I thought this was a fascinating look at the GOP stealth candidate...
For months, conservative evangelical activists have been fretting over a Republican presidential field whose front-runners are the pro-abortion rights Rudy Giuliani, the formerly pro-gay rights Mitt Romney, and John McCain, who once lambasted Jerry Falwell. Activists took little consolation in more socially conservative candidates, like former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee or Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, who seemed doomed by low name recognition. Now the Christian right is eyeing former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, who is thought to be on the verge of entering the race. And Thompson is waging a rigorous behind-the-scenes effort to win its support.[..]
The success of the effort is by no means ensured; in March, Focus on the Family's James Dobson told U.S. News that he doubted Thompson was really a Christian. But Dobson and Thompson have since talked, with Dobson rumored to be reassessing Thompson. And prominent social conservative Paul Weyrich, who met recently with Thompson and evangelical activists, said the former senator "was in agreement with us on almost everything."
And then there's the little matter of Thompson's missing FEC filing...
It's sad that there are people in this country so fucking stupid that they'll base their vote on whether James Dobson is satisfied that someone is a Christian.

Fred Thompson already appeals to the center 80% of voters, he is not going to pick up any votes to speak of on the far left, so it makes sense to at least attempt to answer some of the concerns of the right and far right I keep seeing idiots on this board talking about Fred's pretty wife and being an actor and an attorney, but I have not heard much of substance. He is FOR low taxes and less government interference in our lives, NOT MORE. He is basically supportive of the 2nd amendment and has been consistent on this. He does NOT want the failed policies of Hillary Clinton, the Candadians and others who have tried socialized medicine and now find themselves waiting 20-30 weeks for a simple appointment. Hillary and Edwards, and likely Obama will RAISE taxes and dump the previous tax cuts. Several of them will tax corporations and small to medium sized businesses into oblivion. There is also NO way these Democrats are going to put economic power and decisions into the hands of their "subjects" by instituting a fair tax system. Fred Thompson is not interested in appointing social engineers to the Supreme Court. There are clear differences between a conservative and a socialist and the differences are wider than the Grand Canyon. Fred Thompson offers a refreshing choice to many Republicans who were also not thrilled by President Bush and the current Congress. To reject a President and Vice President is one thing, a strong swing to a socialistic society is not the right way for our republic to go. Many independents, libertarians, and undecided will move toward Fred Thompson and AWAY FROM Hillary Clinton and more of Bill Clinton. Her negatives are so high, I wonder the intelligence of those proposing her nomination and election. I would hope that voters are NOT that stupid. If you try to leap over the Grand Canyon, you need to consider two things, first whether you can leap over that far, and what you will get when you are on the other side. Please be very careful what you wish for.
