Berlin's annual public funding for art is more than that of the entire U.S., and that's typical of Europe. Europeans, and many others, appreciate art on a more commercial level because they help the artists make a living while the artists are making art.
Here in the U.S., unless you can sell it, it's worthless, and if you can't sell your art, you're a worthless artist. U.S. artists will still create, but without health insurance, rent money, etc. Says volumes about our culture (or lack thereof), no?

Your peanut butter might have salmonella. Obama brings a gay bishop to the party.
I think he's scummy enough to pardon people, but, at the same time, he's arrogant enough to believe he didn't do anything wrong, and thus he won't be prosecuted, anyway. Therefore, in his warped mind, there's no need for a pardon. I mean, shouldn't he have gone all the way with Libby, for example? Anyway, people are getting over-charged for under-valued homes.
The President doesn't have the legal authority to issue a pardon for international war crimes. The President can only issue pardons for violations of US laws. I think the real issue here is whether or not the American courts will have the balls to extradite any of these people.
good article by lisa margonelli in The Nation. she mentions some interesting ideas regarding the electrical grid. the cost of power outages have cost up to $180 billion a year while the energy wasted during transmission has doubled since the 1970's. the article also gets into deregulation and the secrecy involved in pricing basically low income customers are subsidizing high quantity users. the article ends by
explaining the future needs. each home would be fitted with a "smart meter" able to see the price and orgin of their electrical power.
currently there are two areas involved in a pilot program: boulder and washington's olympic peninsula apparently the smart meter has shown savings of 10-40% on electricity. with more plug in vehicles coming onboard this will have to be addressed.
After eight long, tiresome years, President Al Gore won't be missed. Even if he did save the planet
No one thought Al Gore would be a loveable president, but, after eight years in the White House, he has gotten truly tiresome. The droning voice, the purchase of an eco-friendly robot dog, the campaign for carbon-free diamonds - all these things were hard to take, and he has been way too smug about reversing global warming. I think we've gone too far in the opposite direction, especially in light of the glacier that recently crushed Wasilla.

an area of interest being looked at by Obama and his people is providing more broadband. this is of big interest to smaller rural towns. the cities are getting too big. there are plenty of demographic studies that show they're going to get bigger. one of the challenges for rural communities is comprehensive healthcare one answer to this complicated issue is live video real time medicine. this would make smaller towns more appealing and help out the healthcare debacle. so putting more glass in the ground will be a good investment.

For me, politics came way before teh internets. So even though I've tried to learn enough to be functional, I'm still not too good at what I'm sure is simple stuff. I have some questions, and please pardon if they seem kind of stupid.
1. What is the difference between the standard C&L and the Video Cafe?
2. With the new "indent threading" (there's got to be a better description). I check for new comments by doing a "Find on this page" search through my browser (Firefox). I get plenty of unnecessary stops on the word "new" but it basically works and I find the comments with the red "New" with little problem. Still, is there a better way?
3. My real problem is when a thread extends into two or more pages. If I click "load new comments" on one page, it seems to load all of them on every page, but after I review one page for new comments then check the others, the "new" designation doesn't seem to work on the second or third pages. I've tried opening each page in a separate tab, but no luck.
..between now and Feb 17th. I don't know, but I hope that's all it is.
My brother's owned a HD television since 2006 (his new flat screen seems to receive signal far better than the big box he had before), but I noticed that my 7-yr-old 17" still has a clearer and less snowy picture quality than even his newest set.
If we get to the date that everything is to change and I have to deal with the snow, I'll for one be pissed. I didn't have all this snow until about 3 months ago.
You know what, I think that Bush, Cheney and their cronies are banking on "mainstream America" not giving a shit about a possible 20th hijacker being tortured. After all, it was 9/11 and those ragheads deserve a little payback, right? In their minds, 9/11 justifies anything and the polls probably support them.
That was really enjoyable, thanks! They have a lot of sculptures like those at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City, CA but nothing that detailed/small.
I know that the congress is poised to pass the cigarette taxes to support the CHIP program that Bush vetoed. I read this in the New York Times today and thought it was interesting -
"In Florida and many other states, tobacco money has often been used like an inheritance from a distant uncle. A 2007 report from the Government Accountability Office found that only a third of the settlement money paid out nationally from 2000 to 2005 went to health care or tobacco control."
So, money that has already been given to the states for healthcare has been spent elsewhere. Why should we believe that taxes collected from smokers would be used correctly? This is another example of the majority abusing the minority, just as California voters did to gays.
REINING IN THE IMPERIAL PRESIDENCY Lessons and Recommendations Relating to the Presidency of George W. Bush
House Committee on the Judiciary Majority Staff Report to Chairman John Conyers, Jr. January 13, 2009
Barack Obama took the next big step in his Republican charm offensive on Tuesday night, when he dined with several of the nation's most prominent conservative pundits.
The president-elect arrived at the Chevy Chase, Md., home of syndicated columnist George Will shortly after 6:30 p.m., according to a press pool report. Greeting him at the residence were other luminaries of the conservative commentariat, including the Weekly Standard's William Kristol, New York Times columnist David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post
Why would ANYBODY ever want to dine with William Kristol?

As Israel pulverises Gaza, questions and doubts about Israeli policy are becoming more prominent in the American media. The failure of the war in Iraq and the attendant discrediting of neoconservatism has opened up new space in the American conversation. With the American right dejected and weakened, there's less pressure on the press to display the kind of boorish one-sidedness that self-congratulatory conservatives like to call "moral clarity".
Israel's disproportionate retaliation in Gaza is increasingly recognised as both brutal and, in all likelihood, ultimately futile. In destroying Gaza, Israel is also destroying the American taboo that has ensured the country such unstintingly favourable media coverage.

Unless and until some dollar metric is applied, then we have the standard American measure of the worth of the human being.
