sx/?...

Mobile/iPhone:
https://mail.google.com/mail/x/gdlakb-/gp/?au...

The mobile option especially is an interesting way to hit Gmail. Best of luck.
