John wrote the other day about the speculation that David Gregory would take over as moderator of "Meet The Press." Today, Tom Brokaw made it official and announced that Gregory would indeed fill the late Tim Russert's seat.

WaPo:

Barack Obama made news on "Meet the Press" this morning, but the NBC program made some news as well in the final moments.

Tom Brokaw, the interim moderator, confirmed what had already leaked out in recent days: the new host of the 60-year-old program will be David Gregory.

The network's senior White House correspondent, now host of MSNBC's "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," had been considered the front-runner for the post, which became vacant when longtime moderator Tim Russert died in June. But NBC executives were still negotiating the final terms of the deal this past week.

Congrats to David. Although I was pulling for Rachel Maddow, and although there may have been better choices, I'm confident Gregory will do a fine job holding the proverbial feet to the fire.

I can't stand David Gregory. He is a right wnger who dances to the corporate (GE) tune. He looks like Howdy Doody with a Super-Cuts haido.

Yeah, he'll "hold their feet to the fire." Nothing like delusion, is there?

I got my fill of Gregory's ineffectual and wandering fix on "the big picture" during his "covering" the elections. To me, he epitomizes the homogenized result of pouring conventional wisdom into a media blender and the resulting extrusion of a gelatinous mass of verbiage designed to offend no one. This is nicely balanced by his worship of "fairness-" that peculiarly american media trait of presenting "all two sides" of an issue and calling it good to go without actually demanding discernment.

Other than that, I think Gregory will uphold the fine standards that traditional media and its talking heads have given us over the last decade and a half.

The MSM has dumbed down most of America. The only ones close to holding their feet to the fire are K.O. and Rachel.

I have no doubt that Karl Rove's former dance partner will uphold the high standards of the late Little Russ.

Yuk

But it doesn't matter much when the parent company is in the war-profiteering business and gets most of its ad revenue from the pharmacuetical industry.

You could have Amy Goodman moderate MTP and it wouldn't make much difference with parents like G & E.

Gregory is not qualified to wash the feet of Amy Goodman. He is the Rick Perry of journalism. David GoodHair.

Really. if he weren't getting $400 haircuts and all...

Let's see if he has the guts to ask the tough questions. The main problem with all these guys is that they've gotten on the realllly good cocktail party lists in D.C., and now that they socialize with all the people they later interview, they play a lot of footsie.

Arbusto's picture

I disagree that David will do ok; well he will do ok for NBC, but not enlightenment. He may have taken Bushes Press Secretaries to the verbal wood shed occasionally, did he ever do so to Bushy or his cohorts? Not that I remember. What I do remember is his ongoing attendance at the insiders Press Club and doing the Macarena with Turd Blossom. David loves celebrity too much to offer up tough questions. He will go down the path previously occupied by Russert; softball questions and poor follow up.

Freddy Knuckles's picture

But they could have picked better, too.

I would have liked Rachel but she's too new and probably too liberal for corporate tastes. I remember people knocking "Tim eh" last spring and old Brokaw since. Being in a more powerful space now may allow Gregory to be more assertive. Time will tell of course so let's give him a chance.

Great! This gives me a very good reason to continue to NOT watch MTP.

popworld7's picture

David Gregory knows where his bread is buttered and he will not be holding any "feet to the fire" except those Democrats who stray to far to the left of this "center-right" nation as the big media keeps trying to remind everyone of what they say the country really is. Russert was the bulldog without teeth and Gregory isn't going to be any different as they work for NBC/GE who bring good things to life. I WISH he would do his job with EVERYBODY who comes on his show no matter what their political philosophy, but that is too much to hope for.

MikeM's picture

Gee, I bet Gregory would never dare to ask Bush in an exit interview or after he leaves why since he states he will be helpful for the transition he is filing scores of measures which will bring harm to numerous sectors of our society which will take the new administration years to undo.

wisedup's picture

I stopped watching MTP when nbc started gaging Tim. You could tell when he stopped the follow up questions when the rightwing shills were allowed to blabber the same ol bush BS.

I used to listen to this guy while he was hosting Race to the White House. Almost every topic, no matter how serious or convoluted was started as "Doesn't this pose a problem for Obama?"

He was so sympathetic and supportive of McCain and Palin as if they were some monolith of a ticket. I had to stop listening to the show.

And this is who fills Russert's shoes.

Slideguy's picture

David Gregory had a couple of gotcha moments as a member of the ludicrously lame White House Press Corps, but his usual point of view are GOP talking points and the received wisdom of the Village. I was hoping for something better than another great haircut on the make.

miss_kitty's picture

over his tough questioning of the WH mouthpieces, including the Chimpster. He seemed very different for a time -- I think it was after Helen was relegated to Faroffistan in the WHPR, so any bucking the sycophancy appeared to be outstanding.

Apparently though, Rove gave David an unending supply of his favourite candy bars to keep stum; next thing you know he's dancing with the Prince Pig of Darkness (sorry, pigs), on stage and I had to quit watching, in case a public reach-around was on tap for the evening, because it sure seemed to be headed that way...

It wouldn't matter who hosted a show on a MIC media channel, it will serve as a tool to brainwash the masses to support war and the corporate agenda. Gregory is a biased right winger who supported McCain, this is a terrible choice even for a MIC station.

David Gregory is just going to be another shrill who is going to push the "center-right" myth, despite massive evidence to the contrary.

Otay's picture

And I thought Gregory's true talent lay as a dancing talking-point parrot. That or a co-star on the Flintstones.

bmw 528's picture

I never watch MTP or any other of the propaganda shows like it because I don't need any reminders of how (with several exceptions) how weak and lame the MSM is. They have lots of time to blabber on about inane and superficial trivia and catapult their corporate masters propaganda but develop amnesia when actually asked to hold people like Neocon slimeballs accountable and responsible for their actions. They are little more than enablers for the dysfunctional Beltway Neocon bullies who regularly boast about and congratulate each other on their competency and relevance while the voters throw them out of office.

Can I submit my suit as a host on the MSM? It would certainly hold the PTB feet to the fire better than David Gregory, and would cost the MSM much less.

QUALAR's picture

And I thought McCain had that Cheshire Cat smile. He enjoys access too much to be objective.

If they're dems, you betcha. If they're repubs, they'll get a pass, he's a repub sycophant with limited thought processes.

People still waste their Sunday mornings watching this stuff? Really?

Sherlock's picture

When did you get so mushy, John? I can't believe the suck up job you just did. Gregory is the best puppet for softball journalism and you know it. Scan the comments from your own readers and get a clue. No serious advocate for principled investigative journalism is pleased about this choice. "I am sure he will do a fine job holding....." And on what evidence are you basing that statement?

hazmaq's picture

When David's MSNBC show first came on I switched to Mad Money with Kramer, and never left. Learned more and felt better too.

Now to find a replacement for MTP.

It's a toss up between "Santa's Camoflauged Wonderland at the Bass Pro Shops" on Direct's channel 115, or "Total Drama Island" on 297
or even more appropriate "Shit you must buy" on Direct's 222.'

I think I can't help but dump Gregory for the Santa passing out guns at Christmas.
Did I learn more? You betcha'!

HO HO HO mother fu**ers!

have seen the clip of Obama with Brokow than David Gregory.

They never could have chosen Rachel. She is so left leaning and most importantly probably way too smart.

no longer a proud american's picture

HOW SOON WE FOREGET,someone on this blog cogratulating gregory on his new post. LEST WE FORGET, Gregory started out as a thorn in bush's side during the infamous press conferences. gradually, as he came to realize that that leftist stance was taking him nowhere career-wise, he ended up dancing with karl rove, both literally and figuratively. so, in essence, he sold any journalistic ethics down the tube to gain this current position. don't think he's done, he envisions himself of the same stature as a cronkite, a rather, an edward r. but david you're not even a good gregory. some of us know you for what you are, go take your place alongside lieberman. But collect your check before you do, you've earned it.

BigIslandDave's picture

... with a poisonous, treasonous slimeball like Karl Rove doesn't deserve any of my viewing time.

He's just another member of the corporate knee-pad brigade. A GOP stenographer who will most certainly go after Dems much harder than Repugs -- in the grand tradition of that other vastly overrated media whore, Timmeh the "Blue Collar Guy From Buffalo" Potatohead.

And what's with the Barney Rubble hairdo, Mr. Gregory?

You go, Rachel!

you can forget gregory asking any economy questions.

gregory's wife got 3 million as a former executive at fannie mae

so the economy is off the table at meet the press

wall st. has paid off everybody including the media and politicians.

wow that is weak, Gregory? really? the guy is just not that bright, and seriously doesnt have the historical advantage that someone 15 years his senior would. an insult to russert, not that he wasnt an out right corporate shill at times.

Intrepid's picture

MTP can be trusted to be about as objective as Fox news. Gregory joins a grand tradition at Meet the Propagandists:

BeeSting's picture

This should mean quite the boon for the Flo-bee industry.

Otay's picture

I can imagine how this was discussed at NBC's board meetings:

Suit 1 (somewhat smart relative to most suits): Well, we have two choices here with the next Meet The Press host. We can hire someone smart, who isn't in the tank for the GOP, and thus offend 20% of our target audience, but gain bigger market share overall. Or we can put someone bland on. Someone who has really poor ratings on the shows he hosts right now...someone like David Gregory. And thus we would offend almost no-one, since most people will be asleep. Or off taking a break from the t.v. Which would be like using the MTP as a screen saver for t.v.s.

(looks around for laughs but sees mostly blank stares and a gleam in some eyes)

Suit 2: Hey! That's a cool idea! We'll put David Gregory on and market MTP as a screen saver for the t.v.! It shows we're hip to technology!

Bad Eye's picture

Was it just me, or did David's voice seem a little more, um, "prissy" when he was talking to Tom this morning?

A little late to the comments but just want to add my 2 cents worth:
Gregory Sucks. And I guess sucking up works just fine. Meet the press has jumped the shark. While Tim didn't get to down and dirty with his guests at least he got as close as you can in this day and age of MSM. But that's all in the past now; don't even bother tuning in.

Demobrat's picture

I had no idea David Gregory was offered the position on 'Meet The Press'. I don't really watch 'Meet The Press', but now I know for sure I won't ever. David Gregory is hard to look at. I'm not trying to be mean, but he's fugly. I too would like to see Rachel Maddow in that seat. She tells it like it is and as she see's it. In the mean time, I hope that Dan Abrams' show 'Verdict' comes back on and they can get rid of the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue show. I loved Dan's show. Rachel's show is one of my favorites, if not 'the favorite'.

GREGORY! One of the Best reasons i know of NOT to watch Meet the Bullshit.

Wesley E. Ledjennes's picture

was a Right Wing Appologist Hour in CHICKEN FEATHERS. Gregory is hooked up with "center-right" thinking and will never make a mark as a tough or fair interviewer for Meet The Press.

Who's he gonna blame when the Democrats start talking about war crime tribunals... or indictments for the Bushies in the W's infamous Justice Department? Gregory will cry FOUL and put on Newt Gingrich for another EXCLUSIVE HOUR.

but everybody here pretty much beat me to it.

I won't be holding my breath, waiting for Gregory to hold anything to the fire, except maybe a marshmellow at a GOP campfire.

He's a tool.
