Michelle Obama On The Tonight Show

Michelle Obama tells Jay Leno how unimpressed their children are with Barack Obama's upcoming media blitz. Sadly, Malia sounds like my ten year old: as long as it doesn't interrupt their Disney Channel or Nick viewing, they don't pay much attention.

However, Nickelodeon, in an ongoing campaign to get children aware of the election, held an online election between the two candidates, with biographies and education on how we hold elections. Over two million children voted online and they selected Barack Obama as their president of choice. From the mouth of babes...

Michelle was great and I love those family stories showing that at home, Obama is just daddy.

thing to say..."For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country" - Michelle Obama, enough said.

Really? for the first time? Yea, and then she disappeared from the campaign trail for a while.......

And she's never critical of the opposition, either, but empathetic. She is a great example for spouses who campaign in the future. Her down-to-earth manner is refreshing, and wearing J. Crew instead of $4,000 jackets shows you don't need to dress expensively to look elegant. What a classy, intelligent woman who will be a great First Lady!!!

RobertD's picture

"Down-to-Earth" was going to be my comment, too.

I rarely have a problem with any first lady--they're in a position they often didn't bargain for...didn't care for "Bar" Bush because she was mean-spirited.

That said, it will be an honor to have Michelle Obama as First Lady. She's a class act.

DeLaRocha's picture

I was going to say, she's the first First Lady (or potential First Lady) I can remember in my lifetime that America could really fall in love with. Yes, I'm including Hillary. Something about all the others seems elite and glass-case untouchable while the Obamas are very real and down-to-earth. America decides in 6 days!

Bangkok Bob's picture

If Michele Obama is the next First Lady, She is elegant, intelligent and warm. She and Barack will re-energize The Worlds Better opinions about The USA.

Obama and Biden are needed not just for the American People, The whole World shares in our wishes for these men to win the 2008 Election.

That poll makes me frightened for the fate of our country, yet hopeful for the fate of humankind. So what's wrong with the 25% or so Americans that stray from the global average and vote for McCain?

How the hell long has it been since we have had just a nice normal family in the White House? Truman? I dunno, but it sure will be nice for a change. Good for the whole country, really.

were a nice normal family. The fact that he cheated on his wife and that she didn't leave him doesn't make them abnormal, or even particularly unusual.

For that matter, the Bushes were about as normal a family as can ever rise to political heights. Neither abusing drugs or alcohol nor professing born again Christianity is unusual in America.

Now if some White House resident had been caught torturing puppies ...

And Georgie Junior, twisted sociopath that he is, did torture frogs as a youngster.

This is the "angry woman" that the wing nuts wanted us to believe she is? Barack is a lucky man.

I watched a rerun today on c-span of some focus group that was filmed I think Sunday. Anyway, when the guy mentioned Michelle Obama, only one person out of about 10 or 12 had anything positive to say about her. One mentioned something she had written in college and he called her a racist. Of course he admitted he hadn't read what she wrote, but he "heard it was racist". A couple of the people said she frightened them and some said she appeared angry.

Obama turns out to be a truly great, wise president.

Not just a capable, competent tool of corporations and banks.

I hope for the former, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I want to say, dear God, the era of George W. Bush (and Bill Clinton) is at an end. Thank you, dear Lord.

I fear Paulson, Rubin, and Voelker will have their way.

but that Rubin scares the crap outta me. You betcha!

Notice Michelle and Barack do not drag their kids with them everywhere they go. It will be interesting to see what kind of little girl Piper Palin grows up to be compared to Obama's girls.

America needs a normal family for an example right now. Obama is running an ad down here in Florida about kids and what parents need to do for their kids. I don't think there is on negative word in the ad or any mention of McCain. This is simply about the future of America's kids and how important the parent's role is in their young years.

how they gave Chealse such a hard time and said horrible things about her and she turned out pretty good. I've often wondered what the Bush Twins will be like when they evolve into adults. But you make a good point, Palin is the first one I've seen drag her kids to every event, every state, everywhere!!! those kids are going to grow up with some strange values.

pissed off patricia's picture

Piper Palin has already developed the pageant walk and wave and she's only seven. I see problems in her future, especially when they return to normal life in Alaska. I don't know what she will do when she walks into a room with her wave and no one claps for her.

You know, Chelsea turned out great--and she put up with a lot. Even Republicans I know (not wingnuts, mind you) were appalled when Oxycontin Rush went on teevee and called her names--at age, what 12? That was just over the top.

She put up with a lot of crap, and she's turned into a fine adult. Being the family of a president would be a tough go, I imagine.

A trip to any university library to snag a copy of anything by cognitive/developmental psychologists (Piaget to be specific and supported by 60 years of empirical research) will inform you that adolescents below the age of 14 (give or take a few months) are incapable of abstract reasoning that is comparable to those over 14 and, by extension, to adults. How they would perceive and comprehend something so abstract as a political campaign is of no value from the perspective of its substance and gravitas. It is foolish to ascribe any validity to their observations. A valuable and educational activity, perhpas. But no more.

However, I don't know how many kids are going to differ from their parents' choices on who to vote for.

My own five year old asked me who I was going to vote for before voting. Perhaps just think of it as illustrative of the support that Obama has been getting relative to McCain's.

However, I'd argue about those under 14 not being able to do abstract thinking. It is true that they are by and large very literal creatures, but I've been very impressed by the abilities of some of my art history students to be able come up with some very abstract reasoning in our lessons.

how sad

RobertD's picture

Kids get it. They know who "looks like a mean old man," and who looks like the teacher who would listen to them if they had a problem.

And they influence many a parent. A lot of parents--too busy to find out about the issues--listen to what their kids tell them. About school bonds, about candidates, even ballot measures. Kids are masters at framing things.

If they've heard something good about a candidate, they know it. But if they've heard something *bad* they never let go.

OK, off topic...but I hope someone can post the exchange on Hardball today between Bob Shrum and Ed Rollins, long time GOP shill. Shrum (and Matthews) absolutely dissected Rollins and every one of the talking points about Obama and taxes. In fact, Shrum used the word "lie" frequently...A masterful display of how to handle these Republicans pundits. Hopefully it'll find its way to C&L....

income redistribution?

i fully believe that the repug party as we know it is dead

this isnt like the dems loss in 2000, which was more of a repudiation of clinton's character, and not of the party as a whole

the country is coming to the realization that the repug philosophy is bad for the country and the world

i keep hearing wingnuts state that reaganomics works, as long as you cut spending

well no...it doesnt work, cuz reagan never even thought to cut spending...no wingnut thinks about that

its like saying communism works as long as its not controlled by a totalitarian state, and your neighbor aint a lazy bitch

about 20 percent of the people still dont get it...the rest do

i hear talk that the soul of the party will now be fought for by palin vs mittons

if so, i cant see the repugs regaining power till at least 2016

by then, i will be too old to care

The Obamas are people I would like to have as neighbors. They both are extremely intelligent and capable, but they also come across as warm, genuine people who would be nice to know. I can't think of any other Presidential candidate & spouse I've ever felt that way about.

Ralph Nader is a good man. He's been an advocate for consumers and against corporate fraud for decades, and he's done a hell of a lot of good. No question.

I voted for him once--out of protest--and it didn't make a damn bit of difference one way or the other.

At this point, though, he's an elderly man (nothing wrong with that) without ideas. I harbor no animosity toward Ralph. He just won't get my vote. He's not the candidate I want.

I want someone who at least has a hope in hell of bringing the country together after years and years of conflict and lies--and actually has a few ideas about how to try it.

UncleDave's picture

with all You say.

miss_kitty's picture

Universal Healthcare? Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't think YOU have an idea as to his platform.

His ideas are the same as they have been -- protection of the masses from corporate greed and carelessness. No need to come up with new ones, if the old ones are sensical and still need to be implemented.

The two running as (D) and (R) are more alike than different.

RobertD's picture

I respect your post--here and in other places.

As I said:
He's been an advocate for consumers and against corporate fraud for decades, and he's done a hell of a lot of good.

And no, those ideas haven't been implemented. Yes, I'm well aware of his platform. I didn't phrase what I said very well.

Are Democrats and Republicans carbon copies? Often. I think there's one *hell* of a big difference this year, though--both substantively and personally.

I'm proud to have voted for Obama, even though I don't agree with him on every issue. I'm more than happy to give him a chance.

miss_kitty's picture

My posts should be respected :P

Seriously, There is a big difference between the two men running, but they both are pretty much to this point on the corporate tit, which means the populace comes second to both of them by default.

I hope Obama wins, and that he pulls a fast one, but I'd be shocked if the status quo were tremendously upset, which is what needs to happen, IMHO.
I'm glad you voted, and I'm still making Nader my guy, unless Washington State takes some unexpected sharp turn to the right in the next week (is it that close? O, be still my heart!).

:)

but i know that she is dumbing herself down for the national audience

the woman was a high powered atty...she aint no fool

as first lady, she will get alot accomplished

she will also keep obama's head from getting too big

Peter G's picture

you're right. It would be a waste not to take advantage of such an intellect. On the other hand look what happened to Hillary Clinton when, as First Lady, she led the charge on health care reform. She became a lightning rod for every right wing nut in existence. I sincerely hope Michelle Obama fares better.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

ConcernedCanuck's picture

I don't understand the attraction with political wives. Accomplished? She isn't getting voted in. HE IS. She is his wife. Voters don't vote for wives. Hillary accomplished little, because, she was Bill's wife, and I would imagine the laughing stock in Washington for putting up with Bill's philandering more than anything. (I know, Rethugs do it to, but remember, they are all insiders and they know more than the public does). Michelle seems intelligent, and very gracefull. Other than that. Nothing. She isn't running for office, or to clean up healthcare, or even the local dog catcher. She's a spouse. Nothing more.

Peter G's picture

First Ladies can have a tremendous impact. Look at Eleanor Roosevelt or Betty Ford. They each did things that made America a better place in their own way. They may have no position or power within the framework of the constitution but they can get very important things done.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

ConcernedCanuck's picture

I guess so. Usually they smile alot for the camera and read story books to primary age children. Oh and they meet foreign leader's spouses and share translators over tea or coffee.
Hillary is a prime example of an ambitious First Lady who tried to do something and was basically told to "shut up, put on the apron, and go back to your First Lady duties".....Perhaps someday their spouses will be allowed to have a real job.

Peter G's picture

Her aims regarding health care were perhaps a touch ambitious for her times.(Who would be surprised by that?) I still admired her for trying.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

tree's picture

Look at Dolly Madison. First Ladies have huge jobs that are under-reported and under-appreciated (nothing new about women's work being under-valued, I suppose). Try reading one book about a First Lady and not come away impressed by the demands of their job. I think Michelle Obama will be a fabulous First Lady. She is the warmth to Barack's cool, and they both exhibit grace under fire.

And as for children's opinions, I believe this election is important not only FOR them but TO them. They listen and talk amongst themselves. Want an 18 y/o to vote? Get them interested at 10.

I can't even fathom Cindy McCain as the first lady! Not only does this witch hate to touch people, she is hideous looking and on the other hand Michelle Obama is warm, friendly, funny, and SMART! GO OBAMA/BIDEN '08!
