Al Franken is scoring big in the fundraising game
Al Franken is tearing it up:
Still, money is money. And, when you compare Franken's current financial standing to the seven Democratic candidates who ran and won Senate seats in 2006 you see he is FAR ahead of their pace.

I want to see the moment O'Reilly's head explodes from hearing this news.
Rush is having an aneurysm.
Good, I like Franken. Though he was an idiot about the Iraq war and supported it at first. Then again, so did most americans.
Will O'Reilly refer to him as Senator Smalley?
"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggone it, people vote for me."
As with Cindy Sheehand, Al is farting in the wind as to political ambitions.
Stick to slaming those idiotic far right-wing conservatives, since he does
an excellent job at that.
Darn it, people must like him...
Doggiebobo @ 5:
I disagree. If the repugs can keep sending in B-grade actors, then a comedian should be an over-achiever in DC.
The Al Franken Decade has just begun!
GO..AL!
go franken!
(i do agree with bubba #3, though)
and check out this article about norm coleman:
"A letter to GOP Sen. Norm Coleman from a former college friend asking why he supports brutal drug laws when he was an avid pot smoker as a young man."
http://www.alternet.org/story/55830
and, for the record, i am 100% for the legalization: it would solve many a'problem. hypocrites is what i have a problem with--i'm looking at you norman coleman.
I'm one of his donors, $5/month and various $20 here and there. Al is a very smart guy, loves the troops, cares about 'the least among us' and will continue the momentum of the NEW Senators changing the tone of politics in Washington. Putting the 'working folks' ahead of billionaires is evident in the donors he is attracting. His democratic rival is really 'more of the same' and we don't want that in Minnesota. Even though Al is Jewish, he 'lives' the teachings of Jesus Christ, much more so than the so-called 'vote values' Christians. He referrred to those folks as worshipping "supply side Jesus". He is proving that if WE THE PEOPLE join together we CAN have a hopeful future. We need many more like him!
Senator Franken...has a nice ring to it.
May people vote on the issues, not the wealth or popularity of the candidate.
It seems to be, more and more, about money........and less and less about ideas.
In many cases it is the candidate with the least money that is the most worthy of "winning." It is no wonder that we live in a not-so-democratic society that is primarily ruled by the "rich."
Peace!
PNAAC Minister @ 7:
Let' see, Arnie Swartzaggler for Governor of Calif, Ronnie Ragun as Governor of Calif.
and as President, and now Freddie T. as possible candidate for Prez...Agreed ALL are
grade B actors; but (tho there are many, many clowns in the U.S. Senate), I don't
think that a comedian will fit the mold for that office. I may be wrong, and if so, then
I think that Bill Mahar should consider tossing his hat into the ring also.
I believe Al supported the Afgan war but not the Iraq debacle.
Al's BFF had something to say last night.
O'Reilly admits error on "roving gangs of lesbians" statement on video.
I was in Baghdad during Christmas of 2003. While there, I met Al Franken at a USO show at the Baghdad Airport. Not only was he kind, funny, and respectful, you could tell it meant a whole lot to him to be with American soldiers during their holiday away from home. And unlike our President--who had visited during Thanksgiving a month before--Al's visit was unscripted, unhurried, and genuine.
Minnesota would be fortunate to have him as a senator, and I hope voters there give him a chance.
I'm sure most of his donations came from outside of MN since he's connected to the entertainment industry. Being from MN, my guess is he won't get out of the primary. We were burned with Jesse "the body" as Guv and most people won't vote for a "personality" here again for a while.
Too bad, he'd probably make a decent enough Senator but it's just not going to happen.
It is my belief that Al is smarter than pretty much everyone in Congress today. He absolutely dominated his two congressional opponents a few years back on "Jeopardy! Political Power Players Week" (he blew the game in final jeopardy though). Before this, I never realized how sharp the guy is when it comes to history, politics and government.
Regardless of the election outcome, I can't wait to see him debate with Coleman.
Dr. Matt @ 1:
I'd pay real money to see that.
Naturally, the MSM writer has to take a subtle cheap shot, saying Franken's not running as a lark, but suggesting that Franken's IS running as a lark "as so many other entertainers do." Really? You mean Reagan? Murphy? Thompson? Schwarzenegger? Which one ran on a lark? Bono? Grandy? Eastwood?
A pattern emerges. A Republican actor runs for office, he's serious about politics. A Democrat runs and it's a "lark," or it's a surprise that he's "serious."
lynn @ 14:
i really, really like Al, and i hate even refuting this... but, unfortunately, he did support the initial invasion. i believe he even spoke at a clear channel pro-war rally well before the invasion. he has admitted as much and apologized.
Whatever...
I lost all respect for him when he gave his unquestioning support for Israel during their heavy handed bombardment of Lebanon last summer.
Sweet. I am betting its a lock, hell they voted in Ventura, Franken actually has some political credentials.
Of course Franken is winning.
Who would give money to that Pothead Norm Coleman?
He'd just spend it on drugs.
ert @ 24:
We haven't gotten to the Reps vs. Dems portion of the program yet. Right now it's still Dems vs. Dems so this is a ridiculous comparison. Other than the fact that the Reps would give money to Norm...
lynn @ 14:
No, Franken was a card carrying pro-iraq war asskicker when it started. I read the book where he admits it was a mistake. He says that he was still under the 9/11 spell iirc. Anyway, I still like him. Everyone makes mistakes.
"""""""However, Franken’s bigger problem is where he stands on the War in Iraq. He supported the invasion in 2002, and even attended a pro-war rally by Clear Channel (although he admits in one of his books that it was a mistake.) As recently as June 2006, he said that he “agreed with Bush” on the issue of withdrawal – long after Congressman Jack Murtha had come out in favor of leaving Iraq. Franken attacks Bush for lying about the War, but as far as I can tell, his position on Iraq is not that different from Hillary Clinton.
"""""""""

I would caution people not to be taken in by Al Franken. Linda at #10 believes Franken loves the troops". If Franken actually loves the troops then he would calling for the immediate withdrawal of those troops from that abattoir in Iraq. He would be calling for the defunding of the occupation in Iraq. He would be demanding that the Democrats impeach Bush and Cheney. I have not heard Franken, this alleged lion of the left, call for any of these things to be done. If he is not making these demands [and I do not believe that he has] then the people of Minnesota should think about voting for the Green Party in Minnesota.
Al Franken in the senate and Bill Maher for president. Now we are getting somewhere. These two are both a lot smarter then what we have there now. Bar none. And comparing to Bush, how about 100 times. See what all of that coke did to your head George. Not many brain cells left. If it wasn't for his family he would be living under an underpass.
He is such a lock for the Senate. Wellstone would be proud. Wellstone would lament the millions that are needed to get into the Senate, of course, but Wellsone would be very proud of Al.
Franken does respect the troops. He's probably gone over there more than anyone. I dont see any of the right-wing celebrities knocking down doors to make repeat performances over there.
when i think of bor's head exploding i write another check to al's campaign. fun!
The Senate is going to get even funnier. We already have Hanna Barbera's "Droopy" as the Majority Leader....
Although Franken's done a lot of USO shows unlike reichwing talking-heads, I'm not sure I wan't him going into government. Franken holding in the jokes will result in as bad an explosion as Bill O'Really when a liberal guest not only contradicts him but makes sense.
Franken would make a good seanator, certainly much better than Norm Coleman.
Doh! "senator"...
Good job Al. Wish we had you in Nebraska.
Senator Franken
Lord how that will stick in Fox's throat.
Anyone who has read his books knows that Franken is smart as hell and will not be run over by Republican blowhards. He will win any debate he gets into... mostly because he's armed with the truth.
Al, get in there and stir the shit storm.
Arrow @ 22:
What is it about a country (Israel) who has ILLEGALY OCCUPIED an entire people and culture FOR 40 +++ years, broken every rule in the book of International Law/Human Rights AT LEAST TWICE and that selectively ruins the careers of US Congressmen that dont follow their lead - that makes Americans think they are good friends or good for America???
Al Franken really supported Israel (Terrorist State) in the massacre of Lebanon??? Did you know Bill Maher is also a Zionist creep at heart? (hard to believe that I agree with most of what he says... -- scary stuff I tell ya....)
If Al wins, we need a senator Stein! Just think of all the wonderful Franken-Stein bills that could be introduced nyuk-nyuk-nyuk
blahsay @ 40:
howzabout this for your frankenstein dreams:
"Al Franken won Ben Stein’s money — and high-dollar contributions from scads of other celebrities in his bid for Minnesota’s Democratic Senate nomination, according to Federal Election Commission reports," Nicole Duran reports for Roll Call....
Batocchio @ 34:
Would he sound like Sean Connery?
I'm a little disappointed that Franken is running for the Senate. I always thought that he was half of my fantasy presidential candidate team. Franken vs. O'Reilly. throw in Kinky as an independent and it sure would be fun. It's not likely that any of them would be good presidents but the campaign would be a gas.
Die job
Franken wipes the floor up with the likes of Faux Noise Fattity and O'Lielly and all the Rethug losers.
Say goodbye to Norm Coleman...
Yay Al!
how about President Al Frankin...senator is just the very first step :O
where can i send a cheque? and if laughter is the best medicine, al franken might just bring us universal health care.
a californian for franken!
Al's going to make an excellent senator. Here's somebody who knows how to use a bully pulpit.
Al's cool. He's smart, witty, and well informed. And when he's wrong, as in Iraq, he admits it. I miss his show, but did send him a couple of checks. I think he beats Coleman with his badly capped teeth.
Al. He's good enough, he's smart enough, and doggone it, people like him.
Not only that, he's the only talk show host to ever use Grateful Dead cuts for almost every segment.
I can't wait to hear him say "I, me, Senator Al Franken"!
Its a sad commentary that money trumps policy, why people like Kucinich will never win and Democrats on this website will always suffice for the "winnable" candidate. Who cares how much money his campaign has? Oh yea, the media that will get it does.
I just donated $10 to Al, that's the price of one movie at the theater, I think everyone can spare that at least once, if not monthly.
Bilge O'Reilly did mention Frankin (Stuart Smalley as he calls him) last night on the Fudge Factor. He dismissed his run for office as a joke and said that Coleman is far ahead of him in the polls. I'm not from Minnesota, is this true, or is O'Lielly blowing it out his butt once again.
Matt @ 54:
I don't like that either , Matt - but as Part of The Reality Based Commiunity , you gotta hang with the reality that money is necessary to even think about running for office these days in Craperica.
