During Hardball's love in with Ann Coulter----Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of John Edwards called in and asked her to stop lowering the bar with personal attacks in our country's political debate. Coulter was not ready for this one...

Coulter denies attacking Edwards on GMA (Coulter:...if I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”) and then talks over her as Elizabeth tries to get through...She tells Ann that her ilk debases political dialogue---Oh, really? Ann tries to spin it that Edwards is telling her to stop talking which is of course---wrong. Elizabeth also tells her that she's the mother of the son who died and called her out on Coulter's column that said this about John Edwards:
If you want points for not using your son's death politically, don't you have to take down all those "Ask me about my son's death in a horrific car accident" bumper stickers?
Ann's defense is that she wrote it three years ago....

As if because it was three years ago it is ok. It obviously still bothers the hell out Ms. Edwards. She probably almost cries every time she thinks about her son. And that is the response that Coulter has. A halfway decent person would have said "You are right about that and I truly apologize for it. It was below the belt and sometimes we say some things that we should not." But that is not Coulter’s style. She is a c*nt.
And I have had enough of this conversation because she makes me sick to my stomach.

The things that she has said over the years, not just about John, but about other candidates, it lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So, I'd like to use the opportunity, which I don't get much 'coz Ann and I don't hang out with the same ppl, [Ann mumbles: 'coz I don't have enough money], to ask her poliltely to stop the personal attacks.
Ann: So I made a joke lets see.. six months ago, and as you point out, they've been raising money off of it for six months.
Mathews: But this is yesterday morning, what you said about him.
Ann: I didn't say anything about him actually either time.
Elizabeth: Ann you know that's not true, and what's more it's been going on for some time..
Ann [laughing]: .. and I don't mind you trying to raise money. It's better this than giving 50,000 dollars speeches to the poor, just to use my name on the webpages.
Elizabeth: I'm asking you.. I'm asking you politely..

Elizabeth: That's not legitimate political dialogue. It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you are using this kind of language.
Audience Member shouts: Let John Edwards make this call
Ann: Yeah why isn't John Edwards making this call ? (laughter from the audience)
Mathews: Well you wanna respond ? We'll end this conversation.
Elizabeth: I haven't talked to John about this call...
Ann: I think this is just another attempt to.. (makes a face)
Elizabeth: I'm making this call as a mother. I'm the mother of that boy who died. My children participate. These young people behind you are the age of my children. You are asking them to participate in a dialogue that's based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues, and I don't think that's serving them or this country very well.

I don't like this. It just gives her more publicity. That's why she gets called back instead of Randi, because we've made her into this huge figure. We need to be ignoring her instead and contacting shows like Hardball telling them not to have her back on.

I am all for freedom of speech, but for the life of I don't understand how anyone would even have Coulter on their show and give her a platform from which he spews her hate.
It's even harder to understand why anyone would pay their hard earned dollars reading one of her books.

I couldn't take my eyes off her fans in the back ground. One of them even has a sign asking ann to marry him. Good God, do we have some stupid people in this world. I would classify it as "Satan worship"..but I guess that's "what makes the world go 'round", eh?

#87 - Seems like Ann's fans showed up in good numbers. As for Matthews, despite his many infractions and his Clinton-hate, I think you're right that he seemed embarrassed to be there. Note the final 30 seconds of the clip -- Matthews pushes back on Coulter over her writing about Hillary's "chubby legs" and Monica Lewinsky's "chubbiness". When Coulter waffles about "context", he audibly sighs and hangs his head going into the break. (Note also the Coulter fan just over her shoulder opening talking and sneering at Matthews.)
There's something here that just might be important. The event was held live, with Coulter surrounded by her fans. This is surely one of the few times if not the first time for Chris Matthews to see the wingnut base up close and personal. Will it change who he decides to have on the show?
(In fact, is it even his decision? He seemed sorry to be out there.)
