they're racists. i remember that "sambo" sign/doll during the election. these people are rude and ignorant. don't bother asking them about real problems and solutions they are clueless. it's much easier for them to be HATEful instead.........the path of least resistance. they rather Blame and Hate people NOT like them instead of taking responsibility ie. BUSH Legacy

Here in northern california my grandmother used to take me to a restaurant called Sambo's I believe it was a chain, and I remember something about a little black boy and a tiger in a mural on the wall that seemed to tell the story on which the restaurant was based. (no it wasn't calvin and hobbes)

Anyone else remember Sambo's? Great pancakes.

fastfeat's picture

(or maybe it was the last to close??) off Coast Hwy in Santa Barbara as a kid. Good pancakes; glad I was too young to have picked up on the racism.

Me too. It was a cool memory and I had no idea. The one I went to was in Chico.

Miss Bob's Big Boy too.

fastfeat's picture

I recently stopped by a place that used to be called Bun Boy (yeah, fill in with your own comments...) in Baker (CA), home of the world's largest thermometer. Surprisingly, it had been changed to a Bob's Big Boy!

:p

Your kidding! I always wondered why no one brought those back. I would think they would be a bigger success than 50's diners.

bjtwuk's picture

I'm 51 years old. When I was a boy ... about 10 years old ... my mother used to take me to Reseda, California (in the San Fernando Valley) to visit my grandmother. The three of us then went to a restaurant called Sambo's for breakfast. It was a nice diner. I remember the little boy and the tiger artwork. I had heard that the name of the restaurant used to be "Little Black Sambo's" but they changed the name due to criticism that it was a racist name.

Can O Whoopass's picture

yet, the owner of the original Sambo's in Santa Barbara, CA was a black chef named... Sambo.

Tom's picture

I remember them. They were popular as hell when I was kid. I can't remember what they all turned into though.

then Went into Bankruptcy, Around the time of the Dot Bomb economic disaster, They then emerged in some parts of the country as Bakers Square, and In other parts as Godfather Pizza, Continental Restaurant, etc.

Jimmi the Grey's picture

There was one in Salem, Oregon when I was a kid (the '70s). Ya, very good pancakes, and other breakfasts. Funny how I never got that there was any racism in it's theme, probably because it wasn't pointed out to me. I thought the boy and tiger were cool.

curtilingus's picture

Sambo's would let you sit down if you were black. Can't say the same about Denny's.

miss_kitty's picture

in the back next to the kitchen and/or close to the toilets. That's what happened to my friends in Hawaii. They had a nice trip, otherwise.

Can O Whoopass's picture

it wasn't a chain called "Klanny's". They'd seat you next to the 'other than white' water fountains with a sign that said, "Cook your own food".

miss_kitty's picture
yes

they turned him into an Indian (Asian) as if that was less offensive. I remember eating there. But I can go you one better, In Seattle we had a restaurant called the Coon Chicken Inn. Note the Wiki entry under "See also" refers to Sambo's

More here. I have a small collection of racist ephemera, and a receipt from the Coon Chicken Inn is in there.

curtilingus's picture
:p@

Thanks for the info miss kitty. Looks like your sambo's is still open fast feat.

GOG's picture

They, whoever they are, didn't turn him into an Indian. The name was based on a children's story of a little Indian boy (yes he was called Little Black Sambo) being chased by a tiger around a tree. Tigers are only in Asia, not Africa, so it was never about an African.

in other news's picture

I remember Sambo's here in SoCal. I vaguely remember that the story had something to do with the butter melting into the shape of the tiger. It was so long ago, but I remember the pancakes.
I preferred Clifton's Cafeteria though. You could win a free toy if you were a kid. There was some method they had for a winner, which most kids won.

miss_kitty's picture

sambo getting chased by a tiger. He runs around a tree, and the tiger chases him. Sambo runs so fast and so long, the tiger turns to butter.

katy's picture

used to read that story as a kid, late 50s...
always thought it funny, never degrading... sambo was smart!
and so cute!

update/edit: went looking for the character i remember as "little black sambo" and THIS one is not from the story book i remember... still looking...

:33 maybe this golden book
hey, it's been a while...

On Watt Avenue, just off of I-80 . . .

We used to go there all the time when I was a kid, and I always got the pancakes with that big scoop of butter on top . . .

My parents told me about the racist history of the name when I was about ten, so we started going to Eppie's instead . . .

Dr. Acula's picture

As far as I know, "Sambos" is now DENNY'S.

katenh's picture

to hear the old canard every white friend of mine who I called on about their racists comments says to me, "You know I got nothing against black people, but don't you agree...there are two kinds..."

When I was young I used to feel pressured to play along, then as I got older I would try to gently steer them my way.

Now I just look at people like that, look at them blankly and say nothing, until they get uncomfortable, then I tell them, its racism, just plain f*** racism.

Just like this, expecting the herd to follow along.

One thing that's cool now is that its so public, people who normally just looked the other way are saying, "Hey! I don't think like that!"

Although, don't see it on that comment thread yet.

Can O Whoopass's picture

whites too. Dumb and dumber.

Glacial's picture

That doesn't seem very racist to me. I mean, he called W a monkey, not Obama. And pointing out that Obama's black isn't racist, it's a statement of fact. He IS black.

Unless people here think that there's something wrong with being black?

redsaunas's picture

Let's not get carried away with this stuff. Overly zealous PC police managed to make a laughing stock of the entire progressive movement in the 90s. Let's not allow that to happen again.

gonf's picture

Calling bush a monkey must be racist to the cretins on the rightwing.

Is it the 21st century yet?

You posted exactly what I was going to say.

AgentMacGyver's picture

Is pretty weak as racial slurs go. I've never heard it before. I remember in Higher Learning when the frat kid shouts into the phone "you black bitch!" I wondered if the script had been censored. It was racist, but didn't seem racist enough to start a campus war. If the characters' race had been reversed and the kid said "you white bitch" I doubt the frat would run down to the Af-Am house.

BUT...

when used on a white guy it's just derisive, an attack on the white guys intelligence and status as an evolved human.
When used on a black person it is HISTORICALLY racist.
That is the difference. There is a history of lynching, whites only drinking fountains and back of the bus attached to it when directed at those of African descent.

redsaunas's picture

Isn't that first comment referring to Bush? Y'know, the Chimp?

Ape-Man's picture

Bush ruined everything.

And the second part is, I believe, a reference to the Russian bear.

There is more than enough blatant racism to make Jimmy Carter's case. We don't have to scour anonymous blog posts for possible codewords.

Kalewaal and AFGHANVIEW are not American, they are Afghanistan citizens or residents., go look at their Youtube profiles.

Also note what he says about GWB before mentioning Obama.

And risking to be a total party pooper, what names did 90% of US citizens call OBL back in 2001 !? Remember Al Quaeda committed the 9/11 atrocity, not the obnoxious Taliban.

Ape-Man's picture

Yes, president Obama is talking to kids like an adult. Like all adults would if all adults could.

When you listen to them, it's as if the Republicans are talking to childish, maladjusted, middle aged and seniors.

Yea I was thinking the demographic there is around 12. VERY immature. I even heard some of them put a sexually-oriented avatar with every post.

Only a few such comments, but notice how many of them have been given a Thumbs Up from other viewers.

To be fair, Youtube comments are the lowest form of internet communication - below even 4chan. It's like dredging a sewer.

That said of course you're also right - Youtube commentary is that way precisely because these kind of people inhabit that place in droves.

can be decent; usually only real fans will seek out those clips anyway. Otherwise, I concur.

I'll put it to you this way:

Take all of Rick Santorum's most deviant fantasies, blend with a healthy helping a racism and stupidity; and put it on the internet.

This is also the *least* offensive way I can think of describing it.

Is it not true that we liberals often referred to George W. Bush as a chimpanzee? Isn't there a liberal blog called http://smirkingchimp.com/ in dishonor of the worst president in history?

Now I agree that calling a black president (or any black person) a monkey is racist, but people who live in glass houses should't throw stones. And we've been calling W a chimp for years.

katenh's picture

actually resembled a chimp in his facial features and expression and the reference was purely about his impish attitude.

Even if Obama looked completely like a chimp I don't think that our predominantly white-run society has any business tagging a characterization that has been used as a weapon of oppression and propaganda against non-caucasion people for the last oh, three hundred years.

That's why its different.

Taarak's picture

True. There's a difference between a political caricature and a racial stereotype. Those defending the monkey moniker for Obama seem to be hiding racial overtones behind the mask of caricature. It's not working.

thepoetryman's picture

But "liberals" did it to Bush therefore it's noble for a conservative to do so in return, despite the obvious.

Oh. Wait. I forgot, recognizing the obvious is not a conservative's strong-point.

virtually ANY YouTube video comments thread has incredibly stupid and often racist comments... you can post a video of your cat and get racist comments.

YouTube comments threads are a stupid magnet.

I've notice that too and it pisses me off.

It can be a classic oldie like Buddie Holly and you have commenters screetching at each other.

If you put something like Beatles into a Google search, often on the list of possible options is some nasty comment from a Youtuber.

And it seems like you can enter anything, even Marx Brothers, and suggested videos to go to are for the Jonas Brothers.

complete with the picture of the kid and the tiger. I live in Sacramento and there were several of them in the 60's as I recall and then it changed to Sambos and eventually Denny's which has historically been a racist franchise.

yes, there is truth to your post, but bush looks like a monkey regardless of color. Obama does not.

I have been a reader here for a while and this is the first time I have felt the need to say someting. I generally agree with most of the toppics and comments..BUT, this is rediculous! I don't see the racism in those comments and this is coming from a bi-racial (half mexican and white) and a mother of a bi-racial son (half me and half black). Calling Obama a black bear is nowhere near as insulting as refering to bush as the chimp he is. Many acient peoples and native americans had names that reffered to them as animals and having the almost supernatural like aminal qualities. Many clans had names like the BEAR clan, the turtle clan and so on. The fear of being grouped in with animals or even being related to them plays a HUGE part in this as well. What is so bad about being called a black bear? There is nothing wrong about being a bear or being black. I'd much rather have a black bear for prez than a shit flinging chimp. Not that I think chimps are bad, but they do throw shit. lol And that is all bush threw at us for 8 long years. Now, I am ready to see just how stuburn, strong willed and forceful our "black bear" of a president can be to get stuff done. Actually I would prefer him to be more like a grizzly when it comes to doing what he needs to do for the people.

And I have heard a lot of African Americans complain about the feeling of being talked down to by Obama. I understand how they feel. We havent had a president this intelligent in a long time and any time you talk to highly intelligent educated people it tends to feel like your being talked down to. At least he doesn't talk to us like we are all a bunch of idiots who can't see he doesn't have any clothes on. ;)

I think it would be best to throw this toppic out, it will only make it look like the progressives are race baiting and in the end.. isn't that exactly what this is? Come on you can do better than that.

the example isn't as demonstrative as the comments on this YouTube video regarding the beating on the school bus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtKem77rQ7k

Reading these comments, it's clear that racisim is not only alive and well, it's tolerated by the mainstream.

I don't know why you're making a fuss about those comments.

Have you seen the number and type of rank, racist comments on the WHITE HOUSE YOUTUBE CHANNEL?

Just take a look at any of President Obama's WEEKLY ADDRESSES on the White House youtube channel, and you'll see literally hundreds of comments like that.

linny's picture

After reading the alarmingly violent racists comments from viewers regarding the bus beating, I'm done with this site. Some of the posts came right out and advocated lynching people and were recommended by other posters. YouTube sure as hell didn't step in on that one. YouTube is a breeding ground for knuckledraggers when it comes to discussing political issues. I'm not surprised that C&L was able to find racists remarks on this site.
