I'm from Minnesota and her district has a huge rural conservative base. She runs on the typical wedge issues that connect very well with the people in the district. 90% of the rest of the state is completely embarrassed by her comments and would love to see her gone from politics but unfortunately, the stubborn hicks of her district just don't get it.

I moved from Oakland to Minneapolis twenty years ago. If someone had told me there were hillbillies living up here I would have laughed. To my shock and surprise we have a whole district of them up here. Sorry about that folks.

Democrats routinely make make to huge mistake of identifying the religious right with ignorant, impoverished hillbilly farmers. A high proportion of them are prosperous people living in suburbs or exurbs who attend new churches following the prosperity theology. That's Palin's base. This is what Gelman's "Red State Blue State Rich State Poor State" was talking about.
The adjacent Seventh District is much more rural (66%) and has a centrist (Blue Dog) representative.
The district has been about 50/50 D vs. R over the last decades, but the Republicans are very conservative.
Bachmann (and Palin) like contemporary versions of the old populist types who got farmers to vote for them by talking like farmers, looking like farmers, and even being farmers. They talk and look like a prosperous, anti-intellectual exurban Christians, because that's what they are, and people of that kind love them. Didn't cut it nationally, but for Bachmann it's been successful locally.
They have the money. It's off shore with them.

In a recent survey Minnesota grouped with Oregon as a place fairly evenly split between Democrats who were more liberal than average, and Republicans who were more conservative than average. (Liberals and Democrats have a rather small advantage statewide). In both states the statewide party machinery works very hard to keep the rank and file from nominating a candidate, because they need a "moderate". But in Bachmann's district, a moderate is not needed, though she still could lose.

To make matters worse, they actually passed a bill making it illegal for anyone to bring FOOD and CLOTHING to anyone living in the streets. They thought donations should be made via the local Church instead.

Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann recently did an interveiw where she said some interesting things. She made the accusatory claim that ACORN was under federal indictment. She also made the false claim that ACORN was receiving 5 billion dollars under the recently passed economic recovery bill. Obviously neither of these claims are true nor are in any way shape or form based in reality. Why has she not been removed from her Congressional position and placed in a proper mental health care facility yet??? It is YOUR duty and obligation to both Congresswoman Bachmann and to the American people to see that she is!!!

Minnesota has both right wing nuts - MN-06 - Bachmann's district - just happens to house most of Minnesota's...along with MN-03 - and regular folks like we Liberals. I grew up in MN-06 and all my relatives voted for her simply because of her anti-choice (and probably anti-gay) stance - they wouldn't need anything else and quite frankly, they don't pay attention to much else. I have heard rumors of re-districting before 2010 - so maybe we'll just push her out of a job that way.
Remember - Minnesota is also the land of Rep. Keith Ellison - the first Muslim elected to Congress. Personally I don't give one bit about anyone's religion and it certainly has no place in politics or government, but MN has a diverse population and tons of us are proud Liberals who are just as disgusted by Bachmann's crap as everyone else.
With the additional tax cuts that Bush gave you: how many extra jobs did you create, how many people did you lay off, how many houses have you bought in the last 8 years, and where have you travelled in the last 8 years? Did you make your company more "efficient" to reward your shareholders and did you give any of your workers raises in the last 8 years?
If the answer to any of those questions is not satisfactory, then it is time for that rich person to give back to the country for his/her increased use of the commons.
