Q: How pathetic is the current Republican Party?
By SilentPatriot Friday Dec 12, 2008 10:00am
A: Pretty damn pathetic, especially when you look at the numbers.
Republicans look like the football team dancing in the end zone in the fourth quarter of a game when they’re down by 40 points [...]
Republicans need to come to terms with the fact that over the last four years, Democrats have gained control of every level of government.
In the House, Republicans had a 232-202 majority after the 2004 election. Next year, Democrats will have a 257-178 edge. In the Senate, Republicans had a 55-45 majority after the 2004 election. Next year, Democrats will have 58 or 59 Senate seats.
After the 2004 election, Republicans held 28 governorships compared with 22 for the Democrats. After Nov. 4, Democrats held 29 governorships compared with 21 for the Republicans, although the GOP will gain one back if Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) leaves, as expected, to join Obama’s Cabinet.
After the 2004 election, Republicans controlled the state legislature in 20 states compared with 19 Democratic-controlled states. Now, Democrats control the state legislature in 27 states, with the Republicans holding only 14.And there are over 800 more Democratic state legislators than Republicans in the country, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures Web site. Four years ago, Democrats had a mere 10-seat edge out of more than 7,000 nationwide.
Given this new GOP optimism, if Democrats keep their cash in banks rather than in appliances, they could be in the majority for a very long time.
Republicans have taken a severe beating on literally every single level of government, which makes their recent jubilation over winning runoff races in Georgia (!) and Louisiana (!) pretty funny. It's like if we were ecstatic after winning an election in, say, the bluest parts of NY or CA. Again, pretty damn pathetic and pretty damn hysterical. Let's hope the delusion never ends.

Well what do you expect when your priorities are war, torture, spying and Jebus, instead of the economy ???
Can you imagine how bad things would have been if the gays had been allowed to marry?
Thanks GOP, always looking out for our interests!
GOP is now an onomatopoeia for elephant droppings splattering to the ground.
... you're on a roll today, Ys.
It ain't a roll, but will this do?

"Republicans look like the football team dancing in the end zone in the fourth quarter of a game when they’re down by 40 points [...]"
Frankly, I don't think that is accurate. I can't recall a time where the Republicans actually appeared to have scored a touchdown. Even the Iraq war, which they pushed through with fear was like a hail Mary pass that was eventually dropped in the endzone. In fact, the Republicans have had so many botched plays, fumbles, dropped passes and interceptions that I think they actually start to cheer the other team!
Hugh over at Firedoglake said this last night
"“This will be the first depression in US history that our Senate voted for."
I will change that to Republicans and 2 Democrats
Franken Wins Major Victory In Absentee Count
"Al Franken received a potentially major boost towards his hopes of becoming Senator on Friday, when Minnesota state officials ruled that absentee ballots rejected because of clerical or administrative errors should, in the end, be counted."

Any alien observing from a distant planet and only being able to view our world through the media would think that about 75% of the United States are far right wing and would be completely puzzled on why the media didn't reflect the additutde of the people.
When everyone else on this planet veiws and judges Americans based upon what they read and watch in the American Media.
Imagine what they think when they see the media sycopohants talking about the "War against Christmas"?
Besides the obviuous laughter, they can't help but be drawn to the conclusion that Americans are NUTS!
I guess my point is as long as the giant corporations have control of the TV news the Republicans will have real power no matter what government offices they hold.

The aliens would determine that the planet is populated by intelligent, but ultimately savage beings that are fixated on a religious icon and thus, unsuitable for inclusion in a larger galactic society.
That, or there was some kind of parasitic lifeform called 'Bill-O' that was destroying the planet.
the GOP sucks.
granted. given.
but, let's not forget that the majority of the dems in congress not only supported but championed some of the awful legislation that came back to haunt the GOP, as they were 'the party in power'. and, only b/c the majority of people saw everything as the fault of the republicans were the dems able to regain so much power.
i think the dems are damn lucky right now.

hope you find that link useful important story
The only thing missing from that Time cover is the huge, stinking load of crap the Republicans have heaped on the American people, the economy, the Constitution and the rest of the world.
Which republican is that? Kinda looks like McConnell..
Republicans continue with the meme that we are a center right country-while the Democrats have control of every level of washington. it's like they think that if they just say it enough, it will be true.
The only thing sorrier than the GOP ideologs are the Leaderless Democrats. Talk about losing upward. Jeesh!
That could change though. I'm not very happy with Pelosi and Reid. I really hope that Obama can straighten those two out. There's definitely better leadership out there amongst the Dems.
... let's have a good laugh, then get down to work. Inevitably, the Dems take the GOP's failures as proof of their own godhood, and then wonder what went wrong when the failures ream them in a midterm election.
The present GOP is little more then a small minded and bigoted group of obstructionists utterly devoid of any redemptive ideas. Instead, they have become professional political homewreckers, ripping the fabric of government with impunity while blaming others for their reprehensible and bizarre conduct.
repugs are the roids of polity movement.
A bunch of bitter old men desperately trying to cling to the trickle-down gravy-train.
It's going to blow up in their face big time. A lot of people are being denied access to healthcare, having their homes stolen from them, having their retirements stolen from them, and having their kids blow away in senseless wars. A lot of pent-up emotion is behind this desire for change. I would not want to be an obstructionist on the other end of this. The Republicans are really setting themselves up as a politically irrelevant speed bump.

It's always been ironic to me that they use the elephant as a symbol. The elephant is such a strong, intelligent and gentle beast. Doesn't fit the Republicans.
Maybe they should change to a Badger, Weasel, or Skunk.
How about an opossum, rat, or rattle snake?
Badgers, we don't need no stinkin' badgers!
They are pretty cute. Aren't they mean, though?
Opossums are pretty wicked, though. Rattlesnake is fitting.
... a leech, 'cause it stays on and sucks blood until it is gorged, then drops off. Or, you can remove it by applying a little heat, like a cauterizing needle or cigarette.
... a star-bellied sneech, 'cause they've got stars upon thars. Flag pins. Belief in Buddy Christ. Whatever.
Leech.... or maybe a tick!!!

why does the GOP still get so much press?
YA! What a shining example to be hammered with day after day.
and if they dont show that they can be tough and get things done, then this wonderful majority will be gone come 2010
and dont forget, the wingnuts still control the courts
They control four votes of the nine needed for a majority; Thomas, Scalia, Alito and Roberts. None of the other five are consistently conservative in their rulings. Obama needs to appoint 2-3 liberals to balance the wingnut wackos on the court.
As pathetic as a parapelegic at a pogo dancing contest.
And it's not that being, living, thinking conservatively is bad.
It's that Republicans sold their souls to the Christian Right and corporate interests for POWER. And they did it so long ago and so thoroughly, that it is THEY who can no longer remember what it means to be conservative.
Ending the war on drugs is conservative. (smaller government)
Government NOT defining marriage is conservative.
Closing tax Loopholes is conservative.
The GoP .....is NOT conservative.
i respectfully disagree; the Repuignants seem to control the line of scrimmage... when Harry Reid says Waaa, they won't let us save the American auto industry, Waa, i'd hate to see Wall Street tomorrow, waaa, we don't wanna make them actually filibuster, i say, to hell with them and frankly, to hell with harry... we need a Senate Majority Leader who will call the Repuignants on the carpet, parade story after story of UAW autoworkers who make essentially exactly what non-union workers make in the southern states, and parade story after story of UAW retirees, nearly half a million strong, who will be completely assed out, they retirement plans GONE, when Congress finishes their complicit posturing with Big Detroit. They already gave billions we will never see again to Wall Street, let Neel Kashkari (sic) come and spit in their face about the potential for hundreds of millions in bonuses being paid, yes, this Christmas, while GM and then the others will duck behind bankruptcy and dodge their responsibility to retirees, the working man and woman, and all those downstream in the auto and related industries. Wall Street, Repuignants and the investor class are laughing in our faces. Merry fucking christmas, asswipes; we've been played.
Ecstatic over Chambliss winning in Georgia. It's like being ecstatic over David Duke winning Grand Dragon.
Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich wrote a book about this.
I dont remember the title but he writes about a Large Democratic
wave that woul give Democrats a super majority.
I still think he is one the best when it comes to Economics.
This attempt to throw the little America auto makers and unions over board with bogus arguments over spending a measly 15 B, while they willingly gave their corporate buddies blow jobs and a Trillion dollar bail outwith barely a peep, proves what incestuous whores they really are at heart.
They don't care who screws who, as long as they're in on it.
But worse, the number of Republican Senators who voted against the automakers went beyond their own states interests. Those 35 Senators were not all from the South, and very definitively proved once and for all - that it never was conservative financial policies they were worried about. It was pure selfish ideological extremism.
I certainly hope the Obama administration deals with them accordingly.

The Clinton rules are back - media is back to their 8-plus-year-old habit of carrying water for their conservative corporate sponsors. How else to explain the 12/9 Business Week screed "Will Blagojevich Taint Obama?" We're back to that circus for the next 4 or 8 years.
By voting with our wallet and SPAMMING them with our discontent.
The Republican party is as pathetic as the pundits we see on TV, and the cable shows that carry their water.
Repigs can kiss my butt. I don't pity them one bit, if I had my way they would be outlawed for the thieves and racists they are.
Oh they're pathetic to be sure but after 2-4 years of Democratic dominance when people see that nothing much has changed but the semantics - they'll switch back ... because these parties are the problem and there's no viable alternative - merely a seesaw between the two. Both worthless, both corrupt, both corporate owned.
I think it has to do with the particular crop at hand. This crop of Repugs is particularly nasty, and it has shed all it's less nasty parts so it's quite a beast right now. The elephant in the room has become a fire breathing dragon.
Is there a major and secretive Christofascist conspiracy to deconstruct America's domestic and foreign sovereignty, and they'll do whatever it takes for more power, regardless of what the US Constitution says? If so or not, I sure am getting sick and tired of them setting their radical right-wing, Christofascist agenda as they keep on lying about Jesus, the man they mistaken for being God or God's incarnate coming back, when it has been proven wrong over and over again. Still, the Republicans and Christofascists still insist that certain things will happen, even after it has been disproven and exposed as a lie. Goebbles method sure is alive and well!
The sooner the dems and Obama can roll back these Christofascist policies, the more congress and the people will be more in control as a more transparent government, and not an ideological vacuum.
The GOP must just go away, crawl under the rock they use to worship satan with.
Your president outst a CIA agent, you protected him. He lied about a war which led millions to their untimely death, you defend him. You allow spying on American citizens, made torture an American trait, you destroyed our economy, you destroyed the American dream of owning a home, you reward wall street with billions ask nothing of them, you are destroying main street hard working Americans for your petty ideological views, you are a blight and cancer in America. Go away, take Bush and Chaney and Aschroft and the whole lying bunch with you, just go already. Everything you touch is infected with your venom.
Don't forget Palin, Please don't forget Palin.
Just go. Did mention where, oh sorry. To Hell.
It's stacked with right-wingers, especially at the federal level. This is one big reason we have the biggest prison population in the world, and it's not something that's going to change quickly.
Funny how this important point didn't get in the article, and has yet to appear in any comments so far.
some synonyms for big....
The Republican party has actually been on the decline since 1996, two years after their storied "Gingrich Revolution" of 1994. In fact, their '94 majority win in the Senate was a fluke. An unusually high number of Democratic Senators were retiring that year and, therefore, 6-7 seats were up for grabs without a Democratic incumbent to defend it. That's the amount of Senate seats the Reps gained in '94.
After that, the GOP lost Congressional seats in '96, lost a remarkable number of additional seats in '98 (at a point in a presidential term when the party outside the White House typically gains 20 seats!), lost MORE seats in 2000.
We KNOW over a half million more Americans voted for a Democrat vs a Republican for president in 2000 regardless of the questionable outcome.
The ONLY reason the Republicans held on to their Congressional numbers and added a couple more in 2002 and Bush got re-elected in 2004 is because of their expert fear mongering and demagoguery of 9/11 and the Iraq War.
The American REJECTION of the Republican Party continued in 2006...BIGTIME...and again in 2008...BIGTIME.
The trend of American rejection of the Republican Party started just two years after they gained a fluky majority control in '94, has continued ever since and was briefly interrupted in 2002 and 2004 ONLY because of the American tradition of not changing party control in Congress or the White House at a time of war.
Which, of course, is the reason Bush TOOK us to war in Iraq no matter what the intel was telling him.
Didn't either Nixon or Hoover result in the downfall of the GOP? Nixon certainly influenced devisive politics, and the first great depression occurred under Hoover's watch.
There hasn't really been a decent GOP president since either Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, or possibly Eisenhower.
