Going on Offense in Maine
Yesterday, the No on 1 campaign released this great new ad, featuring a Catholic mom who wants nothing more than for her gay son to have the same rights as everybody else.
It seems to have touched a nerve with the other side. A Catholic group is demanding that the ad be taken down, because:
“Everybody knows the Catholic Church is opposed to counterfeit marriages. The Church believes marriage is a natural institution, vindicated by common reason that serves both men and women, and the needs of children. The Church defends marriage as a civic institution believing marriage and family to be the fundamental unit of society,” explained Burch.
“For homosexual groups to suggest that the Catholic Church believes otherwise is disingenuous, dishonest, and an insult to the intelligence of Catholic voters in Maine,” said Burch.
We are on offense here in Maine, pushing back at the Catholic Church which has raised over $214k for Stand for Marriage Maine last quarter.
But the campaign needs your help to win this election, to be the first to protect marriage rights at the ballot box, to keep the momentum up that we have gained since Prop 8. And they need the resources to do it.
We are launching a "moneybomb" for Maine, with a big push to get as much cash in the door for No on 1 by Oct 15th, the last major financial filing deadline and the first day of early voting.
After that date money in the door just isn't as useful for the campaign. They need to figure out their budget for the last few weeks of the campaign.
Give now if you can on Blue America's ActBlue page. Maine is a cheap state. Here's a breakdown of what your donation will "buy".
$1,000 we can blanket the state with radio ads for 1 day
$800 pays for one field organizer for a week
$720 would fund 20 canvasses in key counties around the state on a Saturday
$550 pays for one channel of cable for a day
$420 pays for one much needed field organizer for a week
$330 is 2 radio commercials to beat back their lies
$210 pays for 70 $3/day cell phones to talk to targeted voters
$186 about the cost of 1 radio commercial
$137 will buy supplies for 4 door-to-door canvasses
$108 buys about 100 yard signs for visibility
$72 will pay for signage for visibility for one weekend on a targeted campus
$66 pays for about 20 $3/day cell phones to talk to targeted voters
$54 buys 50 yard signs for visibility
$36 will fund supplies for one door-to-door canvass
$24 buys 20 yard signs for visibility

Gee, you guys feel like someone is misrepresenting your worldview as part of a political campaign?
Gee, that...that must be irritating.
or torturing Jews, or converting slaves to christianity, or digging up Galileo's remains and burning them at the stake, or buggering some alterboys, or forcing rape victims to bear the child, or burning books, or shielding pedophile priests, or helping Hitler, or declaring that whales are fish, or excommunicating rape victims, or counting their money, or choosing some brocade for their new dress, or poking holes in prophylactics or something?
Just asking.

This doesn't affect your precious religion at all.
SO STFU.
... and I read the rent there is awful.
But there is plenty of space in Saudi Arabia, and I read Afghanistan is lovely this time of the year. Maybe we should send them travel brochures?
Clutch the rosary beads and say "Mecca Lecka hi, Mecca Hiney Ho!" God will save you from teh gay, unfortunately you still smell of pedophilia and thats just not good! Religion poisons everything!

I applaud the sentiment, but have a critique of the terminology.
Economical, fair, inexpensive, moderate, or reasonable, would be much better word choices than 'cheap'.
Unless you are only focused on those people from away.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
By your words and phrasing...homosexuals are perverts, not normal, and are kinky. Unless you're snarking...you're a real idiot and a bigot to boot.
I won't make a blanket statement against all catholics, but I must admit they have some problems within their church, so maybe they should clear those up before condemning others.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I was raised a Catholic, didn't go back to church much after 8th grade ended. Been married twice, first wife divorced, second died. Going to get married again to a marvelous woman who was raised Dutch Reformed then converted to Judaism, the upshot being neither of us are particularly religious (I'm actually closer to Sam Harris, but I digress)- but she's an only child and I come from a big anglo-italian family in upstate ny where I haven't lived for 30 years. But my family is still there, they're all catholic and we came to this idea- how about getting married in the church I grew up in? My sister got married there, my mom's funeral was there, and the church is actually closing around the time we were thinking, so there's this who element of "closure" and homecoming to it all...Well- you think the catholic church is welcoming me back? You would not fucking believe the OBSTACLES that these creeps have put in front of us. They are near-totally unreceptive. She's Jewish & divorced and I haven't been a practicing catholic, so....WTF? The catholic church is about authority, obedience, not questioning dogma. They could care less about marriage. Bullshit...
They seem to be about marriage, just by their rules and their rules only. I know there are good things done by catholic organizatons, nuns etc but like so many groups, the bad apples spoil it for the really good ones. And, that is a shame for all.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
like the corporations, the Catholic Church (and most other institutional religions these days) are all about the MONEY.
Got to keep all those guys in gowns and brocade and golden chalices, doncha' know.

"Maine is a cheap state" meaning you can come from wherever and throw money at us that live here so we'll vote the way you want us too? Up until the statement "Maine is a cheap state" I was going to vote for gay equality, now that I know that backers of this are from "away" and want to force this down our throats by spending cash on "cheap" signs and "cheap" cable tv and "cheap" radio spots, tell you what, keep your money, all you're going to do once this is out across our "cheap" state is piss Mainers off. Good job morons!!
you refuse to help out civil rights and equality for your fellow Americans because you feelings are hurt? Really not cool. And sort of moronic and asinine.
The word cheap in the article should be replace with inexpensive or something else as suggested above, but you need to chill, lest you be mistaken for a tea-bagger, because that's the kind of behavior you are imitating.
Look a$$clown, I'm a disabled American veteran, fought so you could say what ever you'd like to say but when you from "AWAY" try and change things no different than the repukelickans and lobbyists do, that's where I draw the line. It's all about getting what YOU want by throwing cash at the issue, it's got to be YOUR way. You could give a rat's butt about the people of Maine. I've got your teabagger, anytime fool, anytime!!
When you act like a big whiny crybaby....then expect to be called on it. Any the people of Maine already spoke about it, assclown. They voted for it. So you might want to take your whining and bedwetting elsewhere.
As for your service, thanks, but guess what...it doesn't mean shit in this conversation.
No you weren't fred. If you believed it was the right thing to do before, you'd still believe it now. You're just a cheap opportunist, using this as an excuse to give us faux outrage.
And believe me, money is coming in from out of state for the "Yes on 1" people as well. So are you just as upset at them as well?
"Yes on 1" people are under investigation in Maine.
Just saying.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
Thanks Michelle, it says it right in the article ...
The case pits two out-of-state interests against each other. The complaint filed by a California group charges that the National Organization for Marriage of Washington, D.C., failed to disclose the names of donors when it gave money to a Maine political action committee.
So fred, "Yes on 1" is being bankrolled by out of state interestes as well ... if you're being honest, you'll be outraged at them too. How are you gonna vote now? I figure I already know.
He seems to have forgotten the whole Utah moving in on California thing, as well as the fact that the good people of Maine voted FOR marriage equality and now a minority want to change that.
Last I heard Maine was part of the US and this is about rights for Americans.
but Maine is different. The whole 'from away' thing is still a big deal in some areas.
I was born and raised on the Mid-Coast, and when we moved to the County for a couple of years, I was referred to as "from away", and I am a 14th generation Maineiac.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
the same mentality as the South is with "Yankees".
And just as stupid.
It's lik eif you aren't personally related to General Robert E. Lee, you're a Yankee.
Never mind the fact that nobody here is from America, same the Native Amerinds. And even they came over from Asia.
Maybe they should say that the Catholic Church believes consensual sex is between a priest and a 13 year old alter boy.
is intended to be a factual statement
I have always contended that when someone calls them self a "Christian" or in this case "Catholic", they must own their history. All religions most especially "Christians" will admit that the history of their peculiar cult is awful but it is different now. The only difference I see is they are not as powerful now as they were in the past or they would still be murdering people who disagree in this country in public for all to see. If you want to believe in talking snakes, that is fine with me. When you want to turn what the snake says into public policy then I have to draw the line.
I completely agree with your last two sentences. Good stuff!
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
... Christians are specially good at pretending that when they f*ck up is just due to some "bad apples." When in reality, if they were to follow their religious doctrine regarding lying and truth, that would force them to be frank about the fact that there is a pattern of rotting in their orchard.
I am always amazed by the very selective approach of religious people. In the sense that religions tend to consider one good apple among thousands to be the "norm" where as the thousands of rotten apples in between the few good ones are discarded as the "exception."
Religion has outlived its initial usefulness as an evolutionary mechanism, and now it is one of the main impediments to continue such evolutionary adventure. We may be one of the first species to experience devolution if we keep it up at this pace. Ugh.
We just don't want parents of our alter boys insisting we marry them after we molest them!

How is this any different from william donohue; he acts like an official of the Church, but who the hell is he exactly?
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
To a fundamentalist catholic, if one truly does exist, it is sinful for two people of this earth who love each other to marry if they are of the same sex. However, it is most pious for a woman to marry a supreme being not of this earth and devote her body and soul to his everlasting service. Go figure.
if God is a woman?
if God is a lesbian, or a gay man, or asexual, or transexual, or not anthropomorphic. What if a clan in the jungles of Papua New Guinea is correct and God is a spirit living in a rock? What if it's not necessary to hate and fear all who are different from you.
Oooooooo noooooooo, Mr. Bill.

1 Corinthians 7:8-9 (King James Version)
8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I.
9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
... if your a catholic priest... even if it's same sex with children.
God is gay, that's why there was an immaculate conception... god didn't have the stomach to come down himself... and Joseph has to be the biggest gullible chump since we walked upright... nah I don't believe that shit anyway :-)
"For decades gay and lesbian groups have attacked the Catholic Church for refusing to accept their skewed views on human sexuality and marriage." Conservative Catholic spokesman.
Hello, pot. Have you met kettle?
so when are the wingnuts going to start telling the Catholics who use birth control and IVF that they, too, are not REAL?
One thing I notice on all these gay marriage discussions is the amount of bile thrown around by both sides; it's sickening.
I have two gay co-workers. One is an supervisor, the other, a manager. We have a good working relationship and enjoy discussing a number of topics including gay marriage. They know I don't agree with it even though I am probably more liberal than either of them. It is one issue of many that we have talked about but it has not inhibited us from having productive friendships and agreeing on numerous other areas.
I guess thoughtful people can have disagreements with reverting to demonizing those who disagree with them or reverting to name calling. Impugning someone's beliefs and imposing your own world view on others is something I'd expect at a teabagger party and not a liberal forum but I guess I'd be mistaken.
I don't see so much bile on this thread as a shaking of the head.
Take your co-workers for example, they're roughly equal, although one is a supervisor, the other a manager. Now take the church, it claims absolute moral authority not only over those in the church, which is their right, but also those who aren't members.
Essentially it's bullying, and accusing those who would stand up to the bullying as bullies is a tu quoque, a logical fallacy. And since the pederasty scandal the church has probably actually lost their moral authority for the next generation at least.
And whenever someone starts a personal anecdote with I have two co-workers, they're skirting real close to, "Some of my friends are _____."

Aren't ALL marriages not preformed by the Roman Catholic Church counterfeit?
