(Here's video of Shelby being called out about his lack of ethics during the Auto rescue Plan by Carl Levin with Chris Wallace.)

Sen. Richard Shelby does his part to block all things Obama:

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) has put an extraordinary "blanket hold" on at least 70 nominations President Obama has sent to the Senate, according to multiple reports this evening. The hold means no nominations can move forward unless Senate Democrats can secure a 60-member cloture vote to break it, or until Shelby lifts the hold.

"While holds are frequent," CongressDaily's Dan Friedman and Megan Scully report (sub. req.), "Senate aides said a blanket hold represents a far more aggressive use of the power than is normal." The magazine reported aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were the source of the news about Shelby's blanket hold.

Ms. McConnell didn't even know what Shelby was doing, but much of this is based on blocking business for Boeing. It's all about giving the business to a foreign corporation.

He just loves Airbus:

The key issue is that Shelby wants the Air Force to tweak an RFP for refueling tankers so that Airbus (partnered with Northrup Grumman) would win the bid again over Boeing. The contract had been awarded in 2008, but the GAO found that the Air Force had erred in calculating the award. After the Air Force wrote a new RFP in preparation to rebid the contract, Airbus calculated that it would not win the new bid, and started complaining. Now, Airbus is threatening to withdraw from the competition unless the specs in the RFP are revised.

If you remember, back in 2002, Shelby was the one who allegedly leaked NSA intercepts to Carl Cameron of FOX News and the media and then refused to take a lie detector test about it right after 9/11.

"A sharp disagreement ensued between the FBI and senior Justice Department officials overseeing the case, according to federal law enforcement officials. The FBI was convinced not only that Shelby leaked the information regarding the intercepts, but also that the senator might have misled the FBI when he was interviewed about his actions, according to sources. They advocated that Shelby be prosecuted." Read the whole article. Pat Roberts helps ruin the investigation.

He got off because Pat Roberts screwed up the investigation like he usually does. And he's the one on TV the most trying to force the auto industry to go belly up.

And we can't forget that he acted like Herbert Hoover during the Auto crisis by using a "filibuster."

CREDO has a petition going that says:

It's time for Democratic leadership to stand up to Republicans, starting with Sen. Shelby. Senate Majority Leader Reid should refuse to honor Shelby's "blanket hold" on more than 70 nominees. If Republicans want to block every single Obama appointee, they must filibuster them one-by-one and deal with the very public consequences of their obstructionism. Sen. Shelby should be ashamed -- but he is not.

Sign up if you can.

Shelby, the consumate corporate scumbag.

miss_kitty's picture

If he'd be having a little stiffie fit over them...maybe he hates Democratic female senators.

The reason he is not ashamed is because he has no manners or class, a couple things money can't buy.

A$$ to the nation..Am convinced that the fact that filibusters were at one time 8 per session and are now 80 is an indication of the level of funk the congress has sunk to,,,Stupid --the tea party is 600 strong...why is the press reporting on it more than what is happening?

maximus7's picture

Please answer this poll on the filibuster.

http://apps.facebook.com/opinionpolls/poll.ph...

so they love having the "filibuster" excuse for getting nothing done. When they get their ass kicked out of office, no problem, there's a job with lots of perks waiting on K street.

Republicans are liars and simply cannot be trusted.

There are likely no jobs with perqs on K street for former lawmakers who have demonstrated their inability to get the job done while they hold the reins of power.

a person without a soul or conscience cannot feel shame.

Good Lord, he is the poster child for obstructionism; if the Democrats don't make an example of him as the party of no in 2010, they deserve to lose.

That's all I could come up with.

Democracy is too important to be entrusted to politicians.
Rise Up!
Protest!

The Republican will never learn. The Republican is set in stone. the Republican's fate is sealed.

BTW

how is it a guy from a state w/ 4.5 million people, which recently dropped 2 points to 45th in the nation in education (another state that thanks god for MS) and 9 electoral votes which went to the loser of the last election, from the minority party wield so much power? He is stopping the business of the nation. This one pissant. What a disgrace to his family, his state, his office, the human race.

... while the Democrats couldn't (or wouldn't) even slow down the right wing agenda for the past decade.

Telecom immunity must have different rules ....

Corruption favors the wealthy.

As it does about Richard Shelby. Would Lott have honored such a blanket hold? Would Frist? Even if they honored it can there be any doubt that they wouldn't have been in front of cameras every. single. day. denouncing the tactic? I don't want to see the Democrat's majority whittled away because I know the alternative is much worse but I won't be sorry to see the last of Harry Reid. Maybe IF the Democrats hang onto the majority in the Senate and I believe they will, maybe they will elect a majority leader that will LEAD, rather than cower. Ever read Larry Niven? Harry Reid is the perfect example of the Hindmost. He who leads from the rear can seemingly do nothing but roll into a ball when confronted with leadership responsibility.

Barack Obama: Change we can only imagine

the leadership in the house and senate is weak

they need to go

This is a matter for the prosecutors to handle. It's called bribery. If we're worried about outcries over partisan prosecution if the Obama DoJ handles the investigation, fine, let's go with a special prosecutor. Put this man in jail. It's the only way to make sure that holds, if we are to continue to have them, are used properly, and not to benefit a corporation that has given things of value to Senator Shelby.

But everyone knows that that takes nerves. And Harry Reid is not exactly known for his level of courage.

One more thing:

"CREDO has a petition going that says:"

I went there to sign the petition, but one item of information that they demand is one's street address. NO ONE gets MY address UNLESS I want to give it to them. NO ONE needs to knows anyone else's street address; the ZIP code is enough. I closed that page and got out of there.

photon_s feather's picture

anyone can get your street address - unless you have nothing in your name at that address. Got a phone? Electricity? Gas? Property taxes? School loan? Did you live at that address while attending college?

Given the dems spinelessness, I'd go super balls to the wall arrogant too. Its kinda like a kid acting out against a soft parent.

Hell if I were the repubs, I'd try to claim we have a majority and start naming committee assignments. Probably get away with it.

Kreskin's picture

It's time for the Dem leadership to stand up ? Hell , they may as well join the Repugnant party and make it official . Ah but Barack has finally had enough , he's going to charm them into being fair and honest and have a bipartisan super bowl party ! You know after the Dems won control and Obama got the White House, I thought at last the insanity will subside , but incredibly it's only gotten worse . Oh well , at least Obama has mastered the English language , I guess that's an improvement .I'm beginning to wonder , are the Dems and Obama actually afraid of the Repugs ?

"According to the report, Shelby is holding Obama's nominees hostage until a pair of lucrative programs that would send billions in taxpayer dollars to his home state get back on track."

Besides doing the footwork for a foreign corporation (one that will soon be funneling millions and millions of $$$$ to his next campaign or maybe funneling millions of $$ to his opponent if he does not play along?) is this like a pork barrel earmark??? (Does John McCan't know about this?) Wasn't Shelby shilling for Toyota, another foreign corporation? Why does Shelby hate America?????

From the same article:

"- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office first doubted the story was true. Later, after Shelby confirmed it, McConnell's office refused to talk about the holds."

I wonder why McConnell would doubt that the story was true and then wouldn't talk about it??

NoBuddy's picture

As the renowned liberal, Pat Buchanan pointed out, McCain's principle foreign policy adviser was a lobbyist hired by the country of Georgia. A little more recently, McCain himself accepted an invitation to Georgia to accept the "Hero of Georgia Order".

That's the first time (outside of Israel) that I've heard of our military alliances being for sale to lobbyists. (Lobbyists being people who pay bribes, kinda like enhanced interrogators being people formerly called torturers).

The situation is spinning out of control. Baucus is surrounded by Wellpoint advisers as he authors a health bill. Obama's largest corporate donors was from the financial sector, and there is no white collar crime prosecutions to the activities relating to the financial meltdown, especially the characterization of the mortgage backed securities as AAA?

Unfortunately, I think we're in a brave new world, a world spinning perilously towards a new 4th Reich, a multi-national corporate controlled Reich. I think the next Republican control of the government will seal the deal, and if Massachusetts is any indication, the voters don't think particularly deeply before casting their vote.

and move the contract out of that damned 'Right to Work' State and move it to a real State with a decent prevailing wage law.

Tax the Rich's picture

Bwahahahahahaha............"right to work"......

Another Orwellean bullshit term the repuke corporate nazi's have come up with to brainwash the chronically stupid.

It should really be called the "right to work for nothing and no benefits" law!

Thirty years of this blatant bullshit - heaped on top of mountains of massive lies; and 45% of this country still can not connect the dots! Wow!

It is obvious to anyone with two I.Q. points to rub together, that the GOP are anti-american scumbags, whose only purpose is to transfer every single penny of wealth in this country to the richest 2%.

We may have the numbers, but the oligarch's know that almost half of those numbers are dumber than a bag of rocks! It must be amusing to sit in your exclusive country club - drinking $700 glasses of brandy, and watch the idiot tea baggers protest in support of YOUR fascist policies which have screwed them royally, while they denounce and hate the very people that could actually make their lives better; much much better.

I wonder if the extremely evil ones - like Murdoch and Ailes, make bets on how badly they can f**k the tea baggers, and still have them marching in the streets on their behalf? What a hoot it must be, to be a fascist elite in the U.S. today!

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

bmolloy124's picture

I couldn't agree more. I try to be careful not to use words like "evil" though I hear those words applied in conjunction with "Liberal" every time I turn on talk radio. I hate to sink as low as that. However, your point regarding how the Tea Baggers are lackeys (another word choice I should regret!) for folks who drink $700.00 bottles of scotch at Country Clubs--- people like Ailes and Murdoch who must be laughing all the way to the banks that wouldn't give a teabagging pick-up truck driving "keep your government hands off my medicare" sign waver a home loan but would sure like her or him to parade around saying Obama is a socialist and its their pocketbooks his agenda, via taxes, is using to "bail out" said banks-------your point is well taken.

I wonder if it isn't more than 45% who are unable to connect dots? One thing I would say on that note, however, is: are some of us "dumber than a bag of rocks" or is something else going on? I have immediate family members who listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Fox "News" regularly without question. Granted, one went no further in her education than to get an Associates Degree and the other graduated high school and married soon after... So, I'd call it ignorance rather than stupidity. The difference is important it seems to me. Ignorance is more a lack of knowledge or information whereas stupidity implies a difficulty comprehending and interpreting or making sense of information. If you don't have alternative information at your disposal and you have a situation where you get your information from corporate owned sources calling themselves "news" organizations, well...the cards are stacked against your connecting some --- most ---of the dots. Most people don't want to discover they've been--- or are being duped, too. It means they're gullible---suckers even. It's like people who stay in relationships that are abusive because it's too impossible to confront the reality that they've been --or are being-- exploited when they thought they were loved. And, maybe it's even simpler but sadder --- who wants to admit they've been had?

Anyways, liked your "input." Read my blogs at www.neonewspub.com

How is it exactly that the republicans hold any moral or honorable favor among the people?
Can someone name one moral or honorable thing any of these modern day republicans have done?
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!

Still no word from Senator McCain on this??

I'll check back later.

I'm just glad the media is jumping on this and exposing this guy for the obstructionist he is. It's unbelievable the Dems wouldn't stand up to this jerk. Hey, Dems, you control Congress, LEAD!

Blala formerly known as designguy's picture

I am so sick of hearing how it takes 60 votes to pass anything in the Senate.

If Harry Reid would grow a pair and stiffen his spine, he would tell the opposition, "If you want to filibuster, got for it." Doesn't he know there hasn't actually been a real one since 1968? Nothing but threats. WTF is Harry afraid of?

I say call their bluff! The scumbags would get real tired of reading the phone book real fast. Of course they would claim that Dems are halting the business of the Senate. But it would be obvious that it is they. More people might wake up to the fact of their pure obstructionism that is hurting this country.

Kreskin's picture

I agree that's where we are heading alright , blows my mind that people don't recognize what's going on , "it can't happen here ", I have bad news for them , it is happening . Is not the first time in history that fools , people who can't even think and reason their way out of a wet paper bag , against all logic and reason , have given themselves over to evil ones and put them in power , the rest can only watch in total amazement and fear . Right now it's as if the Dems are afraid of these guys or worse yet are with them .

Senator McCain? You hooo. What do you have to say about this? Probably the same thing LIEberman said about his bullshit flip flop on the medicare for everybody deal. Probably McCain will react the same way he did about the "Don't Ask Don' Tell" crap. I guess we will find out tomorrow, Sunday when he is on MTP or Fox News Sunday. They won't ask him though, will they?
