Michael Moore VS Wolf Blitzer - Round II
By Logan Murphy Monday Jul 09, 2007 5:45pm
John posted part one of Michael Moore's interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer yesterday and there has been a lot of buzz around both the interview and Dr. Sanjay Gupta's "reality check" which aired just before the interview, setting Moore off. CNN aired the second half of the interview today. While the second half of the interview was a bit more subdued, Moore was still passionate in making his points. Blitzer throws out some criticisms and Moore slaps them all down, even claiming that an Iranian news agency is reporting that Moore is going to be traveling to Iran to show his new film. Of course, Moore laughs it off and asks if Fox News was really behind that story. At the end of the interview Moore thanks Wolfie for telling him he liked the movie during the break.

The YouTube is a little slow, but it works. Sorry...The servers are down...
Don't forget... Moore is taking Gupta on on Larry King tonight.
Moore was great with Blitzer yesterday. You could tell he was really pissed, but he remained articulate. It would never happen but I'd love to see Moore allowed two minutes to interview Bush. That would be awesome, and long overdue.
Del Capslock @ 3:
No way would such an interview be allowed...having an intelligent individual who is articulant
(being MM of course) ask questions of an idiot who can handle only pop-up books..and
they must also have pictures.
This needs to happen a lot more (or a lot Moore!!)
That was great at the end when Moore thanked Wolf for telling him he really liked Mike's film when they were on break.
i like how they linked moore and hillary...did you see it? this equals this!! now which one was worse for the linkage? lol!!!
Off topic, but Michael Scare-e-Noff of Homeland Security is now starting
another rumor of a "possible" terriorist attack here in U.S. sometime, maybe,
this Summer. That S.O.B. is again, at instruction of bush I'm sure, beginning
to use "fear/scare" tactics, so expect the color coded alert system to be
raised in near future.
Tell Gupta, that when we get our Socialized healthcare system, he will have to decide if he wants to be a Doctor or a Journalist. Oh yeah, and he will be getting a substantial redution in Doctor pay.
Gupta the paid tool. Let's see if both he and bullShitzer apologize....anyone believe that they will?...anyone.......no one?...
Michael Moore for President!
hanshiro @ 10:
Gupta has attended the "bush-league" school of never having made an error or mistake,
so the likelihood of an apology is about as likely to happen as bush telling the truth.
A little OT but why do we have Santorum and now Chertoff publicly stating that they have a "gut" feeling, not based on any intelligence, that our country will be attacked by the terrorists big time in the coming months?
Why is the director using his gut as the filter for threats to our national security? Is this how far we've come with improving our intelligence?
Our country is run by gutless guts.
Wolf Blitzer's hit piece against Michael Moore was screwed up by incompetent, money grubbing, Dr.Gupta. (Just kepping them Honest).
Less Whore...more Moore.
Kurt @ 13:
Same intelligence/gut feelings that Rove,Cheney, bush had as to Iraq having WMD.
Scare-ne-nuff is of the same mold and like the entire bush team, is a deplorable
example of a human being.
I'm glad Moore calmed down. When he stays on-topic, he's excellent.
Don't worry, I'll throw softball questions at Gupta all night for ya Wolf. It'll be taped so we can edit anything that might damage the Company. Also, tell Wolf's Israeli handlers not to worry, I've got it under control.
Wolf is simply a horrible interviewer. He talks slowly, he wastes time going "uh...umm.." when he should be allowing the interviewee to speak. He's awful.
You have to give CNN some credit for putting it up there. It’s too bad that they were shamed into doing it. Let’s see if things get better at CNN.
bullShitzer begins his framing with Cuba and illegal travel (booga, booga) and then IRAN????? (BOOGA BOOGA!!)
PLEASE!
Is this 'guilt' and accusation by association by the Pharma-paid mainstream Media bootlicks or what?
No wonder the telecoms want to stem or access to real information by sinking Net Neutrality...
Bison Says: That was great at the end when Moore thanked Wolf for telling him he really liked Mike’s film when they were on break.
Hilarious! bullShitzer didn't expect that, I'll bet, and since he agreed to unedited broadcast, his muted agreement said it all..
Ozymandias @ 19:
Agreed...he is at his best when covering "Shock and Awe" and does not have to
talk to anyone...so my suggestion to CNN is: Send Wolfie to Baghad and let him
stay there for at least 30 or more days covering the "successful" Surge underway.
I was struck by the stark contrast between Blitzer and Moore's method of questioning. Moore strikes directly at the issue and isn't afraid to confront falsehoods with facts. Blitzer questions almost meekly, trying not to offend and backing away from confrontation. It's obviously the problem with journalistic media today, they lack spines. The only ones who seem to have them are blowhards like O'Reilly and the other Fox News sycophants.
I also like the way Moore replied on his website with researched facts. News organizations should incorporate this more thoroughly in their interviews, especially fact checking statements made by politicians, pundits, etc. on subjects which they are not authorities. It would be great and perhaps, dare I say, actual journalism.
Does anyone have links to these "gut feelings" about the U.S. getting attacked soon?
It's amazing how if you just scratch at the veneer of CNN and the other supposed non-partisan news outlets, the underlying right-wing bias is so apparent. They are all working for the destruction of this nation (some more than others) for their thirty pieces of silver. Amazing how many Americans will sell out their own country for a paycheck. I guess it's like what is said about how no single snowflake thinks it is the cause of the avalanche; they all pretend like it's someone else doing the really bad things, that their little evil isn't doing any real harm.
Your only hope is revolution.
hadenuf @ 24:
Burp
Sooo.... I thought when Beard Blitzer brought up taking the 911 rescuers to Cuba he was going to ask "So how are they doing now?" But noooo. He doesn't ask about their welfare but if they'd get in trouble with bush.
I thought these Republican assholes in thne Bush Administration claimed they could protect us from attacks? And we are hearing that the chief "protecter" says we will be attacked. That's not "protecting" anything.
hadenuf @ 24:
More like in about 17-18 months, but yes...yes I do.
I would not be surprised if this administration went after the 9/11 first responders
that went to Cuba for health care also.
CNN STILL NEEDS TO APPOLIGIZE FOR LIEING ABOUT MOORE'S FARANHEIT 9/11!!
AS WELL AS
SICKO
funkyfresh @ 28:
I felt that since Moore responded that he went to Cuba as journalist that he would have told Wolf, that he could go there to if he became a journalist.
http://myfightfordemocracy.blogspot.com/2007/07/new-declaration-of-indep...
Screw Gupta. I've had it with his "blame the patient" attitude anyway. He needs to be fired.
How interesting.
It looked like Blitzer just folded like a cheap suit. In this segment, gone were all the phony-baloney questions and it seemed like in Part II, Blitzer was trying to act like he'd been concerned about this issue all along.
Imagine what it must have been like to be Blitzer - after saying he'd covered the Clinton health care debate in 1993, and casting back and coming up empty when trying to think about stories about the vast lake of human misery Michael Moore just tipped his toe into.
Let's hope he felt a tinge of shame that CNN clearly hadn't captured the anger and despair in the country over this issue. (And their oldster demos are sure as hell going to notice.)
My guess is that Blitzer might have guessed that his audience was going to be able to tell who was on their side - telling them the truth and bringing issues to the fore - and it wasn't Blitzer. Hence Blitzer's scurrying over to Michael Moore's side.
Moore could have bit a teensy more gracious but did soften his tone just a bit when he realized that he'd beaten back the attack dog.
hadenuf @ 24:
If you are serious, go to Yahoo News and the second news article
is entitled "Officials Worry about Summer Attack"...
Doggiebobo @ 8:
Ah, yes. Chertoff has an "intuitive sense" that Al Quaeda will attack this summer. It begins.
As regards the Blitzer interview; I'm happy to see that Blitzer gave Moore time to speak, and I thought it was interesting that Moore said, "And thanks for telling me backstage that you liked the movie". That's right, Moore, call these cowards out and let them face their corporate sponsors, lol.
Also happy to see that Sanjay Gupta retracted his "mistake" about how much Cuba spends on health care and agreed to meet with Moore on Larry King Live tonight. I'm betting that he caught so much flack for his lame "reality check" that he has some serious back-stepping to do in order to retrieve whatever credibility he has left.
Pretty impressive... Michael got much, much more out of his "I'm not gonna take it" moment yesterday than I expected.
Could it be that Michael's in their face tirade woke one of the sleeping giants? One can only hope...
Write CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC tell them what you think... what you want (& while you're at it... tell FOX to piss off.)
funkyfresh @ 28:
Yeah, I wanna see the Bush (Mis)Administration try to prosecute some 9/11 rescue workers for seeking treatment in another country. After commuting scooter Libby's sentence, that should send Chimpy's approval ratings right down to single digits overnight.
Michael Moore is my hero.
Loved Moore's comments about FDR defeating the Nazis & Mussolini in less time than it's taken the Great Idiot to take a stretch of road in Iraq!
What is Blitzer's preoccupation with Rudy G? Disgusting. Yes, Guliani has a different idea about health care, he wants to perpetuate the failed system we have right now.
So if Wolfie was the WH correspondent that covered Hil, what is he doing being a shill for the neoCons on CNN?
Kurt @ 13:
When they start this stuff, I find it rather scary. They have to do something to herd Americans into the Bush Dictatorship, maybe that's the plan? Better refugee North.
kaT @ 41:
KaT, I thought Moore's comment about FDR was a brilliant way to put Bush's War in perspective. If that didn't drive home, clearly, what a total failure Bush's invasion of Iraq has been, nothing will.
Dr. M. Dunbar @ 34:
Oh, and during the interview (here, anyway) a public service clip was run in which patients were encouraged to "get more involved in their heath care." There was a little musical vignette of a doctor saying to a patient, "We're not magicians, we can't read your mind" as a way to encourage the patient to ask questions. Another was one in which a patient was lying back on an operating table, surrounded by various medical machines, and the nurses were singing, "What are these procedures, what are these machines?" (Or something like that.) The whole thing was all about how the entire medical establishment is here to serve you, but -damn ye!-you're all too dumb to use this expertise and goodwill intelligently. This ran DURING THE INTERVIEW. And Bush is out there today, telling us that our health care failings are all our fault. It's always interesting to watch these talking points as they arise isn't it? As if we don't all see it by now.
A good friend of mine was born in Eastern Europe and grew up under soviet communism.
We were drinking over the weekend and I mentioned to him that "pretty soon" all of our rights would be gone.
He laughed his amiably derisive, deep laugh and said with a big smile, "Hah, they are gone ALREADY...HA HA."
I knew it already, but I have a hard time saying it.
You know guys it doesn't matter what you bunch of nerds talk about. Why? Because nothing is going to change on my watch (inanae snigger inserted here) I have terrifired the people so much that they will do whatever I tell them too. Let Libby out, what yer going to do about it lefties? That's right nothing, and why? Because in truth this isn't a democracy, that's why. I own you tree hugging bitches, and you know it.
So I am going to continue my war, continue supporting the private medical companies, and support the wonderful Republican health system based on profit, not care.
And what will you do? Nothing! Maybe rally behind Michael Moore becuase he is the only American with guts, the rest of you hide in his shadows, letting him take the fall for your lack of action. Come on, grow a set, make this a democracy again. I dare you, get off your lazy arse and make a difference, if not. Then just shut up, and do exaclty what I command.
Just like you and CNN and have done for the last 6-years.
kaT @ 42:
What appalls me is how much credibility the MSM gives to these idiots' "gut feelings". Hey, I have a gut feeling twice a week that I'm going to hit the lottery, but of course, I never do. Gut feelings are not a substitute for substantive intelligence. "Gut feelings" don't amount to shit; why no one in the media points this out is a complete mystery to me.
I wish Michael Moore has his own talk show either a TV or radio. That will be great. Much better than we're hearing now on either the right or the left. You're speaking the truth and from your heart. We need this in this country.
One more thing.
Dr. Gupta. Even I know enough to see that he couldn't diagnose a cold.
He is simply a figure head, a chance to legitimise medicine on CNN. Have you ever watched that idiot on Sundays? What a waste of airtime.
BillO did his Yacking Points on Moore and will have Cuvuto on so he can have the money guy bash him how this is horrible for America
Bonkers @ 30:
Just in time to stop the elections. Yup.
I think CNN should replace boring Anderson Blooper with Michael Moore.....or somebody.
good job Michael and I have to give it up for Wolfe (or whoever green lighted giving Michael Moore an open mic AND a follow up) that surprised me, I hope this is the new face of CNN, I suggest everyone e-mail CNN's comments and tell them you want to see more of that, show our numbers that this is what should be concidered news, not always in that style but always looking for the answers that matter the the public. it's a pretty big wish, but I have to believe we can make it better.
Here's to hope!
the fact that Mike Moore cant have his own show is the demonstration of corporatism power over the media.
paranoia @ 54:
or after his experience with TV Nation he just gave up on the corporate outlet and stuck to what he does best and can do with the most freedom. but what do I know, I'm just guessing.
Michael Moore and the good doctor coming up on Larry King tonight. I suspect that they may end up agreeing more than they will disagree but we shall see.
Many thanks to Michael Moore, for today he is America's greatest citizen. He is doing more for all of us than anyone in the government, or anyone in private industry. He is giving us the opening to create a universal health care system. Notice how everyone says they want universal health care? only about 15% don't, you tell me what all the polls average out.
it is not a accident that this is enough for each state to make it an amendment to the constitution and require instantaneous implementation because it is enough of a majority to make congress, the supreme court and the executive branch powerless to interfere with. The people have the right to implement anything they can vote on with a super majority.
In Oregon, we will act to begin this as an initiative. Please, do this in your state, because when the elected officials realize 85% of their constituents demand this, they will have no choice but to listen to us. We can vote this in and make it a requirement that they demand by sending it to congress with the other states.
The KEY WORD HERE IS, WE, the People, can force these scumbags we elect to do what we want without their having a thing to say about it except as a citizen with one vote.
Universal health care is now. I will pay the tax. I pay thousands a month now for coverage for my dependents. And I have a folder that is 3 inches thick that has the loopholes. NO coverage, only loopholes.
end the insurance companies dominance in our lives. They are vampires that we need to collectively drive stakes through their black, atrophied and diseased hearts.
54, 55, Ted Turner ended honest news when he sold CNN to Time/Life, Time Warner, whatever they are. He really sold out humanity by selling it and not making it a mandatory that the Fairness doctrine would always apply to what was shown. That alone might have allowed CNN to have stayed the most trusted name in news. Instead of a bad joke even for infotainment.
Who is going to step in and do what Ted could have done?
Truth to power! He is a unappreciated talent. If the wolf man had been respectful from the out set ( part one ) Mr. Moore would of reciprocated. And people wonder why Moore gets pissed off. Thanks again C&L.....
to his credit, wolfie let moore answer and blow away the critics
John Amato @ 1:
that's pretty sly! you did not even say 'first'. :)
Sanjay Gupta does not care about sick people.
*cut to stunned speechless Larry King
Sanjay got owned tonight. And Larry King is part of the problems. Glad that Michael Moore appeared today.
Al Gore should have been president for the last 7 years.
LOL! How priceless was Moore's comment on Iran. "I don't think anyone's going to fall for it anymore, are they?" "I don't think so"
Genius!
larry kings all set hes got his depends on and as useual the old farts planted a load in his shorts
oldtree @ # 57
RE" " loopholes and no coverage'
Insurance companies are in the business of making money and there is nothing wrong with that, but they will go to "court"( please note the quotation marks) to defend their position as they are subject to innumerable claims that are phony. I have been on both sides of the fence with insurance companies on business related claims. In some situations , when they are defending you they are the best of friends but when you have a claim against them , they are the anti Chist.
Bush 43 does not seem to understand this. OK a friend of the Bush family is making multiple millions of dollars in the health care business , but that's just an anomaly.
At a different level .If you have house insurance or medical insurance make sure you totally understand what you are buying ( this is virtualy impossible) , In America ,the problem it is not just the uninsured, but the people that buy insurance from low life insurance companies. These charecters will think of every way to reimburse you with the smalest amount of money or they walk at the drop of the hat.
Bush 43 does not get this.
Bush 43 does not understnd this either,
I was actually fairly impressed with Wolf for letting Moore speak.
Now, I'm sure the wingers were throwing shit at the TV and wondering why Wolfie didn't go after Moore, more than he did.
But how can you go after truth? If Wolf had asked him a searing question, moore would have had no problem answering. No spin. Just tell the truth.
Wingers are probably going nuts. Good.
Larry King should have had both of them on for the full hour but instead, as perhaps was to be expected, allowed the second half of the program to be devoted to a tabloid story. Also, there was an ad during the first half of the program for the oil and gas industry. CNN does not even try to disguise the fact that it has sold its soul in order to remain in the good graces of big corporate power.
Just finished watching the one on one between Moore and Gupta and I thought both sides let the other know where they need to focus their energies on.
Moore needs to be more clear on how "free" healthcare really isn't free.
Gupta needs to be more honest as he claimed Moore "fudged the facts", clearly Moore did not fudge any facts.
Conclusion? Nothing...nada....
Why? Because nobody bothered to explain that socialized healthcare will work long run. Just as important, nobody bothered to explain that our current system is NOT a free market in action. It is a combination of two ideologies. It is a mixture. It is not quite free and it is not quite socialized. As such, each "side" blames the other for reasons that actually do not even exist!!!
Moore thinks it is a profit driven industry, meaning it is capitalistic. It is not. It is money driven, but it is a fascistic method of money making.
Gupta thinks socialized healthcare will not work and claims that the current system is good because it is free. It is not. It is free for those in the industry, but it is not free to those who think of entering the industry.
Another conclusion:
We will never solve our problems if we continue to ignore the truly important issues and ignore what our current system really is all about. I think this is due to many people wanting to "sit on the fence", meaning they don't want to sound like a total "capitalistic pig", nor a "communist pig". They are afraid of continuing their own beliefs and thoughts to their logical conclusions because of what other people will think.
Or maybe they just don't have the required knowledge to make such a conclusion? I don't agree with Moore's idea of introducing universal healthcare, but I do like the way he is compassionate and only wants to have people live. I am just hesitant in how his ideas would actually be carried out by our inept government.
Assaulting Reasonable People
First, let me say, Michael Moore is the true American hero, and the main stream media hates the fact he exposes their advertisers. It was a true wonder and delight seeing him speak truths to those who have made a mockery our informative process. He's truly "stepping up to the plate" to meet the challenge facing our recovery from, what will be,8 years of the worse president this country has ever had.
The title speaks for itself; Al Gore wrote about how an "Assault on Reason" has affected our country. What Fox news, CNN and MSNBC are doing to Michael Moore is a actual assault on highly resourced "reason" major corporations don't want you to know. The corporations want Moore to shut the fuck up because they are not finished with our asses yet. The HMOs are just getting started, and the way they see it, there is no reason they should not beat the best of the oil company's record braking profit scandal.
As an individual, Moore has qualities similar to those who post comments in on these boards. He see things more for what they truly are, not for what they would like him to see. To Moore, if there were no WMDs, there should of been no invasion. The fact that Bush lied to get us into to this war makes him a murder suspect who should be brought up on charges to commit murder on a mass scale. That is the truth Moore sees.
For today, I got to feel the truth was told and those who would cover truth up could do nothing at the time it was being told. A sweet but fleeting moment.
Joseph
CNN's hitpiece on Sicko was pathetic. And ole White Beard? When's he actually going to start acting like the rest of us and speak with some emotional substance. He seems like a puppet who just goes on TV to make CNN seem like some serious news outlet. When MM gets right down to it, Beardy is pathetic!!!!
Although I found his moment of humanism at the end of Part 2 as he cracks a smile leaving MM to be very amusing...
Doggiebobo @ 8:
I just read Yahoo's headline article on this. The danger these people (BushCo) present to this country is really the reason the Dems need to impeach them. Everyone knows their idiots, but they have all the resources of the country at their disposal and they operate on a policy of disaster to the American people.
$1300 a year in additional tax, (to match my French freind), and, I get free healthcare for life. I'll do it.
Oversight @ 9:
How often does Dr Gupta let his patient Co-Pay be waived? I bet never
Captain America @ 72:
That's probably why Moore thanked him at the end of the interview; to show that Mr. Wolf Blitzer does indeed express likes and dislikes, and has personal bias, despite his well-feigned dispassion. And simply to thank him and mean it, as the more witnesses to an event, the more meaning it carries.
You guys don't get CBC:
Tommy Douglas and the story of Cats:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWKsR0gugww
You should also familiarize yourself with the Woodrow Lloyd premiership in 1962 in Saskatchewan:
"As Premier, Lloyd was responsible for implementing the universal health care plan that Douglas had introduced. Lloyd's government had to cope with the doctors strike of July 1962, in which the province's physicians, backed by the resources of the American Medical Association, withdrew service in an attempt to defeat the Medicare initiative.
Lloyd and his government refused to back down on the concept of a universal public health care system, and persuaded the doctors to settle after 23 days."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodrow_Lloyd
Why didn't Moore point out that highways are free--but we pay for them with our taxes. Does anyone remember TV Nation, in which Moore pretends to boycott a federal highway because it's socialism?
And I hope Gupta is a better doctor than a journalist.
FranSix @ 76:
Btw, "Officials worry of summer terror attack"--exact same headlines 3 years ago.
I'm already boycotting CNN and FOX since they are more interested in something other than the news. It doesn't seem to help. Does anybody have a contact at CNN to complain?
Wolfie really changed his tune on the second half of Mike's interview.
Wolf has interview a lot of people and he sensed, along with his producer, that here was a man who had his facts straight and that they were hanging in the wind. And Mike wasn't backing down. They knew exactly what he was saying.
I would say the questions became quite conciliatory.
You've got " work the ref " with these guys and never lay down. I wish it was different but the main stream media has pumped up the corporate talking points for so long, Michael Moore appears like someone from another planet to these guys.
I sometimes think Wolfie has some sort of corporate logo stitched on his underwear. Maybe before the second part he and CNN had a theirs changed.
Frank Bearing @ 78:
Awesome interview...I think Michael Moore is one-of-a-kind! I have always heard that Bill Clinton was a person that weather you liked him or not, when he walks into a room people cant help but pay attention to his charizma. I believe Michael Moore would be the same way. As for a Universal Healthcare, I can not help but agree that our country needs to have one. How about raise taxes a bit and everyone from the President to the lower class pays a standard co-pay...$20.00?
If we had one democratic candidate that spoke the truth like Moore does, it would be a cake-walk. Hillary and even Obama now are now hedgeing. I have hopes for Edwards, he was the first to tell faux news to bite it. Kucinich (sp?) is the best choice so far. We need a candidate with guts. Please .... Al Gore...we need you now...
Truth should trump politics. The fact that it doesn't proves we are in deep doo-doo.
I haven't watched part II, but I have to admit that Blitzer is due some credit here for a certain amount of humility. He conceded that MM's criticisms of the MSM were fair points. Also he didn't get all defensive, and also to be fair he did let MM have his say.
Re the possibility of Michael Moore interviewing Bush: Obviously isn't going to happen. But once, when Clinton was president he was calling radio stations in New York electioneering for his wife and he accidentally called the radio station where Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! works. She interviewed Clinton for 15 minutes asking back-to-back hard questions. Quite interesting. Never happened before and no doubt never will again. You can find it at democracynow.org.
watched the second part today july 10 watched most of the situation room show, hey cnn where were your pharma and health insurance commercials... dont like running them when michael is telling it like it is...
Most has already been covered but I wanted to add that this main stream cable news vs Micheal Moore is nearly as important as the Movie itself. You can make a movie of this importance but it is the follow up that gets things changed.
Moore is really kicking ass lately.
While we're on CNN, how come we heard about the "librul DA" 24x7 on Duke LaCrosse thing (because Rush Limbaugh pushed it, white victims of an out of control DA), but an out of control racist DA who sentences 6 black kids to 100 years in prison for a SCHOOL FIGHT gets ZERO press from CNN:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/10/1413220
http://play.rbn.com/?url=demnow/demnow/demand/2007/july/video/dnB2007071...

http://play.rbn.com/?url=demnow/demnow/demand/2007/july/video/dnB2007071...
Because corporate racist stooges Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Malkin, and the whole gang pushed the Duke/LaCrosse "out of control librul DA" story, and ANBCBSNNX is beholden to the Republican Noise Machine.
Saw "Sicko" a couple of nights ago. I have a profound conviction about that film: It is dangerous. It is dangerous to our corrupt government and all its phony leaders. It may well become the vehicle that triggers the coming revolution.
Watching that leaves me with slightly mixed feelings. It's exhilarating mind-boggling to actually hear someone say those things on TV in 2007. At the same time, it's saddening that it's so rare. He comes off as clear, strong, uncompromising and principled. He probably doesn't think of himself as a leader, but he is.
I watched the Larry King Moore vs. Gupta debate tonight and Moore kicked his butt!
Gupta's hidden agenda came out when started pushing the GOP slogan:
government is bad and can't do anything right BS
This of course overlooks the fact that the average HMO has an overhead of 17% while Medicare has an overhead of 3%.
Moore handled it well and responded, “Yes, there was a time when government worked. FDR defeated the Nazi’s and the Japanese in less time than it has taken the Bush administration to secure the road from the Baghdad Airport to the city of Baghdad. President Kennedy said that we would put a man on the moon in eight years and we did. The problem isn’t government, it is who we are electing into those government positions now.”
See this re Paul Keckley PhD, not MD:
The Deloitte Center for Health Solutions has developed a $70 billion plan to provide universal coverage. Under the basic plan, the federal government would pay $24 billion a year and individuals would cover the remainder through premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. The monthly premium would be $177 a month, with individuals paying $94 of that.
Paul Keckley, director of the Deloitte center, called the cost of treating the uninsured when they show up in emergency rooms "a hidden tax" that is built into every premium paid by insured workers.

Actually this is true. I was at a party and met a official that works in one of the arms of law enforecement and he told me this the last week of May. There will be another attack in the USA this summer if their intel is correct based on intercepted conversations.
zortman @ 95:
Michael Moore mentioned this guy and said that CNN was presenting him as an "expert" but failed to mention his financial ties to the Insurance industry. King choked a bit at this and tried to gloss over it.
I did a bit of fact checking on who Paul Keckley is and found his resume on-line. It turns out that he does have a long history of creating companies who sell services to insurance companies as well as hospitals... mostly for data management of all the paper work that the insurance industry creates!
Michael Moore is right again!
Here is a link to his resume:
http://www.owen.vanderbilt.edu/vanderbilt/data/faculty/189cv.pdf
I could not believe how CNN twisted the reporting. Dr. Gupta was simply VERY dishonest and lying! How can CNN do this? Here is a list of people at CNN you should write to
'wolf.blitzer@cnn.com'; 'lou.dobbs@turner.com'; 'rick.davis@turner.com'; 'lklshow.ideas@cnn.com'; 'sam.feist@cnn.com'; 'jim.walton@turner.com'; 'rena.golden@cnn.com'; 'jack.cafferty@cnn.com'; 'david.doss@cnn.com'
Right on Michael Moore. Dr. Gupta's priorities are screwed up. He mentioned shorter waits "when seeking non-emergency" care. Who cares if someone can get liposuction a week earlier? Dr. Gupta should explain what happens when people don't seek medical care because they don't have the money. If Dr.Gupta doesn't know then I'll tell him my uncle's story. My uncle is a very simple man, who lives a simple life. He got sick a couple of years ago, but he didn't have enough money to see a doctor. About two weeks later, his wife insisted that she take him to a hospital because his condition deteriorated. He collapsed at the hospital and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. He was put into a medically diagnosed coma for two months to reduce his fever and to save his strength. When he finally was okay to leave the hospital he had to go to rehab to rebuild his lung capacity. He did not have health insurance, so who paid for all of this? The government. A universal health care program would have probably saved millions of dollars. My uncle would have not had to initially worry about paying to see a doctor, which would have prevented the severity of pneumonia and his hospital stay.

I doubt that!
I saw Gupta interviewed on Bill Maher's HBO show a few weeks ago. I never watched his CNN reports before; the reason I remembered this face, was for his total non answer to a question Bill had about the honey bee population decline issue. Gupta danced around and blatantly didn't answer the question. While I can understand the man is a trained in a totally different field as a neuro-surgeon, what struck me was his inability to answer a question or to just say he wasn't versed on the issue...just my two cents. Anyway I think Michael is doing our country a service by raising these health care issues.
Cheers,
Jim
I watched the Moore vs Gupta debate on Larry King Live and of course Michael Moore got the better of Gupta. Michael you make us proud. Thank you for standing up for what is right. I wish there were more people like you. YOU should run for President!

Lana - not in this lifetime
CNN needs to apologize to Moore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would have liked Moore to throw in the RON PAUL chip, and ask Israel-Blitzer why the MSM is bending over backwards to hide any poll that clearly shows Ron Paul ahead by 80% or more, over any of the other scheissters, including Hillary-Israel-Clinton.
That would have raised some more awareness.
Here's my really "lucky" health Care story. Worth the read.
2 Years ago at the age of 38, I was as always an extremely healthy guy, never ever sick and for about 3 years prior I had no Insurance beacuse I was self employed and my Wife had been layed off from her Job so we lost her coverage. So as healthy 30 somethings we decided to skip Health Insurance for the time being because it was gonna cost about $800 or $1000 a month. We simply could not afford it and figured we wouldnt need it.
3 years into this No Health Insurance lifestyle all is well. Then one day I get a call that my older sister became ill with some serious issues. I decided then that maybe it was time to look for Health Insurance just in case. So in March 2005 I found a website that offered Health plans and found a sweet deal for about $300 a month for 2 people. The coverage seemed decent so we went for it. The application went out and the plan would take affect on May 1st.
On Around May 7, with Insurance card in my wallet, I went to a mall to buy a shirt. As I tried on a shirt at the store I felt a Bump on my neck. The next day the bump was still there...hmmm... quickly I went to the doc....battery of tests....and finally on June 21st 2005 I was told by my doctor that I had Thyroid cancer....holy shit! That day is still a nightmare..it was totally unexpected.
After the shock, I couldnt believe my luck in getting health insurance when I did. Had I not had HI I seriously don't know what I would have done. In July 2005 surgery some treatment and 2 years later all is fine, luckily Thyroid Cancer is highly treatable I didnt even need Quimo...just a little radioactive iodine pill 1 time.
Anyway....there was a moment though when the Health Insurance called me and started questioning me about the timing of it all. They quickly suspected that I knew about my condition when I decided to get Insurance...which was rediculous cause I hadnt seen a doctor UNTIL after I had HI...but they poked around made calls and tried to find a way around treating me....but my doctors office staff gave them their piece of mind and I never heard from them again.
Well thats my story.....I was a "lucky" one...imagine the people that dont have insurance....Universal Health care NOW!
I, like everyone here, thought Moore kicked ass but I think he missed an opportunity to better articulate the real issue. All this "fact-checking" is simply designed to discredit "Sicko's" over-arching message and by extension Moore and all his previous work. These details and their veracity are largely irrelevant to the film's point. The real issue here is the media's propensity to bring its 'authority' to bear on those talking points that better support its own relations of power. Moore hit hard on it in part one but the notion of CNN's responsibility to its viewers could have generated an important dialogue.
Maybe Moore's next film should take on the News Media.
I hope when the servers are back up that you replace this with a better file.
The audio is crummy and so is the video. I don't like UTube links because you can't blow them up and see the picture. I don't have a TV so the net is all I have to check out what is going on. I like to read the runs on the bottom of the screen.... you know... see it all.
Let's face it - this IS the legacy left by Reagan during the 1980s. He said "less government is better government" and unleashed all Republicans to treat anyone who believes government can play any role as a communist or socialist. Never mind he never answered the question about what government we need less of - such as the government that runs the military, runs the fire department or the police force - he simply said let's divide the nation into those who agree with my views and therefore are "real Americans" and the rest who disagree and are therefore traitors who love communism, socialism and the Soviets.
Well, the Soviets are gone, brought down by their poor economic system which many already knew was going to be that regime's fate. However, we still have a whole generation of people who continue to divide America. Strange how so many "conservative Republicans" detest government yet continue to collect government checks as they inhabit Congress, the Executive branch and the Courts.
Some above have made some excellent comments, especially on how the media needs to get some spines. That is quite true. Actually, though, all Americans need to muster the courage to stand up and say the truth - the current Republican Party actually hates America and will be the cause of America's collapse someday. Other nations around the world are focusing on how to improve their countries and the lives of their people in them; US Republicans are concerned only with tearing down and dividing, reducing in size and going back to a time when they, mostly as the baby-boomers they are, remember in the 1950s when answers were so simple, or so it seemed.
It is unfortunate, because there are actually some good Republicans out there, but they are criticized by their own party relentlessly or are too busy trying to do a good job that they cede valuable air time to all-image-and-no-substance types like Fred Thompson, who acts tough and as though he is indeed no "waffler", although he himself has waffled between a career in politics (aka government) and acting throughout his life.
Here the opinion of a Spaniard (that lived in your country for 3 years and is grateful to the US for so many things). We love Michael very much at this shore of the ocean. It's amazing people like that exist. Just one person can make a whole country look at his navels... thanks Michael, you are literally saving lives with what you are doing. I'm looking forward to watch the new movie!
Doggiebobo @ 4:
What else would pop up, the words?
It's obvious Michael Moore is all about silencing the critics.
Just watched Larry King's shootout between Michael Moore and Dr. Gupta. Michael Moore came off as a Cherry Pickin' Coward. So afraid of being called out for his tactics because he feels it'll hurt his PROFITS. Dr. Gupta EXPOSED Michael for his SELECTIVE use of statistics from varying sources.
First I'd like to say that we are all indebted to Mr. Moore for the way he stands up for us against big business as shown in this interview..
That being said, did anyone else have Team America deja vu when Moore compared stats of deaths related to lack of health insurance to being 9/11 x 6 x 12 years or something to that effect?
Does anyone think it was a deliberate Team America reference? It sure made me chuckle.
My Experiences with the Canadian Health Care System
I live in Canada and I am a little bored of hearing some of the negative statements about the wait times in the Canadian health care system. So here is the medical story of my family. I am not claiming that all patients in Canada receive the same type of treatment but the following is completely true.
1. In 1987 I was diagnosed with metastatic testicular cancer. I was diagnosed on a Thursday, operated on a Friday, discharged on the Sunday, waited a week for the stitches to be removed and then underwent four sessions of high dose chemotherapy requiring a week's hospitalization for each session. During this time, I had CAT Scans, Xrays, daily blood work, etc. The total cost was $0.
2. Recently I suffered from a bout of diverticulitis and my doctor sent me for a CAT Scan to rule out a reoccurence of my cancer. My wait time for the CAT Scan was two or three days. I was then scheduled for a scrotal ultra-sound and my wait time was about a week. The tests revealed I was ok but I have to go back in six months for follow ups. Total cost $0.
3. Approximately three years ago (November 2004) my father complained of arm pain and went to see his local doctor. He referred him immediately to a cardiac specialist who ordered a series of tests. These tests were all done within about a week and it was determined that he had number of blocked arteries. So they then ran some more exhaustive tests to see if the implanting of stints could solve the problem. Unfortunately, these tests indicated that he actually required bypass surgery. He waited two days and a quintuple bypass was performed (the operation lasted something like four hours). The surgery took place on Remembrance Day and staff came in to do the operation. Impressive but even more so my father still jogs! Total cost $0
4. In the early 90's my mother was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. Sadly she died from her illness but at no point during her treatment including multiple surgeries, multiple chemotherapautic treatments, numerous hospitalizations, did she have to wait any time for her treatments. Moreover, she was treated with absolute dignity and professional care. Total cost $0
5. Last year my brother went to the emergency room complaining of coughing up blood. It was SuperBowl Sunday and he went in at about 9.00 pm. The emergency staff suspecting pneumonia hospitalized him on the spot and started a course of IV antibiotics. The next morning he went for a series of tests to rule out lung cancer. These tests thankfully were negative and he was released later in the day with a prescription of oral anti-biotics. Total cost $0.
6. My sister has given birth to three children ... no wait time ... total cost $0.
7. My father-in-law just had double-knee replacement surgery. His wait time was negligible although there was a medically required wait time between the first surgery and the second one. He can walk again. Total cost $0.
I could go on here but as is clear my family has suffered from a serious of serious medical situations but we are entirely satisfied with the treatment we have received up here in Canada and we have no real complaints.
This is not to claim, however, that the medical system here is perfect. Far from it but to suggest that we have to wait an interminable period of time for medical treatment at least in our experience is simply untrue.

I personally thought Gupta won the debate on Larry King. He had Moore speechless at one point. Moore didn't directly answer a lot of Gupta's questions, especially the one regarding taxes.
I think the most significant element to SickCo is that it force American to speak about very important issues without dividing ourselves along party line or without trying to identify ourselves as "green" or some other ideology which misses points that are important to all American. On one hand we the elite that say we will sacrifice all the young American lives that it take to fight the war in Iraq. This perspective clearly demonstrate that the elite has no values for the lives of those fighting the war. The young men and women fighting the war are from modest to very modest backgrounds that actually believes in God and country. They want the basic: house, retirement, health care, and to send their children to college. Basically we all want the same things, but we are unable to see how common we are because we allow ideology of the elite to divided us. SickCo gives us one focus that reveals the wolves in sheet clothing. Dr. Gupta can regain credibility by admitting that he was wrong. Dr. Gupta should admit that he fudge the facts. This is not and I hope Americans will stop substituting preference and perception for truth. No one listens to Bill O' Riley for the truth; they listen to him because they want to validate their hatred for particular groups. At the end of the day it is the blacks fault that 47 million Americans do not have health care and the national debt is so high. I also heard that they hid the WMD in Mexico.
Dr. Gupta did apologise and admit his mistakes in the segment right after Moore part II. I would not say he was contrite but he mouth the words...
Michael Moore and Me
Freedom and Benevolence Go Together
by John Stossell
Neither Michael Moore, nor the left, has a monopoly on good intentions. If he is able to raise the awareness enough to spur much-needed changes in or health-care system, then good for him. But his methods, means and motivations are all very questionable.
Thanks for quoting John Stossell, Dennis. He's another one of your "fair and balanced" wingers.
dr. G @ 114:
That's so right on!
Dr. Acula @ 121:
Not to argue, but I didn't quote him, Doc. I just linked his article and gave my own commentary. The guy gives 25% of his income to charity. I think that says some things about his sense of fairness AND balance.
Here is the feedback I wrote to The Situation Room:
Please feel free to use bits and pieces if you would like to send feedback as well.
Attention "conservatives". Please answer this simple question. WHY ARE YOU AGAINST UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE?

Simon Brown @ 116:
Thanks for your very important first hand knowledge. Good luck with your future health. At least you are in better hands than many Americans are.
I thought, after all the fat cats had their say on here, that your story was worth repeating. Thanks again.

Where's Vixen, Donner, and Blitzen?
Or even that vixen Donna Dixon?
I could go for some Blintzes right now.
marbotty @ 127:
Thaty'll be the day.
Well, I'm moving to Canada when I graduate college. The health-care and corrupt government is driving me crazy.
I'll watch C-tv instead of CNN.
Oh, and Earth to morons: If we remove all the insane amount of money people put into the health-care industry and implement higher taxes... you're STILL paying less money. Think about it!
Furthermore... I do realize this whole 'we pay shit loads into the health-care industry' but you know what? Remove all the profit the corporations gain from this. This number will dwindle much lower.
Gupta was clearly circular in his "arguments" supposedly verifying his factual inaccuracies; is he nuts (or just a slime bag)?
yeah sure you know Moore has alot to talk about when it comes to the problems with this country you know the funny thing is that i was a Conservative now i am libertarian i don't think either party should be in power we need a new one and the senate cant get any thing done any ways why vote if nothing is being passed......
The strawman in this argument is the term HEALTH CARE. Some people call this SOCIALIZED MEDICINE. Let's get this right so we all know what's being discussed. The issue is HEALTH INSURANCE for all Americans. Nobody is suggesting that all medical care be administered by government doctors in government facilities. No matter what the nay-sayers say, the US Federal government is the only entity that can make a national health insurance plan work. Certainly there will have to be a lot of oversight, but there's no reason why a federal single payer system can't be totally transparent. Also, it isn't going to be FREE! There will be the usual co-pays and deductables, though far less than private insurance. If someone starts ranting about 'socialized medicine', bring them back to reality...keep saying INSURANCE, until they get it!
Joe @ 48:
I hope that Michael will incorporate future podcasts on his website (audio, or preferably video)! This will serve the younger people very well.
I agree totally with the movie. What we have to realize is that free health coverage will only work if we do an overall change in society and this corrupt government. 1300 extra in taxes a year may not be alot to some but it is to others we need first to financially educate people first.
The film does alot in educating the public but we need to do our part as well in making people aware of whats going on in America: the corruption in government, the loss of financial education in the public school system, the environmental changes that are accurring right before our eyes.
The media cannot be relyed on to discuss important issues that will effect all of us because there is to much private interest. We need as individuals to take the lead in our own communities and educate our neighbors friends families and tell them that you may look at life through your eyes right now in the present and think that it is ok but if you look through mine and look toward our future with the leaders we have now and the conditions that we live in now everything looks like its going to hell.
side note: i live in new york all my life i have never heard of an AIR quality WARNING Until now. How stupid people are to still not realize on our present environmental course that we are not looking good. What, does a tree need to spontaneously catch on fire before people see we are in trouble.
Michael Moore is right about health care something needs to be done. Who cares is Cuba is ahead or behind the U.S. on a list? Who cares about anything but the fact that people in this country are being killed for profit and many are being left to die because there job doesn't offer insurance. A lot of places just offer insurance to the employee and not the spouse as well.
Now don't get upset but guess what? Which other news station let Michael Moore on to argue his points, and the big debate between Dr. Gupta and Michael Moore is good because now more and more people are looking at health care. So I want to thank all of them, Michael Moore, Dr. Gupta, and Wolf Blitzer for allowing Michael to come on the show, and follow up several times. What they did is good for America! Peace!
This new "gut" feeling of a terror attack is scary!! I guarantee it is "allowed to happen" to lead us to war with IRAN!! Whoops, we had a slip in "intelligence", we were tracking Al Queda, and guess what? It turned out to be Hezbollah from Iran. Wanted dead or alive, preemptive strikes, draft, "nukular" weapons, punishment, hunt them down, war on terror, 9-11, imminent threats, coalition of the "willing", smoke em out of their holes, and the infamous REGIME CHANGE!!!! Re-iterated turd words from King George the 2nd that will be used again in the very near future to invade Iran. Get used to it folks, this in the "NEW WORLD ORDER"!!! A global economy under the elites thumb. I appreciate every piece of work that Mr. Michael Moore has given us, it always turns out to be true and starts change for the better. We need more people like him. Be prepared for a Presidential interruption on t.v. soon with Bush saying, " My fellow Americans, on my order, I have mobilized and authorized full use................................. you know the rest. Oh Canada!
Gupta is not used to listening to people - only used to reporting. Getting caught up with minor number differences......... I lost respect for Larry tonight. More and more CNN reminds me of a government broadcasting corp like SABC (South Africa) in the 80's. What boggles the mind is that CNN is an independent money making (but then all of america is money making) brodcasting corp. Propaganda! Now you know why americans cannot understand why they are not liked or hugely respected.................. because they do not question the b&*#s@it independent broadcasting dishes out to them. America wake up. Criticising the war does not insult the soldiers, .........Iraq had NOTHING to do with 911. Listen past your comfort zone.
hadenuf @ 24:
My "gut feeling" is that we are trying to create another fear campaign. The British have done a remarkable job in keeping the rhetoric and fear mongering under control all while facing some very serious threats. We on the other hand have yet to identify or arrest any people who are involved in this supposed new attack that Chertoff has mentioned about this summer.
I call it Homeland Insecurity. This group needs to be disbanded and sent home.
Another thought that comes to mind is that the focus on Iraq gets diverted with this "gut feeling" scare tactic. The days of trying to act like an intelligent administration are over, we are no longer fooled nor do we have any confidence in the ability to govern or the intelligence to function. This administration is a joke and no one is laughing.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is clearly in the back pocket of the medical establishment, his previous reports always tries to trash nutrients and alternative treatments. Mr. Gupta is a typical arrogant self-righteous doctor; are real ASShole. His demeanour is typical of many doctors, jerks that are accustomed to nurses and the general public kowtowing to them and kissing their asses. Mr. Gupta isn't used to being talked back to and defeated on the intellectual plane (big ego-sore loser syndrome). Well he was in way over his head trying to take on Michael Moore. Moore squashed him like a bug.
Make your point honestly Michael! Don't FUDGE the numbers just to make your case.
[Are you serious? He did not FUDGE the numbers, as claimed by Dr Gupta. He didn't need to-Sitemonitor]
hadenuf @ 80:
Maybe it's summer re-runs. It's cheaper to run with what's already in the can than to come up with something new. And I'm talking about the Feds, not the news media.
Dr. Gupta's typical Right Wing tactic of "blowing smoke" by picking on details was clearly well used this time. I was laughing though my tears to view the comedy of Gupta arguing over the factual inaccuracy of whether the Cubans spent 250 $ per month or was it 225? . . . or was it 226.03 $ or What? The fact that it was about twenty eight times less, for almost the same results - and
by a third world country - was lost in the smoke. I long for the time when we will have enough power with the media to show a collage of incidents like that, exposing the lying Right Wing hacks and their criminal intent. We deserve more from a journalist and a lot more from a doctor - who's interest should be plainly in the service of the public health, ESPECIALLY, if he is also a public media figure. We should demand that Gupta's License to practice be pulled.
The simple truth is, if Dr. Gupta did his job, "Sicko", wouldn't have to be done. And another simple fact is that Dr. Gupta, having the media clout that he does, could do it almost single-handed.
Imagine the impact if he came out in total support of the message conveyed by "Sicko" - and did it without trying to put down Micheal's personality or character in the process. I think we all have had enough of this foul logic that says that any fact can be diluted 50% in the name of "Fair and Balanced" - that any truth is only solid if it does not challenge corporate dominance.
CNN and Gupta are nothing more than a mouth piece for the White House and their reporting does nothing more than support the status quo. Speaking as a single mother and an uninsured adult - I've really had it with all main stream media and the politicians. None of the candidates know how to fix any of serious issues we face in this country today and that includes the healthcare crisis.
So very proud of how brave Michael Moore stuck to his guns live on CNN. So smart of him to insist on being LIVE! No way he would have been aired, no way. I am worn thin by the insurance industries after being a "provider" for over 20 years. I no longer practice thanks to their mercenary practices. I, however, kept it all personal and did not dare to translate my experience into a political purpose. I so admire brave Michael Moore. Thank you. Madge
Simon Brown @ 116:
Ditto. I'm in Canada, too. A few years ago, my vision was getting progressively worse. I noticed that I was seeing rainbow-coloured rings around the full moon--a sign of cataracts. Well, I was 57 at the time, really kind of young for cataracts, but my optometrist sent me to a cataract specialist who offered to do the required surgery in two weeks--if I wanted to pay $2000 for special blue-blocking lenses to replace my original equipment (the blue-blocking lenses are not covered by government health insurance). For the government-covered surgery ($0), I'd have to wait about a year. So I got a referral to another specialist, the head of ophthalmic surgery at one of Toronto's largest hospitals. He said that the "blackmail" for blue lenses was unconscionable, especially since there's no proof that they actually do anything. He also said that I'd normally have to wait months for cataract surgery, but since I was still working and needed my eyes for my livelihood, he'd do the first eye in a couple of weeks and the second a month after that. And that's what he did. Including all the tests, consultations, surgeries, and follow-ups . . . $0.
I'm thinking of moving back to the U.S., but I'm concerned that health insurance will be a nightmare. Oh well, I can always return to Canada, as long as our Bush-loving lapdog of a Prime Minister and his wannabe neo-con cronies don't destroy what we have here.
Noah Harris @ 134:
You're 100% right. There is no socialized medicine in Canada. It's government-run health insurance. Doctors are not told when and where to practice. People can go to see any doctor they wish to see. You can go to any hospital you want. There are no "off-limits" hospitals, because they are all government funded (with very limited exceptions).
Regarding Guliani,
Amazing how he could say anything, especially with a big fat veiny corporate cock in his mouth.
Amazing!
Three points:
(1) Let's stop calling it "Socialized Health Care" and instead call it "Universal Health Care", which is what it really is.
(2) Stop giving that asshole "Dr." Gupta more credit than he deserves; call him MISTER Gupta like the rest of us.
(3) MISTER Gupta was such a slob in his reporting, he didn't even come up with his own hachet job, instead he seems to have used the Associated Press (AP) hachet job on Sicko as the outline for his libelous assault on Michael Moore. You wonder if he used to copy his assignments and lab reports too while in med school?
