David Gregory translates for Coulter...
By John Amato Wednesday Jun 27, 2007 7:27pm
I saw this early in the morning when my coffee was brewing. David Gregory, fresh off of his Rappin' with Rove experience had to act as a translator for Annie. Thanks David for deciphering the girl in a black dress for us. Media Matters and AmericaBlog picked up on it as well...Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage have a call in for his services...

GREGORY: You said rather pointedly that you think Ann Coulter is guilty of hate speech against your husband and others as well. If you strip away some of the inflammatory rhetoric against your husband and other Democrats, the point she's trying to make about your husband, Senator Edwards, running for the White House is in effect that he's disingenuous, especially on the signature issue of poverty, whether it's a $400 haircut or taking big money to speak in front of a poverty group. If you, again, strip away the inflammatory rhetoric, is that a real point of vulnerability that you have to deal with in this campaign?

Hey David, Just strip away the references of my calling for your assasination....
You get my point. And no, David, I am not calling for your assasination.
Boy has David Gregory gone conservative or what. I guess he wants a promotion really badly.
No David. What Edwards should do is join the 911 commission, back out because it interferes with his for-pay speaking engagements and then run a campaign based on security in a post 911 world like Guiliani. Now that would be the height of hypocrisy. Maybe you would want to point that one out.
david gregory is a dick jockeying for some new career position (The Today Show, maybe?)
Gregory: If you, again, strip away the inflammatory rhetoric, is that a real point of vulnerability that you have to deal with in this campaign?
Only in the eyes of morons and corporate suckups like you, apparently.
Elizabeth Edwards is the exact opposite of Ann Coulter.
And to think! All we had to do was look beyond the hateful rhetoric to the insightful, poignant inner message.
Heavens, aren’t my cheeks red! When viewed under this new lens of reason a whole new world of reasoned political debate springs to view!
*grins*
Who would so lower themselves by apologizing for Coulter's hatespeech? There is nothing good about saying such evil. If there is a point, then she can make it in a civil manner. Liberal media my ass.
Coulter needs a translator? What... can't she speak English? If that's the case, then maybe we should make English a mandatory language and extradite those who refuse to speak it.
Gregory owes his job to the good graces of General Electric. Like Russert, there's a reason he makes the obscene amount of money he does, and integrity has nothing to do with it.
I am now waiting for all the 'love' for David Gregory to come from people here now.
I don't think Dave Gregory is being an apologist for Coulter at all. I do, however, believe that he's used Manne Coulter's comments to get something out that he wanted to address himself.
So if you strip away the hypocrisy, the craven pandering to this administration, the transcription of white house press releases, the phony "balance" of perspectives, the laziness to do actual reporting--then maybe we might see genuine journalism?
Again, missing the opportunity for a direct response: Fuck, no, David. And thank you for bringing up the haircut again. It's relevant in the way that George Bush's service in the military is relevant to his being a credible role model for the young men and women returning from the battle-ground in precious little pieces.
NBC has been trying to paint a happy face on the Coulter interview. Gregory was "just following orders."
David Grwegory fails to appreciate the reality that The Adam's Apple of the SS has no substance behind the inflammatory rhetoric, she makes no broader points, she is a bomb-thrower being passed off by her handlers and apologists as a harmless jester or a clown when in fact she is, as it relates to the state of political discourse in the media, the epitome of the mythological harpy, screeching, scratching and shitting all over it
I can only assume that she must have photos of some incident in which she conquered him with the same large appliance she uses on Tweety, and he must have enjoyed it to be so willing to play the sockpuppet and go to bat for her.
It's sad to see how this man lost his balls.
Disingenuous? A psychopathic Serial Killer is not disingenuous when he wants to murder everyone but himself. You can accuse a person of being "disingenuous" when he does not want to bear the burden of societal injustice all by himself.
In other words, you're a prick, Dick.
Hypocrite is a synonym for assassin? Where exactly did Gregory learn English?
So David finally decided to ask some tough questions; too bad for us it wasn't to Bush and Cheney about the war, WMD, Gitmo, firing of the US attorneys, Valerie Plame, the list just goes on or maybe he could have asked about Laura's $700 hairdo.
That $400 haircut is the best example of trickle down economics I have seen in 20 years. True conservatives understand that. Those who criticize it simply hate Ronald Reagan.
NO! David "If you strip away some of the inflammatory rhetoric against your husband and other Democrats" there is nothing there at all, nill, nada, zip, zero, NOTHING! Name a single orignal good point she has ever made. I don't have to agree with the point just name a single good point she came up with that wasn't based on false assumptions or even was based on false assumptions. Anything?
So the rightwing whackos are so upset at a $400 haircut but not about a $400 a night male prostitute in the White House? Maybe because they think the prostitute is worth it?
MSNBC long with NBC are trying to tone down the liberal bias (truth) as they fear more attacks by Murdoch's NY Post. Last week the New York Post published a rumor that NBC paid Paris Hilton $1 million for an exclusive post-jail interview. NBC responded by stating that it wasn't true at all. Seeing how Bill'O takes pot shots at NBC, as well, whenever he gets a chance leads me to believe that NBC is trying to appease Murdoch and fend off more smear tactics. That's my explanation as to what happened with Coulter and now David's remarks. The man has no spine. I think Olberman is the only one with testicular power at that company.
when you strip away david gregory's clothes you just have a pile of steaming crap.
give me a break, hate speech is hate speech. stop spinning the lies and hate crap from the rightwingnut neocons. you can't make roses out of hot stinking sh+t.
So when I said "David Gregory can suck my ass," what I actually meant was he's an atrocious journalist. Got it.
I don't know why the Edwards even want to put themselves through all this shit. That alone speaks volumes - they must actually really CARE about our country - or do they just want the glory of the White House position? Somehow I think it's the former. My biggest concern about John Edwards is that he doesn't grasp the dilemmas facing the middle class as we work harder and harder and our money is worth less and less.
When I watched this my head exploded when he goaded Mrs. Edwards into saying the Coulter-ish vitriol is a problem on the left as well as the right. Of course, no left-wing Coulter equivalent was named, because there is none. There's only one Ann Coulter. Hooray!
Gregory has done some good questioning of Der Furrer, but this is plain fcuked up. Strip away the inflammatory rhetoric?....................... The rhetoric is the bleeding point you numbskull! Oh to be so Beltway!
Next he'll explain how Mussolini made the trains run on time.
[Deleted. Tone it down]
I dunno, I look at David Gregory's gerbil face, and it doesn't surprise me that all I hear is squeak, squeak, squeak.
Gregory is a despicable punk. He has been trying to figure out where he fits forever. Perhaps he is the legendary "missing link". Obviously kissing the right wing's ass still hasn't obtained the pinnacle for him. He impersonates as a "journalist", and comes over as a total flop in that regard. He goes to bed every night wishing that he only had more chances in the last 24 hours to kiss Rove's ass. What a shame that David Bloom died and this worthless piece of shit wannabe was handed his position by NBC. This guy makes Chris Matthews look like a credible journalist.
6 This Guy Says:
And to think! All we had to do was look beyond the hateful rhetoric to the insightful, poignant inner message.
Heavens, aren’t my cheeks red! When viewed under this new lens of reason a whole new world of reasoned political debate springs to view!

LMAO........................................
He couldn't ask the similar question without crediting and mentioning Coulter? You want to ask Edwards about his legitmacy on the issue of poverty? Go ahead! However, by using Coulter as cover, he goes into irrelevant questioning derived from the very same hate speech. By doing so, he emboldens and rewards Coulter's tactics, and as a consequence, indirectly gives EVERYTHING she says legitimacy. Coulter's constant TV appearances and citing her hate speech just reduces political discourse and stops from talking about the real issues. Thus, proving to conservative operatives that this is the way to spread their propaganda! The media's constant negligence to hold them account just shows that inflammatory rhetoric works! In fact, the media actually plays off it, providing a nice big smoke screen! Well done, David Gregory!
the thing that most scares mann coulter and her ilk (fascist repigs) would be if there actually was a liberal (if you can call a Democrat one) who walked the walk.
That's what scares them about Gore so much.
From the way Gregory is acting lately i would say his corporate masters have something on him.
I think Mrs. Edwards point was the inflammatory rhetoric you dumbs**t
Elizabeth Edwards = Class act.
Ok, How bout this? "Strip away the inflammatory rhetoric" and what you have is a fascist who looks like a tranny in a black cocktail dress.
Elizabeth Edwards was top class in this interview.
She looked well but sadly I fear her health is detioriating.
Coulter is not fit to clean the Edwards' toilet.
I hate your country.
Hurry up and get a Democrat back in The White House.
Then the rest of us in Europe can welcome you back to the "family of civilised nations"
David was spanked by the White House at a "press" conference. I think he is trying to get his "neutral" credentials back. Or, should I say "neutered" credentials. Only in America could the press turn this around and make it look like Ann is being bullied and used by Elizabeth Edwards and her husband. We are doomed.
nochickenhawk at 31, David Gregory as "the legendary missing link". Hmmmm. You know, there is something very simian looking about David.
One of their biggest questions were, "How can the Edward"s campaign raise funds off Ann' derogatory comments?"
Hell. why can't the Edward's campaign make lemomade out of the lemon A.C. keeps serving up.
Yaknow, David Gann- I mean Gucker- Gregory, If it was a really valid point,
IT COULD STAND ALONE, BY ITSELF, WITHOUT MALIGNANT ICHOR POURED OVER THE TOP OF IT now, couldn't it?
David Gregory is a real dick.
Gregory sounded like he was after Tony Snow's job.
I have nothing against Elisabeth Edwards. But watch the clip http://www.breitbart.tv/html/2258.html
and see the context of what Coulter said. She was commenting on a joke made by Bill Maher when Bill joked that he wished Cheney would have died in the explosion when he was overseas.
BTW, Edwards campaign is dead in the water.
I didn't recognize Elizabeth Edwards at first when I saw the beginning of this clip. She sure is looking great for a person who is fighting cancer.
She is definitely First Lady material, well spoken, gracious, and intelligent.
David Gregory has turned out to be a real neoCon wonder. And what is up with Bill Maher and mAnn Coulter?
Oh David Gregory, have you fallen so far everyone treats you with contempt?
Isn't this the same guy who stood up to Pres Bush about changing the military code of conduct?
I just don't get the attacks on Edwards... truely.
I don't care that he paid $400 on a haircut. I'd rather he walked off Air force one looking presidential than like a cross between Gary Busey and Bobcat Goldthwait...
I do care that for some strange reason some members of our society think it's ok to attack him on his stand on poverty because he has the audacity to pull himself up and make a comfortable life for his family.
Shouldn't we actually be applauding someone for this achievement?
I used to think David was one of the good guys. Such a shame.
I would love to see what David Gregory would say after he is waterboarded for an hour or so, or would he just snivel and cry like the big corporate Faggot that he is!
I would love to see him get caught by a terrorist and beheaded live on..
Anne Coulter: a pathetic excuse for a human being. She's the anti-christ: bringing people together by Hate!
"Dick" Gregory has shown himself to be shallow and self-serving. He must be looking at an anchor job on FUX News. At any rate, he should wipe the cum off his chin before going on the air.
Fucking ass-hole.
Just watched it. Is David Gregory really such an ass?
I hope Elizabeth Edwards' health isn't deteriorating. She has to take constant chemo, so maybe it has changed her appearance.
Gregory can now count himself as being an impetus for donations to Edward's campaign. I was going to sit this round out as far as making a contribution but his absolute stupidity in his questions to Elizabeth Edwards was the final straw. It's awful to have to hear it from a shrill shill like Coulter but now from someone who should be asking insightful, fact-seeking questions is beyond what I can stomach. As always, Elizabeth Edwards brings intelligence and class to every interview. Hope her example inspires everyone who currently thinks stupid is cute.
Gregory's reputation isn't even worth $400 anymore.
An interesting angle..if you are rich you can not speak for the poor. Its bullshit but lets accept it for the moment. If you are a combat dodger you cannot advocate war...? That one aint coming up much.
Gregory is just being an asshole here. The haircut is a GOP narrative and after a review of what such narrative promotion has given America you have to ask just what the hell does Gregory think he is doing? WMD's, Immigrants taking over America, Gay Agenda...all got their foot in the door via this method. Fuck this clown.
Richard
David Gegory=corporate jackass
the only good thing to come out of this farsical Coulter brouhaha, and the phony and/or misplaced indignant histrionics, the bizarre and irrational obsession, here along with MSM, is that Edwards looks to be the biggest fool, and his campaign will sputter out.....idiot provocateurs like Coulter should be ignored, not pandered to and exploited....Edwards has been hoisted on his own (or his wife's) petard....it's about time...he has, remarkably, become a less likable and credible candidate than Kucinich....
Richard @ 56:
Yeah, I love that. So I guess the poor can never be spoken for by any candidate because we know all candidates have to be filthy rich in order to run. Maybe the people who insist on saying it's "disingenuous" for him to splurge on something but speak for the poor could get behind a law that ensures all candidates have equal money for their campaigns. Then a member of the middle or lower classes could run and represent these people. You know...just so we don't have any candidate mucking up things by speaking for some group they're no longer part of.
I found it interesting that Gregory only alluded to hate speech from the left without actually naming or quoting anyone.
Like Tweety, Gregory must really has a taste for conservative cock, as tiny and shriveled as it is these days.
I'm sorry, was that my outside voice?
Remember Gregory dancing with Rove at the white house stenographers ball a while back? Nuff said.
Boy, strip away that inflammatory rhetoric, and that Hitler/McCarthy/Duke fella had some good ideas.
Jeez, it's hard not to despair.
RB @ 45:
Bill Maher did not say he wished Cheney had died. Not even close to what he said. GE employee David Gregory's comparing Maher's comment to Coulter's is ludicrous.
what a little man he is...It is hard to think of which face you whould have to look at when you talk with him.
putz. That haircut TP is a hannity echo chamber.
Gracefully, Mrs Edwards kept her poise.
David Gregory is a media whore opportunist, who will do whatever MSNBC tells him to do for his paycheck. Right after Bush started the War and it was popular, Gregory was out there shilling for the White House. Then when the war started to go bad, he started to turn against Bush. Gregory is nothing but a two bit whore, and a disgarce as a newscaster. Turn him off when he's on, he's garbage!
If Elizabeth Edwards makes daily speeches around the country, her husband will win the white house.
She was not intimidated by Gregory's idiotic remarks. I am sure Gregory felt his empty suit after the conversation.
Grow up, Gregory!
i swear to god...if you look very closely at gregory, you can see mann coulter's head bobbing up and down in his lap
what an asshat he is
MSNBC is in bed with Hillary and Lieberman.
A divided home fails eventually.
If you strip away Gregory's hair, scalp and cranium, is there anything left in the remaining cavity?
Now THAT is a potential first lady that would make me PROUD!
The next time Ghoulter does one of these interviews with her own crowd for a backdrop, we ought to get the girls from Code Pink to dress up in slutty little black dresses and long blonde wigs in front of the cameras and have them hurling hate filled epithets at everyone as they call themselves Coulter's Ghoulters.
wow, DAVID you are a fucking asshole. how long do we have to debate as to whether or not we call a spade a spade.
OMG IS DAVID G. REALY THAT STUPID?????????
I can do a better job of 'translating' for Coulter than Gregory did.
'If you ignore everything she says, pay no attention to her words or attitude, and discount her raging psychoses, Ann Coulter is really not all that bad'.
Translation: 'If you put a sound-proofed bag over her head, wrap her like a mummy, shoot her full of thorazine and other sedatives, she could make an acceptable dummy at your next bridge tournament'.
Somewhere at sometime in a world far away the conversation could have gone like this:
"If you strip away some of the inflammatory rhetoric that Herr Hitler uses against the Jews and the Democratically elected opposition the point that he's trying to make is that these were the people responsible for our defeat in the Great War and for the destruction of our economy....Is that a real point of vulnerability??...."
David ...David...David..tsk.. tsk.. tsk
David Gregory, A MAJOR LEAGUE A**HOLE. Another Bush Butt Boy.
These MSM whores all sell out. He's just the latest.
That is some heavy duty reporting there. Strip away all of the rhetoric. Ignore that she made fun of your dead child, called your husband a fag and claimed to want your husband to be killed by terrorists and what she is really saying is that your husband paid too much for a haircut. He is a hypocrite to claim to be for the poor while not being one of them, much like men who spoke up for women's rights, but didn't bother to actually become women.
Hello?
If Edwards were a republican and someone complained about how much he spent for a haircut, the answer would be that it's no ones damn business how much of HIS money he spends to get his hair cut in a free market economy, and all the conservatives would say Amen.
It's my understanding that the number one deterrent/eliminator of bullying is the person being bullied and those around them speaking out against it.
That's all Ann Coulter is. A bully.
http://www.need2know.co.uk/beatbullying/howtostopbullying_bullied.html
"Breaking the silence is the most important part in fighting back against bullying."
Go Elizabeth!
I get tired of the notion we should take Ann into "context" based on Bill Maher asking if the world would be better off if Cheney had been taken out by terrorists.
Cheney has been one of the biggest warmongers and is therefore responsible for the deaths of thousands.
Edwards wants the end to war and the end to death.
For Coulter to merely think she can take Maher's rhetorical question about Cheney to justify her offensive statement directed out-of-the-blue against Edwards simply shows the lack of logic used by the right.
I apologize for not elevating the conversation BUT, that guy is a shit for brains. If Ms Edwards is ever so similarly shit for brians I will call her the same. Some how I don't think I'll be wearing out my fingers.
I think this need for a "translation" of Coulter's remarks makes Elizabeth Edwards point exactly. If Ms. Coulter means to question the integrity of this candidate, then she should say just that instead of calling him a "fag" or making some other baseless and immature personal attack. That's all Elizabeth Edwards was asking for.
Elizabeth was great. I don't care what he said because it gave her a chance to come out with her points. I do wish they would quit worrying about how much money John Edwards spends - I don't see that as being incongruous with his fighting to alleviate poverty - he's not a monk who has taken a vow of poverty.
And - when Jimmy Carter and his wife DIDN'T spend money - they gave them a bad time about that.
Gregory wouldn't recognize class if she walked up an introduced herself in capital letters........the new version of reporters apparently have put themselves out as prostitutes to corporatism in any form. They really don't know how to act when someone with definite class, intelligence and directness is doing truthful, direct commenting. Gregory certainly had a problem as he tried to turn it around and have her say something he could jump on and when it didn't happen he didn't quite know how to handle. He's nothing but a corporate shill. Yawn!
Gregory would eat a mile of neo-conservative shit to get to sit at the table with the crime family. What a wasted piece of shit he has turned out to be. Worthless as FAUXNOIZ.
disingenuous... is that what John Edwards is? If that's the case for John, what would you say the Republican bozos like Fred and Rudy and hey... how about Joe Lieberman... are? Other than buffoons... ?
carefulwiththatAXEeugene @ 74:
You know, I hadn't thought of it that way. Does he really think that Coulter has a point besides inflammatory rhetoric?
And I wish Edwards had pushed a little more with some questions about why MSNBC booked her at all. Coulter is clearly well outside the political mainstream - she advocates blowing up the New York Times.
By the way, does anybody remember Coulter caterwalling about the "left's doctrine of infalibilty" with unassailably sympathetic speakers (Michael J. Fox, 9/11 widows, Cindy Sheehan)? I'm guess that tomorrow some whore "news" show (O'Reilly factor anyone?) will have her on to claim that the media is treating her unfairly because Edwards has cancer.
Can we dispense with the haircut analyses? Is that really the prime criteria of presidential candidates these days?
Elizabeth Edwards = Pure-D Class
Coulter = Pure Skank
David Gregory tried and failed to make a point based on the idea that there are commenters on the left who are as bad or worse. If this is true, who did he have in mind? Why doesn't he name names?
The fact is he didn't because he can't.
There is no-one on the left who sinks to the level of Bull O?Really, Limpbag, Beck, Malkin, or Coulter, to mention just the most prominent of the rightwing hate-mongers. They're all as bad as the Repukes themselves.
Gregory: "Why shouldn't that (use Coulter's comments for fund raising) be viewed as a calculated effort...for political gain"
Gregory: "A lot of people are wondering how your health is"
Why doesn't Gregory just come out and say "all viewers should not vote for Edwards?" The guy is so biased it stinks. He can't even feel sympathy for the attacks against Edwards, since he is busy thinking that Coulter's attacks have to be spun somehow into Edwards' gain so that it can be blamed on Edwards.
Hay MSNBC, It Is Time To Question Your Conduct
The executives over at MSNBC must find their efforts concerning Ann Coulter and John & Elizabeth Edwards and honest attempt to get to the bottom of things. And, as a follow up, try to clarify that all intentions, mostly on the Edwards' behave, were admirable. After all, they use the "big boys", Chris Matthews, and now David Gregory, to work this whole affair for everything they could.
How did all this come about anyway. Oh yea, I recall Matthews used Coulter to generate ratings by having her on for a whole hour. To make sure the ratings gained a boost, Matthews went into "Hardball" mode and allowed Edwards to call in and confront Coulter on using her dead son to advance her shock nasty tactic. Matthews, who knew all along Edwards had sent out donation letters to also capitalize on Coulter's nasty insulting habit, sees a avenue to make the Edwards look like a superficial money hungry politicians, and he proceeds to do so. Now, I want you to take notice to who is driving this "car" so far: MSNBC.
Enter David Gregory, who is Mr Cream of the Crop over at MSNBC, who put his own don't mess with me logic into the the matter. Gregory, feeling like he was on a role, decides to ask Edwards if she lessen HER standards by addressing Coulter's slam on her dead child and loving husband. In affect, Gregory is asking Edwards why did you speak up for yourself. He went on to say, after the first slam did not work, underneath Mr Edwards is just another superficial politician bent on 400 dollar haircuts, while all the time pretending to help the poor.
Keep in mind, MSNBC is driving this whole episode, from start to, I hope it's over, finish. They should be suspected for smelling like the shit they disturbed, the manipulation they used to do this, and the dishonest way they went about it. We should ask the executives to changes seats with Elizabeth Edwards so we can ask them a few questions.
Joseph
Nope... that dog won't hunt.
Many years ago when I was a young Black sailor, serving in the deep south, a young white sailor spat in my face. Now what he was really getting at was that he found my dating a Native American Wave to be singularly offensive when conducted in the public view of him and his companions in the enlisted men's club. But you know what, as I wiped away the spittle and then tried to launch him into orbit that conversational point somehow got lost.
Ann Coulter isn't trying to make any salient point! She is simply playing a bad game of the "dozens", the ghetto game where you win by making the most personal and degrading insult you can think of in an insult exchange. And she can't even play, she can insult but can't take even mild criticism... for instance if someone were to say to her... honey you're so skinny if you close one eye we'd think you were a needle, so stupid that you IQ is calculated in fractions, and after spitting out all of that garbage your breath has gotta smell like a trashbin after a 2 month New York garbageman's strike... she would probably think that they were being unfair!
Russ Mason UK @ 38:
wait a fucking minute! isn't boosh's poodle from YOUR country?
let's ask the goddamn obvious question?
WHICH REPUGLICAN CANDIDATE IS NOT A RICH WHITE MAN?
sure, I get it!
Let's forgive adams apple annie for saying things that a democrat would get arrested for or at least be investigated for and would unquestionably be absolutely castigated for!
I don't know if it takes facing cancer to find it, but Edwards exhibited a grace that I haven't really seen elsewhere, it was just delightful when she responded laughing, as though to a child, after Gregory spouted his translation, she gave it just the right touch when she said "Oh, no, that's not what Coulter said at all", and truly chuckled from somewhere deep down, as though what Gregory said was the tall tale, that in fact, it was. Sometimes it pays to just be natural. I think if more of us, in and out of the media, responded to such ugly and divisive falsities, by gently, kindly, laughing at the incredible strains of logic that we hear, it would go a long way towards disarming these constructs of their force. Perhaps not exclusively, sometimes a good jab is singularly effective, but instead of engaging these phantom tales we could express a lot more often the pure bafflement most of us really feel when we hear them.
[Deleted. Off topic. Do you have anything to add to the conversation?]

RIGHT-WING TALKING POINT
"EDWARDS IS DOING THIS TO RAISE MONEY"
Nothing to see, move along sheeple.
Back to reality... I could have a beer with Edwards, if that really means anything.
Oh my God, Gregory went after Elizabeth Edwards (of all people) harder than he would have ever gone after trAnne Coulter. I am disgusted. Elizabeth held her own and answered each pathetic charge gracefully but come on! Hey Chipmunk-face! I got an idea, have Coulter on and grill her on the fact not one of her books contains a footnote reference! Or ask her why she thinks it's cute to mock the deaths of loved ones she doesn't know. But why do that when you can treat a media created monster hacktress as legitimate and debase the dying wife of a Democratic candidate?
Gregory's platform for this discussion was a defense of Anne Coulter, from tone to question to conclusion. Damn I think I hate that little neocon butt-boy media-cracker more than Matthews at this point!
WTF?
I have had some respect for Gregory in the past, but I think it's all gone now. No one should be legitimizing Coulter, least of all a supposedly serious journalist. And what about the false equivalency he forwards about "the left"? There is no analogy to Coulter on the left, none. Give it up. Umm, and if they get money because Coulter is vile, more power to them! Edwards handled herself well.
This young man emotionally confuse me with his direct talk, sometimes, and his asskissing, sometimes. That's confusining.
Can you believe that crap, calling Edwards disingenuous about poverty since he got a $400.00 haircut? If I were impoverished I would be overjoyed to be paid $400.00 for a haircut. Which barber have you heard complain about that? I call that looking out for the litttle guy.
plainbrown1 @ 95:
The best comment on the board Sir, I salute you. Coulter's only retort was some wanked-out straw man argument that E. Edwards wanted to stop her from speaking. Uh, no. She wanted her to find a different more intelligent way of speaking which obviously is waaayyy beyond Coulter's capabilities.
What's most disappointing about that interview is it points out how cynical we've become and how much more interested the media is in pursuing spin than pursuing issues.
I suppose if Edwards didn't take a stand on poverty, nobody would care about how much he spent on his haircut. In which case, the only thing you should stand up for is the rights of the wealthy.
Unfortunately, you don't hear many interviewers asking these aristocratic candidates why they only stand up for the rights of the wealthy.
Big pharma companies are dumping truckloads of cash on the lawns of the other candidates, and nobody asks why they're silent on healthcare.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Edwards makes a good point about the increasingly de-evolution of political dialogue, and the only insight we get is cynical speculation on how she's spinning attacks to get a couple bucks.
What did we learn about Edwards?
That he spends about the same as every other candidate for his haircut. Thanks, Dave. For nothing.
Dumb question, but when the fuck was it appropriate to talk about The Edwards Haircut when discussing Ann Coulter being a big-mouthed asshole? The topic was NOT a hair-do, it was the dumbing down of political discourse. And so Gregory gets into about hair? Is he 12?
This is all part of the smear campaign against the Edwards; it's the beginning. Some of it comes from Dems or Dem-friendly independents, who want Hillary in office.
It's Swift Boat all over again.
Will people fall for it?...again?
I stopped watching television-- any and all broadcast, cable, and satellite, etc.-- about four months before September 11, 2001. I just couldn't take the crap, the lies, the constant constant sell sell sell distortion distortion distortion, etc.
I check in at Crooks and Liars for a glimpse of TV reality. You all TIVO so I don't have to.
Man, am I glad I still don't watch TV. What a debased, degraded wasteland for a debased, degraded world.
Keep in mind that the huge majority of people don't think there's anything immoral or hypocritical about a rich person enjoying his/her affluence and being concerned about poverty. It's weird to see these people in the media sending their class prejudice out over the airwaves, completely clueless to the fact that their audience (us) doesn't have that same prejudice. Weird.
AConfederacyofDunces @ 1:
I love your comment! It is so on the money!.....
That is some heavy duty reporting there. Strip away all of the rhetoric. HA HA. That was awesome! Can you believe 20% of Americans operate with that twisted logic?
I applaud Mrs Edwards for her most civil confrontation with Coulter. Most of us would not be so kind to Coulter I think.
But Coulter behave as a sick animal no matter if she is a paid hack or she really believes it trash. She is in need of mental illness care/ A fact...............................
Shrub's political campaign promised to "restore honor and dignity to the White House." Thank you, Elizabeth Edwards for delivering on that promise.
Ann Coulter is just like the Mean Girls, only psycho mean. A grown woman who appears on TV in a short, tight, low-cut black cocktail dress in the morning or any other time of the day is seriously deranged. And the constant hair flipping was soooooo junior high. Any serious human being who lends credibility to this hate-filled, pathetic creature had an IQ of 75. So I guess Chris Matthews, with his brownest of noses where conservatives are concerned, has a problem. . . . . after all, wasn't it he who admired Chimpy's "package" (eeeewwwwwwww) on the carrier deck of the Abraham Lincoln? 'Nuff said.
P.S. The ever-classy, brilliant Elizabeth Edwards showed admirable restraint. Way to go, Elizabeth. Have you thought of running for office?
Oh, sorry---forget where I was blogging......was so incensed about the Chris Matthews thing yesterday, where I said some choice things, that I forgot I should be commenting on David Gregory---David, WTF?!! I can't believe I once thought you were a serious journalist--ever since you went dancin' with Karl Rove (must have been difficult with your nose so far up his butt), you have exhibited a stupidity that is breathless. How much are they paying you, Armstrong, er, David?
People, people c'mon! Does this really surprise you? Get your head outta yer @sses and turn off your damn tv's. When are you going to learn? This Gregory putz is just another media whore like Matthews and Russert. Don't let the "tough" questions fool you. He is a class 'A' kiss @ss not worthy of attention. Olbermann, Stewart, and Colbert are the only intelligent journalists on tv.
No, don't strip that away, David, don't! And please put a hat on...!
David, if you strip away some of the inflammatory rhetoric against her husband and other Democrats, you will notice that Ann Coulter has never endorsed one candidate or promoted a single policy that has out performed rather than under performed what the Democrats have presided over on the economy, homeland security, national security, strengthing our defense, preserving and defending the Constitution or making us and the world safer.
Consequently, why would anyone bother to strip away anything from the horsecrap Ann Coulter dumps on the airwaves in order to analyse what she really, really meant.
Rick--you are correct, sir. I do not have cable TV, so I only learn of these things online or on Air America...and then I am glad I don't have cable...!
Sany @ 66:
This is exactly my perspective. he never HAS been a "tough journalist" who's gone all conservative now. He has, rather, consistently gone where the "juice" is at the moment.
for the hell of it, this is the short video I made to commemorate Gregory's rappin with Rove...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmC4YVJ1Jb0
But this is the real kicker -- seeing Gregory the next morning on the Today show -- it was even more disgustting than today's performance, in my view:

[...] Jun 29th, 2007 by mvdg If I were American, my vote for first lady would definitely go to Elizabeth Edwards. [...]
Lets see its th end of the quarter books coming out, ratings are down so you you need a pick up I know you bring on a HATE MONGER,LIAR and MANIPULATOR then you twist the story so the callin person is wrong and the HATE MONGER is right.
Lets see you LIE this country into a WAR, you strip Americans of habeus corpus, you politicize the Justice Dept., you fail to be accountable to the Congress and the American people, You out a Live working CIA agaent and BETRAY you COUNTRY but a Whore RACIST self Hating BIMBO can raise cain about a $400.00 hair cut. Are these self important self graciating IDIOTS on the right all MENTALLY ILL.
Dick why are you giving Coulter a free pass? Why is that woman on talk shows at all? She markets hate in the name of the Republican party.
Oops that should have been a semi-colon not a comma....
Gregory is babbling like a drunk. Um...
ACA
...
Hillary Clinton says: "I want to take those profits."
Gregory is one of those things that casual viewers point at and giggle.
Why does anybody even take him serious?
I know they don't, they only point at him as a hood ornament on the way to a very bad crash.
David Gregory is the prototypical antichrist : a hardened liberal fully set to fire his bow at the Administration ... a veritable Jannes and Jambres.
Psalms 11:2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.
2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
So let me get this straight, if David Gregory, aka M.C. Rove's dance partner, asks a tough question of Bush or his press secretary he's doing his job? Seems to me that his "job" does not include be an apologist for a Virago that wants a presidential candidate to be assassinated by a terrorist. Gregory is just using space and pretending to be a journalist while collecting his big paycheck from the corporate media that does not want fair, balanced or even rational reportage. Gregory passed into the "hack" category a long time ago. Infrequent attempts to get some credibility back are too little and waaaay too late.
last one
Regarding the hack Gregory’s partisan bile...
Just follow the links
Such as the major league connections between him, his wife and the Clintons.
David Gregory’s wife is Beth Wilkinson, Executive vice president and the general counsel for Fannie Mae.
Which is one massive link to Jamey Gorelick – who is also a personal friend of Hillary Clinton!
You see, Gorelick used to be Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae, until she bailed as it was going under to join the main law firm representing Fannie Mae.
They would be the world's largest law firm: Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP
In fact, Gorelick and Wilkerson have a long history together that goes back to the Clinton Justice department, and the wall between the FBI and the CIA fully erected by Gorelick.
Beth Wilkerson was Gorelick's coverup queen on the Timothy McVeigh prosecution team, when she told Judge Matsch and denied on the record that the federal government had any evidence that anyone other than McVeigh had planned and carried out the worst terrorist attack on American soil.
So, she’s married to Gregory; Gee, d’ya think they share a similar political philosophy of COVERING FOR THE CLINTONS?
i hear the crow's on special
special thanks to newsbusters.org the right wing's bastard child of media matters and... well take your pick of any republican blog where they try oh so hard to make logical arguements, but unlike the little engine that could....
yes, although i suppose if he got a $400 dollar haircut he should be fired for gross negligence (in other words nice coulteresque arguement there).
yes, because i totally remeber gregory saying he agreed with coulter in that clip.
enough republican trolling for me today....
David Gregory what a total disappointment you turned out to be. you started out as a shining light, willing to take on the questions in the prez press conf and ask those questions that we all wanted asked but you and the ostracized helen were the only ones willing to do so. but when they dangled a major news anchor position or a mat lauer replacement, you folded just like the rest of them. the old adage, we all have a price. you certainly found yours quite suddenly. welcome to the bottom of the bird cage, you sellout.
so the story here isn't how the media lets a blabber mouth back on the airwaves again and again and again to spew the most hateful, vile and questionably illegal rhetoric just to sell her books? instead, that sellout gregory actually gives the coultergiest rhetoric legitimacy by restating it.
will we ever have a credible news channel that doesn't give into ratings?
Elizabeth Edwards should start an " Accuracy and Intergrity in Media/Journalism" Foundation for inner city ghetto youths and use the money to remodel the 13th Bathroom
OK, this has gone on long enough, it's time to 'let the cat out of the bag' as it were.
Some time ago, Michael Eisner, Murdoch, and Schmolo Dipstein of Cartoon Network, got drunk together at a bar mitzvah, and made a bet. Eisner bet that technology had developed to the point where pixelbytemation could create a character that was indistinguishable from a real live person. Murdoch and Schmolo though he was nuts, and the bet was on.
Thus was 'Ann Coulter' 'born'. Michael won the bet, though Murdoch was pissed that Eisner had based 'Ann's' personality on him (Murdoch). MIchael's old company (Disney) is planning a whole series using 'Ann' as the lead, if they can get rights to the 'Cruella' trademark.
So 'Ann Coulter' was a 'success'.
But no one at pixelbytemation will talk about their 'George Bush' experiment.
And if you mention 'DickHead' or 'Cheney', you'll be denied entry to pixelbytemation.
I would rather John and Elizabeth back away from entering into a "shout down" type dialogue with Ann Coulter and shift to calling her out for what she is. Ann Coulter is a used car salesman, she doesn't even believe the ridiculous rhetoric she spews. I think that much is obvious by how clownish and contrived her over the top statements are. A better approach, I feel, would be for John to say something like "I can't really say that I mind Ann Coulter since she's a character and not a real pundit. She's figured out how to fleece bigots and the uneducated with hilarious hate speech and positioning herself as their voice. She probably doesn't really believe in anything except getting paid like most actors."
I think you'd be in a whole new ball game with her, and people like her, if you did that. O'Reilly would be susceptible to the same approach.
David Gregory is right.
Coulter IS making a point, but when people who are faced with that point, they would rather avoid answering it (because they may see a kernel of truth in it). So instead they focus on the "hate speech", the "name calling", the "slander", etc etc, as if THAT is a proper rebuttle to ideas and arguments.
I for one don't agree with Coulter on many issues, but I at least want to focus on her ideas and not the rhetoric. Focusing on rhetoric and not ideas is admission of ignorance and stupidity. You want to look stupid? Go on national television or the blogs and print in huge letters "SCANDAL! Coulter calls Edwards a faggot!!" To me this SCREAMS of idiocy. It is like saying "Look Ma, I can fight with the big boys and girls!", yet your fight consists of standing on the sidelines behind your mother's skirt and yelling profanities at those who are yelling profanities.
I say good job Gregory.
Russ Mason UK @ 38:Hello Russ Mason UK @ 30: I had the pleasure of living in the UK for a
few years. Nice people and a much better government than the USA.
Imagine Bush confronting face to face a debate in Parliament? Our health
care is a joke compared to the UK's but we are arrogant Merkins who shout
#1 when in fact we are a big zero. I'm to old & sick to move but I missed my
chance in those wonderful days in the UK. Consider yourself lucky.
what a twerp.
Ann Coulter only has invectives to offer about everyone she hates. There are no valid criticisms that I can find. Her whole raison d"etre is to rain hate speech down and hope something sticks. It's duly noted that the "woman" can't take an iota of push-back. Mrs. Edwards cleaned her clock.
shantiquax @ 12:
The President's job is to be relevant as a role model to blown up dead body parts? You're smoking crack. Getting a haircut that costs the same amount as any haircut of any presidential candidate while running an expensive high stakes campaign race is relevant to poverty? You're REALLY smoking crack. By your ridiculous logic, no presidential candidate who gets more than 20 bucks in campaign contributions has the right to run on an anti-poverty stance - we all have to ignore that it exists and worry about the problems of rich people like Bush does. Only Republicans are allowed to get $400 haircuts - their platform is based on the needs of the top 1/2 % of the richest top 10% of Americans - and in this world, it's a haircut that makes you a hypocrite - not the lies that you spew and the smears that you make to get elected.
Gregory is like Broder. Access over accuracy. Dave's just lookin' out for Dave.
LOL! "If you strip away the inflammatory rhetoric ..."
...you have a B-list hack with an eating disorder.
If you strip away the inflammatory rhetoric ...you end up with nothing.
I'm reminded of one of Dan O'Neill's "Odd Bodkins" strips where a turtle outside of its shell is described as "a lumpy, ugly, naked lizard."
(Why are apostrophes and quote marks getting backslashes attached to them in preview? Please don't let them be there when I submit this.)
"he’s disingenuous, especially on the signature issue of poverty, whether it’s a $400 haircut or taking big money to speak in front of a poverty group"
Now, this isn't me asking, it's Ann Coulter's question . . . Greg, you should know that this interpreted question is nothing more than an ad hominim attack. What you're saying is that if someone is a wealthy and disdains the poor, and does nothing for the poor, they're honest; someone who is wealthy and cares about the poor, and supports causes for the poor, he's disingenuous. A politician who doesn't support causes for the poor and charges no money to not speak to a poverty group, but only charges big money to speak to wealthy corporate groups (a natural constituency), is honest (a coda to this would be that the same politician who charges big money to speak to a poverty group, even though he doesn't support the group, is also honest). A politician who supports causes for the poor and charges big money to speak to a poverty group (his consituency), is disingenuous. Keep in mind as well that the Supreme Court feels that money is speech and therefore giving money to candidates is the only way to have a voice in politics. Greg, what the fuck are you thinking?
On Tradesports, John Edwards' chances of winning the Democrat Presidential nomination are trading at 5. If my math is correct that's 20-1 odds. If you are so inspired by Edwards' newest ploy to drum up cash, and you think he still has a chance of getting the nomination, the better strategy for you is to put your donation money on one of those contracts instead of directly to the Edwards campaign. Get 20 times your money, then use your winnings to donate to his Presidential bid.
Win-win.
