You can always count on Tom Tancredo to say all kinds of insane things, but sometimes it's hard to tell if he just says them to get attention, which he obviously craves, or if he really believes the things he says.

Well, the other day at a campaign event for his pal, Republican Senate candidate and renowned Tea Partier Ken Buck (a favorite of Erick Erickson, too), Tancredo seemed quite aware of this confusion, and did his best to clear it up for us all:

Tancredo: What could be more important for you to do, really, if you think about this? Everything is at stake here. Everything.

I firmly believe with all my heart, you guys, although we have had many threats to our nation -- and we have gone through a whole lot of things, and survived many things. We -- I always say, you know, we survived the Civil War, we survived the Depression, we went through all -- we survived Bill Clinton, for heaven's sake!

But nothing -- I do not believe -- not the Soviet Union, when we were in, you know, that thirty-five year period leading up to the fall of the Soviet Union, thanks to Ronald Reagan, God bless him. [Applause]

...

But we had that threat, we survived it. Later, we found out we had another threat to our way of life, and that was Al Qaeda, and we found that out on 9/11.

But I firmly believe this -- it's not just, you know, some dramatic statement a person would make to get press or something or ink. I believe this with all my heart -- that the greatest threat to the United States today, the greatest threat to our liberty, the greatest threat to the Constitution of the United States, the greatest threat to our way of life, everything we believe in, the greatest threat to the country that was put together by the Founding Fathers, is the guy that is in the White House today.

It's actually a bit scarier to realize that people like Tancredo (and Beck, and Limbaugh, and Weiner Savage, and Palin, et al et al) really believe the things that come out of their mouths.

And you'll notice that everyone applauded.

Support Liberal Authors: Example #2 Dinesh D'Souza

180px-dsouza_f3a4f.jpg

I started this series using Doughy Pantload as the first example of how the conservative movement supports their authors. They make sure that even if they write pure fantasy accounts devoid of reality that it sells as non-fiction, the better to persuade the less-engaged out there of their warped point of view.

Is there a bigger recipient of wingnut welfare out there than Dinesh D'Souza? He's been at the trough of wingnut welfare his entire life, writing book after book for Regnery Publications blaming everything under the sun on liberals, secularism or godlessness, and gays. At least Beck isn't trying to make believe his new book is covering historical events. Okay....maybe HE is. Bad example.

Dinesh wrote a book that blames Liberals for 9/11 and claims that Bin Laden and I have the same agenda.

Timothy Noah makes Dinesh look like fool in Slate, if you need more. Dinesh D'Souza's Mullah Envy: A leading conservative thinker blames 9/11 on liberalism.

David Neiwert and I have written a book that isn't guided by the arrogance that we are part of a superior religion guiding us into the grace of Heaven and all you non-believing gays are destroying the culture of the world. Unlike Dinesh, we prefer to write a book based on facts.

Just a few other reasons out of a gazillion to support real authors...

Glenn Beck hosted one of his hourlong sessions before a studio audience talking about the role of heroes in American life. The consensus, both by Beck and his panelists, was that Americans no longer look up to their historic heroes the way they should. Instead, as Beck suggested, we have "Mao Tse Tung hanging in our White House."

Say again? Oh yeah -- the Obama administration is riddled with radical Marxist revolutionaries. Right. Tell that to progressives right now. Moron.

Anyway, Beck apparently draws the line when it comes to the possibility, heaven forfend, Obama might be regarded as a hero:

Beck: I'm a big visual guy. And if you look at the way Barack Obama was imaged -- he was, as a savior. He was, as a -- you look at it now, anybody notice -- you watch the newspaper, and you watch the photos of him coming out of the White House, almost always, they'll have a shot of him with the seal of the President -- you notice that? And it almost looks like a halo. They'll take a shot from the side, and he's standing there, and it looks like a Russian icon!

He's talking about the photos of the president that have been shot for some time now whenever there's a press appearance at the White House. And it didn't start with Obama:

Indeed, if we're suddenly all worried about presidents being made out to be heroes, you have to wonder where Beck was when W. strutted out to his "Mission Accomplished" photo-op:

Now that's what I call an action hero.

Fortunately, Obama has spared us any codpiece appearances.

Sean Hannity still wants his scalp. So he went and got the world's most famous harpy to help out.

He continued his groundless bashing of Kevin Jennings by bringing on Ann Coulter on his show last night. The hapless Kirsten Powers was little help, being a good Faux Democrat by largely agreeing with the venomous duo -- when all she needed to do was point out that the incident involved a young man of legal age.

This largely left Hannity free to find great import in the fact that William Ayers -- another longtime Hannity freakazoid obsession -- actually wrote a blurb for a book for which Jennings wrote the forward. Oooooh. Impressive. Pretty soon he's going to be doing diagrams on chalkboards.

And it left Coulter free to declare Jennings "another Ayers." And natter on about how depraved a person Jennings is.

But of course, they stopped short when reminded that what they were saying sounded a lot like gay-bashing. Heaven forfend the notion.

These people are insane. They really are trying to construct their own alternative reality. Which is fine, I suppose. But do they have to bother us with it -- let alone inflict it upon us?

The Wingnut Celebration of Ted Kennedy's Death

As Instaputz sez: This was inevitable. Edward Kennedy Dies, Wingnuts Cover Themselves in Glory.

Here's an example:

The Anchoress:

What can one do when one is likely unfit for heaven, but possesses just enough charity and love to stave off hell?...read on

But Hot Air's comment section is even lower. Here's two of the many sick ones.

Burn, you fat f**k.

{}

Normally peoples children should be off limits to ones attacks. But in the Kennedy family I’m reminded that a house infested with roaches is sometimes hard to kill off.

Comment sections are rough to control, but Malkin's requirements to register are incredibly tough and are often closed to the public. Ed tries to remain civil, but that didn't happen all too well.

Open Thread - Inside the C&L Studio Edition

C&L is actually a fairly large community. We get well over 100,000 discrete hits every day, but many of us consider each other long time friends even if we're really only digital 1's and 0's traveling through the ether. So I thought this would be a fun way to get to know one another a little better. Answer the following questions James Lipton asks of his guests on Inside the Actors' Studio, inspired by the French interviewer Bernard Pivot.

  1. What is your favorite word?
  2. What is your least favorite word?
  3. What turns you on?
  4. What turns you off?
  5. What sound or noise do you love?
  6. What sound or noise do you hate?
  7. What is your favorite curse word?
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
  9. What profession would you not like to do?
  10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Catching bin Laden (or not)

Fred Thompson’s reaction to today’s Osama bin Laden tape:

“Bin Laden is more symbolism than anything else,” he said.

Mitt Romney on bin Laden:

[Romney] said the country would be safer by only “a small percentage” and would see “a very insignificant increase in safety” if al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was caught because another terrorist would rise to power. “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person,” Romney said.

Bush on bin Laden:

“I truly am not that concerned about him.”

At what point did the GOP decide that bin Laden no longer matters? And how would the right respond if Dems made similar comments?

Bush's interrupts Vacation for

Bob makes a great point. President Bush was more than willing to interrupt another one of his vacations to jump on a plane, travel thousands of miles to Washington, sign Republican legislation on the Terry Schiavo case and fly thousands of miles back to Crawford all for the circus clowns, but interrupting a bike ride to take a walk down the road to meet with Cindy was just too much " hard work" for him. When it comes to God's Own Circus, the President will move heaven and earth.
