Project Censored, a media research project operating out of Sonoma State University in California has spent several years looking at media accountability and how the freedom of the press aids democracy:

At Project Censored, we examine the coverage of news and information important to the maintenance of a healthy and functioning democracy. We define Modern Censorship as the subtle yet constant and sophisticated manipulation of reality in our mass media outlets. On a daily basis, censorship refers to the intentional non-inclusion of a news story – or piece of a news story – based on anything other than a desire to tell the truth. Such manipulation can take the form of political pressure (from government officials and powerful individuals), economic pressure (from advertisers and funders), and legal pressure (the threat of lawsuits from deep-pocket individuals, corporations, and institutions).

I surely don't mean to be snide as I ask, if I don't hear about them how will I know if they happen?

Why did they censor the story of Sibel Edmonds from the list. Her story goes to corruption, blackmail, drug trafficing and treason at the highest levels of our government.

That's a VERY conspicuous omission.

I really don't see why the conservatives think "their" America is changing. We still have segregation and slavery to this day. What's changed?

The absolute most significant entry on this list is Obama's affiliation with the "Trilateral Commission." It is exceedingly dangerous to America and the world. It is where the secret meeting he and Hillary Clinton had when they ditched the press corps and disappeared together.

And I thought it was the item voted most likely to be a conspiracy nut story and there are several in the list that were eligible for entry in that category.

It's people like you, and the blanket characterization of anything too taxing for your brain to be labeled a "nut story", that enables the insidious secrecy to continue and proliferate. The perpetrators count on deniers such as yourself to further their evil agendas. (Move along people, nothing to see here.)

This is a pretty good list, and it illustrates an important fact: The "anti-Establishment" perspective on current events is trans-partisan in nature.

This list includes several topics that would be dismissed on this site as "right-wing conspiracy paranoia" if Project Censored didn't have a politically acceptable pedigree: "Obama's Trilateral Connections," the story critical of the UN's International Criminal Court, several stories critical of the Wall Street bailout, the piece about the dollar glut driving US foreign policy....

Those subjects could be covered by either In These Times or The New American; they would fit in at either CounterPunch or Prison Planet. It seems to me that rather than dismissing certain non-establishment sources as "wingnuts," it would be wise to evaluate their work on the merits and stop obsessing over labels.

You are absolutely correct. "Wingnuts" do not hold domain on hidden truth, and there is much.

Shame on anyone still relying solely on their teevee to keep them informed. Almost everyone should know by now we can not trust corporate media. If you can read this comment you can Google anything and pursue the truth on anything censored by the monopolies on your computer. We are not China, we have freedoms.

Your astute observation is far more accurate than many readers of "Liberal/Progressive" blogs and other information outlets realize. Increasingly and very disappointingly, the practice of selective censorship and unfavorable manipulation of content is creeping into some of the most popular and trusted sites (HuffPo?). It is discouraging and was not anticipated.
Much to their appreciated credit, C&L has NOT fallen into this dark hole. This is more than admirable.

It's bad form to slam the site you're commenting on. Think of this as an open house at John Amato's home. You are a guest and as such, have a social responsibility not to attack other guests or the hosts or generally piss in the punch. If you keep doing so in multiple posts, it's no wonder the site team escorts you out the door.

Further, your allegations are just manifestly and provably false. I defy you to look at Susie Madrak's post and find her deferring to Obama as some sort of savior. I have criticized Obama since his candidacy when I feel it warranted and so do every one of the other contributers. Just because we don't see eye to eye with you doesn't mean we're blind to the failures of Obama and the Democratic Party. If we're raising money for our Blue America PAC to advertise against Blue Dogs, we're clearly not blindly partisan.

I came in here looking for the floor but only see surface tension of a fluid process. That process being a "go along to get along" press and a public that mistakes conservatism for a boat that refuses to rock too far.

Why didn't ATC release the fatal descent rate of Connell's plane I wonder.
And why had the story stated "timing and circumstances of Connell’s death—between deposition and trial—are too suspicious and convenient for Rove and the Bush administration, not to merit a thorough investigation."
I doubt the investigation would have been less thorough without name-dropping the Bush administration.

Good pilots can get in over their heads when ice buildup on wing surfaces and the resultant unpublished V-speeds cheat them out of a life.

If the publications such as the Times and Newsweek wish to survive, it won’t be by “getting along”. That has been their downfall. These stories are what SHOULD be printed. These are the “Man Bites Dog” stories that will pique interest and change. Instead they play it safe, and leave the uncomfortable questions to be asked on the Intertubes.

I can sympathize with the so-called “tea-baggers” in their misguided frustration and anger over “big government”. They should be angry over mismanagement, overspending, overtaxing, and corruption in Washington. But they are being played. The time for the marches and rallies was 6-7 years ago. They are now being orchestrated to rail against who they’re told. Silly sheep.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened to Nixon if the Watergate conspiracies were exposed in this Faux News era. Most likely he would have become a national hero and elected to a third term. WaPo, where for art thou now?

Politicians almost always prefer private over public. One can give campaign contributions and the other can’t. Paying for reform could be very simple, except for the $46 million of insurance industry money taken by Congress. Obama’s Dems are as lucky as the Republicans, so it has become a major congressional battle. Politicians don’t do things for free, don’cha know.

– Campaign cash is at the heart of every societal problem. Follow the money and you’ll virtually always find a politician at the end with his or her hand out. State and federal politicians are all the same.
– Obama made a massive strategical blunder by trying to pass any legislation without first getting campaign bribes out of the system. The bankers own the financial markets and the insurers own health care, and you’ve seen where these have ended up.
– The people don’t own anything, when at least they should own their politician. Had we public funding of campaigns we would have fixed health care years ago and our taxes would be 30% less than they are today.
– It usually has less to do with a politician’s core beliefs or those of his constituents, and more to do with which industry he gets his money from. And the industries know who can be bought.
– The corruption will not stop. It is the Number One cause of our economy crash, and it will continue as long as politicians take private cash for their campaigns.
– It is not the illegal corruption that is so bad, and anyway that will likely never stop. But the legal corruption, campaign contributions, is worse and must immediately cease. It is pure political bribery. If they weren’t in congress they’d go to jail for accepting bribes and even extortion.

Regarding Sibel Edmonds, she's been in this list in the past, do your research. Do you think they're going to list her every year?

I wish the progressive blogs would take a look at this list and realize this is what we should be talking more about, and not the rantings of Beck and Rush. I swear somedays I can hardly tell the difference between the left and right blogs because they both feature headlines about Rush and Beck. So what if it's a different spin. In spending soooo much time covering these wingnuts we ignore what is a greater concern.

they may have covered Sibel Edmonds in the past, the story bears repeating, especially since the case seems to be moving forward, and new revelations regarding Jean Schmidt have come to light. The idea is to cover the TOP 25 most censored stories, no. 21, for example, should probably fall lower on the list than Sibel Edmonds.
