This is a great line from the article.
"As a class, they honor politeness over honesty and believe that being "balanced" means giving the same weight to a lie as you give to the truth."
Glenn Greenwald's point is well taken. Most U.S. journalists are very hesitant in digging deep to verify the veracity of the claims made by the U.S. military concerning Iraqi deaths. There needs to be more journalists like Nir Rosen, Dahr Jamail, Robert Fisk, Patrick Cockburn, et al, who are willing to do what journalist are supposed to do and that is to seek and print the truth.
Bdrube raised the issue of July Fourth, which the government and the media are always willing to flog in order to ratchet up and focus upon the specter of nationalism and superpatriotism, which the citizens of this country always seem willing to accept without too much hesitation on their part.
American soldiers rolled into Baghdad's Shiite Sadr City slum today in search of Iranian-linked militants and as many as 26 Iraqis were killed in what a U.S. officer described as "an intense firefight."
But residents, police and hospital officials said eight civilians were killed in their homes and angrily accused U.S. forces of firing blindly on the innocent. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki condemned the raids and demanded an explanation for the assault into a district where he has barred U.S. operations in the past.
...
Witnesses said U.S. forces rolled into their neighborhood before dawn and opened fire without warning.
"At about 4 a.m., a big American convoy with tanks came and began to open fire on houses — bombing them," said Basheer Ahmed, who lives in Sadr City's Habibiya district. "What did we do? We didn't even retaliate — there was no resistance."
According to Iraqi officials, the dead included three members of one family — a father, mother and son. Several women and children, along with two policemen, were among the wounded, they said.
The assault brought quick criticism from al-Maliki. "The Iraqi government totally rejects U.S. military operations ... conducted without a pre-approval from the Iraqi military command," al-Maliki said in a statement released by his office. "Anyone who breaches the military command orders will face investigation."
One way not to win hearts and minds is to simply write and print whatever the US Military or Pentagon gives as the "facts" with no subsequent investigation. Embedded soon went to in bed with the propaganda matrix.
From day one of the run up to war with Iraq,I said in all the protest groups around here that we have to protest the News/papers/tv stations.People acted like I was a leper. We even went out to Rob Portman`s(Oh-dist.# 2) on Feb.,18th 2003;and he lied his ass off.At the next Sun. meeting I told everyone that he was lying and that we had to protest the MSM and be prepared to be arrested because what we were doing was really nothing.People were insulted,I was ostracized.,I never went to another meeting.I became so depressed that when I went to Maui, and Kauai for two weeks on March 17.I returned without a suntan.
Whenever I read about the msm-they should forever be referred to in small letters due to their diminutive importance-I am reminded of how depressed I was and that depression is anger turned inwards. So I just want these assholes to know:I`m angry as hell at you guys, the msm,and your reporting has caused you to have blood on your hands. For that you suck.Peace and love to you,and may God bless you as only when you deserve it.Seems like He hasn`t blessed you guys for six years. It behooves you folks to start doing better about telling because if you do not, you could end up where W., and Cheney, and the rest of the neocons and their ilk are going.I hear it hot, very, very hot.Not Yuma,Not Death Valley, not even Phoenix.
My new organization Keep On Truckin`For Peaceis a newly started slowly moving group of people who are focused on peace, and on exposing pathology of those who cannot accept peace.I an the current leader as I am the only member.A couple of guys are still deciding.Anyway,we`ll be ready by the Sept. Peace marches in Washington. In the mean time, keep on truckin`for peace.
Some media outlets are in the rather dishonest habit of referring to any Iraqi casualties as being 'Al Qaeda', even though this latter group are merely one of several opposed to the ongoing occupation.
The 'forgotten war' isn't exactly winning hearts and minds either...
A bipartisan congressional group has released a report on the capability of the Iraqi forces, which the United States alleged to have spend $19 billion on recruiting, training and equipping, The Washington Post reported.
The report found that the Pentagon "cannot report in detail how many of the 346,500 Iraqi military and police personnel that the coalition trained are operational today.”
And who got the money? American contractors, right? [in Iraqi we say Hasna Jabata… Hasna Akhthata, roughly translated: Hasna brought it and Hasna took it back.]
We have no idea what our $19 billion has gotten us," Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Mass.), chairman of the Armed Services subcommittee on oversight and investigations, told the Post.
Well, neither do Iraqis Meehan.
He said that the States spent $55,000 on each of the 350,000 Iraqi soldiers!
How can we ask the “Iraqi army” to fight insurgents and take responsibility if they are not equipped well enough?
Propoganda, propoganda....When "our" U.S. Military/Pentagon is in
charge of what is and is not reported, what else can we expect but
more lies and distortion of the facts..
It is rewarding to know you have gotten something right. On Saturday May 12, 2007,I blogged the following:
"False Comparisons Make Way For Killing Field"
"There has been a up tic in claims Al Qaeda is behind much of the killing in Iraq. In most news coming out of Iraq about attacks on Americans and civilians, there has be an overuse of the word "suspected to be" and "sources say" Al Qaeda is behind the attacks on American solders. Because we have not gone after the people who brought down the two towers, Bush has taken a lot of heat. This heat has brought about attempts to make the case Al Qaeda is taking over or is behind all and every attack in Iraq.
There are two important facts about this current attempt to strengthen the claim Al Qaeda is firmly embedded in Iraq:
1. The first is now the war in Iraq is now connected to 911. Yes, they are trying to make the case we cannot leave Iraq because Al Qaeda is there. How is that for making it so? If you cannot find Al Qaeda, bring Al Qaeda to Iraq.
2. The other reason is the only way they can really do something about the violence in Iraq is to address the direct true elements causing the war. Since the Bush administrations say there is no civil war, they have got to find a way to eliminate one side of the civil war. Thus, any over kill can be assumed to be Al Qaeda's demise. This amounts to creating a killing field.
The Bush administration cannot do this alone. They need someone to disburse this lie Al Qaeda is behind all the killing in Iraq. Enter the media: Fox news and the Fox wantabees. Look for a lot of "framing the issue" kind of news. CSPAN's Washington Journal will do it with a question: Should we leave Iraq if Al Qaeda is so entrenched in the Iraq?
The lies and misdirection concerning this war never seem to stop. Before believing anything coming out Iraq, it is almost a must to second guess its content.

Although my writing skills are not as polished as Glenn Greenwalds, I came very close to seeing the very same dynamic Greenwald writes about. I recall writing one post, a few days after this one, in all capital letters because I thought the "Al Qaeda in Iraq" claim was being overused my the media and the military, overlooked by the by the congress and senate, and not important enough to the American people.
I have no clout but maybe someone important in the congress will not look into what I know is wrong and misleading.
I read an article about children being molested and no help for authorities and then I realized it wasn't Iraq it was Texas. Talk about winning the hearts and minds. The article stated Woman--Son-Forced-to-Do-
Sexual-Favors-for-Prison-Guard ,
Yes the Attorney General was told by the parents of these kids some as young as 10 years old. Gonzales said he didn't see a problem and wouldn't charge the Texas Guards.
Looks like the Christian Right is the way the Americans want to follow. Finger Foley can continue to molest kids and he has the full support of the American people and the White House. So much for all that talk about overseas child sex rings the headquarters is in the White House.

Another reason my wife and I will spending July 4th in Canada AGAIN, as we have every year since the Iraq War Crime began.
Maybe someday we'll wise up and stay there.
What a pathetic disgrace.

You know, it's these one bombings a day that make our successes in Iraq look bad.

Doesn't anyone have *any* sense around here?! Everyone in the middle east or whatever is in Al Qaeda.
