Football: Giants vs Iggles

My NY Giants take on Duncan's Iggles Sunday afternoon in the NFC playoffs.

That should be a heckuvagame.

And here's a flashback to a little racism from RushBo on ESPN.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,'' Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

He quit soon after.

My comments this past Sunday were directed at the media and were not racially motivated," Limbaugh said in a statement issued late Wednesday night. "I offered an opinion. This opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I regret.

"I love NFL Sunday Countdown and do not want to be a distraction to the great work done by all who work on it. "Therefore, I have decided to resign. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the show and wish all the best to those who make it happen."

George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, issued the following response: "We accept his resignation and regret the circumstances surrounding this. We believe that he took the appropriate action to resolve this matter expeditiously."

No racism there. And he loves Obama. Hey, I have a nice bridge to sell ya.

Dave N.: Can I make a side bet on Duran Duran vs. Yes?

I knew that he would say something ignorant about some black athlete.

Racists are quite predictable.

rushbo - big zero!
I like YES better than Duran Duran.

In a violent, fascist, evil consumer sport like professional football

racism should be more common place than in other parts of our consumer

society. The same drives that make grown men intentionally try to

hurt each other and smack each other on the ass drive men to hate

and exclude. Team vs. Team, race vs. race, brand vs. brand.

Pigskins, tits and ass, cold beer, and multiple concussions, broken bones...that's entertainment!!!!

Do real progressives enjoy these gladiatorial events?

Athletic men are paid millions of dollars a year to provide entertainment to beer sloshed American uber consumers.

IT IS RIDICULOUS!!!!!

..they die in some jungle or desert you've never been to..?

At least pro athletes get paid more than the soldiers do.

why must you appeal to my conscience!!

i agree with a lot of what you wrote.

but, then you wrote: "Pigskins, tits and ass, cold beer, and multiple concussions, broken bones...that's entertainment!!!!"

why do you make it sound so great?

:)

I do have to agree with you a bit,

but then again my father used to have a large collection of non-fiction books, and was an avid reader, yet he still enjoyed watching sports.

You say that like the 2 are mutually exclusive.

I played hockey, football, basketball and baseball in my youth. I also read Moby Dick when I was 7 years old and Darwin's The Origin of Species and Plato's Republic when I was 12 to name just a few.

No, what I meant was that they are not mutually exclusive.

You can be educated, sophisticated, informed, concerned, and progressive, and still like sports

Professional sports was one of the earliest parts of our society where racial barriers started to break down.

And yes, "real progressives" do enjoy sports. Try being a little more open minded. That's what progressivism is all about.

I am a former high school and college athlete.

You cannot be a true progressive and....

1. Watch network television in any form for entertainment
2. Believe in the christian god as portrayed in the bible
3. Support war, torture, and off the chart defense spending
4. Use the term "Global war on terror"
5. Purchase products from Walmart or McDonald's
6. Support the racist government of Israel

All of these practices are in complete opposition to the modern progressive movement. ALL OF THEM.

You can mumble and grumble. If you like football I'll meet you at Carondelet Park on Sunday.

be as close-minded as your posts suggest you are, Leadership.

The history of the United States is a story of a progressive fight for freedom. From slavery, to Women voting, to trade unions, to civil rights, we have fought for and gained freedoms no one else in history has ever enjoyed.

The next evolution in the progressive fight for freedom is the abolition of Corporatism and Consumerism. Both are choking the living fuck out of this planet. Both are fueled by television, Christianity, and warfare.

Is it close minded to not support slavery, or the burning of witches, or child labor?

No. In the same way it is wrong to support those things which work against peace and justice.

So being a progressive means agreeing with you with no exception? I appreciate your motivation but your passion (and I'm being generous) seems to have crippled your faculty for critical thought. Even if you were right generally, your absolutism makes your position indefensible.

I am not trying to be absolute.

We have a war to fight.

They have the upper hand.

If you give money to the enemy you are the enemy.

If you eat at McDonald's the your a half ass progressive.

I'm pointing out that when you make the argument: "Since I believe X, you CAN'T be a progressive if you don't feel the same" You are engaging in very non-progressive reasoning.

You are being absolute. You're making concrete statements about what behaviors you condone and anyone who doesn't agree is not a progressive.

Forbidding people to be appreciative of activities you find objectionable for their own good is far more of a conservative/right-wing/fascist mindset than it is a progressive one.

If you're waging 'war' you are not a progressive. You are a militant ideologue and results attained following your mindset won't put us in any better position than we are in now.

Bottom line: You're not a progressive either.

P.S. John Amato agreed with me so Nyah! :P

I am not forbidding anyone from doing anything.

And I am not militant.

I feel certain that some behaviors are inconsistent with progressive thought.

War was a poor word choice.

We are in a struggle with the forces of Corporatism and Consumerism. Our goal, I believe, is to make a better, more just, more peaceful world. We can do that by electing better Democrats and using our "dollar votes" to evolve our economy and culture.

If watching grown men trying to cripple each other is your idea of a good time, I am sorry. Worse than enjoying the barbaric sport is you are at the same time lining the pockets of the mainstream media.

We have no more visible and diligent enemy than the mainstream media.

And by "we" I mean the working men and women of this planet.

I don't disagree necessarily with the things you think are bad. When you tell people that if they don't agree with you, they are not progressives, then you are not a progressive.

Thank you for the lively conversation.

I will not be so absolute in the future.

1)The History Channel is very educational
2) you should say: don't use religion as an excuse to oppress others.
3)Totally agree
4)Totally agree
5)Agree, but sometime we have to be practical
6)Cautiously agree

The History Channel is owned by one of the 3 big networks. I am not sure which. So when you watch
"Secret aircraft of the Luftwaffe", a show I would dearly love to watch,m you are lining the pockets of our sworn enemies, the mainstream media.

Christianity by definition is oppression
.

this argument that if you are a sport's fan you're blind to everything else is ridic.
I'm working on a piece about why the working class roots for their teams...
College Football is still a racial embarrassment. I'll get to that at a later date too.

Because they can't read.

I'm working class, drive a truck for a living. Love sports, baseball, football, and hockey being my top three.

I also read voraciously. I'm never without a book. History, politics, science-fiction, "trivia" collections, biographies, I read them all.

Amazingly enough, for an illiterate working class drone, I've even been published.

Good for you....now if we can only get half of congress to follow in your footsteps, the world would be a better place.

Half of congress should be out there driving trucks.

Sweet. Your not a drone, your a working man, the lifes blood of the progressive movement.

But when you turn on Monday Night Football you empower the mainstream media. You support those who HATE you.

in the NFL, blacks were denied the 'skilled' positions and the 'intelligent' positions for some time(actually, until the AFL).

Quarterback
Center
Middle Linebacker

professional sports.
Rush was speaking to his fellow bigot's with that racist tirade on ESPN. In his hate filled, historical analysis of the black quarterback, the fat ass, completely non-athlete Rush failed to mention the many white quarterbacks in NFL history who were given every opportunity and still failed horribly. That being said, I've always been amazed at the damage stereotypes do to all races.

stop

So?

Is it any more ridiculous that replying to a post near the top, without actually replying to anything in the post just so you can have your post near the top of the page?

Besides, get rid of the adjectives and the opinions, what is wrong with "paid millions of dollars a year to provide entertainment"?

Its merely as ridiculous as anything else in our culture.

Football is fun, cheering for your team is fun, vicariously experiences the thrill of victory is fun.

why do some progressives hate fun?

Go Niners! (next season.. :P)

..ABBA on the radio, you can turn it off!
I don't drink beer!
Go Blue!

:)

I'll take Duran Duran if you spot me 12 points.

The only thing hotter then the Eagles are tickets to Obama's inauguration.

go eagles

sorry John, I'm going for the Eagles this year, because everytime McNabb does well, a part of Rush dies.

I do think that the Geeeee-Men are a great team.

..for the G-Men to repeat.

I did cheer for them in the Superbowl last year. I hate the cheating Patriots.

As a Packers fan, I'll go out on a limb and say that if you gave McNabb the Packers' receiving corps of the Favre era, McNabb would have more than one Super Bowl.

I've watched almost every game McNabb has played as an Eagle and my belief is that he's one of the most OVERRATED QBs in the game.

When you watch from afar, you miss the weekly passes he throws at his receivers' feet and the errant passes that aren't close to anybody. So many people who don't watch him weekly think he's this top-flight QB, but it's just not the reality of the situation.

Oh, and let's not forget his odd personality and irritating press conferences where he spent years saying so little and NEVER once took legitimate responsibility for anything. Never ever ever!!

I don't think a guy who is literally barfing due to the pressures of the final drive of a Superbowl is really someone who can win one.

When you watch from afar, you miss the weekly passes he throws at his receivers' feet and the errant passes that aren't close to anybody. So many people who don't watch him weekly think he's this top-flight QB, but it's just not the reality of the situation.

I'm a 4th generation Packers fan. Hell, I'm an owner of one share of stock! I get to vote on (mostly financial and board of directors) issues every July. And I saw a certain #4 throw an assload of bad passes- he's the all-time leader in INT's, ya know.

McNabb's rarely had one top flight receiver during his career. He had T.O. for a season. That rookie he's got this year looks pretty damned good. But Favre came in with Sterling Sharpe, whose career overlapped with Robert Brooks, who in turn overlapped with Antonio Freeman, who in turn overlapped with Donald Driver, who currently plays with Greg Jennings(and right now we're six quality-receivers-deep)- and we've typically had two pass catching TE's and RB's and FB's who have decent hands, too. Give McNabb weapons like that....

I'd like to see a rematch of what was once (before 1950) one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL.

Don't think I'll see it though. I'll take the Giants, but I won't give more than 1 1/2 points. Carolina will cruise by Arizona. In the AFC, I'm seeing Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

...and saying Giants-Ravens this year, if only 'cause I don't think too much of Big Ben's chances.

Rush Limbaugh still gets more attention in the mainstream news and blogs than Alex Jones does.

Ann Coulter still gets more attention than Sibel Edmonds.

Tom Delay gets more air time than Richard Gage.

Pat Robertson gets more air time than David Ray Griffin.

It's funny what humans find acceptable and worthy of discussion.

Sports and Competition are the best. Competing philosophies are also intriguing and need a fair playing field to properly compete.

only protects the batshit crazy people.

How can you come to that conclusion. One of his best friends is Alan Keys who I think is black.

and the way Tom theLinebacker looked at flush as he delivered his hateful tome.

I've lived in the Philly area all my life and I'm rooting for the Giants!!

The Eagles fans are the meanest, most arrogant fans and yet it's quite odd because they haven't won squat ever. EVER!!!

The fans here aren't the least bit worried about the Giants and are already thinking past them. They have Superbowl dreams dancing in their heads. I will quite enjoy it when those dreams are dashed by 4:30pm on Sunday.

Go Eli and the G-men!!!

...that I've attended quite a few Eagles-Giants games in the past (not in the last 10 years), and all in the Philly stadia; and, the Giants' fans have been equally as disgusting as any others, Eagles fans included.

I suppose I'll be rooting for the Eagles, just because I've lived in and around Philly all of my life, as well. I do like their fight song - best in the NFL - "Fly, Eagles, Fly" with a bit of a Mummer's banjo ring.

With regard to Limpballs, I never had the pleasure of listening to his erudite sports commentary, but I can't understand why anyone would pay him to talk about sports, as I doubt his large, lard-ass has ever participated in any kind of athletic activity - ergo, his large, lard-ass!

care much about the NFC, so might as well go for AZ. I'm tired of seeing them as almost-beens for so many years.

You're right about the Eagle fans, they are ruthless and have nothing to back it up! Disclaimer: I'm a life-long Steelers fan. Saw the Steelers v. Eagles in Philly and they harassed us the ENTIRE time. I love to trash talk the fans weekly and will continue to do so until they can win 1 SuperBowl.
As for the Steelers, we're working on rings for the other hand.

more than Rush. I don't think Howard was trying to be racist when he called Alvin Garrett(?) a "little monkey".

Rush is a racist, plain and simple.

...for black athlete's like Jackie Robinson and Ali. That's why us black folk didn't blink at his "monkey" comment.

Fly, Eagles, Fly!
On the road to victory!
Fight, Eagles, Fight!
Score a touchdown
1,2,3!
Hit'em low
Hit'em high
And watch our Eagles fly!
Fly, Eagles, Fly!
On the road to victory!
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is all.

One of his best friends is Alan Keys (sic) who I think is black.

OF COURSE he is.

Racism isn't the only reason for Limpballs' comments. If you don't remember who McNabb was playing against, it was Green Bay.

At that time it was widely known that Brett Favre was addicted to painkillers though Limpballs' own addiction was not. Clearly, Limpballs was one drug addict cheering on another (although Favre being white certainly had something to do with it).

Do you enjoy anything? That is the stupidest rant i have ever seen on this site. Progressivism is not about sucking the fun out of life. To compare football to real war is so over the top it appears insane. Go protest a clown you fool.

Who cares about them NFC teams? Everyone knows that the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to win the Super Bowl this year, no matter who wins on the NFC side.

:D

Pittsburgh Steelers all the way!!

kick some Eagle butt but still won't be as satisfying as last year's kicking of Dallas' butt!!!!!!!!11

Not only are they slightly younger, but they are also ninjas who can grow to monstrous size to battle giant monsters.

I am a long time Giants' fan, going back to the 1960s, when they were one of the worst teams in the league. Perhaps that is why, whenever I see Manning get into trouble when he is severely rushed, that the number 10 that he wears could be changed to the persona [or at least the legs] of another person who wore that number in the 1960s for the Giants, Scramblin' Fran Tarkenton, and was able to elude many a sack when he played for the Giants and the Vikings.

On another topic, though Leadership has been vilified for what he has written, I can understand his point of view, as I often wonder why, as a Vietnam veteran, I should care so much whether the Giants win or lose, since, as Leadership correctly notes, innocent Iraqis, Afghans, and Palestinians are being slaughtered for absolutely no justifiable reason by American bombs.

One has to wonder that if there were as many people speaking out against these unnecessary acts of aggression each week as there are thousands of fans packing into sports stadiums each Sunday, if these idiotic imperialistic wars could finally be brought to a halt.

I live in Philly, and I even have a distant family relationship to the franchise itself. So I'm Iggles all the way.

If only the current #10 who is now quarterbacking the Giants could have the same receiver that the former #10 [Fran Tarkenton] had back in the 1960s and that would be #45, Homer Jones, who still has the league's best reception per catch [over 20 yards per catch]. Homer Jones was also a former track man in college who was one of the very few people to have beaten Bullet Bob Hayes in a race when both of them were in college. Perhaps the Giants could draft someone similar to Homer Jones in the upcoming draft in April.

Is also credited with introducing the celebratory "spike"!

... his Oxycontin, umm, "junkie-ness" was about to be revealed. He knew his radio-gig was safe, but Disney?

Rush knew he was on the way out and maneuvered himself into leaving as a poor victim of political correctness instead of as a narcotics-addict.

Umm, the longest-running rivalry in pro football is the Packers and Bears (1921). The Giants (1925), Redskins (1932) and Eagles (1933)have clashed almost as long. Regardless, it's a good division matchup.

And it was great to see that racist Limbaugh bounced. As someone else pointed out in an earlier post on it, ridiculous, fact-free BS doesn't get as much leeway in sports commentary as it does in political punditry. Well, sometimes it doesn't, anyway.

What's currently the longest, continuous annual rivalry in the NFL (That is, dating back from this season)?

I talked about the old Cards-Giants rivalry up-top, and though most people don't know it, the rivalry skewed the physical alignment of the divisions. The Bidwell family, long-time owners of the Cards, still held rivalry with the Giants, even after moves to St. Louis and Arizona. That's why the ARIZONA Cards were in the NFC EAST until the last re-alignment.

Wow

I went to a football thread and a discussion on race, class, consumerism and self indulgence broke out! Great comments everyone.

I just want to say how impressed I am with Joe Flacco, that guy is only a rookie! I like one bird to keep flying (Raven) after this weekend is over, but two others (Eagles and Cardinals) to join their feathered friends the Falcons in front of the television.

And speaking of this strange confluence of war and religion with football, nothing like a close-up of Tebow with "John 3:16" under his eyes with a time out and a commercial for the Marines, both can be easily digested for the dazed high schooler who spells Iraq with a K

if we can get Keith "Jocksniffer" Olbermann off TV.

Olbermann is one of the few intellectual commentators with original thought and insight.

And that's the only time Rush Limbaugh was ever right!

the coward ass bitch that he is! Now compare in the history of the NFL the number of absolutely sorry ass white quarterbacks to the sorry ass black ones...and get back to me.

Go Iggles!

The Giants are gonna school Philly!!!! Do ya smell what the Giants are cookin'!!!!

like you schooled us last time? We're playing with house money and and are on a mission.
