Elwyn Tinklenberg's diary :: ::
Kossacks:
The last few hours have been nothing short of astounding. Since Congresswoman Michele Bachmann appeared on MSNBC"s Hardball earlier tonight, there"s been a deluge of support unlike anything we have seen. We are so grateful to the Daily Kos community and others who"ve sounded the alarm on Bachmann"s extremist, shameful rhetoric and pitched in with whatever they can to help end her tenure in Congress.
Our phones haven"t stopped ringing. Many have called in to say they"re sorry they can only send money and wish they could be here to help. We want you to know what a difference your funds are making and that, thanks in part to your help, we are confident that we will be able to win this race. We are preparing to get out the vote on an unprecedented scale, and with supporters like you we will have the resources we need to get the job done.
I am both hopeful and humbled at the reminder you gave me tonight " that in our country"s darkest times, it is the strength and belief and action of ordinary Americans that ultimately brings about the change we need. From the hardworking folks in Minnesota"s Sixth District to all of you: we are proud to have you on our side.
After a nearly eight-hour trial in Alexandria traffic court, Rep. Vito Fossella of New York was found guilty last night of driving under the influence, but the judge did not decide whether the Republican congressman was so drunk he should go to jail.
Instead, Chief Alexandria District Court Judge Becky J. Moore decided to hold a separate hearing on whether Fossella's blood-alcohol content was above 0.15, which would require a mandatory five-day jail term, despite hours of testimony and argument on the issue. A separate hearing on a traffic charge is not unheard of but highly unusual, veteran lawyers said.
his elite status and invaluable services to the gubberment mechanics, without which all life as we know it would grind to a halt if he went missing for a few days, means he will get fined and community service, being Repug prob some child work or counting charity money.
Everytime I go to Europe, I am jealous that they have better governments than we do (well, the places I have gone). It's depressing. And I get to have to go through the I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM! and explain how Bush managed to get into power and then stay there.
I spent a month in Ireland in 2003, and I had to do the same thing - I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM AND HATE HIS IGNORANT ASS. Thankfully, people were understanding.
Was hearing people say that when they heard an American was coming to train them, they expected a dullard cut from the same cloth as Bush. They seemed to think that every American is uneducated (in the ways of our politics) and, well, everything that Bush displays. (Which might account for that German guy in a prior thread who started his post with You Fucking American Morons.) And I won't even go into the whole Palin thing and how she is viewed.
I literally shocked the shit out of them. I made several friends and feel I represented my country well.
Sad thing is, non-Americans can get caught up in stereotyping just as we can. I was working at Redwood National Park years ago when a couple from New Zealand came in. They were traveling from Seattle to LA (granted, in Blue America mostly, but N. Cal. is pretty conservative. Note: SF is not NORTHERN California.)
When I asked them how they'd enjoyed the trip so far, they sorta looked sheepishly at each other and said, "We're amazed at how friendly and helpful everyone's been. It's not at all the America we expected from the TV shows we get back home."
a motel in Floriduh. We get folks from all over the world who can't understand how Bush got voted in TWICE. I try and explain. They listen politely and then walk away.
from Ireland (her 4th or 5th trip back to the cottage where her grandfather was born) and she told me a story that's about 180 degrees from yours.
Mom was talking to her cousins' neighbor in the pub when the neighbor said if he was American he could never vote for Obama. Mom asked why, and the fella said, quite brashly, it was because Obama is black.
Mom then brought up how so many Americans decided not to vote for JFK because he was Roman Catholic? Was that right?
by Americans planning on visiting family or whatever in Europe,
I always suggest wearing an anti Bushco TShirt as evidence to the Euros as to not being a loyal servant of the beast.
As an American living in Europe for the past 6 years, I've learned a lot about how we see foreigners and how Europeans view Americans...it's not pretty.
I'm always so embarrassed when Bush and American policies are brought up, and I try to explain how not everyone in the US is like Bush. They look at me skeptically.
But one thing that really surprised me is how much they love Clinton here. He has one of the best international reputations as an American president. I still get a lot of questions about Clinton and Lewinsky. When I tell them that there are Americans who know that Bush and his cronies are criminals who have done unbelievable things to fuck up the country and the world, they ask me why we could try to impeach Clinton and yet not hold Bush accountable. This is the point where I feel so utterly helpless...
I don't know exactly when he did this interview with Peter Jennings, but I came across this clip of Clinton on YouTube that somehow really got to me - he talks about all the lies of the Republicans against Democrats... it still applies today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wJMO7cmhHo
I've been in Asia for 11 years, and I can ditto the above from here. If I may, I also knows lots of Australians that feel the same, so that's 2 more continents against Bush. To sum up, Europe, Asia and Australia also hate Bush. And as a Canadian, we do too.
If you could have seen our jaws drop in 2004--- not pretty.
Believe me...when I went to bed on election nite Kerry was winning COMFORTABLY...when I woke up in the morning they had bush winning and believe me MOST of the nation was in a state of shock except for those poor black folks in Florida who got f*cked over trying to vote. The repubs turned in an ugly performance that time and are doing so again. The only way McCain't will be elected...voter fraud BY THE REPUBS AGAIN! Back then you couldn't even speak your mind about it...the repubs just kept saying to "get it over it...you lost." It was heartbreaking AND sickening. Now we know they cheated...won't happen again.
"Andrew Lahde, manager of a small California hedge fund, Lahde Capital, burst into the spotlight last year after his one-year-old fund returned 866 percent betting against the subprime collapse.
Last month, he did the unthinkable -- he shut things down, claiming dealing with his bank counterparties had become too risky. Today, Lahde passed along his "goodbye" letter, a rollicking missive on everything from greed to economic philosophy. Enjoy."
after the Wednesday night debate? He was rambling on about how a McCain presidency would be so much different than Bush, but he ended his diatribe by saying that a "Bu- er, McCain presidency..."
Another classic moment in the McCain campaign - even his top advisors can't tell the difference between McCain and Bush. I have it on my DVR, but have absolutely no idea on how to get it on youtube, etc.
that you have to have the cables from your DVR into your computer where you can capture it on the computer (using some kind of capture software) and then upload it.
Now that they are fairly well convinced that McCain will lose, they are trying to scare people into voting republican congress and senate. They are really afraid of Democrats having a filibuster proof majority.
The McCain campaign released Cindy McCain's tax returns late Friday afternoon, and the numbers might make Joe the Plumber blush. The beer-company executive reported income last year of nearly $4.2 million, and more than $6 million in 2006.
Right now I'm doing some renovations (read: it needs work) so it's not up for rent. But it may be in the next few months. Get back to me in Dec.: mattjude_fagan@yahoo.com
Oh, OK! My best friend and his wife had a Downs Syndrome child when he was 40 (the 4th of his 4 kids) and it made me take stock of how I used the word "retard." His son is a beautiful, loving child, so that's why I frequently ask posters to not use the term "retard." It humbled me greatly, and made me re-evaluate many things in life.
I haven't ever been offended easily (hell, I am usually the one doing the offending). That said, I am offended by ignorance and closed mindedness. But I have always been that way.
Dave and Joanne - Perhaps complacency isn't the correct word. And taknig offense is certainly justified when one is confronted with bigotry and hatred.
Maybe a better inclusive term would be "experiential wisdom."
I'm just curious; if we keep the reply thread going, will we eventually get a very tall, skinny box for each post?

Start diggin, sweetie! I'll follow along with the light.
Formerly electronics, now into mech engineering.
fancied a change of career after coming to the US.
One major problem with working in electronics is no free time (or will after a long week) to do it as a hobby.
Its more fun as a hobby than a job, even tho you dont get paid for hobbies.
No, just one who doesn't consider me an adversary. (Shit, did I refer to Peyton Place here, or on another thread?)
Seriously, don't ever give up on love. I may sound like a Pollyanna, but what's the option? When my Dad died, my Mom - who had been married to him for 44 years, feared being alone. She then met a man who loved to dance, and fell in love all over again - at age 65. They stayed together - and in love - for 15 years, when they passed away within 6 months of each other.
I am a tad picky...I like SCARY smart men (looks I am very flexible on...I prefer big guys, but hey, it's a preference). The scary smart thing is a bitch to find. :D
Oh, and has to be liberal. I dated a conservative a few years ago and we had some values issues...as in some of his were fucked up. :D He was a nice enough guy but those couple of issues were a killer for me.
Funny thing was, both he and my Mom were very conservative - in terms of talking points. But when I discussed reality-based issues, they were much more moderate. Makes me wonder about the effect of Fox-type broadcasting on normal people with the ability to think when PRESSED INTO DOING SO.
Do a Youtube search for McCain Penguin Batman,
One of the sixties Batman TV shows had an election between Batman and the Penguin for some office, its WcCain to a tee.
Some people have made various mash up videos using them, rather funny.
My take is, that Joe the Plumber helped McCain a little. Waiting for the data from http://www.electoral-vote.com/ to see if that's true. (Hope it's not.) But, the thing to remember is, this election is not in the bag. And the Presidency is not the only thing. Unless we get the Senate and House, any agenda can wind up in gridlock. Do the people at the Palin rallies strike you as the sharpest knives in the drawer? Maybe not, but they're all smart enough to vote. We have got to get out the vote, like never has been seen before. The GOP knows, that they need to disenfranchise 5M (black) voters. We need to turn out 15M voters that have never voted before. Keep talking it up in your neighborhoods.
Joe the plumber is a braindead, mentally retarded, dumbfuck. Who cares what some asshole thinks who hasn't yet figured out that the republicans have been hosing the shit out of us over the last eight years?
I would like to slug him in the teeth, just for being so cluelessly fucking stupid!
This frerakin' loser is worried about paying taxes when he becomes a super rich plumber? I have a friend who has a very successful plumbing business going back to the 80's, and he probably brings home about $80,000 a year from what I can tell.
And Joe, the republican dupe, is worried about what will happen when he makes $250,000 a year. What a laugh. He's so stupid, he'd be lucky to get a job at Wal Mart.
McCain and Davis must laugh their ass off at this moron behind closed doors!
He's actually called Sam Wurzelbacher, prob a relation of Robert Wurzelbacher, Republican donor and one of the Lincoln Lending/Keating five people who got jailed way back.
This most likely makes Sam a Republican operative, not a random Joe off the street, but more of a Billo ambush type playing for the cameras.
Just five days ago, Mr. Wurzelbacher, 34, lived in anonymity, a single father who worked all day at his plumbing business and came home to fix dinner and help his son with his homework, as he said on national television.
But he became the hero of conservatives and Republicans when he stopped Mr. Obama, who was campaigning on Shrewsbury Street on Sunday, and asked whether he believed in the American dream.
Some report on the internet are suggesting that Joe Wurzelbacher is
the brother of the son in law of Charles Keating…just to further tie
him to McCain, Keating’s son-in-law, Robert Wurzelbacher, served a 40-
month prison sentence in 1993 in connection with Keating’s Lincoln
Savings and Loan collapse. Since then, who knows what he’s been up to.
Who in the he|| went and messed with the layout of C&L? Man it was the best place to comment and follow a story. Now it's like an act of congress just to post this stupid comment.
Why would you change something that worked so well? You even won the 2008 Bloggies and you do this?
"I sidled up to one of the Obama supporters and asked why they were there, what they were trying to accomplish.
As he was telling me a large, bearded man in full McCain-Palin campaign regalia got in his face to yell at him.
"Hey, hey, " I said. "I'm trying to interview him. Just a minute, okay? "
The man began to say something about how of course I was interviewing the Obama people when suddenly, from behind us, the sound of a pro-Obama rap song came blaring out of the windows of a dorm building. We all turned our heads to see Obama signs in the windows.
This was met with curses, screams and chants of "U.S.A" by McCain-Palin folks who crowded under the windows trying to drown it out and yell at the person playing the stereo.
It was a moment of levity in an otherwise very tense situation and so I let out a gentle chuckle and shook my head.
"Oh, you think that 's funny?! " the large bearded man said. His face was turning red. "Yeah, that 's real funny…" he said.
And then he kicked the back of leg, buckling my right knee and sending me sprawling onto the ground."
It also sounds like the person who assaulted the journalist knew who he was and did it in response to one of their reports.
Tony Wilkins said:
I talked to the guy that dropped Killian to the ground. He said he didn't like the Pail porn post.
What I read was that the SCOTUS threw out the GOP wanting the OH SOS to do some kind of database cross referencing which could not have taken place due the the shear numbers.
Well, isn't that interesting. The biggest Republican "voter fraud" cause, involving ACORN among others, just got thrown out by George Bush's conservative Republican US Supreme Court. And make no mistake - as one of the leading conservative publications, Human Events, pointed out yesterday, this case was all about ACORN:

Let's see how skinny we can get this!
Sandwiched between three great guys! (Ferrofluid...I think you're a guy...sorry if not).
My life is complete. I can die happy now! ;-)
a VERY cynical ever challenging rabid truth seeker Brit.
I also like to take things to pieces and build things.
with any of those things!! What do you like to build?
And the accent is cute, too boot. :D
Formerly electronics, now into mech engineering.
fancied a change of career after coming to the US.
One major problem with working in electronics is no free time (or will after a long week) to do it as a hobby.
Its more fun as a hobby than a job, even tho you dont get paid for hobbies.
I am very lucky that I love what I do. I think of it as much as a hobby as a livelihood, myself. We are both very, very lucky!!
And now, I must go...before I fall asleep on you and everyone...and start drooling on your shoulders.
Very unladylike and unappealing. :D
Cheers!
Wow - no wonder I'm tired....and satiated.
I need a cigarette. (SWOOOOON)
Text box vanishes !!!

Point! Good night all!
Sweet dreams!
I think I am going to follow Matt out. Night night all...sweet dreams all around!
Good night to both of you.
Sweet dreams!
This was cool. Night.
'Night, Dave!
That is exactly what they are!!
And just what I hope for.
Hey I can be scarey. Booga, booga.
You scared me!
Funny thing was, both he and my Mom were very conservative - in terms of talking points. But when I discussed reality-based issues, they were much more moderate. Makes me wonder about the effect of Fox-type broadcasting on normal people with the ability to think when PRESSED INTO DOING SO.
That must be just what is reported, bet the rest is stashed away offshore IRS avoiding etc.
As with Wall Street and their reported stashing the $700 billion offshore in the Caymans.
Note to John and the site monitors (a great name for a band): I LOVE the "edit" feature.
too. Have use it more than once.
We are the ones that need international monitoring of our elections.
We need a whole new system. This one is badly broken.
SCOTUS foiled the repugs purge in Ohio.
The repair crew is on the way, just as soon as they can get past the republican roadblock.
Because it really wasn't.
Someone actually humorous could have done a lot better, after all McSame is a comic's dream.
Opinions being what they are....
Sorry, but you are wrong. I thought it was hilarious.
Plus, she's cute as can be; in a sarcastic republicans are the spawn of satan kind of way.

Who in the he|| went and messed with the layout of C&L? Man it was the best place to comment and follow a story. Now it's like an act of congress just to post this stupid comment.
Why would you change something that worked so well? You even won the 2008 Bloggies and you do this?
Later, uh probably not.
just go to the righthand corner register and you're a member. So to speak.
Shouldn't it be the left corner ;)
It's better if you register. Without registration it sucks ass.
WcCain and Stalin's message of hate is working its charm, their rabble are getting physical.

It also sounds like the person who assaulted the journalist knew who he was and did it in response to one of their reports.
Rush and the other right wing talking heads are the ones riling these people up with the Ayles terrorist crap and the ACORN B.S.
today, no evidence of a conspiracy
What I read was that the SCOTUS threw out the GOP wanting the OH SOS to do some kind of database cross referencing which could not have taken place due the the shear numbers.
