David Gregory, PR Hack and Establishment Cheerleader
Why oh why can't we have a better press corpse? Glenn Greenwald:
Indeed. Perish the thought that a reporter should point out when government officials are making "bogus" claims and are lying a country into a war. That is "not their role," says the New Tim Russert (and, unsurprisingly, the Old Tim Russert wholeheartedly agreed). I don't know whether Gregory's public advocacy for a meek and polite press corps that would never be so rude as to point out when government leaders are lying is what sealed the deal for his new promotion to Meet the Press -- a show which centrally depends on having powerful politicians know that they can come on and, as Dick Cheney's top communications aide put it, "control the message." But I'm quite sure that it didn't hurt.
To see what Cheney aide Cathie Martin meant when she explained that Cheney knew he could go on Meet the Press and "control the message" -- and to see in action David Gregory's model of sycophantic, unchallenging "journalism" -- one could do no better than to examine Gregory's embarrassingly deferential "interview" yesterday with Israel's Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni. It's a perfect template for how our American press corps (with some rare exceptions) functions.
Whatever one's views are on Israel's attack on Gaza -- pro, con or otherwise -- there's no denying that it's an extremely controversial matter -- at least it is in the world that exists outside of mainstream American political discourse. Even within Israel, there are scathing criticisms of what the Israeli Government is doing -- on both strategic and moral grounds. Yet none of those objections made their way into David Gregory's interview of Livni. He didn't present her with a single argument against the Israeli attack. He didn't challenge a single word she uttered. He was even more sycophantic with her than the average American journalist is with the average American political leader.
[...] There are good reasons why the media's reverent 2003 treatment of Bush matches its 2008 deference to Israeli claims. In 2003, claims about Iraq from the Bush administration -- just like claims from Israel now -- were not aggressively challenged or disputed in good company; their pronouncements were mandated orthodoxy, pieties of the highest order. And the one thing our media stars are good at doing -- what, above all else, they're programmed to do -- is to amplify and pay homage to prevailing establishment pieties. To do otherwise, as Gregory revealingly explained, "is not their role."
While it's true that blogs are dependent upon the mainstream media to an extent, it's because the media's hackery is so widespread, so consistent that consumers need us to explain exactly why they're so full of crap. (I mean, we do reward people who get it right by regularly linking to them, thus showing blog readers just who gets our respect.)
The members of the press corpse don't seem to realize that no matter who signs their paychecks, they have a moral obligation to serve as a check on government. The last eight years have proven they don't.

I have heard David Gregory allow numerous individuals to repeat unsubstantiated claims about Iran and have heard Gregory do the same. Specifically about Iran "having" nuclear weapons and alleged statements by the Iranian President.
Gregory is the Israeli Lobbies and the Bush administrations dream boy.

Joe Sixpack doesn't watch MTP. Sunday morning is monster truck time.
Gregory has a job, to manufacture consent and opinion. His strong

him look "mavericky". He is a TOOL. His corporate overclass position
is sealed. He can now say ANYTHING and he will be believed...anything
his masters have approved for him to say.
Watching monster truck pulls is probably more informative than MTP. I wouldn't know, that's prime sleeping time for me.

Gregory: About Iran, will you rule out the potential for military action against Iran if it continues to stonewall the international community about the existence of its nuclear weapons program?
Bush: I hope we can solve it diplomatically, but I will never take any option off the table.

Obama should appoint Helen Thomas as WH presser. She could answer her own questions with TRUE answers...I can dream.
All during the primary, anytime I heard Gregory bloviating on MSNBC, it was the samething:
"Why can't Obama connect with Hillary's blue collar supporters?"
Or,
"Obama just can't connect with Reagan Democrats."
Even after the primary was decided and Obama was the nominee, Gregory still pushed this notion that Obama couldn't connect with working class Americans. It wasn't until the GE that he stopped running this tape.
Tim Russert must be rolling over in his grave about now!
Russert was no better.
I'm glad that Gregory didn't have Walter Cronkite's job on the 1960's because that weak imbecile would be pressing on for complete victory no matter how unjust the cause was. He would have been too intimidated and cowardly to take an affirmative stand for what was right. And we would probably would have lost twice as many people because of their lame maintain the status quo philosophy dictacted to them by their corporate sith lords.
These quacks are just there to draw a big salary and be a puppet for Corporate America and their failed Neocon philosophy. Gregory and his weakling syncophants insult and degrade the true greats of their profession like Edward Murrow and Walter Cronkite who valued truth and integrity above being a cowardly stenographer for their corrupt overlords.

to get invited there, you have to be "on the team."
We all know what's going on NOW, but does anyone have a sense of when the media roll-over began in earnest? There is a tie with corporatism that underlies this phenomenon today, but when did it begin, this hand-in-hand excusing of the government's lying? Has it been for only the last eight years, or was the media overtly in the pockets of the corporations and the government before then?
I know there's no definitive line -- there have always been conservative- and liberal-leaning factions in the media, but that isn't the same as supporting goverment lies. The truth is that I don't remember a single thing about FoxNews before GW was elected, so it SEEMS that what we're talking about began with the election of Bush. May or may not be true.
Any ideas?
When and where is the root of the problem?
But, when the White House press corp accepted a male-whore hack as one of their own, I knew we were in BIG trouble.

Reagan, for the young'uns among ya, started his TV career as a flack for General Electric, which ended up owning NBC. Jack Welch put Reagan in the presidency, where he had a tame NBC and Hollywood PR machine to keep him looking like the aging movie star, write his scripts, and probably pay off the dissenters with media-event privileges.
Bush tapped into the same machine, through relatives of '20s filmland power Francis X. Bush(man) who moved into media under his auspices, and through the heroin network in music.
The Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of the press, and unfortunately that includes the freedom to be asskissers, cowards, and PR flacks.
The great fourth estate has a chance to redeem itself without losing their jobs.
The quality of the reporting won't change though, just the negativity.
That was when they no longer pursued the story, rather they pursued ratings and advert dollars. I worked in the news biz for close to 6 years, and it was pure poison!
Is this a typo or an official new term of derogation for the MSM?

Zombies noveau.
In the sixties when I was teenager I actually thought they were reasonably musical. They might have done better without the name Zombies.
My real preferences then were the likes of John Coltrane on one end and Krzyztof Penderecki on the other.
Here is Anne Sophie Mutter the great goddess of the violin playing his second violin concerto from the late '90s.
I have his first Violin Concerto, I attempt to play it but it is very difficult.
The first Concerto from 1976 is much more abstract though it was the first work of his to return to earth after the likes of the Auschwitz Oratorio and Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima.
The latter work takes a serious amount of musicology to understand on one level.
On another level, in the sense of terror that it evokes, for the enormous hideous crime that our country committed against the Japanese at Hiroshima, it is much easier to understand.
Penderecki's Threnody should be the theme song for the Modern Press Corpse.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
Yes indeed! And some Schnittke, Lutoslawski and a Bartok to go...
And Dolphy, Mingus and Ornette Coleman.
Like to see some of that on Late Nite Music!
...while I understand that the Threnody is meant to evoke great
emotion about the horror of the A-bombs, I think it would be great to use it at high decibels to terrorize Cheney and Bush while they sit chained in their cells in Gitmo.

No wonder Tzipi Livni went to talk to Gregory. She wouldn't have the balls to go talk to Rachel Maddow.
I know that Gregory reads these comments so I will say that a couple years ago he seemed like he might be an alright reporter when he was working the White House press room and Scotty McCullen was there. Then Gregory got his own show and it has been ass kissing and brown nosing ever since. It must be working for him since he got the MTP job but I think he has let down the country by kissing ass. Rachel Maddow is a good example of good journalism. Smart, tough questions and not afraid to ask what needs to be asked. Olbermann is also not scared to do what is correct. Maybe Gregory is keeping the door open for Fox News when NBC has had enough. It is really sad because he had potential.
Just like when Brokaw made up that poll information when he was doing meet the press a couple months ago I will never trust him again!
I just gotta know if this was some kind of protest.

That's all it is.
Even forty years ago during the attempted takeover of Vietnam they were propagandizing.
They only changed their tune (a little) after the Tet offensive; that was only an effort to retain their credibility.
As long as the corporations that make the arms also own the media, it's not going to get any better.
The media's incestuous relationship with Corporate America with really needs to end if we really want to have an effective media in the US. But I don't look for that to happen any day soon because these corporate hacks are control freaks that are terrified of the truth.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."
Robert F. Kennedy
This is why the media seems so bizarre anymore IMHO.
Twenty years ago there was no netroots to challenge the "media."
So they created a reality where Ronny Reagan single-handedly defeated the commies and deregulation would set us free.
Who was to question but a few printed periodicals - and that was weeks following the revelation of "media's truth."
The military/corporate/media has, to a large degree, not adjusted to the new informational paradigm.
This is why they seem so bizarre: they tell their lies and are fact-checked in minutes, often the Truth has been on the innernets tubes before the Corporate Media has spun their lie!
Look for the continuation of efforts to censor the web.
It's hard to be the Wizard of Oz when that pesky little dog keeps pulling back the curtain.
its more about the capital intensive broadcast industry needing a high eyeball count for good ad rates.
It's all about selling crap.
Commercial advertising for the nickle and dime crap like Cadillacs and Courvasier.
Action News to sell the expensive stuff like tanks and submarines - complete with swarthy enemies of freedum!
Who did Gregory suck off to even be considered for the job?? He's a Bush lover and a total embarrassment to all intelligent Americans.
nothing more.
He'll do well.
A: Because you and most Americans are lazy and rely on broadcast news. Print journalism requires you to read, process and study difficult issues. There are no eye-candy graphics, dramatic or patriotic music transitions nor announcers with big titties and big hair. Take a train or bus to work and buy a newspaper along the way.
Print news are all wire reports because reporters and editors are being fired.
Many local papers have folded.
Newspapers are increasingly about ad space.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
yep. Americans drive to work 1 or 2 jobs and are not in a position to read and learn about world events. Newspapers started folding in the 80s because of this socio-economic shift. Reading makes you think. Yet, we have 700 military bases around the world.
Unfortunately, the local paper (Miami Herald) has gone the way of so many other papers--nearly no NEWS. I can read through most pertinent articles in the daily by the time the train or bus makes its first three or four stops. And the NYT, at $1.50 daily, is just something I can afford occasionally these days.

Should we expect anything different? Gregory is the perfect company man. If you challenge the status quo and kiss ass, you might get blackballed, and you might not get the opportunity to let Dick spread lies and propaganda.

Crooks & Liars is actually allowing criticism of Tim Russert! What gives??? I mean, he's dead, and there are people who mourn him. There's also people, highly influential (shhh! we can't tell you their names, but wouldn't you just _love_ to know who they are?) who read C&L and we certainly don't want to offend _them_, now do we?
Yes, these are actual excuses given to me for why a post of mine was removed, for being critical of Tim Russert. The sarcasm I added myself. Well, I still think Tim Russert was a foul traitor & I hope he's burning in the hell created by the god he whorshipped. And screw anyone who still mistook him for a "respectable journalist."
such thing as a "respectable journalist"? I can't recall any in the last 25 years. Anybody can have their staff make up questions and read a teleprompter.

And now we have "moderate pundits" who encourage us to revile people like Moore, Palast and company for their "extremism."
the only person you mention there would be Helen Thomas. The others, though they maybe feel like they are from the "left", are really only in it for the money. I remember reading one of Michael Moore's books, where he was lamenting about Detroit's auto losses, and went on to talk about his Volkswagon that never started if it looked like cold outside. It was later revealed the man never owned a Volkswagon in his life, and lives in a McMansion, surrounded by the people he pretends to despise. So, I take what they say with a grain of salt, knowing it's to sell a book, or a movie, and nothing more.

I have a real hard time being misty over Timmeh; there are a number of real living journalists who are still in the trenches.
But none of them rate their own shoe. It would rile the matrix!
But isn't Susie saying we are idiots that need everything explained to us that the media does?
If people are THAT stupid, then all the blogs on the internet are not going to explain why media hacks are full of crap. And I'm yet to see more than a couple of trolls on C&L that didn't already know that.
ONE thread. Just ONE. His obit thread we reminded people that our ongoing policy of keeping it respectful to the recently deceased was in play. The same policy we had for Tony Snow and the same policy we had for a myriad of other political figures of all stripes.
Are you actually going to tell me that we didn't allow criticism of Tony Snow? Because I'll laugh you right off this site.
We CRITICIZED Russert dozens of times. DOZENS. You don't remember those threads, just the one obituary thread.
Whatever, dude. It takes some serious brass gonads to come on to someone else's site and bitch that you can't be as nasty as you want to be whenever you want to be. That says far more about you than it does our commenting policy.
serves, C&L frequently used the sarcastic "Timmeh" name for Russert when he got all brown-nosed.

Reality has a liberal bias
Thats some really irritating shit!
It obviously isn't the old media's job to challenge the establishment. They serve another purpose and it's not journalism in the classic sense. It is the new media's job by default to keep the politicians and corporations honest. I'm OK with that. I just hope Obama is too.
Well that's working out great, isn't it?
A lot of this is about pre-war intelligence and the selling of this war. Well guess what - I knew the case was overblown from way over here, David. I figured it out - you couldn't. Admit you blew it and become a better journalist. Report what is the truth and not talking points. The excuse that Bill Clinton thought that Saddam had wmd's is ridiculous - so what? #1 things change. #2 Bill didn't feel confident enough in the threat to go to full scale war. Indeed the level of confidence needed should go through the roof when human lives are at stake - whole different context. #3 Meet the Press was played on pre-war - proved in court of law.
David, here is a rule of thumb if you ego can take - assume your getting played - you probably are and don't be afraid to admit it. Sorta Bob Schieffer-esqe.
Russert (god rest his soul) was an total NBC hack who was more interested in aggrandizing MTP than journalism. His little gotcha flashbacks from past shows were at times tangential and worse irrelevant to the big news of the day, it was depressing. Plus no follow up - all flash no fire. Didn't mind the old timey stuff at the end of the show as much, but watching a cloying Russert aggrandize MTP and thus his own tenure was still saccharine sickening. So David please lose the aw-shucks demeanor - it's icky.
This thread is a hoot!
I keep waiting for someone to jump in and defend him but so far, crickets.
It's like the old joke about the unpopular kid, he had to tie a pork chop around his neck to get the dog to play with him!
First off - it's hard to do reality based reporting when the rightys are breathing down your neck with the "liberal media" label - if you lose credibility even a false credibility - you got nothing - hopefully the lefty blogs can help balance things out.
But anyway - Gregory even though he has been on the bush's plane since 2000 - he still has a rawness, a greenness - that tiny itty bitty little bit of innocence left - so rejoice! There can be a false hope that tiny fraction will not succumb to the darkside.
See my above post for less critical take.
Please, please, plain English!
What on earth is reality based reporting?
I am so naive I thought you only report the facts, anything else is speculation or opinions.
No wonder you can't even talk to yourselves!
I think reality based reporting is to seperate it from editorializing and/or the new modus operandi punditocracy.

There was a six month ceasefire which was negotiated through the Egyptians since Israel refused to negotiate directly with Hamas.
According to that agreement, Hamas would stop launching rockets into Israel and Israel would open up the border crossings to allow humanitarian agencies to truck in food and medical supplies.
Hamas stopped launching rockets and all was quiet. A few months later, when Hamas contacted the Egyptians and said, we stopped the rockets, how about telling Israel to lift the siege?
Israel ignored those calls and refused to open the crossings. So, four months into the ceasefire, when Hamas had enough, they shot toward Israeli soldiers at the border crossings. The ceasefire fizzled from there until it reached a climax last month when Israel bombed an alleged tunnel and killed three Hamas members in the process.
By the way, if I wanted to act like a complete lying tool who has not one single iota of sensibility, integrity or humanity in him, I'd post something to the effect that the Holocaust was actually nothing worse than one big sweat shop, where people worked for minimal rations.

So far, Israel has killed more than 400 Palestinians since last Saturday and injured close to 2000. Now doctors are saying that due to shortages of medical supplies, 80% of the injured will likely die and Israel, including Livni are saying that there is NO HUMANITARIAN crisis in Gaza. I've got a bridge between Alaska and Russia to sell you.
Gregory has been one of the sharpest public critics of certain Bush administration actions, such as torture. He's had some very heated exchanges with former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan over this issue and the U.S. Attorney firing scandal, to name two. You can find some of these on YouTube. Usually Gregory hits hard when the person he questions either won't answer, or gives seemingly false or contradictory information. During his interview with Livni, she did neither. He asked her questions, she gave answers regarding her country's aims, and he asked follow-ups. I'm no neocon, but the fact that Gregory didn't attack Livni's explanations of why Israel is defending itself against years of rocket attacks deliberately aimed at its civilians doesn't now turn Gregory into a syncophant.
The problem with your having a hypothesis like yours in advance is that anything that doesn't fit the hypothesis is automatically suspect. So is anything that does fit the hypothesis, for that matter.

as i recall, there was one team that did question the run up to war...their hard hitting investigative pieces were either killed or shoved deep in the bowels of their papers
i recall most of the american press cheerleading the war...cheerleading, because war sells and because they saw what happened to guys like donahue (who had good ratings, yet found his ass shitcanned because of his views)
gregory has no backbone
very few on the air today have a backbone
to watch David Gregory ever since his gig as a "Rove-ette".
Well, we have to get money out. . . period !
Why would he compromise his BIG paycheck for the good of the country???
Think about it. . .
You got it why would he risk his very overpaid salary as a "news reader" by trying to be honest, or just giving a shit about the American people? When the company is willing to pay a person as much as they pay these people you can count on the fact that they are there to do what is in the best interest of the company.
Why else would they pay him so much to do a job millions of other people could do as well or better?
Hitler was a leftist too, the same goes for Putin. Trust me, there's a reason why they each did what they did.
If you had an asswipe defending the massacres of innocent people, you'd be saying the same thing......
In all seriousness though, are you out of your fucking mind? You don't even know half of what's really going on there. How do I know that? Because of the talking points you're regurgitating. I, too, watch interviews conducted with Netanyahu.
How would your melon for brains respond if someone occupied your land, imposed a siege on you and refused to abide by any agreement?
Since the Oslo accords until the present, Israel has been "negotiating" with the Palestinians for the sake of "negotiating". If they honestly intended to reach a solution and a permanent peace, they would have given the "moderate" Palestinians something to work with, something to take back to 'their people' and say, "Look, the Israelis are genuine in their efforts, let's just focus on negotiating with them".
Did that happen? No. Since 1993, Israel has exponentially increased colony buildup on Palestinian land. Home demolitions surged, and land confiscation went up.
I read your posts and I'm thinking "this hack is out of his fucking mind. How can he boldly lie like that and think he's fooling anyone with half a brain cell in their head?"
By the way, there are still 11,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, many of whom are teenagers. All the while, Hamas is holding ONE Israeli soldier captive. Not all the 11,000 got trials or had charges brought against them. They were merely thrown in prison under Israel's "administrative detention" laws. Any Palestinian can wind up in jail, if the military commissioner deems it necessary.
Lecture us about those homemade rockets that have killed 25 Israelis in the last 7 years, will you? The problem with assholes like you and many Israelis is your arrogant sense of self-entitlement and complete disregard for other human beings.
when it comes to Democratic Presidents. Now, having accepted all these awful reviews of their work over the last 8 years, they will suddenly find their old confrontational selves.
You must be an idiot or just a liar?
A better press corpse? [sic] and a Freudianism? Or the first time I've seen this pet name in current use? Whichever. Either is good.
David is a good little soldier, he obeys every command. Honest reporting? Not, and don't expect the pertinent questions that need to be asked. Propaganda at its best with David.
I have followed David for 6 years, I was hoping he would ask the honest questions to Bush and Cheney when the opportunity existed. Kindengarden questions.
David continue to play in your sandbox, do not play fairly, and support the Republicans and religious freaks.
David Gregory you disgust me. It is not your role to debate the President?
Helen Thomas is the only reporter who knows what her role is. That is to ask the questions that need to be asked.
YOU ARE A SKUNK, GREGORY. IS there another reporter out there that wants to take on the role of Helen Thomas?? Come on white house press core, lets see some courage. I am tired of these pansies.
NET should give Helen Thomas a show instead of that comatose meatball, Jimmy Lehrer.
I would tune in for that.
I would even contribute money for that.
I hate NET.
Every time they say that some piece of right-wing crap has been paid for by "people like you" - I want to throw a hatchet at the screen.
Wrong.
It IS your role, and you can do all of the soul searching you like David: the fact remains is that you all rolled over for 'access' to the White House and the Administration.
So go shove your snarky comment about The Left up your ass.
We were right and you pompous jerks were wrong.
The answer is simple.
They are paid millions of dollars to be hacks.
The people paying them, and the people who pay them to pay them, want it that way.
I don't bother watching this crap.
I was the only one on the planet who saw russert for the hack he was. I never saw him once do anything that remotely could be called "Journalism". He and now gregory were/are just repub sychophants.

I remember it wasn't too long ago that Bill Moyers was apologizing for the entire media industry for not being tougher on the Bush Admin. That's the difference between old school journalist and new school Brokaw suck up

If you want to experience real journalism, listen to any BBC news broadcast. When Owen Bennett Jones poses difficult questions to his subjects, you can feel the interviewees squirming. Jones even pursues followup questions!
