You say it best when you say nothing at all
A lot of people seem to be wondering today whether Barack Obama will break his silence over Israel's attack on Gaza. The NY Times devotes a whole article to the question, noting that Team Obama's message discipline is strong and they are sticking to the mantra of "there is only one president at a time." Despite that, there are signs that Obama is broadly sympathetic to Israel - but if he's the more nuanced individual he has claimed to be then he has to realise that the current assault is deeply counter-productive.
Obama could, if he wished, stick to his "one president at a time" - which is only just and correct - while still pressuring the current president to end his hands-off stance on events in Gaza. He could, if he wished, make use of the tame stenographers of the press corps by planting questions to which he could answer "there's only one president at a time" in many, inventive ways.
Consider, for example, that the UK's Gordon Brown has been one of the first Western leaders to break their enabling silence and demand both a ceasefire and access for humanitarian aid to Gaza. Imagine a planted question leading from that.
Reporter: Mr President-Elect, Gordon Brown has called for a ceasefire and access for aid to Gaza. Do you agree the Israelis should now cease their assault?
O: Prime Minister Brown has my greatest respect, he's a strong friend and ally. However, the US only has one President at a time so I can only urge you to ask President Bush that question.
See how it would work? That would put the focus of the American media back on Bush, who has refused to cut short his final vacation to help deal with the crisis.

"there is only one president at a time."
Who's at the helm now?
Who's been at the helm for the last 10 months? (or 8 years for that matter) - we're adrift in a sea of dumbass.
And we're fresh out of wind and oars...lots of ass though.
David Rockefeller??

"...we only have one president at a time."
The one we have at this particular time has been such a NON-STARTER on Isreal/Palestine relations for the last eight years, I think it's only right for Obama to leave Bush twisting in the wind on this one for the nest three weeks. In fact, Obama should hold up a big sign with a picture of Bush on it that sez:
"IT'S HIS FAULT. ASK HIM!"
Because he is owned by bankers and obedient to AIPAC. There I said it and everyone knows it. If you do not believe me just stay tuned.
Explain to me again how Paul himself doesn't espouse the great Jewish conspiracy theory, just some of his followers do...
No conspiracy theory, I am seeing it happen through his words and soon his action...like I said STAY TUNED:)

Abbywood. They certainly have very laudable goals. The only thing lacking is any hint of a policy beyond vague suggestions of diplomacy. Exactly what diplomatic initiatives are they proposing? I can't find any.

Incoming Presidents don't step on the sitting Presidents toes.
Even if the current sitting President is an imbecile.
That's just the way it works.
Yeah, I know. If ever there was a time, this is it.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
a honey baked ham and a Merry Christmas card. They arrived a day late, just in time for the war. His gesture may have been mis-understood.
Just noticed great picture choice for Obama. Subtle. I like it.
Ya, I'm sure he'll be neutral given that pic.
I wonder why Barak didn't get his picture taken in front of a Palestinian flag?
Oh that's right, they don't have very much MONEY. Silly me sometimes I have trouble understanding what this conflict is all about.
Various reasons like no political will in the US for WW3, US and Israel do not want to upset the Russians or the Chinese, so Israel has to make do with second best for their 'be tough on Arabs week', Gaza won the lottery, perfect choice as they are fish in a barrel with a few hand weapons and some fireworks for defense. And theres an election coming up in a couple of months.
Gaza is aprox 20 by 5 miles in size, 1.5 miliion people crammed into there.
They can be hit by artillery, tanks and 0.50cal sniper fire from Israel, gunfire from Israeli ships, and unlimited aerial bombardments.
Theres not a square yard in Gaza that cannot be targeted by Israeli weapons.
Literally fish in a barrel.
And when you look at Israel on the map, they are pretty small themselves, surrounded on all sides by not friendly neighbours.
Anybody with a brain or a slight knowledge of history knows that in situations like this, talking to your adversary and some form of agreement with prob a federal system, is the only logical outcome which could stop the endless violence.
Israel (and the Palestinians) have three choices, genocide and exodus, endless hostility, or talks agreements and a permanent peace deal.
One of these men is supposed to be making pronouncements about the Israeli offensive in Gaza and--no matter which side he prefers--taking concrete steps to ameliorate the suffering of the Palestinians and ensuring that the rocket attacks are stopped. One of these men has his hands on the wheel of the American Ship of State.
That man is on vacation.
And you're sweating the guy who is supposed to be on vacation?
George Bush has never interceded when the Israelis have decided that military action was necessary. As a matter of fact, the Israeli government is probably taking advantage of the fact that the incumbent has a track record of letting it have free rein in these matters.
All Obama could do now by opening his mouth is to make his own situation with Israel, the Bush government, and--possibly--the Palestinians worse (not to mention diminishing his stature on the world stage before he's even taken the oath of office).
Bad public relations and bad statecraft for Obama. He'll own this problem soon enough.
Already dealt with this problem. He sold Israel more ammunitions.

No surprise that Chimp wont interrupt his vacation to deal with the Gaza problem. He needs the rest. Hes still trying to figure out how to toss a blanket pardon over every illegal thing his criminal ass has done for the last 8 years. I hope the Dems took my advice and have a raftfull of charges to start filing AFTER his pardon goes away. Maybe he will preempt any charges too. Use some of that fancy Texas lawyer talk. That aside, he really needs the down time. Its hard work fucking up everything one touches.
His pardons expire?
Bush's mess will be Obama's soon enough.
In the mean time, how about Georgie calling for a ceasefire? Oh never mind, maybe he can sell some more arms to Israel to replace the ones fired recently before he leaves office...

What would bush do anyway? He's fucked everything up he's touched so far. Anything he would contribute would have to be undone by another sane leader who's not a psychopath.
What a crikey statement, offering up an apology of sorts when one only has to look at his backing for the last decade-plus (pritzkers and bronfmans, among other zioni$t creep families). I'm an obama fan, but realize he's going to do no different than any president since JFK and Ike. The rest've all been isarel-firsters, both bush's, reagan.
Some great "change" here ---- can't he even offer up some sort of statement, or will his zioni$t backers trench him if he does?
What sad g.d. country we live in, beholden to the biggest criminal entity on either side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Aides to President-elect Barack Obama said Rice and her likely successor, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, had been in contact, and that Obama would discuss the situation with Clinton and James Jones, his incoming national security adviser.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and other lawmakers also expressed support for Israel's right to defend its citizens against rocket attacks from Hamas.
"As President-elect Obama has made clear time and again, no country should be forced to tolerate attacks on its people," said Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, D-N.J. "Hamas is abusing the people of Gaza by using their homes as a base for terror operations. The world should no longer tolerate a terrorist government in the Gaza Strip."

Maybe not Obama speaking, but it is his representatives/supporters. The same story earlier in the day had words from Obama in the story. Now they are gone.
The British Navy has had since the late 70s compact sized Seawolf missiles, they can literally take artillery shells out in mid flight.
Front on impact.
Maybe Israel should go talk to Gordon Brown and buy some of these, and make them under license. And put some around Gaza to take down the rockets when they fly.
The US and Israel might not like it, but its the truth.
Elected by them in supposedly fair monitored elections.
Didnt the UN and the EU recognize Hamas !?
which Fatah/PLO accepted. Do a little research on the issue of territory. TWO states were created in 1948. Jordan took the West Bank and Egypt, Gaza in the War of '49. Egypt and the UNWRA created the "Stateless" Palestinean. IOW, until 1967, when Israel WON the West Bank of Jordan and Gaza, Egypt, no one gave a rat's ass about the Palestinean people. No. one. Not even their Arab "brothers". They still don't.
Arafat walked away from the Camp David Accords. and Hamas walked away from the Mecca Accords because they just couldn't accept the existence of Israel as Fatah was able to do. Sure, it's not all sweetness and light on the West Bank, but at least there is a semblance of calm.
Now is the time for both Israeli and Palestinian mothers to just say "NO". No more children dying, and no more Arab "Martyr's Money". But, I believe peace is too frightening a prospect for Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran. After all, if there are no more civilian corpse to desecrate by placing their images on the web, a huge propaganda machine is lost.
The Palestinian people lose no matter what.
until then, he can't say or do a thing without looking like a usurper to the right.

with logic only Laura Bush (or maybe Doug Adams) could follow, the fact that Bush is failing to do anything doesn't mean it's a failure on the part of the Bush administration, it's just the lack of action on the part of the Bush administration.

try something that has never been done before? I read this on another blog, but it makes sense when you think about it. FORCE THEM TO MAKE PEACE. How? Well, this hasn't been tried.
Get tough with Israel.
Stop excusing interest on their loans.
Bring some economic pressure to bear, to get them to start acting like what they pretend to be, a civilized western democracy.
It is more logical to assume that when W goes on a vacation this also means that he’s on an alcoholic binge. And as everyone knows, it’s not prudent to be making executive decisions in a drunken stupor.

The money trail leads to the doors of AIPAC who dictates the silence from Obama. This is not a Jewish conspiracy - it is an advertised fact. Hence, American Israel PAC. The nation is a final colony of Europe and now years after the end of the Soviet Union, still commands a place in Western policy and popular political thought as a bastion of civilization against a world of swarthy savages romping around on camels. This experiment in Western nationalism fights so hard as it is a regime history is passing by - yet the money to support this relic continues to dominate our country. The only question we should be asking is, why our money? Obama would do the same were this fifty years ago when the Irish of this nation were sending money over to the IRA. Obama cannot change everything. We can ask only that we work hard to change at home, and ask of all the blood money the government gets from our taxes, can we afford this?
Nothing Obama says is going to influence Bush. Bush is a true believer. And true believers believe that whoever defends Israel is going to be blessed.
Defending Ishmael is a path that leads straight to hell. The fact that there are innocent civilians being starved and bombed by Israel is just gods mysterious way.
I'm just not sure which god.

To all of you who want PE Obama to say something, do something, whatever, call your local news stations and the national talking-heads gasbag shows to insist that instead of talking about the PE eating ice cream on the beach, call the PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH to task for hiding out in TX.
OBAMA IS NOT THE PRESIDENT. GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE PREDIDENT. If you don't know the obligations of the president vs the president-elect, the learn to use the google.
The very people who want the man who is not the president to do something or say something will be very same people who will be belly-aching about how Obama is usurping the man who president should PE Obama take a position. IT IS NOT HIS JOB TO TAKE A POSITION.
THE U.S. HAS A SITTING PRESIDENT. His name is George W. Bush and the fact that he is hidding out in Texas in not Obama's concern.
Just because American schools no longer teach the subjects Government and Civics is no excuse for so many people to not have learned, in 2008, how the government works.

i dont think thiers any mystery as to obummers views on the isralies vs the palistinians , hes allready stated several times on cnn that he supports anything the isralies care to do unconditionaly i might add, send over the jet fighters sure thing use bunker busters hey why not, fire up them m1 abram tanks hey let er ripp, obummers in for the whole nine yards, as long as his daughters are safe , you bet!

ignorant? let me get this straight my spellings your problem sweety? i just typed what obummer has said,on the news about his complete support of israel, i dont give a flying fluck what obummer does , why ? because hes a tool, and a fool, hes owned by the corporations and the zionests, perhaps youd better care less about how a person spells and more about your leaders intentions ,the bastard sold us out on fisa , the patriot act and voted for everything bush wanted ,as for him not being president yet , wise up clown hes allready told you hes going to be a war president . hes a warmonger on afganistan and you my dear are a war monger enabler!ta! ta!
Can there be any doubt that Israel is an unapologetic enemy to the world? This slime has imprisoned over a million people and is bombing them. How's that? If they leave, either the chosen ones or their Egyptian tools will shoot them. Stay and enjoy the bombings. Hell, if its not Jewish, life simply doesn't count.
Latest body count I've read: three Israeli dead and more than a dozen injured; hundreds of Palestinians dead and thousands injured.
But hey, the chosen people of God are all that matter. The rest of the world just exist to die for the Greater Glory of Israel.
For a false, monstrous God dependent for its ability and courage on an ill-informed U.S. benefactor.
Forget about reducing or eliminating aid to these thugs. It's time to start hanging some Neo-Con war criminals.
Query: Do Israeli pilots bombing helpless civilians fly so low so they can be sure of their kill? Or is it just to enjoy the screams?
Corruption favors the wealthy.
just for being there I have to call you out on this
"See how it would work? That would put the focus of the American media back on Bush, who has refused to cut short his final vacation to help deal with the crisis."
The Bush Adminstration never intended to be peace brokers. All anyone needs to do who is reading this is google. Look up the Chigago School and Straussian theory and extrapolate this crap from Reagan to Bush II.
It's not a "Jewish" thing. It's not a "Christian" thing.
It's a fucking money thing. And oh, has it failed.
Big Business and Congress's strangely over-friendly buddy Benjamin Netenyahu; who is more than likely going to be elected as front man for the bizarre new Israeli bloodiness.
I want Israel to survive.
Does the Likud party?
THE AMERICAN MEDIA IS RESPONSIPLE FOR NO ONE IN THIS COUNTRY HAVING A FUCKING CLUE ABOUT THE ISRALI/PALESTINIAN CONFLAGRATION.
I was wondering...who owns the media? Is it regulated? There must be some kind of major manopoly of some sort...because without the internet I wouldn't be able to read the foreign news papers which are overwhelmingly shocked to shit over the Israeli...what shall we call it? Spitball launching just for the sake of nicety?
I was wondering..I have heard there were massive civilian casualties... overwhelmingly so on one side compared with the other?
Has anyone heard which side is dying like this? I heard those horrible Palestianians were making bottle rockets and their horrible children throw stones. But I also heard that Israel has enough NUCLEAR WEAPONS to blow up the middle east and that if small children throw rocks at them that Israeli soldiers actually kill people in response! Could this be true? David and Goliath was one of my favorite bible stories.
I root for David. Goliath is an asshole.
Hamas was created in 1987 by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi and Mohammad Taha of the Palestinian wing of the Muslim Brotherhood at the beginning of the First Intifada.
You seem too know the bible, according to your closing statement? "David and Goliath was one of my favorite bible stories."
Are you familiar with Hamas's bible?

But as Sunnis, they do not view the US as an enemy to be destroyed. Rather, common Palestinians are frustrated that the US never sees things from their perspective or cares about their lives. Hamas was founded party due to the frustration that Arafat and the PLO were making the transition from terrorist group to non-violent political party. Hamas was founded in 1987 and carried out their first suicide bombing in Tel Aviv in 1994. They are ruthless and vicious, but we need to separate them from non-violent Palestinians who have been in a dark corner for decades. They live in occupied territory but have no representation in Israeli parliament (nor do non-Orthodox Jewish Israelis for that matter). Only a few of them can participate in Israel's economy. They had their land taken from them. They have no viable local economy. Jordan won't accept them as immigrants. Nor will other friendly Muslim nations. Etc. Etc.
Israel/Bush have had this plan for a long time. Israel was waiting to see if McCain/Palin got in so they could add more bombs and get more support from other countries. As Lieberman said Israel will finish Palestine. Then Obama won and with only 23 days left to the Bush term Israel figured if they kill many woman/children one of the Middle Eastern countries will step in to help Palestine. Then Israel can call Speaker Pelosi to send American soldiers to help Israel in their invasion of Palestine. Isreal's furture wannabe PM said she wants to wipe Palestine off the map. With the pictured being shown over sees Israel is doing a great job at killing. The US wont show the pictures their to horrorable to see and it's better that Americans not know how the Palestine people are being murdered. Yes one Jewish man was killed as Irsael President said all the Palestine people will pay for the death of that one man. Now he didn't say any thing about the hundreds of people Israel killed when they bombed Syria. I guess a Jewish life is worth more then any other person's life. Let's hope God will help the Palestine people like He did with Hezbollah when Israel bombed them with US weapons.
"Israel figured if they kill many woman/children one of the Middle Eastern countries will step in to help Palestine." Can you name a middle eastern country that might do this? I don't think you understand the region very well if you think this might happen. The PEOPLE of the middle east support the Palesinians but the governments do not. I can guarantee you Iran would never be stupid enough to intervene to stop the killing in Gaza because they know that if they do that Israel and the US (as soon to be secretary of state Ms. Clinton has warned) would wipe them off the map. As for other countries such as Egypt and the Saudis not only would they not help the Palestinians but in fact they were almost certainly made aware this was going to happen and at least as far as Egypt goes they are supporting Israel (e.g. by cooperating with their blockade of Gaza).
Who has a legal army? Israel or Palestine?
I would assume both?
NOT
The American's who fought in the Revolutionary War should well understand this.
But I believe those folks are dead and our school system fails on such massive levels concerning civics and history that well..

Hamas was created in 1987 by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi and Mohammad Taha of the Palestinian wing of the Muslim Brotherhood at the beginning of the First Intifada.
The Israelis promoted Hamas as an antidote to Fateh and Arafat. They thought to manipulate one against the other and create chaos in the opposition which opposed Israeli colonization and ethnic cleansing in Palestine.
"The Israelis promoted Hamas as an antidote to Fateh and Arafat" I've heard this as well but haven't found much supporting evidence. Can you link to some articles or mention some books that support it? thanks
Please bear with me. Your saying Israel promoted Hamas? Isn't Hamas more radical then the Fateh ideologue? At their core, don't they both have a certain disdain for Israelis existence in that terri-tory? (pun intended) I can't understand why they would promote Hamas as you say.
The Hamas has taken the path of avoiding causing harm to Zionist interests outside of Palestine, not from weakness or lack of ability to do so, but because Hamas does not wish for further fronts to be opened against it around the world.
[Sheikh A. Yassin]
Hamas' battle is against the Zionist occupation in the Palestinian land. Hamas has no desire to change its battlefield.

PS. Do you think Arafat was a puppet/tool? Is or was The "Fatah movement" worse in your opinion? Is Hamas lighting off these bottle rockets being lobbed into Israel, if so why? Thanks for your input.
Study the symptoms not the virus...
"I can't understand why they would promote Hamas as you say." I don't know whether its true that Israel initially sponsored Hamas but it wouldn't be all that unusual if it were true. If we agree that Israel and the US often take the same strategy in their foreign policy we can use the US as a model. The US has often helped to start groups that later turn out to be mortal enemies. Examples: the CIA gave money to Castro before he seized power, the CIA gave money to the Islamic extremists in Afghanistan and elsewhere that turned into Al Queda. The reasons I've heard (I've just heard this on Blogs and haven't been able to find any hard data that support it) that Mossad sponsored Hamas was that they wanted to discredit the Palesinian cause and tear support away from Arafat with a more hard line movement. Essentially that Arafat was being too reasonable and Mossad wanted a Palestinian force that would be more easy to demonize.
Regarding "was Arafat a puppet" IMHO you can't just answer such a question with yes or no. I think he was in an impossible situation but I also think at times he put his own power ahead of the needs of the Palestinians.
I think I understand the premise? Was it a divide and conquer type move aimed at instigating the Palestinian's in an attempt to gain world support? A provocateur type action?
Do you think they are following this Agreement? http://www.mideastweb.org/mandate.htm
I not too sure things can ever be resolved with the mindsets of the area. Thanks for your time.

There's only one President at a time = I listen to my Generals and I will never surrender.
Leaders are suppose to be leaders, did Ghandi keep silent when he saw evil? Obama is proving he is just a tool of the power elite. You would have to be living in a cave not to know what's been being set-up in the I/P conflict, this didn't happen overnight. Early in Barack's campaign he sought a more even-handed approach to the I/P conflict and was quickly "corrected" by his handlers. With people like Biden, Clinton, Emanuel and Warren surrounding Obama you're just going to get a re-mix of Bush, but with a younger, hipper beat that will sound a little more mainstream.
How long do you keep silent? 20+ days = 1,500 more dead Gazan's (but of course they're all Hamas adults, right?).
"See how it would work? That would put the focus of the American media back on Bush, who has refused to cut short his final vacation to help deal with the crisis."
What is happening in Gaza is awful but what makes you think Bush ending his vacation and getting involved would help as opposed to make things even worse?
Since the REAL issue is why aren't more so-called "Leaders" condemning the indiscriminate slaughter of children, I would definitely like to hear Michelle Obama go off on that subject.
Laura Bush can go fuck W. sideways with her robotic self, she's a bigger hypocrite than any of em, where's her outrage at the slaughter of children? She was a Librarian? hah -- she's a LIAR.
And all of the fat-asses who sit in church on Sunday while this shit continues, do they read the verse where Jesus says whatsoever you do unto the children, you do to me? Merry F-ing Christmas and Happy New Year my arse!
"Consider, for example, that the UK's Gordon Brown has been one of the first Western leaders to break their enabling silence and demand both a ceasefire and access for humanitarian aid to Gaza."
Where does he, or anybody else, get off DEMANDING anything? The UK, The USA, etc., should learn to keep their big noses out of other countries' affairs. The Hamas thugs have been provoking Israel for years, and nobody did anything. Play with fire, eventually you get burned.
now you take lebanon for instence, israel sends a few of thier mossad across lebanons borders for a body snatch looking for more lebonese to torture for information, they get caught with thier grubby hands in somebody elses cookie jar get a few mossad killed and two captured , then they start a war over thier agessive act, use american made fighter bomber jets to destroy lebanons infrastructure and many of its civillians men women and children, then they send in thier tanks and soldiers and israel starts getting it back with thier mercinarys getting killed , then israel is so chickenshit they withdraw because they can kill people from the air and its ok but lose a few isralie troops and they shit in thier pants, then we send that gap tooth bitch rice over thier and offer millions of bucks to the lebanese for the deaths israel caused , then this bitch goes to israel and gives them new bombs and weapons to replenish israels expended ammunitions , screw these people , the palistinians are just as expendable to america as the lebanese were!
If Obama were to try to advise the current administration, can you imagine all the wingnuts coming out spewing their hate? I'm thinking they'd be saying something to the effect of, "See? He's not even sworn in, but he's trying to take over already." etc., etc. Nothing anyone can do right now can calm this mess. Obama is better off to just let this administration's time expire, and then he can go into office with full-power and try to figure this out. Our country is so divided these days that we cannot compare our situation with those of other democracies.

I don't see how defending your country against 7 years of rocket attacks deliberately aimed at your civilians, followed by an overtly broken truce by the same people who have been firing the rockets, is "deeply counter-productive." Today there are reports that Hamas is willing to go back to the truce. If that happens, then the attacks on Hamas will have been deeply productive indeed.
I was hopeful, but it looks like Obama is a zionist whore just like madam speaker, except she has to pay people to fuck her. CEO,citizens, eyes, open.
