McCain Media's Collective Yawn At McCain's Big "News"

mccain supporters_52632_0.jpg Oh noes, McCrankypants! Your "base" is tuning you out, just like the rest of America. That's gotta hurt.

Last night, the McCain campaign issued an announcement, dutifully reported upon by Jonathan Martin of the Politico and elsewhere, that McCain would have "big news" in the morning.

The blogosphere was a-twitter. Would it be that Sarah Palin is stepping down? Or that McCain was finally making public his medical records? Or maybe that he would be REALLY maverick-y and declare with his mortgage bailout plan his official independence from the Republican Party? Oh, the possibilities were endless!

But sadly, the reality was far more humdrum. Jonathan Martin, this morning:

That "news" in the morning

Sure enough, it's Bill Ayers.

The McCain campaign is launching a web ad accusing Obama of trying to hide his ties to the 60s-era radical.

I'm loving the use of quotes around news. Another lame-ass attempt, debunked everywhere already, to tie Obama to Ayers. The McCain camp spent God knows how much money to produce a one and a half minute ad that no one cares about (including rightwingers like Michael Smerconish), that makes them look desperate and flailing and the best part, Martin and Mark Halperin over at Time didn't even bother to link up in their coverage.

My friends, that's not the work of a winning campaign. Steve Benen shows how the McCain camp really doesn't want to go there:

The web ad comes about 24 hours after top McCain campaign aides seemingly took the Ayers "issue" (I use the word loosely) off the table.

But as long as we're on the subject, McCain's associations continue to be increasingly interesting as well. We've known for a while that McCain has befriended a convicted felon who advised his supporters on how best to shoot federal officials, used the money of a convicted criminal to help buy a house, befriended a radical anti-Catholic televangelist, befriended a radical anti-American televangelist, was a long-time associate of Charles Keating, and hired for his campaign the publisher of a Confederate nostalgia magazine who has described Nelson Mandela as a "terrorist." This week, we also learned about McCain serving on the board of the extremist U.S. Council for World Freedom, where he worked alongside Iran-Contra figures, and a eugenics researcher studying "white superiority."

Add the name of Frank Keating to your personal bigot's list of totally "unpatriotic americans". There's no fool like an old fool and this man is certainly one. His KKK roots are showing. The people of this country have no time for bullshit like this when we're losing our jobs and homes.

But maybe those rich whackos with their 17 cars and 7 houses simply don't "get it"?

The more desperate and mean and shrill Pain and McPain get, the more they will lose their followers.

People want to identify with winners. Like in... where did all the Dodger fans come from?

So, keep up the nasty ads and speeches, Sen., you will just look like a needy, creepy ex-boyfriend.

during his next debate if he thougt it would get him significant votes that he doesn't already have.

He's done.

And the Ambien isn't helping you, big showboatin John.

Maybe Cindy or Sarah should wear little more than pasties on the campaing trail. That might help. Would certainly clog the news cycle as the world teeters into a global recession.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Paliban's white flag of surrender was actually waved by McDepends during the town hall debate - and on more than one occasion. My score card had him losing pathetically on every question or issue which was raised.

But when it came to being a blowhard egomaniac and feeling the need to remind all of us about how "he knows all about that" or "I know how to fix it", I almost barfed several times. Is he that clueless that he doesn't realize what he is intimating by these "know hows"??

If he already "knows how to fix it" and "knows all about it" why has he sat in the Senate for 26 years and not accomplished anything? The only clear thing he accomplished was the criminal deregulation of our financial market which is now tanking the economies of the entire world. He knew plenty about that, didn't he?

And he "fixed that one" - by gaming the system with Phil Gramm.

Besides, McCain might want to be careful with his Ayers accusation. Someone could easily point out that the very people supporting McCain's campaign (I.E. Neocons) were students and supporters of the Leon Trotsky movement in the 60s.

We are drowning in campaign ads down here in florida. My husband and I were talking about these ads and neither of us could remember seeing a single positive McCain ad. They are all dark and trying to frighten people to dealth of Obama. Obama's ads are just about all positive and telling the viewer about who he is, what he believes and what he sees in the future for our country. Obama is selling himself to the voters. McCain has nothing to sell so he is flinging shit.

sadly we've discovered the real truth about POW John McCain which dishonors him totally.

This information about how he worked to cover up the POW's left behind in Vietnam has not gone unnoticed. His reputation as a war hero is in serious conflict right now due to his actions running the Foreign Affairs Committee and how they covered up the fact that many americans were left behind in Nam.

This will haunt the next three weeks of his campaign as this information comes front and center....have no fear.....it shall be front and center by next week.

Marla in Indiana's picture

Oh thank God someone brought this up....I have been reminding everyone that McCain DEMANDED that the information NOT be declassified regarding the vets that were still in Nam....US had positive information and he would NOT declassify....if I had been a family member of one of them, I would have raised "you know what" and this country needs to be reminded of that. Talk to the VeteransforObama group-they'll set it straight.

CMINCA's picture

McCain, the reason you are losing is that you have no clue how to be in touch with the American people.

Your "news" today should have had something to do with the economy and how you were going to prevent the Dow from falling another 700 points today. Instead, we hear more BS gossip that was debunked months ago and how you are dishonoring yourself with this smear campaign.

A question from the debate: 'What don't you know, and how will you learn it?" http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-bro...

. . . What McCain doesn't seem to know -- yet -- is that he's a dead man walking. He'll learn it definitively on Nov. 4, when he's going to lose the election -- and the polls increasingly suggest that he'll lose big. The GOP as a whole will also lose big. We're in the middle of an epochal shift in U.S. politics. A global economic crisis, two wars and an ongoing nuclear and terrorist threat have left most Americans disgusted by the recklessness of free marketeers and by unilateralist, militarist approaches to foreign policy.

The era of GOP dominance of U.S. politics is over. McCain, the son and grandson of Navy admirals, wanted to be the Republican Party's "steady hand at the tiller." Now he's going down with the ship. . . .

Anonymous's picture

Just ask physicians in this country what Stage 3B Invasive Melanoma actually means and it gives new insight to the descriptive phrase "dead man walking".

McCain's prognosis doesn't go beyond 2010, folks. This means that he will expire in office according to medical oncologists as well as actuarials.

WHY DO YOU THINK HE'S REFUSING TO SUBMIT HIS FULL MEDICAL REPORT - THE FACT THAT IT'S OVER 1,000 PAGES SHOULD TELL US SOMETHING. HIS INVASIVE MELANOMA RETURNED 4 TIMES ALREADY. THE ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY BELIEVES THAT HIS LAST HORRIBLE BOUT IN 2000 WHERE THEY REMOVED PART OF HIS FACE AND THE ATTENDANT LYMPH NODES WAS NOT A "NEW CARCINOMA" BUT, IN FACT, A SATELLITE FROM HIS ORIGINAL CARCINOMA. THIS IS A DEATH SENTENCE IF THIS IS THE CASE.

Telling Sarah to start "telling the elderly gentleman you travel with to grow some, like you". Many said she was the only reason they were voting. This is GREAT! Because thee are so many who will not!

THEY ARE TOAST.

Okay...I was feeling rather masochistic yesterday and watched Brit Hume's show (I don't think I've ever fully watched any Fox News show). On his show with his wonderful "fair and balanced" panel from The Washington Times, the Heritage Foundation, and some other extremely conservative organization, everyone was dismissing the Bill Ayers story. No one thought it was a good idea; however, everyone did agree that McCain can only win if he goes negative. Since Ayers is such a non-story even to the conservative base where will they go next? Whoever said ACORN is right! But, really that's a non-story too. McCain's campaign is just grasping at straws now. Any day now we'll hear about the new Six Degrees of Obama game and how any person or group can be connected to him. Seriously, that's McCain's strategy now.

The United States is falling apart. What does McCain offer as a solution to the problems? Gossip about Obama.

There's one criticism McCain has missed when he talks about Obama. Three of the candidates now have sons serving in Iraq. Obama has no children serving in Iraq. If Obama really loved America his kids would be serving just like McCain's, Palin's and Biden's.

He truly can't believe that Obama is associating with known terrorists - if he did he would have taken steps to remove him from the senate. He would also have taken steps to remove that 'known terrorist' from the Illinois college where he teaches. Right?

If you follow the line that 'sitting in a room with a guy means you adopt his views and ideas' which is really how they're trying to push the Obama / Ayers link, then every person who has sat in Ayers classroom has also now had 'associations with a terrorist'. If this stops Obama somehow getting security clearance for being President (as that fool spouted this morning) then we're also crushing the dreams of all these college students, one of who might well be a future president. Right?

Similarly if Obama truly is 'associating with terrorists' then by McCain sitting in the Senate with him over the past few years, McCain has been associating with a terrorist sympathizer. Trip to Guantanamo for Mr McCain perhaps for some questioning on his links? ;)

McCain has been vocal in the past (and has even brought up in campaign interviews as testimony to his foreign policy experience) about his support for the Northern Ireland peace process. The same NI peace process that has already installed CONVICTED terrorists into government.

I certainly do not condone Ayers views or ideas, BUT he was cleared in court. Yet McCain continues to bring this up. However, bring up Keating and McCain's camp are quick to scream that 'John McCain was cleared of any wrongdoing'. Funny how that hypocrisy stuff works, isn't it?

Re: Why following the Ayers line of attack is bad for McCain
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 14:58 — atothel (not verified)

I agree completely. One thing these mud slingers fail to mention is what Obama should have done when working on the charity board with Ayers. Should have he left the board of an important charity organization simply because there was a person on the board that he a) possibly disaggreed with on current or past issues, b)disagreed with his long past actions, c) was deemed a "domestic" "terrorist" and could have hurt his career? What kind of man would we be talking about that said "I quit working for this charity that works on education issues for underpriveledged kids because another man on the board did some things in the past that i dont agree with, and hasn't said "sorry" yet (i.e. repent)" That wouldn't have been very productive of him.

Shit if the right likes those reason, maybe I should leave my job now cause that lady a few cubicles away got a DUI recently, or cause that guy in shipping is a self proclaimed socialist, or cause the bean counter upstairs hasn't paid his taxes in 20 years. You know, I probably shouldn't associate with these people if I ever want a government job.

The right's hypocricy is unfathomable.

Q It has nothing to do with the elections.

So, what did they expect when the GOP forced liberal McCain down our conservative throats? At the GOP convention, delegates who went to support Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul were met at the entrance by the Secret Service and stripped of their campaign literature, buttons and signs. They were told they were entering McCain territory and had better behave accordingly. Even with no one else in the running McCain couldn't take the nomination on the first ballot. Still, what should have become a brokered convention did not. The truth was swept under the rug. No one else was allowed to be placed in nomination. Delegate votes were counted for McCain that were not cast for him. The whole thing was corrupt and rigged. Do they really think we will support him after that?? I will vote for Baldwin and laugh when McCain gets thrown under the bus by the voters. No, McCain, we are not the stupid sheep you believe us to be!
