The usual pack of right wing race-baiters spread false racist charges about the St. Louis bus beating. UPDATED
You can always count on Michelle Malkin and Drudge to lie about an issue to try and turn the heat off of her racist friends. I just hope some people don't get hurt because of it. She wrote a story and as usual jumped the gun to make her point: A teachable moment: Racial thuggery in St. Louis;Updated.
People like Malkin are scanning the headlines now for something that will turn the racist light off of the teabaggers, but she can't even get this story straight. Where have you seen that before?
Here's what really happened.
A student on a Belleville West High School bus was beaten for his choice of seat, not because he was white, according to a witness and police.
"The incident appears now to be more about a couple of bullies on a bus dictating where people sit," said Belleville Police Capt. Don Sax, who originally said Monday's attack may have been racially motivated.
D'Vante Lott, 16, said he was on the bus and witnessed the attack by the two black students.
The victim walked onto the bus, looking for an open seat, but students kept turning him down, as D'Vante said happened often with this student.
But Monday, the victim apparently tired of asking for a seat, D'Vante said, moved one student's book-bag off a seat, and just sat down.
She finally updated her story hours later because you know she needs those links and trackbacks, but Sullivan was asking her to change it for a while. You'd figure that a story which she promoted as racially sensitive would be one that she would keep an eye on so that she got her facts right, no?
The Daily Dish says the story in St. Louis was updated with the truth before she even promoted her "racial thuggery" charge.
That is Michelle Malkin's categorical claim about the ugly incident on a school bus in Saint Louis this morning. She wrote that post at 12.02 pm, linking to this story which says it was updated at 11.35 am to rebut the notion that this schoolyard fight was racially motivated. The police chief rushed to judgment and later recanted. Maybe Malkin missed it and will soon qualify her claim.

Keep in mind that these are the same people who were just carrying signs calling Obama Hitler and saying that Acorn groups and his arrogant wife should be sent back to "their own" country and be stripped of their rights. I'd say those so-called thugs were the polite ones.
More seriously, these people are a perfect example of the modern racists. They don't go around calling black people "boy" (to their faces) and they certainly don't think of themselves as bigots. But in their minds, racial minorities are dangerous barbarians who are threatening to destroy their way of life. Hence, when they find themselves in a group of loud teenagers, they see it as a test of their own manhood to "put them down." (Of course, that's why they need all those guns.)
A black president is threatening to them, even if they don't really understand it, because while he is unquestionably a very accomplished individual in anyone's estimation, the loyalty he inspires among African Americans frightens them --- and his sometime feints to popular culture and black solidarity make them very, very uncomfortable. That's why this obsession with ACORN has such resonance. The black army is forming. We are living in a new world where racism is a minority position. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist or that it doesn't find political expression is some powerful ways. It behooves liberals to be vigilent about this and keep these impulses in check with frequent reminders that it is not acceptable in modern America to be a racist.
It's also obvious that nativism and immigration are the great racial undercurrent of the moment and they have long been the animating feature of toxic right wing populism. We ignore this stuff at our peril.
Racism is a minority position, but it's a lot bigger problem than one would think after all this time. A black president is too much to handle for many of them. We see it every day on our TVs. The racism being exhibited by the teabaggers is astounding to me, and the media are doing their best to not inform America about it, even as they show it. It's like watching an action movie, but the dialogue doesn't match the action. And I will never ignore this hatred. I never have and I never will.

And she's useful to white racists in exactly the same way that Michael Steele and Clarence Thomas are. "Even some black folks agree with us" - something that's only the slightest bit meaningful from a racist point of view.

Miss Samuels constantly quotes right wing talkers and also is an instigator of hatred and racism against Barack Obama.
This woman and racist should not be on the dial called Sirius Left 146 whatsover. Miss Samuels boasts day in and day out what she heard Mike Savage say just the night before on his show. She also likes to tell her liberal audience how she once worked with Rush Limbaugh and calls "Sean Hannity," Sean in a terms of endearment way.

Believing there is a racial component to this attack does not make you a crazy right winger. Everybody here seems ready to dismiss the racial aspect out of convenience. Of course, the kids on the bus aren't going to admit the attack was racially motivated.
I think there are two reason for this: one, they don't want to take the fat wind bags side and therefore take the opposite position by default and secondly they feel guilty about accusing black people of being
racist.
I still think, if the shoe was on the other foot and the attackers were white the tone here would be drastically different. I honestly don't know if it was racially motivated. But I am not willing to ring my hands like a lot of people here and say, well that's over.
Every other day people here are calling the right wingers racist. Of course they just so happen to be right. Limbaugh is exploiting the situation and many of the tea baggers are defiantly closeted neo nazis, I am not denying that at all. What I am saying is that it is not necessary to dismiss the charges of racism simply because fat ass took that position.
Part of what has the wingers panties in such a bunch is the idea that liberals think only white people are racists. And has much as it hurts me to admit it, they're right to a degree. You've only to look at how many on progressive blogs automatically assumed racism in the Gates arrest (even before details started to emerge about what all happened there), but are scrambling for excuses in this incident to see that at play. Yeah, Limbaugh is scum, and is using this to whip up a whirlwind of shit. What's new there? But that doesn't mean there wasn't some racial bias for two black kids beating up a white kid. You KNOW we'd be screaming bloody murder on this site if the ethnicity of the kids was reversed.

I grew up in Belleville, IL where the attack actually occurred (it's across the river from St. Louis). Belleville isn't exactly home to the widespread poverty and violence that characterizes a lot of its surrounding cities, but it's also not the safest place to attend high school.
In my four years at Belleville East, I saw countless fights. White kids beat up white kids, black kids beat up black kids, and everything in between. Those fights, despite being recorded on video and equal in severity, never made the news. I remember one time in particular when a homosexual male came to school in a dress and was violently beaten by a collection of students. Where was the outrage then? Where was the national coverage?
Watching that video is heartbreaking, and what happened to that kid was horrifying. It is not, however, some sign of a black, racist conspiracy. It is a sign that some kids in high school are concerned about looking like a punk in front of their friends. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of racism in America, and with a black president and a very motivated minority of conservative extremists who are hungry for any indication that African Americans are as violent and extreme as they like to believe.
People still send their children to that school? They must hate their kids.

Kids unfortunately can be bullies to each other. That's what it's looking like in Monday's situation.

It WAS a crime, pure and simple. Doesn't matter the color of the skin of the kids involved.
That being said, the right wing will exploit it to no end. Two days in a row Sean Hannity brought up on his radio show the bad behavior of Serena Williams and Kayne West. With no context, no point, no nothing except (in my mind) to throw out there a picture of black people behaving badly. If anyone here thinks the right are NOT a bunch of sick racists, you're wrong. They are.
How many times did Sean mention, in the same diatribe the bad behavior of Mel Gibson, Kramer or Don Imus? He did, but only to defend their behavior. The fact that Joe Wilson is now a right wing hero is very telling.

I can't help but believe that if two white kids beat a black kid, there would have been hate crime charges leveled. I live in St. Louis. I saw this story on our local NBC affiliate (KSDK) yesterday at NOON and the last line of the report was "The attack was NOT apparently racially-motivated."
