Who was the biggest wingnut of 2008?
Everybody's been compiling their Top 10 lists of 2008. We've decided to compile a list of the biggest right-wing nutcases of the year -- which, admittedly, could be a very long list indeed.
I consulted the C&L staff, and indeed there was not shortage of suggestions. The competition was fierce, but we finally pared it down to the list on the poll below.
Some absent names were especially notable -- George W. Bush and John Sydney McCain in particular. But the former just became increasingly irrelevant, and the latter was actually outdone by his surrounding cast of right-wing nutcases.
Vote today! We'll gather the data and announce the winner on New Year's Day.

Palin and Puff the Magic Plumber are indicitive of what the wingnuts want the GOP to be. So it really has to be one of the two. Palin will continue her political ambitions and KC the Sunshine Plumber will try to become a pundit of some kind.
But in reality it's probably Hannity or Rush that deserves the prize.

There are some noticeable citizens of Wingnutopia who are conspiculously absent from the roster: Michelle "Rachael Ray is Wearing Terrorist Scarves" Malkin, and Michael "The Gay Mafia is After Me" Savage.
I have to admit, though, I can't wait to see Joe The Plumber sing a duet with Sean Hannity or Charlie Daniels during one of next summer's Freedom Concerts and Right-Wing Propaganda Fests!

It's impossible to choose the worst among that list. I see them all herding together like bedbugs, overlapping so much it's hard to distinguish one from the other. I don't know how you managed to cull out the ones you did.
Sarah Palin certainly wins the Minnesota "Oh, for dumb!" award.
Mike Huckabee wins the Weightwatcher's award for most weight lost.
Lou Dobbs wins the "What in the world" award.
Rush Limbaugh wins Les Nessman's Golden Sow award for his auspicious resemblence.
Bill Kristol wins the worst NY-Times-columnist-ever award.
Michelle Bachmann wins the Joe McCarthy-communist-under-every-woodpile award.
Pastor John Hagee wins the Hitler Youth award and a gold belt buckle.
Sean Hannity wins the Best Hair and Whiney Voice award, a pretty putzy honor, if you ask me.
Bill O'Reilly wins the Terrible-at-Seduction and Excellent at Obscenity award.

So I'll cast my vote for Sean Hannity since his awards to date have not earned him any interesting mojo. Gotta' bring his heft up to the same level as the rest.
Kristol methed up all year. Palin and Joe were just flashes in the pan. Didn't even play for more than half a season.

It has to be Palin, all the rest have been around for awhile and I have gotten used to their wingnuttery, but Palin was a freash breath of air for the people that enjoy watching car wrecks that envolve the right wing. Speaking in tounges, the John Birch society, the hillbilly herion dealing inlaws and her complete lack of knowledge about them, Abstinence while her daughter is unwed and a teenager, oh good lord it just coming with this lady. Some of the others on the list are not true believers in what they say, they get a good paycheck for spouting what they say(Hannity, Rush, Billo, Dobbs) and just read the talking points that they are handed. Palin is a true believer and that is what makes her the winner.
So many wingnuts; so little time to select. I agree with most on the list, although JTP probably wouldn't be on mine. It drove me nuts (and still does) every time I heard his name and saw him say something, but I think he's small fry in relation to the others, who are professional wingnuts.
I picked Michelle Bachmann....her interview with Chris Matthews caused me to donate a small amount to her opponent in the election.....first time EVER I did something like that. Too bad the witch won her election.
How about the Catholic and Mormon churches for actively and illegally trying to take peoples rights away, condemning people for voting for Obama, etc...
that isn't 'crooky' so much as it is further living proof that organized religion is a bunch of bunk that doesn't have the tiniest little thing to do with actually following the teachings they claim to revere.

I'm not sure I think she may just be a cynical politician, with right-wing roots... "Promise them anything but give them Arpege by Lanvan." As the ads used to say.
On the other hand, Michelle Bachmann is clinically insane.
Sarah Palin has GREAT charisma, she's going to be around in politics or on TV, whether we like it or not. Bachmann is a creep. With appropriate public attention paid to her sleazy, idiotic and right-wing-psychotic behavior, we can make her go away.

Even with the short list you've given here, I can't decide on just one. 2008 was a banner year for voluntary stupidity.

That's why I voted for Billy boy. By definition, a "wingnut" is one who sticks to the party ideology, regardless of reality. And Kristol certainly stuck to the neo-con theology, with nary a waver.
The rest? They had their moments of wingnuttery, but, compared to the Kristol-meth, they are ALL amateurs.

For me they all are nuts, but I voted for Palin because if McCain had won, she probably would have bumped off McCain and she would have become the president. I shudder just writing that.
There are so many deserving candidates and each of them outshines the others in their own inimitable way. Perhaps there should be various classifications of the award. For example, I would nominate JTP for "Most Pathetic Wingnut", and Bill Kristol for "Myopic Visionary Wingnut", Hannity for "Most Factually Challanged", Hagee for "Most Bigoted Wingnut", O'Reilly for "Most Falafeled", Sarah for "Most Opportunistic, you betcha", Huckabee for "Most Potentially Dangerous Wingnut", and Rush Limpballs as "Biggest Blowhard".

can touch Palin in this competition. the wingnuttia keeps growing and growing. she has every single wingnut trait, EVERY one, even the close ties to nasty drug-dealing now with her soon to be son in law's mom going away to the clink for making meth in her kitchen or whatever. and really, does anyone believe that the Palin family could be reasonably going to this guy's house and NOT notice somehow that she's cooking up and selling meth? I don't believe it for a second. all of these people seemed this whole time to be living above their actual means, and I think we can now safely guess why. they've been making and selling drugs this whole time!
but that's only part of the wingnuttia. its just a fitting extra dose at the end of the year to clinch the nomination for the wingnut who deserves it most. and this year, there is nobody more winged or more nutty than Sarah Palin.

I chose Hannity. Now let me explain why. This year he went beyond his usual wingnuttery. From his absurd Hannity's America to his passionate retelling of every dirty wingnut falsehood about Barack Obama, Hannity went beyond what any other propagandist did. Palin and Joe might have done damage on the campaign trail, but it was Hannity that backed up every one of their moves and injected even more hatred into the public discourse. And, he did this all from the comfort of a TV screen or radio making his hatred readily accessible to millions. This year he transcended the O'Reilys and Limbaughs and created a new level (or low) of revulsion and divisiveness. When he sank to new lows, our whole country sank with it along with the national discourse.
I agree that every one of these people deserves the top banana, but Hannity deserves it just a bit more.
I voted Hannity too. Although I gave up listening to him. (I was convinced listening to him was right because you're supposed to keep your enemies close). A few accidental listenings this election season showed him to be even nuttier than ever. TV I can't even stand the sight of him. Palin was my next choice.
Yeah, I went with Hannity as well. The way he spews the hate and the lies and they way he "interviewed" Palin by actually answering the "questions" while asking them (as stupid as the "questions" were). But his spewing of hate and lies with every sentience he utters did it for me. It was a very difficult choice though.
No one lies with so much emotion as he has.

To me, a wingnut is someone with nutty ideas who's hopelessly unaware of their nuttiness. That would be Michelle Bachman. Sarah Palin espouses wingnut ideas, but they're meant to be wingnut bait; she herself is a just cynical politician. I think it was a failure to leave off John Bolton. When I think of this category I think of people who not only have an opinion greatly different than my own but beyond that a believe system that is contradicted by reality and an inability to comprehend that reality. Not only does John Bolton fit this mold but he is able to act on those beliefs and was able to influence the outcome of events. John Gibson is as equally out in la la land as Bolton and would be a candidate for this recognition as well but the difference is that Gibson was not in a position to directly influence the outcome of events as was Bolton. It just means that someone put this nut job in a position of power which amplified the wing nuttyness of this character.
For me, it had to be Palin, just because avoiding her perky hatespeech and noxious inanity was impossible. It was everywhere.
By contrast, it's pretty easy to ignore Hannity & O'Reilly if, like me, you never watch FOX. Ditto Limbaugh & Dodds, and to a lesser degree Bill Kristol. (I cancelled my subscription to NYT over Kristol's column, but many progressive blogs/sites report on his entirely predictable idiocy with obsessive regularity. Plus, for reasons I can never quite fathom, John Stewart likes having him as a guest.)
Nonetheless, even the unctuous smugness of the toxic dwarf Kristol, was a mere dripping faucet, compared to the ubiquitous tsunami of hokey wingnuttery, the avalanche of sheer boneheaded vapidity unleashed by the arrival of You Betcha Barbie. As a veritable vortex of stupid, she gets my vote.

Although I admit the competition for this dubious distinction is very keen, Michele Bachmann deserves the dishonor, not simply because she is a right-wing nut of the lowest order but also because she is actually nuts. While the competition is keen, these competitors are not. The distinct stench of Bachmann's insanity stands out, even from this pile of putrefaction. This would be an embarrassing group for anyone to be associated with, still Bachmann wins for her unequivocal decent into the dark world of McCarthyist paranoid public stupidity enhanced by her delusional denial of statements that the whole country saw live on 'Hardball' then over&over on YouTube. She wins for insulting the intelligence of the American people.
She also deserves to win so that public focus on this repulsive woman's malicious insanity drives the "Censure Michelle Bachmann" movement in congress.
PS. The folks at DumpMicheleBachman.org deserve a world of thanks for conscientiously documenting the litany of lunacy that is MB's political career. Without them, I would not understand the depths of her nuttiness or the full extent of her cruelty and stupidity. If it had not been for them, I might have written in "Ann Coulter."
