Republican relatives and acquaintances - even those who think of themselves as moderates - have taken to using the rhetoric of the early 20th century. Some claim it's retaliation for attacks on McCain, others are simply voicing what has just been below the surface.
To my wife's dismay, I answer her sister's phone calls with single syllable answers. I told a former student, a man now in his forties, that he knew better. He has not responded.
I fear the polarization will deepen with the likes of Savage, O'Reilly, Hannity, and Coulter adding gasoline to the fire.
