Rep. Alan Grayson appeared on Democracy Now! to discuss his bill, “The Public Option Act,” which allows people under sixty-five to buy into Medicare. The bill has attracted fifty co-sponsors:

REP. ALAN GRAYSON: I’ve introduced a simple three-and-a-half-page bill that opens up Medicare to anybody who wants it. If you want it and you pay for it, it’s yours. It’s that simple. It’s open to everybody under the age of sixty-five, whether or not you’re handicapped. And you pay the same amount as other people your age would pay.

And the reason to do this is because we need a public option. We need an option that doesn’t involve putting us at the tender mercies of insurance companies, particularly if there’s a mandate to do so. A lot of people feel that there is a fundamental conflict of interest between themselves and private insurance companies. The private insurance companies make money by denying you the care that you need to be healthy, and sometimes to stay alive. And a lot of people are just sick of it.

So the way to get beyond that is to open up Medicare, which is now available to only one-eighth of the population, to anybody who’s willing to pay for it. And it makes perfect sense when you think about it. I mean, we don’t say the federal highways are only open to senior citizens. And the Medicare provider network is an enormously valuable, expensive thing that we’ve created with federal tax dollars that ought to be open to everyone, not just seniors.

AMY GOODMAN: And how does this fit into the major piece of legislation that will or—I don’t know would even pass—won’t be voted on by the House?

REP. ALAN GRAYSON: My hope was that we would vote not only on the Senate bill, which doesn’t have a public option, not only on the reconciliation amendment, which probably will not have a public option, but that we’d also vote on this, that there’d be three votes instead of two votes. And if we voted on this and we passed it, then it would be presented to the Senate and subject to reconciliation in the Senate, so that we could end up with a public option.

AMY GOODMAN: Now?

REP. ALAN GRAYSON: Now.

AMY GOODMAN: Right, but now?

REP. ALAN GRAYSON: And if not, then it’s something to build for in the future.

ANJALI KAMAT: And would you support the bill even if your bill doesn’t go through?

REP. ALAN GRAYSON: Well, if you’re talking about the Senate bill combined with the reconciliation fix, the answer is yes, because that’s a bill that saves lives and saves money. And I feel that to do that, to deny 30 million Americans the insurance that they would have under that bill, the Senate bill with the reconciliation fix, would be cutting your nose to spite my face. So I would be very reluctant to vote against a bill that will end up doing so much good for the Americans who don’t have insurance and also help to restrain the growth, the large growth, of premiums for those who do, and make insurance manageable for people and establish certain minimum standards. Those are all good things to do.

But I think it’s a better thing to do to combine all of those things with the public option. We’ve heard all year long from the Democratic leadership and from the President that we need a public option to provide competition to insurance companies where there is no competition. All over the country, including many places in Florida, we have markets where insurance companies have 80 percent of the market, if there’s only one or two of them. So it’s a monopoly or it’s an oligopoly for 80 percent of the market or more. And those insurance companies charge you whatever they want, and they give you whatever little care they can get away with. And that’s true all over the country. If Medicare was available to anybody who was willing to pay for it, then in a place where there was an insurance company monopoly there’d be two choices. In a place where there are two choices already, there’d be three choices. And that’s going to be a dramatic improvement .

UPDATE: John Amato

Alan Grayson is a Blue America 2010 candidate and we're very pleased about his proposal. Don't forget to throw a few bucks his way because he's got a huge target on his back.

Graayson on Ed Schultz says now that he has 80 co-sponsers.

they seem to be piling on..

there is nothing about this that the GOPers and the corporatists can reasonably object to. But, they will.

But this is just superfluous anyway because this reform bill is already great!

This corporate health & Drug WRITTEN bill do for you and ME...

Not a d... Thing unless you are in with the people who will receive free health (pay by me and others) for this bill..

If does not lower my policy price , but it will cut some test I will receive under their title of UNNECESSARY test..

If does force me to pay for the increase price which I will be charged for the profit of the health and drug profit..

Why are forced to buy this piece of crap from the health companies , because they know d... well we would not pay the price they are increasing their piece of crap to..

They are not only forcing some to buy this piece of crap so they can give or subside it for others,,, giving over 30 million NEW policies to the empires but will do as they d... well please in the name of a historical bill for Obama and the democrats... This bill will also insure the defeat of the democrats in the coming elections..

People which rejoice at this disaster tell me what in the h... is in this bill that hurts the health and drug companies ,,,,, NOT A D>>> THING THEY WROTE IT>>>>

Obama, Emanuel have Phonies and have destroy our democrat party with their arrogants and deceit..

Emanuel uses the purse string to force the progressives to vote for their corporate BS and to elect republicans and other people which will vote for their corporate republican policies and give them complete control of the democratic party..

Look at all the persons on MSN that said they were for the public or single payer option , because it was the only way to give the health & drug companies competition...
But MSN including ED who switch his opinion from public option to the lobbyist written bill are attacking anyone which says they were or are against it..

I just wonder what type of attacks Obama through the advise of Emanuel on Dennis Kucinich.

Dennis is the only democrat which has time and time again stood up and spoke out for the middle class and average Americans..

It is a shame that the democratic party has been taken over by the likes of Emanuel and the centrists with the use of our political campaign contributions..

The news media , republicans and democrats can do and say what they wish,,,,, But this is a class war and the middle class and other Americans are losing their a...

The democratic party has become a joke and become the left hand of the corporate - republican party which has always attack working Americans..

who could possibly believe Rahm Emanuel is a centrist?

Who ever heard of a militarist, corporatist centrist?

1) You pay in, so now Medicare is being funded
2) You get discount health-care that is already established, this puts pressure on insurance companies to get competitive
3) The bill is 4 pages long so anyone can read it in a few minutes.

What could be simpler? Remember often the best ideas are the simplest ones.

It's backdoor socialism! They're trying to cram this legislation up our 'you-know-whats'!... They want to cram us from both sides! What don't you understand about freedom?!? I'm pretty sure 'Medicare for all' is how Hitler got started. It's against the will of the people who don't know what's in the bill! 103% of doctors will quit if we pass this. This will multiply the deficit by 426,000 times, just like O'bomb-a did in his first week in office! We must impeach him before he turns us over to his socialist masters! This bill will make America less safe! He'll indoctrinate our children into being healthy! We need a reduction in the lower classes, not more people to take care of! It's a scheme to give Nancy Pelosi all of our credit card numbers! This is exactly like what Atilla the Hun would do! Get used to speaking European, comrades! Freedom! Liberty! Socialism! Boogie-boo! Blaugh! BLAUGH!!!!

Stop stealing their thunder, Captain!

This is nothing more than deceit and BS... They know that this will never come to a vote and from the very first Obama , Emanuel and the centrists democrats started their behind close door meeting the Public option or any item which would have hurt the health & drug empires was off the table and a joke to them..

They have been paid well for the support and help for all the corporate empires..

You have to see that the republicans and elite have used their power to control both parties,,,, because now there is no such thing as a people's party....

There is the right wing corporate republican party and then their is the left wing of the republican party called the demo-centrists republican party...

I would not be able to hold my nose tight enough to pull the lever for the stinging democrats and I know d... well I would not for the corporate republican party..

I didn't vote for Hillary because after Kucinich & Dean were taken out by the news media and democrat leader I figured that Hillary was to centrists for me...

But I be d... if Obama didn't pull the biggest deceit on us when he claim to be a person which were for the American citizens , but was pimping for the corporations all the time..

Hillary pegged Obama right when she said Obama had nothing but a speech and most of his contents was taking from other people's speeches or saying...

Captainapathy's views sadly cement my long held views about the
ignorance of the average US citizen who goes to school mostly
to have FUN.First off,Hitler didn't initiate Healthcare for all,Chancellor von Bismarck was responsible for that in the
latter part of the 19th century and what a great relief that
was for the country-Medicare for all was started in THIS
country,duh!!!and what,pray tell,is a" European"language???

extensive vocabulary than: Boogie-boo and Blaugh.(???)
As for his much praised Liberty and Freedom the poor souls

"Reform" in America means handing corporations a gigantic gift to the tune of trillions of dollars via a captive customer base, while tossing a few crumbs - such as the 'right' to buy insurance coverage in 4 years from a corrupt insurance cartel with ever escalating rates, if you can afford it - to the American people. If you're unable to buy it in the meantime, you have the right to die - such is the price of 'pragmatism' and freedom the American way.

back on unemployment thread, i answered your question, work has been busy, kids, etc.

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_green...

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about what seemed to be a glaring (and quite typical) scam perpetrated by Congressional Democrats: all year long, they insisted that the White House and a majority of Democratic Senators vigorously supported a public option, but the only thing oh-so-unfortunately preventing its enactment was the filibuster: sadly, we have 50 but not 60 votes for it, they insisted. Democratic pundits used that claim to push for "filibuster reform," arguing that if only majority rule were required in the Senate, then the noble Democrats would be able to deliver all sorts of wonderful progressive reforms that they were truly eager to enact but which the evil filibuster now prevents. In response, advocates of the public option kept arguing that the public option could be accomplished by reconciliation -- where only 50 votes, not 60, would be required -- but Obama loyalists scorned that reconciliation proposal, insisting (at least before the Senate passed a bill with 60 votes) that using reconciliation was Unserious, naive, procedurally impossible, and politically disastrous.

But all those claims were put to the test -- all those bluffs were called -- once the White House decided that it had to use reconciliation to pass a final health care reform bill. That meant that any changes to the Senate bill (which had passed with 60 votes) -- including the addition of the public option -- would only require 50 votes, which Democrats assured progressives all year long that they had. Great news for the public option, right? Wrong. As soon as it actually became possible to pass it, the 50 votes magically vanished. Senate Democrats (and the White House) were willing to pretend they supported a public option only as long as it was impossible to pass it. Once reconciliation gave them the opportunity they claimed all year long they needed -- a "majority rule" system -- they began concocting ways to ensure that it lacked 50 votes.

Change means a tax code that doesn’t reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it. I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.

If American taxpayers are financing this solution, you should be treated like investors. Wall Street and Washington should give you every penny of your money back once this economy recovers.

We cannot and will not simply bailout Wall Street without helping the millions of innocent homeowners who are struggling to stay in their homes.

American people should not be spending one dime to reward the same Wall Street CEOs whose greed and irresponsibility got us into this mess.

Mandate for Americans to buy health insurance

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/04/us/politics...

Mr. Obama raised the Clinton campaign’s ire late last week by charging in a voter mailing that “Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it... and you pay a penalty if you don’t.”
Mrs. Clinton argues that she can make premiums affordable for low-income workers by spending $110 billion on subsidies and cost-saving devices. Like Mr. Obama, she would pay for her plan primarily by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire for the wealthiest Americans. She would not allow exemptions from the insurance mandate, as Massachusetts does for those who cannot

The for-profit insurance companies need to go the way of the do-do bird. They bring NOTHING TO THE TABLE THAT SERVES THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Which is why this bill they are about to pass Sunday will prove to be the biggest social disaster in American history.

and isn't it just amazing that nobody bothered to have the CBO "score" HR-676, or even Grayson's HCR bill ?

and that that 60 vote hurdle in the Senate can now, somehow, be maneuvered around ?

or how any "Medicare For All" HCR is so non-viable, in spite of the for-profit "Medicare Advantage" programs ?

or even that any new HCR bill has been ordained to be "revenue neutral", in spite of other major taxpayer-funded programs to the contrary, like the MICC ?

It all boils down to this: the American people can no longer count upon politicians of either mainstream political party to look out for "We the People's" interests, except those rare occasions when there is a total overlap between the People's interests and those of the Crony Capitalism special interests.

I say "Screw both mainstream political parties. It's time to raise a People's Party -- fiscally conservative, socially liberal, liberal progressive, and unwaveringly populist."

However, this could be a separate Bill voted on immediately or within days of HCR passage, or if HCR fails, this could be an alternative. A superior alternative to boot. Good greif, after more than year, if this were to pass the all the lobbiests would croak.

Let's graph corporate donations to Democrats over the last 18 months.

The drug companies have put out ads to support this corporate health bill... After all it was written for and by them...

http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2010/03/17/p...

The brand name prescription drug lobby PhRMA has been holding back on further support for health care reform until they are sure the final reconciliation package is still to the liking of the drug industry. The announcement that PhRMA plans to drop $6 million in a final round of pro-reform ads is a good indication that they received strong assurances that their secret deals with the Obama administration will be protected. They keep telling us that the insurance companies do not want this bill ,,, but tell me WHY>>

If they did not want their bill passed they would be running ads 24/7 attacking it..

What would they not like about having 20 or 40 million new more policy holders , less test , higher premiums and still can exclude some people... The government (with our money) will supply them with a data base of all our medical records so they can determind what price to charge us.. free of charge...

Thanks for enlightening us with the obvious.

I see that since last Sat. it's actually 64 co-sponsors.

http://westorlandonews.com/2010/03/13/64-cosp...

And this article has the list of who they are. For those that care about little details like that.

Rich H's picture

crook of a congressman isn't on that list? I'm sure he's for the well being of his constituents.

You'll have to ask them. And I strongly suggest you do.

the impeachment of Bush I got audited. Coincidence? I don't think so.

I think I found your congressman, but I'm not sure. It might be Harry Reid.

A case actually could be made that the original Medicaid bill is discriminatory since it only allows non-disabled adults coverage if they have children. Discrimination against women with children is illegal, and therefore...
A sneaky, lovely, back-door public option.

What happened to Anthony Wiener? Did he auction off his balls to the highest bidder?

maybe he was poked in the congressional showers by a naked Rahm.

Isn't it interesting that all of a sudden Rachel has on all these right wing guests that she had a such a hard time getting.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

I've come to the conclusion that this should have been the Democratic strategy from the beginning.

They call it...too little too late.

But gosh it makes everyone feel all tingly inside.

It was thisclose...if only...if only...

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

More like this, please.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

revenue neutral to begin with ?? Tell me please, is the MICC revenue neutral ?? Does the MICC rake in as much money as taxpayers spend on this juggernaut ?? And if it is not revenue-neutral, and justified in the name of national security, then why is HCR not also considered a national security prerogative as well ??

When those "terrorists" we are fighting over there so we don't have to fight them over here finally arrive here in force, will our Healthcare Industrial Complex be stacking the dead and dying but uninsured up along our thoroughfares, waiting for the ox-carts rumbling by with the cry " Bring out your dead!" ??

If everyone were able to join the Medicare plan. Whatever, Americans would rather have the freedom to be controlled and manipulated by corporations.

The health and drug lobbyist has paid billions or dollars to the elected officials to make d... sure this never happens..

What really makes me mad a h... if for Obama , Emanuel or the democrats which get on the news and make statements that they could not pass a public or single payer option when it would save more money than any other item they could put in the health bill

Right off the top it saves most of the 30 plus percent the health company is taken from the top..

Now how many policies , now much an average policy cost X somewhere around 30 percent and now they are receiving 30 million new customers...

We are being feed BS with deceit on a 24/7 basis..

This is the same as why do we give money to the very criminals which stole our money in the banking empire so they could pay it to foreign countries and for their salaries and bonuses ...

I will never understand their BS of it save main street from destruction when we are still going down the tube while the ceo's are vacationing in foreign countries like Dubai...

In the class war we are losing more and more each and every day...

They throw us a ""paper string"" to be pulled out of the rising flood waters...

"Grayson has 50 sponsors ..." ... which is going exactly nowhere - wait and see. Do any of us really think it will?

They jerked us all around, and up and down and back and forth - for over a YEAR with the piece of shit "public Option" - and then they take it away ... "no - I'm sorry - this POS is too good for you."

I'm sick of being manipulated by congressional con artists. They can sit on it, I'm through with them.

Rep. Alan Grayson appeared on Democracy Now! to discuss his bill, “The Public Option Act,” which allows people under sixty-five to buy into Medicare. The bill has attracted fifty SEVENTY-SEVEN co-sponsors ..

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

Grayson's unwavering and uncritical support for AIPAC and the Zionist agenda in Occupied Palestine should be enough to discourage any self-respecting liberal, progressive or leftist from supporting his candidacy. Sure, he can play populist with the best of them, even call for withdrawal from Iraq, but when it comes to extending basic human rights to the victims of Israeli aggression and calling for a halt for the illegal annexation of other people's land, Grayson is MIA. I suppose this plays well with his Florida constituents, but it doesn't play well with me.

I hear your pain, but that's why I like him.... he's right on health care and even gets the East Jerusalem and Palestine question exactly right. My kind of guy. I'm in Oregon, but I wish I could vote for him.

Even if Grayson had 216 co-signers, the Corporate-control Senate and ObamaRahma will not let it happen.

You CAN make the case that Grayson's bill will be something Demos can run on to counter the upcoming Republican onslaught, esp. when the voting public starts to read this Insurance-Company Giveaway.
