Craig Crawford Kisses MSNBC Goodbye

CQPolitic's Craig Crawford says what he's thankful for, November 2009.

Apparently, Craig wasn't really all that thankful for Sarah Palin:

In a Friday surprise, MSNBC political analyst Craig Crawford announced on his CQ Politics blog Trail Mix today that he is leaving the network.

"Three months short of my current contract," he wrote, "I sent the following to the boss, [MSNBC President] Phil Griffin: 'Phil, Just wanted to give you the heads up that my situation with MSNBC has become so unrewarding for me that I've decided to move on. — Craig'"

In an email, Crawford tells TVNewser, "This was a long time coming. I haven't felt like a good fit for MSNBC since the presidential campaign, and their hard turn toward point-of-view programming.

"So many of my booking calls lately have been for segments bashing Sarah Palin, for instance. I was boring myself, and surely the viewers.

"But no particular event brought this on, just my desire to try other outlets and have more fun. I have a fine and rewarding home with the great folks at CQ-Roll Call. I enjoy blogging for them and doing our web videos.

"Perhaps I'm not cut out to be a cable cowboy anymore, dunno. Prefer remaining independent and do my own thing for any channel, including MSNBC, that books me. After a dozen years with one channel, I'd rather play the field for a while."

In the interest of disclosure, I have spoken with Craig in the past--as we set up his book chat last year--and I've communicated with him via Facebook on this as well. I like Craig as a person, and I can certainly understand a level of frustration if the only subject for which he's invited is Palin. However, I don't know if that's the whole truth. In the comment section of his blog, he revealed some more:

i simply could not any longer endure being a cartoon player for lefty games, just gotta move on to higher ground even if there's no oxygen

Lefty games? Oh dear. I asked Craig to explain what that meant, but he refused. In fairness to Craig, since his appearances were basically with Countdown, I don't think that anyone will argue there isn't a lefty slant, but games? It's a troubling characterization. Craig commented again:

i have never and never will forgive Chris [Matthews] for calling me a racist after the West Virginia primary (the last time I will ever go on air with him). Probably should have resigned then and there, but better late than never.

What was that again? I watched an excruciating number of hours of election coverage on MSNBC (and have the high blood pressure and heart troubles to prove it), I missed Chris Matthews calling Craig racist. Mediaite was more successful than I in getting a clarification from Craig:

I haven’t felt like a good fit for MSNBC since the presidential campaign, and the hard turn toward point-of-view programming. No particular event brought this on, just my desire to try other outlets and have more fun. As far as Chris is concerned, on Morning Joe after the West Virginia primary he accused me of always defending Clinton and what he claimed to be her racially motivated campaigning. That’s the problem. Trying to be fair became seen as bias in the new thinking over there. But I do wish my many pals at MSNBC nothing but good things.

This appears to be that incident from Morning Joe. (link goes to Newsbusters)

The truth is, there were times that the anti-Hillary coverage got to me, and I wasn't a Hillary-supporter. But that was over a year ago, and claims of loyalty aside, leaving with bad blood three months shy of your contract ending seems to be a strong statement to make for transgressions more than a year old. Now, I'd like to think that Craig was taking a principled stand against "point of view" programming, but as Mediaite points out, Crawford announced he was going from the frying pan into the fire:

Crawford says on his blog he will be on Fox & Friends as a guest on Monday, although FNC says he won’t be. He also writes in the comments that he is a “free agent.”

Update: Crawford took down the F&F booking info shortly after publication.

Oy. F&F isn't point of view programming, Craig? C'mon now. Clearly the free agent thing had Crawford thinking, because later on Facebook and Twitter he asked what people thought of CNN's Rick Sanchez as a possible new "anchor buddy". I admit, I wasn't too complimentary.

I do think that collectively we're reaching a form of critical mass on being tired of opinion media masquerading as journalism. There will always be a certain percentage of the population that needs their pre-conceived notions reinforced, but by and large, Americans don't trust "journalists" any more, with reason. And this stand of Crawford's--as contradictory as it appears on its face--may be another crack in the dam.

Some stuff you can't make up!

MSNBC is no better than Fox News. They are as much a political tool of the left as Fox is a political tool of the right. Both play their proverbial partisan fiddles as this country burns. Of course, if you are a liberal, than it's okay what MSNBC does because well, they are liberals too and it's okay if they slant their political coverage and play the games that Crawford speaks of. Anyone who encourages networks like MSNBC and Fox encourage misinformation and deceit.

"MSNBC is no better than Fox News"

I don't buy that for a minute.
MSNBC is obviously partisan, but FOX is another planet altogether.

if ever I'd heard one. I've never heard any of the onscreen personalities on MSNBC tell an outright lie and when they make a mistake they correct it. Rachel Maddow may be the finest journalist currently on the air.

When has, say, Keith Olbermann called for a boycott of, say, Pepsi, because some rapper he doesn't like is in a Pepsi commercial, and then deny he ever called for the boycott even though video of same is all over YouTube? Who on MSNBC is friends with racist, hate-talk shock jocks? What, exactly, is the MSNBC version of the "death panel" lies? (Unless, of course, you're referring to "Morning Joe)

on reflection you're right it is a false equivalency and not a false dichotomy.

MSNBC showed a picture of a man with an automatic rifle (or some other firearm) outside a townhall meeting as part of their segment on how the townhall protesters were really a bunch of racists. Turns out the man in the photo was BLACK, but MSNBC cropped out that little contradictory detail.

Or Keith Olbermann going off on a tirade about Scott Brown, calling him every name under the sun?

But DO NOT include Jon Stewart with MSNBC. He is an intelligent, honest humorist and should not be associated with MSNBC. HE HIMSELF even made fun of MSNBC and Rachel Maddow. Did you people forget about that?

Really? Call me when:

1)MSNBC producers are caught cheerleading and pumping up the crowd at one of their Astroturf events
2)When one of their alleged "business reporters (Cavuto) is caught on b-roll DOUBLING the crowd estimates he was just given
3)When MSNBC "flips" the party affiliation of not one but FIVE Congreessman, including reversing the GENDER of the one running against McCain
4)When MSNBC inserts crowd footage from last Summer's protests to show how popular their centerfold girl (Palin) is.
5)When they show selectively edit anti-ACORN footage, INCLUDING THE DEBUNKED "Pimp" FOOTAGE, which never happened.

These are just the ones that pop IMMEDIATELY into my head. Does MSNBC have a political point of view? OF COURSE THEY DO! They ADVERTISE THAT FACT (their tagline: "The place for POLITICS") They don't claim to be Faux NEWS or "Fair and Balanced".

To equivocate the two channels is ignorant.

You say that MSNBC is no better than Fox News.
I would say that that statement is demonstably false.
Who would you say is equal at Fox News to Rachel Maddow as a journalist? When Rachel presents a story, she has her facts straight, and she presents it clearly. Can you say the same for Glen Beck?
The fact that FOX News exists makes the existence of liberal and left media necessary.
Fox deals in fear and demogogory, and it is a good thing that people such as Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Jon Stewart and others are out there, to expose them for what they are, and turn them into the laughingstocks they deserve to be.
The fact is that there is really no such thing as objective media. Every one has a point of view, and most have an agenda. What is best is when you know from advance where your information is coming from.

I'm gonna make a quick stab at this and assume what Craig means is that he's tired of being a token Lefty for MSNBC,which doesn't imply--to me at any rate--that he's down on the Left, but that he doesn't like the one dimensional "character" he's been assigned.

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and not try to ascribe motives to people's behaviors. However...

When Craig says he is tired of "POV programming" and "lefty games" AND THEN ANNOUNCES HE PLANS ON APPEARING ON FOX he loses all credibility! He, and I quote, wants to "Move to higher ground" and announces he is going on Fox & Friends, he contradicts himself. Fox is not higher ground; it is, almost by definition, the mosquito-infested swamp, not high ground!

His very public pronouncement, 3 months before contract renewal time, hints at this: He didn't get the money he wanted! Or he's still smarting from criticism from Matthews. A little thin-skinned Craig? Can dish it out, but can't take it?

diffrntdrummr's picture

I could comment on.I think Craig would want to go on Fox and Fiends because he knows he would be the smartest person in the room, if not the building.Secondly, I think he left MSNBC because they weren't hardly using him anymore. Why stick around where you aren't wanted?I, for one, cannot remember one single time where his opinion or insight on any subject made me a better or more informed person. And don't get me started on his laugh.....

John Emerson's picture

I remember thinking of Craig that, for a Villager, he didn't seem to be a complete moron.

But I was wrong. He was just doing it for the money, and now he can go back to the hog wallow where his friends are.

That puts the Villager non-moron list back to zero.

The Hillary Clinton bashing that went on here on this blog was shameful.

The truth is, there were times that the anti-Hillary coverage got to me.

It pointed out to me just how similar many liberal are to conservatives..basing their opinions on fear and emotions. I guess it was a good eye opener.

ghostrider's picture

I agree. The Hillary bashing on this and other blogs went way past the point of rationality. I tried to reason with people and point out that Obama and Clinton had very similar voting records. Somehow, liberals thought he was simply purer idealogically than Clinton. Now he's pushing a health care mandate, the same mandate he criticized Clinton for during the primaries. Still, I had no problem voting for either. They're both moderate Democrats and agree on alot more than they disagree.
