Obama pens stimulus op-ed in The Washington Post

President Obama took to the pages of The Washington Post this morning to continue to make the case for his economic stimulus package.

WaPo:

By now, it's clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression. Millions of jobs that Americans relied on just a year ago are gone; millions more of the nest eggs families worked so hard to build have vanished. People everywhere are worried about what tomorrow will bring.

What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches the urgency they feel in their daily lives -- action that's swift, bold and wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis.

Because each day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes. And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

like Obama has to do this all by himself?

Where are all the Democrats? Aren't there House and Senate members who could be more vocal and more out in front of this issue?

Am I wrong?

When the corporate-owned media does nothing but parrot right-wing talking points.

It wasn't too long ago that Republicans controlled Congress, and the same corporate media would talk endlessly about obstructionist Democrats if there was even a hint of resistance to a Republican idea.

the dems have a finger in the wind and an ear to their corporate masters.

If there are truly more vocal colleagues they'll want to not care about being re-elected as much as saving the country.

FilthyHarry's picture

Country probably wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. Dems are either complicit, incompetent or spineless. In actuality a combo of all three.

But, I happen to disagree that bailing out banks or wall street is anywhere close to the solution. The solution is to recover the billions, if not trillions, that Bush et al. spent and stole. That money should be recovered, as well corporations should be dis-empowered from lobbying or, really even recording any profit. All Americans should be put to work, health care should be universal (health insurance companies should be put out of business and the rich should have their money seized. Then America should dis-empower the US military and America should work to a sustainable future that does not entail any sort of imperialism. We should also put all the banks and oil companies out of business. That's right we should become a republic again where the people are in power.

What bugs me most is how Obama will "publicly" tell us how dire the situation is and how bad things are, but then he keeps making concessions and courting the approval of the very people that got us here. :(

Obama playing the fear card, except this time he's fear mongering economic catastrophe, not 9-11.

Disaster capitalism has a new acolyte.

...health care, personal savings is a fear card Obama uses similar to Dubya and 9-11? Don't you know of someone who has lost a job or their home? Get help dude.

I asked this on the previous thread, but you must've moved on. I'd like to have your response.

"In all seriousness, I'd like your opinion on something.

1.Besides possibly Hilda Solis, which, if any, of Obama's picks do you feel is a true liberal? It seems Obama has picked a lot of talented people but few of them are really liberal.

2. Are there any of Obama's appointments you have reservations about?

You are very supportive of Obama (rightfully so) but tend to not allow others their reservations about him (and yes, I know many who criticize have been exceedingly quick and shrill about it.)

I'm just interested in you input.

Thanks."

then, by all means, play the fear card. It's not like we haven't a whole deck after the last 8 years... what's a few more?

Unless, of course, you'd prefer we do nothing and watch the economy collapse.

but I know you were. Bush Paulsen and Bernake 1st started talking about the crises we are in back in September.

with the bailout of Bear Stearns.

Here

Before he was Treasury Secretary, Paulson was the CEO of Goldman Sachs and was a prime mover in the SEC decision in 2004 to allow the big five Investment Banks capital leverage to go from 12 to 1 to 35 to 1. That was the last straw that broke the camels back.

Here is Stiglitz.

Paulson by March of '08 knew we were in deep doo doo. Yet they waited until September to come up with a ridiculously short 3 page plan for the most massive swindle in history.

Had they talked more about it in March there might have been enough of an outcry to bring about public hearings in congress.

No such luck.

Paulson's Plunder for his buddies. Obama is going along with the plan.

jimbojames's picture

Bush, Paulsen and Bernanke were talking about the economy way back in September? When did September become a long time ago? I have known that there was a slowdown since Nov. 2007. Now, if you want to know the reason for it don't look to housing prices, mortgage scam corps or even banks. Look to Bush and the illegal wars. If America stops wasting close to a trillion dollars on the US military and the wars every year, there would never have been an economic crisis. And, oh yeah, no matter how bad you allege the terror problem is in the world today, it was 1000% better on 9/12/01. These people (Bush, Cheney, Rethuglicans, Petreaus, Mullen, Gates and many DINOs) are not only happy with the way things turned out, but it is exactly the way they planned it to be. Just look at Pakistan. It was always claimed by the so-called wackos, that America sought to destablize Pakistan, well, now the US military openly argues for widening the war into Pakistan. I know they have been waging war there since 10/7/01, but now they are going to do it out in the open. G-d help us, if Obama does not arrest these traitors (Petreaus, Mullen, Gates, Odierno and many, many others within the US military and intelligence agencies).

At least he's still quoting that fearful 5 million jobs!! Thought that would have increased by now to 6 or 7. Goes up every time they wanna "boogey, boodey, watch out fer da boogeyman if you don't let us have all your grandchildren's cash".
Break it down. Show what long term jobs the pork bill will create and where. Quit bringing out these fictional numbers. Nobody else has seen this number of unemployed increase with every speech?????

i am still looking for the nuts and bolts to the stimulus package...

so, does anyone know if obama is still floating the idea of creating a "bad bank" for all of the 'toxicity' in the banking system???

curtilingus's picture

B of A's stock panicked down to 3,70 today. That sounds like a pretty bad bank to me.

Think of their recent model: acquire over-leveraged institutions saddled with toxic debt for way more than their market value.

the only part they left out was "close the bank down when finished, at a loss of course."

So they want to make another bad bank? To buy up the debts of the bad bank?

Samson-'s picture

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/02/04-7

The rumored plan is for the government to buy up hundreds of billions of dollars of bad debt from banks and place it in a "bad bank". The bad bank would then resell these assets for whatever price it could get from private buyers.

The basic problem with this sort of plan is that it requires that the government overpay for the bad assets. If we just pay Citigroup, Bank of America and the rest what their assets are worth, then they would be bankrupt. They have taken enormous losses on these assets. If they had to own up to their losses, it would wipe out the capital of many, if not most, of the banks in the country.

we already have gifted anough money to the banks to own them. thus, we should.

actually, we have given banks multiple times their net worth, for what? nothing. it is time to take control.

nationalize.

Alice X - Chomsky Nader's picture

Schumer here says 'Bad Bank' cost estimates go as high as $4 trillion.

He says that is too expensive so he prefers insurance.

My take is that will be just as expensive but it will be even less transparent which will be good for the politicians but not the taxpayers since this will still be the mother of all slush funds.

Here Stiglitz, speaking of UK banks says let them fail, I say the same thing about the US banks. Tear up the credit default swaps and then nationalize the largest banks.

Here Elizabeth Warren says TARP I overpaid $78 billion.

Here Gretchen Morgenson reminds us that there are $15 trillion in Credit Default Swaps still primed to blow up.

Here James Lieber in the Village Voice reminds us the Government is completing the scam that the swindlers started.

I found fault with some of his numbers here but not the theme that there many swindlers deserving of jail time.

Here Paul Keating, former Australian Labor Treasurer and Prime Minister gives an fresh and informative view of the entire global meltdown.

by Paul Keating:

The top 200 financial institutions in the world have suffered an average loss of value of 74 per
cent. The top 200, average loss of 74 per cent.

is most revealing.

Why did they lose all that money. I am working on it.

in reviewing the neoliberal argument against limiting CEO compensation (sidenote: it shouldn't be limited, it should be absolved) there was a claim made that if the govt limited CEO comp for companies receiving the blackmail payment (TARP) there would be a "brain drain" and the most talented people would go to banks that aren't limiting compensation...

to which i wonder: brain drain? "brains"? where? who? talented people? huh? does not compute. these guys weren't "brains" and their only talent was in gaming the system. another empty threat from the silver-spoon class.

Liberal AND Proud's picture

the Republicans said that if we give all our money to the corporations it will trickle down to us.

Doesn't that mean that the solution is to make corporate tax rate equal 0% and tax all wages below $100K at 100% and all wages over $100K at 0% and eliminate all taxes on capital gains...and inheritances...and then...and then prosperity will REIGN!!

GODSMACK - VooDoo lyrics
[Chorus:]
I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I wanna be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Candles raise my desire
Why I'm so far away
No more meaning to my life
No more reason to stay
Freezing feeling,
Breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

[Chorus]

Hazing clouds rain on my head
Empty thoughts fill my ears
Find my shade by the moon light
Why my thoughts aren't so clear
Demons dreaming
Breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

[Chorus x4]

Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
[Repeat]

So far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...

i say its time to seize the assets and factorys of the corporations who left america for china ect! and reopen them , retool for new products , and hire only americans , close the seaports to chinese made crap, let the workers share in the profits these factorys produce and let the workers invest in thier own jobs in thoes factorys, let this jobs works money pay for starting up the factorys and then have the money borowed paid back in installments , and any companys still thinking about sending thier jobs overseas take them away and sieze thier inventorys and any assets they have! keep the workers working and give them shares in the factorys, and get the hell out of afganistan and iraq! then send me a finders fee for saveing your ass and tax dollars! tens and twentys will be fine!

Hell yes!

Sometimes I find myself stuck in this lingering fog of Bushisms, and Bush the decider, and Bush blathering nonsense, and his defying the constitution, his love of Wall street and tax cuts, and the Schiavo's and ignoring NO when Katrina hit, starting a stupid war....Karl Rove the list just goes on forever, and then the fog lifts when I hear President Obama speak in real terms and I know we have a leader who Reads, Speaks in complete Sentences, and writes. I admire and respect this man who willingly decided to clean up after Bush, it's a daunting task, because as we all know Bush royally f**ked things up. The GOP will continue to wage war and distract us with terms like socialism, and terrorists will win. To them I say Bite Me, enough with you, and I'm exhausted from Bush, he left his dirty little fingerprints everywhere......Let's get on with what needs to be done already

By being obstructionistic, the Republicans risk two things. First, they risk being blamed for anything bad that happens. Second, they risk being left out if Obama's plan passes and is successful.

And the debates between Al Gore and G. Bush was what each was going to do with that surplus. A lock box or a tax cut. What the fuck happened.

woody's picture

The 'surplus' was always illusory.

It depended on things continuing on as they had been, housing/tech/ bubbles and all...

This stuff that is going on in the United States is the same thing the IMF and World Bank do to third world countries. Get them into massive debt with fiat currency. Destroy the currency and you control the country. We need smart people to start looking into this stuff and spreading the word. You know journalism.

Yep, and Obama is just The One that will enable them to push this crap through.

Afterall, He isn't Bush.

I have been noticing lately that some mainstream media are not using a capital P when referring to the President of the United States. This may seem like a trivial point at first glance but I'm seeing a pattern and wondering if it is intentional. Mark Halperin's The Page is where I first noticed it repeatedly. This column in the Washington Post displays Barack Obama as author and at the bottom says that he is president of the United States. Has anybody else noticed this?
