Having It Both Ways: Republicans Take Credit for 'Pork' - In Stimulus Bill They Opposed
Of course, no one's really surprised, right? I just wonder if the Democratic communications staffers will kick into gear and capitalize on this kind of story:
WASHINGTON — Rep. John Mica was gushing after the House of Representatives voted Friday to pass the big stimulus plan.
"I applaud President Obama's recognition that high-speed rail should be part of America's future," the Florida Republican beamed in a press release.
Yet Mica had just joined every other GOP House member in voting against the $787.2 billion economic recovery plan.
Republicans echoed their party line over and over during the debate: "This bill is loaded with wasteful deficit spending on the majority's favorite government programs," as Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., put it.
But Mica wasn't alone in touting what he saw as the bill's virtues. Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, also had nice things to say in a press release.
Young boasted that he "won a victory for the Alaska Native contracting program and other Alaska small business owners last night in H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."
One provision would have made it harder for minority businesses to win contracts, and Young explained that he "worked with members on the other side of the aisle to make the case for these programs, and was able to get the provision pulled from the bill."
Yet later in the day Young — who recently told McClatchy that he would've included earmarks, or local projects, in the bill if it had been permitted — issued another statement blasting the overall measure.
"This bill was not a stimulus bill. It was a vehicle for pet projects, and that's wrong," he protested.

Since the truth works against their interests, the GOPigs continue to lie with impunity. Small wonder these toxic waste retards got bounced in November.
And I guess it's just too much work for CNN, et al to do some basic due diligence by fact checking, to them, if it's from a GOPer, it must be true.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."
Robert F. Kennedy
which i'm sure they did while drafting it.
The job of a jounalist, (I use that term with some regret) is to check the facts before reporting them. What's up Lou and Sean, can't do your jobs? Oh that's right, stupid question.
These slugs were bankrupt of ideas after 9/11 and Katrina. In both cases all they could do was mobilize hatred.
Their bankrupt ideas BANKRUPTED our country.
Now that we are in crisis they have NOTHING to offer this country... BANKRUPT of ideas once again!
They are TOAST in the next elections
"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Obama, not to praise him."
Or as Marlon Brando said it, "FFFF....Rummmmmns...ccooonnn...llll..mmmm...yrrrr...rrrr's."
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
same old tactics of hypocrisy. this is political posturing at it's best. Obama is trying to establish biPartisanship something that has been missing on capitol hill for some time. the (R) don't want to compromise yet they cry foul. partisan (R)/neocon politics as usual.
party before country every damned time.
we have "Democratic communications staffers"?
really? i mean, besides my favorite blogs?
Because they are never wrong, when they do it, just ask any gooper.
The Republicon Obstructionists are just plain, stark raving nuts. It is long past time for each and every one of them to have psychological evaluations.
"How would Reagan handle recession?" Do I need to go on? I don't see them all quite yet as the sad, crazy, abandoned, outcast celebrity, but I can hope.
A tax cut, what else? To Republics, a tax cut is the magic elixir that cures all ills. Reduce government, and let the free market fix the problem. Sadly, it is the only solution they know.
reports it as such over and over and the right wing repugs will hope that the propoagnda sinks in.. We need to let our reps know that we want them to enforce the laws preventing monopolies like the ones we have in publishing. Hopefully BO has a plan to correct this shit.
So it is up to every one of us here and everybody you can comment to about this hypocrisy!! Just keep passing it around. They have to be called out on it.
Ironic, ain't it
The piggish complaining about pork?
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
One man's pork is another man's bacon.
on jobs...
on money for education...
on funding for light rail...
on bridge and road construction...
on saving the economy...
on doing something to prevent a DEPRESSION.
That's a beginning on how to treat EVERY ONE OF THEM who will be running for re-election in 2010.
How can any of these be considered pork? I just don't understand these repugs reasoning on this.
The Repukes state they were "pet projects" but most everything mentioned above by Wesley was someones pet project. So what, as long as it puts people to work and leaves something after it's done. What does Wall Street ever leave behind we need something concrete for the next few years.
but obama said thier was no oink in his bill!i saw him say it! oh my!
The revisionist history-making has begun on the stimulus bill.
How long before David Gregory asks John Boehner where he got the idea for it?
Nice to know the Repubs are continuing their old strategy: If you say something often enough, it becomes the truth. Are their voters that stupid?
the bridge to nowhere was pure pork...an uneccessary outlay to benefit friends and chronies of a corrupt senator
then there is the pork of high speed rail...a project that will create jobs for years to come, and will ultimately be privatized and become an affordable alternative to air transport
i just cant fight anymore
if the american people cant see what the repugs want power (and it has nothing to do with helping america) then they never will

you have to ask???!!!!! I ended up turning off Morning Joe, and haven't even tried to watch Washington Journal this morning....I think the 'news people' are getting even 'stupid - er'...
this is the secret behind how Republicans can be right on everything. They have no core.
D.C. mantra: "My pet project is vital spending;your pet project is pork!—and to a great degree, all members of Congress follow this, though the GOPers seem to be more sanctimonious and hypocritical about it.
