Police called in to NY-23 polling stations because of voter intimidation by teabaggers!
By John Amato Tuesday Nov 03, 2009 10:00amThe teabaggers are turning to threats and intimidation out there in NY-23 land.
Elizabeth Benjamin writes in the NY Daily News:
It's getting ugly out there.
I just got off the phone with former state Democratic Chairwoman June O'Neill, who informed me the police had been called to at least two polling sites in St. Lawrence County due to overzealous electioneering (O'Neill called it "voter intimidation") by Doug Hoffman supporters.
"We've gotten reports that people are standing there, covered with Hoffman stickers and yelling anti-choice stuff at voters," said O'Neill, a St. Lawrence native who has been running the party's GOTV effort for Bill Owens in NY-23.
"Apparently, there's some woman claiming to be a commissioner," O'Neill continued. "Commissioner of what, I don't know. She's from Texas, I think, and she won't leave."
"This is not the way we roll in the North Country."'
O'Neill also said she had received anecdotal reports of problems at polling sites in Gouverneur, which is Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava's hometown. But she couldn't immediately confirm this.
I called over to the St. Lawrence Board of Elections and got GOP Elections Commissioner Debbie Pahler on the line. She confirmed that the police indeed had been called, but she downplayed the incident, saying it's "a routine procedure here in the county."
"We had electioneering within the 100-foot polling marker," Phaler said. "It's my understanding that they were asked to leave and wouldn't leave."
"If people are electioneering within the marker and don't stop when we ask them to, our inspectors are instructed to call law enforcement to assist them. I don't think anybody was arrested."
O'Neill also said she had received anecdotal reports of problems at polling sites in Gouverneur, which is Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava's hometown. But she couldn't immediately confirm this.
The Glenn Beck crowd are out there yelling anti-choice crap. They will bring the same anger and hatred they brought to the town halls that they disrupted. This is going to put a lot of stress on local police forces.
This is just the beginning. Gee, I wonder if Fox News will cover this voter intimidation and try to make a national story out of it. OK, I was joking. I hope the local media up in NY-23 get plenty of video of this. If any of our readers has video, please email us: crooksandliars-at-gmail.com

strategy..........no "moderates" allowed they might sound like/similiar to democrats
please explain...
He can't - he's a talkin points copying troll. He looks at what he's told to "write" without comprehension or thought. He's......thoughtless.
Did they bring their guns this time to water the tree of liberty?
would I be responsible for clean-up costs?
a) That Owens wins
and
b) He publicly thanks Sarah Palin, for helping overturn a century-and-a-half Republican monopoly on the seat.
That's my hope. If he loses, it's just the status quo for that district.
If the police have to unwind from the stress of dealing with the republican's Sturmabteilung, might I suggest a nice warm tea of catnip with hops, rosehips and passion flowers
And shit loads of gin?
I'd have brought some of my best gals (and guys?) up to that district.
was John Sweeney's
districtterritory. He still lives up there, and is it a coincidence that the Florida recount scenario is being replayed? Real people in upstate NY do not act this way. The storm troopers have to be imports, probably brought there at the behest of Sweeney. He obviously, to me at least, is still an operative.John Sweeney's district was NY-20. I know because I live in NY-20. Happily voted him out several years ago. Not saying he didn't have a hand in this, but NY-23 isn't his district.
to territory. Upstate certainly is his territory. Also, see my posts below. All I can say is,"Oops!"
Also, aren't you the Christina Gleason, founder of Phenomenal Content? Isn't that an internet marketing company? You have not been hired by Mr. Sweeney, have you? I noticed that you've been here for a little over an hour.
Bite me.
I do own Phenomenal Content, and I work with a lot of Internet Marketers, but no one hires me to write comments anywhere. I am no fan of John Sweeney. I am a registered democrat, and I could never put my name on something I don't believe in. No, I don't believe there is any amount of money John Sweeney could pay me to be his advocate!
I followed the link to this post from Twitter and had to register in order to make a comment. :-)
I can see 2010 now - teabaggers traveling cross-country, strapping on side-arms and harassing voters . . what could possibly go wrong?
Maybe we should double the money for predator drones in the next defense budget and keep them flying over the redstates.
I'm not cool with that.
I live about six or seven blocks of the polling place in my district, and my daughters' school is about five or six blocks another direction from the site.
(But I know you're not serious. However, that kind of situation has me sympathetic to the peoples of Afghanistan and Pakistan who are targeted by drones and innocents are killed in the process.)
I think many if not all of the teabaggers need a mental health evaluation.
How crazy does one have to be before they have to be checked for the safety of others?
Seriously.
Saint Raygun's cost cutting measures that lead to the dismantling of the mental healthcare system in the US, by letting the loons be in charge of the asylum.
Raygun's rule in California, I agree.
.
"How crazy does one have to be before they have to be checked for safety of others?"
2:05 mark, she's not crazy!

"How crazy does one have to be before they have to be checked for safety of others?"
Glen Beck is considered a journalist.
"Commissioner of what, I don't know. She's from Texas, I think, and she won't leave."
It would be funny on SNL - just scary in real life.
republican / wingnut behavior.
The reason there is a 100-yard zone free of electioneering, is because this has happened before. A lot. Liquor sales are suspended for Election Day in many places, for the same reason.
I can recall countless instances in which Dems have gone around, gun in hand, protesting on election day with the sole purpose of intimidating potential voters.
My point is, that I don't think of any recent example of a similar brazen attempt at voter intimidation by a national party, in such a complete crystal-clear and shameless manner.
Tyler Durden:
"Countless?" I've never heard of even one. Can you please point me to a few countless articles?
.
saying that Democrats show up to political events armed too. Which they don't, of course.
necessarily.
In CA, there was no evidence of sloganeering anywhere near the polling place. In FL, during the Presidential election, people were passing out campain materials to people standing in line to vote.
right?
their surrogates can still pass out flyers, etc.
...that's unamerican! I've got my Spaten Optimator!
People were flown in from Texas to disprupt the recount in 2000 and it worked! Of course tea party protesters were flown into NY to intimidate, it's what they do. This is only the beginning!
No one saw the Bush Coup coming. NASDAQ was to exciting to pay attention to other things.
run the show there in 2000. He is a convicted and known drunk and bully. Apparently, he has found employment since Gillibrand unseated him, working for the conservatives. Or doing the same in his home territory is a job interview.
lots of it. Ideas: None.
Gotta love those teabaggers/wingnuts/puppets of the Republicans.
...by denying other citizens of theirs.
You know, they can tell people not to get abortions and not to be gay. I think they have control issues.
... it seems like a boatload of insecurity issues can be added to their psychological train wreck of a profile.
I just know what you should be doing."
"God, please grant others the wisdom to let me control them"
day
will be the teabager's Waterloo. Where's Glenn Beck when you need him?
We are all afghans now?

is gonna need a free speech zone, oh wait, Bush is out now
or just yapping rethug talking points at people walking by on the street who aren't even voting?
Are the police telling people to not hassle the teabaggers or risk arrest? Duhhhhhhh
Police forcefully preventing honest murkins from their god given right to free speech. It's clear and present danger of a socialist take over ... a constitutional crisis at the very least. This could be good for days.
people with a lot of melanin, would they cover it then?
only as a riot and an example of the lawlessness and general bad behavior of liberals and democrats
and there was no mention of the problem in NY-23. I am going to see which channels mention it. Almost 5:00 here, which is when the news starts.
Five local channels and no one led with it. So far, I have not caught any of them even mentioning it, but I could have missed it going back and forth between 5 channels.
I'm not surprised at all that the teabag goons are causing problems at the polls. I wonder when any of the right wing talkers will be foaming at the mouth about American citizens being harassed while trying to exercise their right to vote? *crickets* Oh, wait I forgot, they only care about "real Americans".
they will be called far left liberal looney protesters.
... they will call them "patriotic Americans doing their duty defending honest American polls from the votes of far left angry liberal extremists"
..like Scozzafava?
is "far left" to FOX "news" and their audience.
Tyler Durden:
"Defending honest American polls from the votes..."
What does that actually mean? Sounds like you are saying, "stopping liberals from voting..."
I have not heard of "angry" progressives carrying guns to vote, or making a fuss at a Town Hall so the real facts can't be heard or even discussed...
Are you one of those guys who just never figured out how to "make friends and influence people..." who just hangs around the threads of people you disagree with so you can feel warm and fuzzy and get attention? Or are you just kinda Logic/Reason Challenged? Or maybe a gun-totin' 12 year old with Delusions of Relevance?
Of course you could be one of those guys who just gets paid a quarter for ever nonlinear post you can muster.
... but I think he was probably just being snarky.
Don't these frigging people have jobs?
Who needs a job when corporations pour millions into groups that sponsor these assholes.
You don't try to negotiate with these assholes. Corporatists have only known one thing over the course of history. Strikes and crackin' skulls. That's how work union's started in this country. That is how REAL freedom is won.
We went from the low classes fighting for their interests against the elites a century ago... to the low class fighting for the interests of the elites against their own.
THAT is the legacy of that wrinkled up old bastard Reagan.
I celebrate his death and mourn his legacy.
.
It's scary that so many CEOs and Republicans LIVE by that quote.
Antebellum South: Herrenvolk Democracy. You're poor? It doesn't matter, you're superior because you're white. So join with me, the rich plantation owner in voting for my economic interests...
1890s Georgia: what does the Democratic Party do down there? Turn the poor whites against the sharecroppers through virulent racism...after Tom Watson spent time and energy uniting them. Ironically he would use the very same racist tactics he tried to fight.
Fast forward to today...Astroturf groups posing as grassroots organizations manipulating the sheep...it never changes.
.
I love mocking Republicans on Yahoo's Answers in elections. This is not good news for the Hoffman supports. Letting your crazies be seen outside of the voting booth is just going to kill Hoffman's chances.
Which is a great thing!!! LOL
GO PALIN SUPPORTS!!!!
I'm not at all comfortable with the idea of encouraging the fringe right,in the belief that they will eventually bring down the entire GOP in flames.Rather, these nuts are making me very nervous.
In the short term they may well cause problems for the right, but in the long run?I'm not so sure.I remember a time when Limbaugh was openly mocked and scoffed at under the mistaken belief that he was a flash in the pan nut case. Now?Look at the audience that fat fuck enjoys.
I wonder if the idiot holding the "moran" sign is there?
another sign that says POLITIANS.
and I see this growing by the time 2010 and 2012 election days roll around. Wingnut lawyers will make sure to file legal claims to make sure there will be as clear a road as possible to this intimidation and illegal behavior. The wingnut talking blow holes will be all over the airwaves claiming that to stop this will be unconstitutional and anti freedom of speech. Wingnuts no longer are gaming the system, they are distroying it bit by bit.
Seriously, people need to get involved in their local politics. Democracy is not an spectator's sport.
I see this as an opportunity, what does not kill you... makes you stronger. And honestly, if this is played correctly, this could only lead to an expected outcome: the self implosion of the Republican party. That of course, involves the Dems not being a bunch of f*cking morons and refrain themselves from throwing a life line to these a**holes. But you can always count on the Dems screwing that too. That is why I said that people need to get involved at all levels (starting at the local level) to prevent that from happening.
I would like to see a future, in which the GOP becomes what they should have always been: a irrelevant party, representing the lunatic conservative fringe. With the Dems as the center-right status quo party, and a strong liberal party on the left.
the Fed will bail out the Republican party.
They certainly bailed out their Wallstreet branch.
under their belts.
Their master ego, glen beck, will be coaching them and egging them on.
These crazed, dangerous people are just getting started.
How to stop them?
That's what I'm afraid of - Hoffman wins and the wingnuts will be embolden to unleash the crazy times 10. This will the the tip of the iceberg. This situtation is kind of similar to the Van Jones witch hunt, once they got one, they will go for another and another.
Arrests. Hopefully before someone else gets hurt or killed.
"This is not the way we roll in the North Country."
Tis true. I live just outside the district (but within the media market to be bombarded with all the ridiculous ads), and the people may be conservative, but they're not insane for politics (like Texans). They had to bus the people in here, because the local people don't have the time, money, or energy to stand outside pollstations spouting shit.
In my opinion, neither candidate should win. I wish every voter would boycott the election. Both candidates are the same, and if you were bombarded with all the nonsense on the political ads, you would think the same.
Politicians want power for themselves. That's it. If it takes pretending to be an ultra-right, moron, then so be it, that's what people will do. It doesn't really matter who wins, life will go on in Upstate NY, and the "representative" will ignore the area as everyone else has.
for the shenanigans of the fringe right?
No, more like both parties are equally useless up here, completely regardless of the tea-bagger lunacy currently going on. I live right in the midst of all this stuff and, really, nothing changes politically around here no matter the results of any local election. At best, we're a very, very small stepping stone for someone moving on to something else, like happened with McHugh.
I know that I should be hoping for an extra Democrat to take the seat for Congress, and I do like Owens's positions on various issues, but it's so hard to see that election as reflecting anything upon this area. Heck, it's hard to see anything above the governor level reflecting anything upon the area; aside from how it's now harder to cross over to Canada, we're like some big blind spot for even state politicians. It's hard to be noticeable when you're in the same state as New York City and people think that Albany or Buffalo are the limits of "upstate."
No speed limit. Yeehaa!
.
has never worked, only the wacko's are elected then. You can tell in the South by turnout levels.
watching, is it?
...is in a spiral deathdive, which thrills ME to death.
on election eve watching McCain's concession.
Pass the popcorn
Class from McCain. Hatred and ignorance from his supporters.
stickers plastered all over themselves, I'd be inclined to vote for the Democrat out of spite...
A lot of conservative voters in upstate New York aren't going to take kindly to crazy Texans screaming out in front of their polling places and will quite likely decide to vote Owens as they're walking in the door.
After Scozzafava pulled out, Hoffman took the lead. Not a very big lead....
Perspective: The district has not elected a Democrat to Congress for 70 election cycles. All Republicans.
but they don't like outsiders coming in and telling them what to do much either there. So I think it could be an upset.
they no longer have a 'Pub on the ballot. Hoffman is listed as an Independent, is he not?
Not an independent, but as far as party support goes (at least from his own party), practically.
You can be provided video, audio, pictures and affidavits of the liberal left perpetrating all manner of voter fraud and intimidation, including armed Black Panther thugs in front of a polling station during the presidential election, and it doesn’t phase you in the least. Oh, I’m sure someone on the left, somewhere, is disturbed by the ongoing and undeniably well-documented election tampering by the likes of ACORN, etc…, but I’ve yet to see any of them take a stand against it.
Today there’s an unsubstantiated report of some police activity in NY-23 possibly related to the actions of some Hoffman supporters, and the left is all up in arms.
How can that type of hypocrisy be justified?
[Deleted. Off topic flamebaiting-Sitemonitor]
Back on point - this bastardization of the election process is bad for all Americans, regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on. We either get together on that idea or we continue our slide into….into whatever this is we’re becoming.
-Cnation
If you hadn't simply regurgitated a bunch of already-debunked right-wing fairy tales. I happen to know about the "Black Panther thugs" - the incident happened in North Philadelphia, near where I live. Guess what? One of the Big Scary Black Men was a certified poll watcher, and the Obama volunteer on the scene said nothing happened.
right-wing fairy tales
These rumors were floated by Mitch McConnell?
Glenn Beck talking points! ;)
Yours is an ideology which has proven itself, on any level, incapable of accomplishing anything other than massive transfers of wealth and power to the most wealthy and powerful.
Those interests have certainly moved to the Democratic Party. Why? Because conservatism has wrecked the Republican Party just as it did the Federalists and the Whigs. Conservatism is indeed nothing more than an attempt to find an acceptable intellectual cover for greed. It's few remaining adherents (aside from the very, very few who actually benefit from it's principles), are nothing more than the most uneducated, ignorant, superstitious, and fearful among us.
They are, predictably, found mostly in the poorest and most illiterate areas of the country. They have been soundly defeated in successive elections and are, politically, as impotent as Rush Limbaugh is, literally, when away from his medicine cabinet.
Why would we want to "get together" with such an losing ideology on anything?
Very well said!
fiver:
Ouch!
Thanx! Best comment today!!!
I'm not sure about the term "ideology" though. Wouldn't that constitute an architecture of thought? Maybe some salience of organization?
For instance: Is it an Ideology for the Tea Bagging fools to say that Health Care should not be Government-Run because Government always messes everything up... and then in the same breath say that it's unfair competition for the Mega Insurance Mafia?
If the Government only messes things up, then it would be shown fairly quickly to be bad at managing Health Care and the Faux Free Market Free Enterprise Greedy Bastard Health Insurance Racketeers would show their supposed superiority.
and literate, yours is one of the most ridiculous hit and run posts we've seen here for some time. The fact that you would equate The Black Panthers to ACORN and SEIU and expect to be taken remotely serious says all we need to know about you and your FOX News world view.
Next time, hang around for awhile and try to learn something...I don't know? "Factual"?Having to do with "reality"?
The worst part is that you only registered just to spew a bunch of nonsense that was proven to be false a long time ago.
How can that type of hypocrisy be justified?
Provide please.
The teabaggers are as much brutes as they are simpletons. Bunch of Neanderthals, the whole lot of em!
To the C & Lers of NY-23, good luck on your way to the polling stations. Be careful, and if you can, document or report any incidents of these people getting out of hand!
The fact these clowns are allowed to run around making asses of themselves pretty thoroughly debunks that whole "concentration camp for conservatives" meme.
Which is kind of a shame.
I live in the 23rd and just voted with my sister. She mentioned that at the local school--where she works--2 high school girls were standing in front of the school holding Hoffman signs. We drove by and they were there but a good 500 feet from the school. Our polling place was Hoffman free as were the 2 other places we drove by. I know June O'Neil (mentioned in the story) and I'm sure there are over-zealous Hoffman supporters but my guess is that they are more in the smaller villages in the area. We don't like outsiders telling us what to do in the North Country, however, there are a lot of yokels here who think we are south of the Mason-Dixon line at the start of the Civil War.
Mercifully, the town I live in trends heavily democrat.
If I hear of any bouts of tea bag frenzy, I'll post.
Here come the brownshirts ...
Not a word in the MSM tonight. And I'd be very surprised if there ever was. We mustn't risk offending the beckerheads and get labelled commie pinko liberal fascists (whatever that means).
Is Grayson the only one with a microphone AND the guts to say the emporer has no clothes?
The voting machines used in NY-23 today have not been certified by the state. They are new, and the company that makes them, Sequoia Voting Systems, is owned by a Venezuelan company. They were used in the Chavez fiasco, when it was predicted that he would lose by a huge margin, and, guess what, he didn't.
Go here: http://www.votetrustusa.org/index.php?option=...
They may be the same as used in Venezuela but there are marked paper ballots so a recount should be easy. notice I said should be easy. After all the money wasted in Minn. that could have been used to help people it just goes to show where the republican and conservative party is.
During the 1968 anti-war and Democratic Convention demonstrators, the Repukes said the police should shoot the demonstrators down. Well, now is your chance, Republican bastards: order the police to shoot the teabaggers.
Let's hope the ignorant and uneducated teabaggers go after every Reslug running for office with their own knuckle dragging, mentally unstable candidate. Dem's will win BIG!!
