Tides Foundation To Beck's Advertisers: Stop Or You'll Have Blood On Your Hands
It's time to stand up to violent rhetoric and demand change. And that's exactly what Drummond Pike, CEO of the Tides Foundation has decided to do by going to the advertisers of Glenn Beck's program--the one that so inspired and motivated domestic terrorist Byron Williams (and yes, I'm going there)--and telling them their continued sponsorship makes them equally culpable:
Drummond Pike, who along with his organization was recently targeted by an assassin inspired by Beck's program, penned a letter on Friday to the Chairmen of the Boards of JP Morgan Chase, GEICO, Zurich Financial, Chrysler, Direct Holdings Americas, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Lilly Corporate Center, BP, and The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc.
In it, he detailed the alarm he felt over having a "person carrying numerous guns and body armor" attempt to start a "revolution" by murdering "my colleagues and me."
To say we were "shocked" does not adequately describe our reaction. Imagine, for a moment, that you were us and, had it not been for a sharp eyed highway patrolman, a heavily armed man in full body armor would have made it to your office with the intent to kill you and your colleagues. His motive? Apparently, it was because the charitable, nonpartisan programs we run are deemed part of a conspiracy to undermine America and the capitalist system, which is hogwash.[..]
I respectfully request that you bring this matter of your company's sponsorship of hate speech leading to violence to the attention of your fellow directors as soon as possible. I believe no responsible company should advertise on Fox News due to its recent and on-going deplorable conduct.
While we may agree to disagree about the role our citizens and our government should play in promoting social justice and the common good, there should be no disagreement about what constitutes integrity and professionalism and responsibility in discourse - even when allowing for and encouraging contending diverse opinions intelligently argued. This is not a partisan issue. It's an American issue. No one, left, right or center, wants to see another Oklahoma City.
The next "assassin" may succeed, and if so, there will be blood on many hands. The choice is yours. Please join my call to do the right thing in this regard and put Fox News at arm's length from your company by halting your advertising with them.
Now, because I can already hear the pearl clutching from the right wing blogs: THIS IS NOT CENSORSHIP OF GLENN BECK. Glenn Beck can continue to say anything that floats through the transom of that brain of his and no one--including the government (which is how the First Amendment applies)--is stopping him from speaking. But Glenn Beck (or anyone, in point of fact) is not guaranteed a national platform with corporate sponsors. This, you right wing lurkers, is your vaunted free market at work. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that their advertising dollars is sponsoring rhetoric that is inciting violence. Those corporations simply have to decide if it's worth the possible business lost if they continue to do so.
There are multiple campaigns that reach out to Beck's sponsors. My personal favorite is StopBeck.com and they've been very successful. The NY Times reported a total of 296 sponsors have dropped Beck. In fact, they reported that due to combined efforts, Glenn Beck's program in the UK have not had a sponsor for almost EIGHT MONTHS. That should also give you an idea of how this is not a profit-driven move for Murdoch and Ailes, because there's no way they're making a profit off Beck's program. You can get a list of Beck's remaining sponsors here.

Thank you , Thank you Tides Foundation.
Beck is a sick person and the sooner he is stopped the sooner we can all recover.

Please add "not" before "guaranteed".
It's because he has national sponsors that he gets to talk on the national level.

All you libs a jealous because Glenn is America's favorite fetid stool.
If anything libs are too kind hearted to do anything to Beck other than try to understand him and forgive him. that's why he has failed to turn us into haters like he is. He is working overtime to make us as angry as he himself is, but he won't be successful. The hate belongs to him and his republi-baggers alone.

Beck wants to return to the days of the robber barons, when there were no regulations and people like Insull (his idol) took money from investors and lost it all, thereby frittering away countless folks' life savings and turning them into paupers. It would seem he wants to turn America into a country where all the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few, and the rest of us are serfs. Yet the right wing calls the left elitists just because some of us have college educations. Hypocrites. I am glad the Tides Foundation is hitting Beck and Faux in their pocketbooks, because all they understand is the power of money. But who knows? Maybe that MUSLIM investor in Faux will continue to bankroll Beck. (I wonder why the ladies of "The View" didn't bring up the fact that that Saudi investor in Faux is also a Muslim when O'Reilly started talking about Muslim terrorists ... )
Sorry to disappoint you Ape-man and no offense intended , but they have turned me into a hater , absolutely , I absolutely loath and despise Beck , Rove , Cheney and ... well , it's long list , they all happen to be Reich wingers . I understand alright , I understand and recognize evil and no I don't forgive or excuse them for being evil , these are as evil as any in history , although we have not seen what they are capable of yet , what we have seen and heard is bad enough .
Yes, well he certainly has done and said the most hateful things i've ever witnessed on UTube, on a regular basis, over the airwaves, and day after day. And i agree about the hateful things the others you mentioned have done. I'll give you that. they need to be defeated at the ballot box.

Every time I see a picture of Glenn Beck, I imagine a bloody hole blossoming in the middle of his forehead, just like in the movies. Then I hesitate for three reasons: first, it's not right; second, it's too quick - he should know that he's on his way out; finally, it would ba a damned shame for somebody to go to jail for that.
Murray Supporters Threatened By Man Brandishing A Meat Cleaver And A Knife

So we have a man taking it upon himself to go on a 'progressive hunt' as a result of watching the infoxtrination channel, and now a Democratic Senators supporters threatened by a man brandishing a meat cleaver.
When these people say 'progressive hunter', do they not realize that is the very one and the same 'American citizen hunter'.
Fox News, inciting people to believe this behavior is their only recourse to deal with the angst the propaganda channel creates based on a pack of fabrications and half truths.

me-oww!
Should have known Karoli would have already posted on this. ;-)
Ailles and Murdoch don't make any money of Beck's empty calories. you just know they keep Beck around because he speaks their cause. Beck is one of them. To the point that he is trying to protect the Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Ailles and Murdoch. I'm confident that They are very proud of Beck. Crime is a game to these people. As long as they have the FBI and the DOJ 'in the house' the game will continue.

Beck is the FOX news equivalent of those great bargains in the grocery store circulars every week. The store knows they'll lose money selling that can of green beans for 9 cents. They also know that it's very unlikely that you'll leave the store with just those 9 cent green beans.
As long as Beck continues to spout the nonsense that benefits Murdoch, and pulls in eyeballs that may decide to stick around and watch something that *does* make them money, Murdoch will toss him out there every week.
that Glenn Beck should just be ignored...stop giving him the attention he craves.
Well, that would be fine if he was just on a soapbox on a corner somewhere...but he's not.
He, given a platform & a huge audience by the agenda-focused Fox Network, has used the tried & true scam to his & his handler's advantage...'there's a sucker born every minute'.
These days, there are many of those suckers who are afraid, very afraid...helped along by the criminal & secretive Bush administration, the lazy media who are more concerned about their own air-time than digging for facts & remaining behind the scenes, the bought & paid for politicians whose only agenda is their own, the wealthy who hold themselves up as the saviours of the country, and the biases & prejudices they themselves have grown up with.
Ripe & ready for picking...and Rupert Murdoch, being one very aggressive & clever man with lots of money...has pushed his own agenda, using the ego-centric clown, Glenn Beck, to capture these suckers & give them an 'enemy' to focus all of their fears & frustrations on.
No, Glenn Beck on his own is not dangerous...but with all of these circumstances & opportunities...he needs to be shut down...to save these poor fools from themselves & from harming the country.
He did mentioned the dreaded words that cannot be said by the right.... "social justice".
I saw it right there with those other terrible words government and the common good...off with his head.
Beck is losing sponsors. His show hasn't had a sponsor in England for 8 months.
Beck's show is on Fox News, part of News Corporation, a publicly traded company.
The stockholders are taking a financial hit because he's a pet of Murdoch and Ailes. It may only be pennies, but to the type of a-hole who'd own News Corp stock, a few pennies is enough to ignore safety standards in oil derricks, coal mines, food processing plants and factories that make kids' toys.
Clearly, a responsible organization wouldn't throw good money after bad like this?
Would they, he asked mock-incredulously.
There's fox in England? I did not know.

It isn't working because the cost isn't high enough yet. With the massive war chest behind them, and the money coming in hand over fist from other programs, Fox Noise can continue to have a Loss Leader in Beck because of their agenda.
Democracy is the road to socialism. ~ Karl Marx
I think the Tides Foundation and every other organization somehow assumes Beck cares if somebody is hurt from an attack motivated by his words. He doesn't give a rip. The guy would sell his mother if it got him somewhere. He's a typical sociopath. Don't treat him like a real human with real human feelings...money and power are the only things he cares about. The guy called his radio competitor's wife after she had a miscarriage to mock her and her husband over their tragedy and put it on the air when he was a shock jock.

Think of Beck as you would think of Charles Manson...a sick evil b@stard.

We are dealing with sociopaths here-not human beings-so stop trying to apply empathy to these reptiles by pulling out your hair -saying "how could someone be so evil?" Lefties are more prone to a sense of justice-being empathetic to the pain of others. STOP! Set aside your feelings and see clearly what is happening-We are over run with predators whose only goal is personal power and they will use any means neccessary to get it.This is dinosaur days folks and the dino's want to drive us into a panic where we turn on each other-then half the battle is won.
Excellent post Clara , that is right on .
Glenn Beck is antsing for a civil war. His language is loaded with dog-whistle code aimed at his most unstable disciples. Ignore his disingenuous pleas for non-violence. They are just an attempt to cover himself legally. He is out for blood.
Media Matters has started a petition to News Corp shareholders to renounce Beck's rhetoric. Take a moment to sign it and then tell your friends.
Tempurpedic. I told them they need to stop sponsoring this hate-monger. They replied that they do not endorse his views. I wrote them back and said, yes, you do, because your ad dollars allow him to continue spreading his crap. I never heard from them again.
on how many people they can motivate their followers to off. The winner gets paid in blood money.
...by everyone. Sure, Beck's rhetoric is "completely insane."
http://www.sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/201...
But that doesn't stop him for making others believe his insane rhetoric. I spend time reading comments on Beck's website. Many of Beck's supporters write things that are astonishing in their ignorance, and Beck uses them to promote his show. This is not just hucksterism, although it's that too. Beck is employing his army to help spread his "completely insane" ideas.
I hate to use a phrase of the reactionary crank, Alex Jones; but this is an information "war." I just don't think that the left is acutely aware of this, but when you spend time focused on Beck and his minions it becomes painfully clear that Beck is poisoning the well of political discourse in this country. Violence may or may not be the upshot of Beck's violent rhetoric that he simultaneously tries to tamp down by having his followers sign a pledge of non-violence. What is the upshot of Beck on that Fox platform is vast tracts of misinformation.
As J. S. Mills noted, the antidote for bad speech is more speech; but it does no good if more speech is not heard. Just one tactic in this information war is boycotting Fox "News." Another tactic is the countering of his misinformation with the truth. Before one of Beck's minions gets to your neighbors, friends and relatives -- as directed by Mr. Beck -- please share this URL with everyone on your e-mail list, your blogs and your social networking sites. www.sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com
This "war" is over the facts and the truth. It really is a civil struggle for the facts by the tellers of truth against the "crooks and liars" on the right, Mr. Beck in this case.
"The antidote to bad speech is more speech." ~~J.S. Mill
Hating evil is a normal reaction if you have a conscience and are empathetic to the pain of others. I hate em too-but I won't let that hate distract me from reason. Its the hate that fuels the fire-that ignites action and dissolves away the apathy. Hate is just passion and can be used in a positive way.
Somehow I don't think Beck or Murdoch are going to care .
I hadn't heard of Glen Beck until about 10 minutes ago, so let me get this right - he is on a national TV station, presumably with a national audience (or international - I've just checked our satellite TV channels and we do indeed get Fox News here; something else I've learned today) and he is taken seriously by more than a handful of right wing conspiracy theorists, and seriously enough by some to persuade them to attempt terrorist acts against liberal institutions? How influential is this guy in the US really, outside the lunatic right?
But seriously, he is one of the Dirty Digger's biggest draws, so who knows.
I see the Teabaggers have started to infest the right wing loonies in the UK, like bedbugs. I don't think the Canadians are having them, I'm close to Canada and get their teevee and don't see evidence of it. Their 'No Health Care for Anyone' stance is a non-starter up there.
Maybe if you get FOX 'News' where you are, you'll have a chance to see the world's largest asshole (for now) bloviate in front of his big blackboard of lies. This moron has even started a 'University.'
me-oww!
I'll have to take a look at Fox News - it may be good for a laugh on a wet Sunday afternoon. If the Tea Party are getting into bed with our fascists then so much the better - the EDL are a bunch of racist thugs whose demonstrations are banned, and the BNP are widely regarded as skinheads in suits and ties, thankfully a long way from getting even a single seat in Parliament.
Honestly, if Beck tried to come here I wonder if he would be denied a visa. Under the previous government I think he might. Or possibly arrested.
The comments left on that website make we just want to give up. Fine, folks. Let people like Beck get elected. Let them utterly destroy this country. I mean it. I want to see those idiots destroy this country. Of course, they'll probably STILL find a way to blame liberals.
