Jon Stewart questions Marc Theissen's twisted soul
This man is just f*&king sick and he's emblematic of the people that worked in George Bush's White House. All of a sudden lawyers are terrorists now. Conservatives will do and say anything for a vote and the media will regurgitate it because it's good for "Ratings." I think Liz Cheney is getting hammered pretty good over her demented ad even by other republicans, but you know most of them still enjoyed it.
How do you think the parents of the victims of Gacey, Dahmer or Bundy felt watching them have representation in court? Everyone knew they were guilty of unspeakable horrors, but that's what makes our justice system as good as it is. I thought the rule of law was something conservative a-holes like Theissen support. What I'm saying is pretty obvious except to the likes of a Bush speech writer. We can add Liz Cheney and Bill Kristol to this new stable of psychopaths.

The clever thing would have been for Jon to broadcast from a Cruise Ship this week. During the Thiessen interview, they could have sailed out to international waters. Then at the end a team from the Hague could have arrested Thiessen. Hm. I wonder if Dick Cheney would enjoy a free cruise?
"The Good and Great Must Ever Shun, That Reckless and Abandoned One
Who Stoops to Perpetrate a Pun," Lewis Carroll, 'The Three Voices.'
Thiessen's just writing and talking about these things - he isn't actually directly responsible. Letting him speak is exactly along the same lines as giving terrorists representation.
cops in Boston has a lawyer. The crazy who opened fire on Pentagon police will have representation. Is that wrong under our Constitution?
But WAIT! They're American! Non-americans don't deserve any rights AT ALL. How can we exploit their country's resources if it's people have rights?
The Blind Sheikh (Omar Abdel-Rahman, born Al Gammaliyyah, Egypt) had a lawyer, as did Ramzi Yousef, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammad Salameh, Nidal Ayyad and Ahmad Ajaj. So that can't be it.

And the Constitutions phraseology talks about the rights of the accused and never go into whether or not the accused is a citizen.

I was just agreeing.
There's no basis for saying the Constitutional Rights are for citizens only, which is what republicans try to argue.
And Article III makes it clear the supreme court has the power to enforce treaties, which presumably include treaties on human rights.
Of course with the roberts court they'll probably argue it's under the 10 amendment rights for states to bring back burning at the stake.

Yep, he said so right there. I wonder if he believes in logical fallacies?
... that which is not expressly prohibited is legal.
It's never going to be some puke like Theissen paying the ultimate price; it'll be someone like Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal, or Sarah Shourd (the three hikers being held as spies in Iran). Or someone nabbed off the street like Nick Berg or Daniel Pearl.
The Republican has no idea how stupid he or she is.

I imagine this dweeb not long ago burning ants with a magnifying glass. All dressed up in a suit but still nothing but an obnoxious peckerhead. He's got nothing. Pathetic shitheel doughdick do-nothing asswhipe. Speech writer for Bush. DEERRRPPP.
This guy knows that if he allows Stewart to speak then his bullshit house of cards will collapse around him.
And I love Jon at the end saying "we'll show the clip uncut so everyone can see how I steamrolled you" - brilliant!
Jon Stewart learned how to "steam roll" his guests thru experience with the incorurageable right wing news casters! There are too many to name but they totally irk me when a guest is winning a point they cut them off knowing they lack knowlege to respond.
And let me get this straight: the Democrats are going to close Gitmo, bring home all of the troops, close all the CIA black sites and prosecute the war criminals.
Just so we are clear on that.
It is important to know who has the moral high ground.

Theissen was a speech writer for GW Bush and Rumsfeld, so that in itself proves how full of shit he is. And all this legal mumbo jumbo he's throwing around? . . . he's not even a friggin attorney.
The protocol is, when you go on someone's show, you have to let them ask questions and then actually answer them. Theissen clearly had no intention of doing that from the start.
It is clear that this guy's strategy was to filibuster and not let Stewart even make any point or ask his questions. In fact, he was steamrolling, not Stewart. He ignored Stewart's questions and then went on to make his own irrelevant points.
but didn't even make it halfway through.

Congress declared war? I must have missed that.
They issued an AUMF which is required for a Police Action, not a war which depends on a Congressional declaration.
But a Police Action has to be reauthorized every 60 days, which was not the practice with the Iraq "War."

There are enemy combatants being held in Guantanamo Bay.
They are there because they are enemy combatants.
They can’t be released, because they may do harm if they are.
They can’t be tried, accused of any crime, defended in court, or given any habeas corpus consideration, because they are enemy combatants, not POWs or citizens.
Never in the history of this country have any enemy combatant been given any such quarter.
Got it.
There is one major problem to all this convoluted circular reasoning. There is no such thing as an enemy combatant. It’s a made up term. Because it was made up, it can be defined any way they want. Everything and nothing applies equally in this case, and you end up arguing that which is meaningless.
Also, silly speech writer…
You can’t defend that which is illegal (torture), by trying to demonstrate that it works. Whether it worked or not – it’s still illegal.
"all this convoluted circular reasoning"
I think I need to lay down for a minute.

As for the more informed and educated with healthy functioning brains and common sense who know they are lying their asses off ? "Screw em ,these people will never be on our side anyway and do not matter!" The Repugs are betting that there are more dumb and ignorant than there are intelligent and informed , they simply have no shame , they are without conscience . The word evil isn't used much these days but these people are evil , the lowest life form on planet earth as far as I am concerned .

Thiessen has worked in Washington for many years, starting with five years at Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly. He spent six years (1995–2001) on Capitol Hill as spokesman and senior policy advisor to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jesse Helms (R-NC).[3] He joined the Bush administration as Chief Speechwriter for Donald Rumsfeld in 2001, then moved to Bush's speechwriting team in 2004.[3] In February 2008, he became chief speechwriter when William McGurn resigned. [4]
In March 2009, Thiessen and Peter Schweizer opened Oval Office Writers LLC.[5]
Thiessen is currently a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. He is also a columnist for The Washington Post, starting March 2010.
Also married to a republican hack living off the tax payers and has four rug rats being groomed for more lying and shilling for murderers and torture affecinados.
Sad part his parents were liberal democrats and doctors His mother fought against the Naziz in Poland where his grand father was murdered by people that his employers admired no doubt. What a sad pathetic little piece of crap!

There is one fact that no one can deny. The fact is that holding a human in a cage without a universally acceptable reason is immoral. Labeling that human an "enemy combatant" does not make the action moral. The fact that so many people disagree with the action proves that it's not universally acceptable.
"Immoral" ? Apparently you haven't heard , good is actually bad , bad is actually good and greed is a virtue , thee only virtue .We've had it wrong all of these years ... according to the right wing / Repugs .
I swear almost all of these wing nuts / Repugs even look odd , you could pick them out in a crowd . Could it be that there been an alien invasion that we are not aware of ?
I don't see it but I don't look much either. There is recent research that shows that people who call themselves republicans have under developed frontal lobes in their brains so they're not able to neutralize their fight or flight impulses (no joke). Maybe it's a constant nervousness, or the results of it, that you're seeing.
as well as inordinate frustration. They are like two-year-olds finding out the world doesn't revolve around them. And they are angry.
And the BEST part was he tried to filibuster Stewart and then bitches that Stewart's response didn't leave HIM enough time to spout more of his bullshit to pollute the atmosphere. What fucking gall!
Democratic Party progressive, Vietnam veteran and proud Union member for 41 years
The Really Best Part was when Stewart pondered how Theissen could get a fair forum -- without anyone else interrupting him as he expressed his arguments -- while simultaneously handling Theissen's book.
Happy birthday, John Amato, and keep up the awesome work!
Happy Birthday!
A couple of things:
WHO did he say was "the 20th hijacker"? Hamdan? I thought Mousaui was "the 20th hijacker"?
He first said "No attacks after the (2001) WTC bombing"... And when Stewart said the same of the '93 WTC bombing, he started naming attacks overseas. if "overseas" attacks "disprove" Stewart, then what about the London Subway bombing on 3/03 or the German train wreck on 7/7? I mean, if "overseas" attacks after the WTC '93 attack prove we weren't kept safe, then I can name a half dozen after 2001 showing the same thing.
* There are two types of Republicans: millionaires and suckers.
"Mugsy's Rap Sheet": Recording history for those who seek to rewrite it.
That's exactly what Stewart said too. The guy was throwing around some very subtle half truths.
The second part of the interview was even better when he kept arguing with Stewart saying that he wouldn't argue a hypothetical, and then started talking about what would have happened if we hadn't tortured Khalid Sheik Mohammed. Stewart wouldn't let him get away with that either.
I never really believed this smug little fuck ever believed the shit he was spewing. He just gave the impression of someone who was convinced that his argument was so air tight that he was insufferably smug.
Yes, the accused terrorist has the right to remain silent. It's because we are a civilized society of grownups, not a bunch of little boys who are afraid of everything that sounds foreign, you little bitch.
(oh, by the way, if I call this guy a shrill bitch, does that mean its not sexist when I call Liz Cheney that?)
Dostoevsky had it about right when he described an interview between the Grand Inquisitor and Jesus in the Brothers Karamazov: even while the Inquisition claimed to be doing the Lord's work, there was no room for the actual Saviour in their plans - torture, murder and control was their object, and Jesus would only have gotten in the way.
These people, Rove, Woo, Theissen, Bush, the Cheneys, and all their disgusting ilk would have fit right in with Torquemada, gleefully consigning the heretics to one great auto-da-fe, with the sole intention of consuming all decency and human feeling in flame.
A wet dream for these "folks" would necessarily involve thumbscrews, the rack and the iron maiden. They are foul, despicable creatures and the only wonder is that, rather than being shunned for the barbarians they are, they are celebrated by a frighteningly large number of Americans.
It is difficult to even find the words to describe what horrible, disgusting beasts these people are - it is as if the human progress of the last five hundred years never happened.
If I'm not mistaken, even the Catholic Church has apologized for the Inquisition - it is clear that no apology, not even a hint of shame, will ever be forthcoming from these (and the word is used advisedly) scum.
At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love.
Poor Marc... It must have been "torture" not being given the right to speak your mind...
might do something bad is a very dangerous idea. Once you accept this idea then it is easy to expand it to minorities, Jews, catholics, gays, old, young, and females. Everybody is a potential criminal and therefore we should arrest everyone so we can feel safe.
fat, white, self-righteous republicans FIRST!
I admit right at the top that I have not watched the clip and I do not intend to for the same reason I turned off the TV when he came on: I have no intention of exposing myself to that much evil.
But I did notice the pull quote on the video about "nothing in the Geneva convention says" such and so.
My immediate - and I do mean immediate - reaction was "Hold it! Are you saying the Geneva conventions apply to these prisoners? Are you saying that the thing that the Bush administration insisted for six years was false was actually true? That the Bush gang lied? Because either you're saying that or what you just said is a bunch of meaningless and wholly irrelevant crap."
Of course, most of what he says is meaningless crap, but you get my drift.
Contradictions(falsehoods, fibs, untruths, LIES!) left, right and center. If they want to say the Geneva Accords apply, they can not torture without facing war crime allegations, but that is how these people work. Marc is an a**hat!
Theissen misses the point completely. Too blind to see that it is fundamental human rights inherent in the American Constitution that is what the terrorists want to destroy. When America becomes a despotic state, then the terrorists have defeated us. In fact, it makes people like Theissen, Bush, Cheney and Obama allies of the terrorists and terrorists themselves for tearing down this country by trying to deny basic human rights to others. It is their fundamental hatred of others, trying to strike back at everyone they hate that makes Theissen and his ilk essentially the same as the terrorists. America is the land of freedom and justice for all people which is what the terrorists hate. When America ceases to be a land of just laws and becomes a land of hatred, bigotry, hatred, racism, hatred a religious inquisition, hatred, injustice, hatred, lawlessness and hatred, then the terrorists have won, they have destroyed America.
Then too, it really is the same objective that right wingers share with terrorists. They seek the power to wiretap without restriction, kill American citizens, torture, beat and waterboard and imprison without restraint all who they regard as their enemies such as liberals, progressives, fags, Commies, pinkos, socialists, non-Whites, illegal aliens, etc. America is great because it is all the things that the right wing and terrorists hate.
Gacey, Dahmer, Bundy, Rameriez, Manson, and all the rest of the serial killers are no threat and easy to treat with justice because they never threatened the real core values of this nation. They got what all Americans deserve, a fair and honest trial. The terrorists really don't threaten what makes America great either. It is those so-called super-Americans who want to destroy our system of justice who are the real threats to the greatness of America.
This nation won't fail if there is another 9/11 or even several of them. This nation will fail, the terrorists will succeed if we allow our fear of the terrorists to destroy all that America stands for. The real terrorists and not bin Laden, the real enemies of America are Theissen, Bush, Cheney, Obama and those who think that by destroying the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the laws of this nation, they will preserve America.
I would suggest you amend this sentence:
"It is their fundamental hatred of others, trying to strike back at everyone they hate that makes Theissen and his ilk essentially the same as the terrorists."
to read as so:
"It is their fundamental hatred of others, in the throes of which they are willing to strike out at anyone they can reach in the absence of those they specifically hate, and to add anyone who disagrees with them to the 'list' of those they hate, that makes Theissen and his ilk qualify for the title of 'terrorist'."
T
Exactly so, vkobaya.
The right-wingers and al-qaeda NEED each other - it's a symbiotic relationship. In our twisted universe, it's not the terrorists who would benefit most from an attack on America - it would be the Republican Party.
And who benefits most from the hateful attitudes and lawless behaviour exemplified by the torturers? America as the "Great Satan" is a marvelous recruiting tool for the Islamists.
They need and feed each other...
At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love.
What a jerk!! He made his point all right. The logic of people like Thiessen is just sick and twisted. Jon Stewart was absolutely right. This guy tried to use Catholic church doctrine to justify torture as well. They didn't buy it either. To suggest that people who disagree with your methods are intentionally making the country less safe OR that they're terrorist sympathizers is deeply offensive, as Jon articulated so well. I'm not sure I can stomach listening to this jerk for the entire interview.
If one tried to defend someone accused of witchcraft often found themselves being so charged.

What a fucking sack of lard. "You talked right through me," oooh, poor baby. Stewart yielded the floor on more than three occasions, the guy got his case out. It was a shitty case founded in no way related to reality, but he got it out.
Chalk up another reason why "conservatives" should be deported.
T
I thought the exact same thing. I thought he was going to cry at the end of this segment. If you have time, check how high he can pile it on the other segments!
Is me or did he seem extremely (visibly) nervous at the start? Someone in this thread mentioned no distinction in fight or flight instincts in repugs, maybe visible proof.
Just went back and watched the entire interview. It was painful. It felt like the guy was twisting himself into knots. Jon does a great job of keeping his cool. Part of what pisses me off about right wingers is their dishonesty. So much of this has absolutely nothing to do with legitimate concerns about national security, but rather more to do with politics, and their desire to demonize the Democrats. Republicans are trying to convince Americans that they're more serious about our security, while Democrats make us less safe, which of course is not true. That being the case, it makes it very difficult to have a real discussion based on actual facts. As Jon pointed out, it is very complex. The right wingers are constantly dealing in hypotheticals that often can't be proven (ie, "we never would have gotten that information without torture"). During the Bush years, it wasn't just the torture. There was clearly a climate created in which prisoner abuse was accepted. Just look at the photos that came out of Abu Ghraib. Theissen was a speech writer, a word smith. So, apparently because he's done a few select interviews, he's an expert on national security.
they are war criminals. Their latest propaganda offensive makes me think that they re getting scared that they could possibly be held accountable for their crimes, so, they are attempting to direct and control the dialogue on the issue in order to redirect the discussion. It seems like a desparation move to me. I expect this kind of thing from the, though...they are some of the worst psychopaths this country has ever produced. It's par for the course. It's the kind of thing that malignant personalities who have influence and power do. Hopefully, they'll be called to accounts.
What bothers me most is how much of the press and media are doing to give these psychos a forum, and how one-way that forum is. There is something profoundly wrong when the only people who are doing actual journalism and who are fulfilling the role of public's conscience are comedians. It bodes ill for our continued survival as a free democracy (actually, I think that the free democracy has already passed away. We are now in dawn of the fascist/totalitarian age of Amerika).
The pink tie he's wearing say's everything that need's to be said about Thiessen!
It's moronic and ignorant jerks like him who make Americans look bad. This idiot defends crapping on the Constitution and breaking the law. to Marc Theissen that they are EITHER POWs or they are criminal terrorism suspects. Not both. And also let him know that the Geneva Convention does indeed require legal representation for POWs who are charged with a crime. The only circumstance that US law or the Geneva Convention allows for no legal representation is if there is no criminal charges. What a complete idiot this America hating clown is!
They can't be, because in either case there are legal requirements for the captors. With this sneaky in-between status, however, they don't need habeas corpus, Red Cross visits, repatriation at the end of hostilities . . . nothing. They can just vanish into a black hole. Because they're dangerous or something.
