As noted earlier, Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law Chairwoman Linda Sánchez ruled to reject the White House's privilege claims as a basis for refusing to comply with the Committee's subpoena for White House documents, and the ruling was upheld by the Subcommittee. Full Committee Chairman John Conyers has just written a letter to White House counsel Fred Fielding informing him of the ruling and warning of consequences to come should the White House not comply by 10 a.m. on Monday July 23, 2007.  Read the letter here...

I like when Randi Rhodes talks about Josh's picture collection of 43's hands

"If I do not hear from you in the affirmative by then, the Committee will have no choice but to consider appropriate recourse."

What recourse, Congressman? What are you going to do when (not if) Fielding refuses to comply? Are you going to send another warning? Are you going to issue an arrest warrant? Are you going to do anything at all?

Or what, they'll have another meeting?

Hot air. Lock Bolton in the cloakroom. Bush will pardon him. Write a law, Bush will use signing statements. Take him to court ... Bush owns the courts .... all of them. File charges ... Gonzales will piss on them ... impeach him ... he will invoked presidential directive 51 and ALL THE COPS AND GENERALS WILL GO ALONG WITH HIM.

CHECK MATE IDIOT.

You are Bush's bitch Conyers ... get to know it and love it.

This is the showdown.

It's going to be the beginning of the end for the Monkey President if the Dems win, or...

The beginning of the Theocratic police-state if the Dems lose...and the needless end of hundreds of soldier's lives.

Now, bear in mind that an environment now exists where I can have all my assets seized indefinitely for simply making the above statement. This is not an exaggeration.

Next step is inherent contempt- and there is no executive privilege or refusal for this one. this is all handling within Congress, from literal capture & haul in, to jailing. Conyers has made this path plain, and this is why Bush is trying to claim privilege, now, in hopes he can bluff his way out of this. Won't work- Bush has no power or way around this, outside of thinking he can use his guard to prevent the Sargent at Arms from hauling in the criminal.

He should give them until 10:00 AM to bring forth Michael Bolton.

Talk about crimes against the world. Jeez.

Think he'd order the military to execute a coup?

In some recent post someone said alluded to the Republican blitzkrieg against Democrats since 2000 and the fact that the Dems seem to be constantly bringing a knife to a gunfight. I certainly hope Conyers, Boxer, and others like them will turn up the heat under Schumer and Reid and start fighting back with all the strength they can muster.

I'd love to see them use inherent contempt against bolton and meyers. Send the Sgt at Arms and haul them in for immediate trial.

In reality that deadline will pass and they will whine and send another letter. Pretty please, with sugar on top?

Waxman is investigating 50 different crimes, how about we follow ONE or TWO of them all the way through to the end before starting on the next one. We need some resolution.

That's a really phallic piece of wood....

Rep. Conyers,

Sir, I have great respect for you and consider you a consummate gentleman, however, you have already extended concessions beyond graciousness to scoff law lot in the White House. Warrants ought to be in hand at 10:00 a.m., Monday, to be served at 10:01 when Mr. Bolton refuses to present himself with the requisite documents! So long as the lawless are not subjected to consequences of their disregard for law, they will persist and be further emboldened to commit ever more brazen outrages against our Nation.

Time to remove the gentlemanly gloves and remind this administration our Constitution provided a system to counter over reaching by the executive branch, precisely what we face with the current Constitutional crisis.

"including but not limited to proceedings under 2 U.S.C. §§ 192, 194 or under the inherent contempt authority of the House of Representatives"

This is the first time, AFAIK, that anyone in Congress has specifically made the threat to invoke inherent contempt. Conyers means to play hardball... Whether Pelosi will let him is another question.

Gates is an honest and reasonable individual and knows the "rule of law". In fact, he
has been asking military personnel in "high places" to draw up a plan for withdrawal and/or
redeployment if/when Gen. P's Sept. report is given; feeling as most of us do that no
significant improvement in the situtation within Iraq(militarilly or political) will occur.

This is ALWAYS the issue in any military coup. Who will the military side with. Why did the Soviet Union fall? Because of Yeltsin? LOL! No...the diehards in the Politburo folded because Yeltsin drove up ON A TANK.

Now. Let's look at reality. MOST of our military, including the National Guard, is OUT OF THE COUNTRY. Any general that has disagreed with this Administration's policies has either retired in shame, been forced out, fired, whatever. So, they are discredited. The soldiers remaining in this country will follow the orders of their LEADERS. They are soldiers, that is what they do.

The question is...would ANY of the Joint Chiefs in place now...go against this Administration when the chips are down.

We'll see.

I have been soooo wrong. I thought it was more important for Congress to work on passing legislation now that they have a majority, but without 60 votes in the Senate, it is futile. The most important task at hand today is to hold impeachment hearings on Bush and Cheney and for them to be televised on all the networks (just like Watergate) for all the world to see. Only when the ENTIRE NATION sees what these people have done can we rid ourselves of them and start over. It will also expose the GOP Congress that has set by as accomplices to these crimes.

It's definately worth your time to go to the gavel's home page and scroll down to read Chairwoman Linda Sánchez's reasoning. The white house is ignoring all request and she notes that.

I agree with your analysis. Congress should start with Cheney. Then Bush with the trial (which they would lose) to be held in October of 2008 - a democratic October surprise. Expose ALL the crimes to the world just prior to the November elections. They will have the 2008 election so caged and rigged that it will take something that extreme to change the balance.

Just arrest those bastards.

PS. xargaw, yes, we know you were wrong. Nyah, nyah, told you so!

Now we have to get to work. We must absolutely FLOOD Congress with demands for the impeachment of BOTH Bush and Cheney, and the prosecution of the entire Executive Branch.

These criminals can't be allowed to get away with it! If they do, you can bet your bottom dollar the next bunch will be even worse.

Whether or not this occurs NOW is really not the issue.

When you look at what has gone on, does any reasonable person believe that this Administration is just gonna get up...and go home in January 2009?

It's not gonna happen. We will either have another rigged election that puts a GOP/Bush lackey in the White House...or we will have a "national security event" that basically puts an end to our Constitutional law.

In any event, one day the people WILL be forced to wake up...it has ALWAYS happened in history...some times the people succeed, sometimes they don't...but it ALWAYS happens...and it is ugly...it is bloody...and oh so wasteful.

We are failing our children and our grandchildren as we speak.

consequences, consequences...all I ever hear is consequences ...but I never see them.

Maybe Conyers is going with the Chinese water torture technique: drip, drip, drip. Eventually Bush will be driven into madness because it will overtax his brain. Congressman Conyers it pains me to tell you this.....but the White House has already decided to ignore you. I believe that it would be best to start impeaching somebody, maybe start with the Bush family pet dog and work your way up!

Its not like I enjoy giving the dems hell.. but shit, look at the track record to date..... I'm sooo ready to see them do something, anything, real... And make it stick fer cryin out loud.. We've heard these kinds of proclamation before only to watch dumbstruck as Chimpies regime just thumbs its nose, involkes some kind of bullshit priviledge and laughs in their faces... After half a dozen or so of these incidences, it all sounds like a hollow charade.... And I'm damned tired of it.... If they want these people to talk about what they know, then arrest the fucks and drag them in in cuffs if they won't come willingly.. But for fucks sake, stop talkin and start doin... That's all I'm sayin....JD

Bob Roberts.

I keep posting to try to get people to realize that the game is over. I've fought the good fight, I've protested, I've written letters, I've campaigned, I've donated time and money, and I've cared deeply.

Since then, I've wisened up, and have come to understand a few truths about our history about which very few people know, or even care to know.

We're doomed, and it's meant to be that way. You can do what you want to do if it makes you happy and feel better about yourself, but I can tell you, it all will be in vain.

As the song lyrics go, "everybody knows that the good guy lost."

Orwell's Illegitimate Son @ 69:

I'm sorry, I just HAD to be Number 69.

I knew Number 69, and your no Number 69.

http://www.fiftiesweb.com/tv/get-smart-1.jpg

I don't know what the rest of you think, but John Conyers stands out to me as one of the most relentlessly principled of the dems. There may be something I'm missing, but for the past few years any time I've heard his name, it involves something admiral he's doing to stand up to the crazy republicans.

Inherent Contempt actions are in order. Impeach Bush and Cheney simultaneously. The assaults this aladministration has committed against the Constitution, the American People, Democracy and against the rule of law must be smacked down. These acts cannot not be allowed to stand - through precedent - for any other president's temptation. If they are allowed to stand, this country is finished. Stick the fork in it; it's done.

Now I'm kind of stuck. I don't agree with Orwell that things are hopeless, but I want to respond to Jack that the Republicans have concentrated so much power that there are limits to what the Democrats can accomplish.

So, is this gonna be "7 days in July, August, September, October...?

So?

So?

Let's wait until 10:00 am Monday. Maybe Conyers does have a plan. I like the rest of you would love to start seeing some frog-marching.

Those camps are there for you and me when they finally turn the machine loose on the citizenry.

Look, you need go no further than a history book to look at the rise and fall of the Nazi's and in particular the way Hitler was elected and then turned German democracy into a dictatorship to see this coming. We are Germany 2.0.

you said it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never posted here before, although I have on many other sites. I read through the comments and I only see one or two people that really get it. This is it folks. This is where either our Congress steps up and uses the only tool left, impeachment, and get to it before shrub declares martial law, or we move to revolution. You can scoff all you want, and you can try and deride people as conspiracy theorists, but if you didn't wake up today and read some news and come away realizing that all of the pieces have been put in place by our "dear leaders" then you haven't been paying attention for the last 3 or 4 years. Our Constitution is in taters...

Can I have mine with ketchup, preferably by immersion instead of dipping?

just leave a tip

AngryAmerican@82, we're with you. We shared the same 6-week depression/tears after the 2000/2004 elections without a doubt.
You bet we're at that 'moment' where it gets real for bush. Noticed the power grabs over the last 5 days (including the declaration that FEMA is now under the strict jurisdiction of the WH, think Blackwater, yanking the national guard from the states).
Accessing 'terr-ist' bank accounts (ours) in the states, we get the picture.
Just because he is beginning to flail doesn't mean he'll get away wth crowning himself.
Conyers is setting up INDICTMENTS systematically.

Bush the putz that he is doesn't have the manpower to stick people in detention camps, certainly not for 60 million of people, his enemies. You kiddin'? He won't be able to keep the groundswell of revolution from swamping everything he's built to rubble.
That's the hurry for the ID chips and the rest. Recall Biden telling Roberts at the supreme court nomination hearing that Roberts will be voting on that? We know how that asshole will vote. Oh, then you can't do anything without it, then we won't bank for awhile, we'll form communities and take up target practice for dummies. But they'll get a revolution over that as well from us!

Bush, we don't need what you got. We'll do without and be richer and wilder for it.

They are sitting back and laughing their asses off at the cowardice of the Democrats. They have won. Fielding will mumble something, no one will show, another letter will be sent while Rome is burnining. Today.....July 20, 2007......MARK IT. The Republic officially ended when President Bush pre-emptively said he, by fiat, decides who will tetify and who will not and the Peoples House can "go to Hell." Conyers, Pelosi, Reid, Leahy et al. Time is running out. If you don't impeach soon, you will never have the chance. Read the quote from Arch Conservative Paul Craig Roberts on Hartman yesterday. Listen to Impeachment author Bruce Fein. They are stealing out Democracy and they are doing it RIGHT NOW !!!!

xargaw @ 27:

I have been soooo wrong. I thought it was more important for Congress to work on passing legislation now that they have a majority, but without 60 votes in the Senate, it is futile. The most important task at hand today is to hold impeachment hearings on Bush and Cheney and for them to be televised on all the networks (just like Watergate) for all the world to see. Only when the ENTIRE NATION sees what these people have done can we rid ourselves of them and start over. It will also expose the GOP Congress that has set by as accomplices to these crimes.

Told ya so
Told ya so
Told ya so

Why was the National Guard, the very single Federal State first line of defende, sent to Iraq? Weekend warrior, nice old, and overweight civilian Americans who did some soldiering sometimes just for fun. Maybe that's why we have so many casualties.
They are namely civilians, head of families, with fest jobs, economic stability and a secure future. Was the plan to leave the
every State defenless for ulterior purpose? Is that where FEMA comes in case of Martial Law.

Are people aware of Posse comitatus wich means “the power of the county? There is a certain degree of erosion in this law, and I think that Bush and his minions are carefully considering their options, now that the National Guard is in bad shape.

Those camps being build, might be the shape of things to come.

anon @ 4:

You paint with too broad a brush, my friend. Many (if not most) cops and generals are decent, loyal Americans who can and will put partisan politics second to their sworn duty.

Bob Roberts @ 76;

I hear what you're sayin Bob... We're all kinda stuck because of that power concentration thing... Ya gotta give these bastards credit for the level of detail they put into this crazy plan of theirs to pervert our government structure to achieve their twisted ends. And, how they are all, even at this late date, still marching more in lockstep than not while this lunacy continues plays itself out..

Thing is, everytime the dems are punked by this regime when trying to hold it to some level of accountability for the criminality Bushco engages in as a routine matter? Everytime the dems have their pants pulled down and their little willies laughed at yet again? It just further degrades their own credibility in the eyes of those who would hope to see them champion responsible governance... And that in itself is just as dangerous to our form of government as what the Bush administration does by way of any other criminal mischief.

There's only one way to stop that shit.. You know it and I know it.. Action speaks louder than words... I have been for the last six plus years, and remain, disgusted at the sorry state we find our nation in as a result of these miscrants holding powers actions in all our names... I ain't quite ready to go the Orwell route and say the jig is up... But the clock it ticking and its getting pretty damned close to midnight in my opinion...

Someone somewhere, had better stop talking and start doing... something, for real... Or Orwell just might still be proven correct in that dark 'stick a fork in it' prediction.............JD

I've heard "Camps being built" referenced a few times in this thread. Do you have any links to news stories or reliable sources?

(I don't mean this as a taunt, I really do just want some more information.)

Define irony: (via wiki)

"Joshua Bolten plays bass guitar in a band called the Compassionates."

Of course there is lot of trash, but all in all, where there smoke....

Inherent contempt has a nice ring to it.

Liberal AND Proud @ 14:

... and I suppose you arent anonymous either? You both clearly think you in fact are Mr. Cobalt60 and Mr. Liberal and Proud.

I'm not a liberal, I'm a socialist and know a fascist thug when I see one. Civility doesnt work. He has already out maneuvered them. He is prepared right down to the fenced zones and camps and private military etc etc etc.

He has coopted the entire government. He has already coopted the military. He owns Justice and the courts. Is anyone paying attention? Conyers is involved in a futile excercise.

===
Anon has some good points there regarding the Administrations actions preparing for dictatorship. The white house website has his plans to start marshall law, seize property, imprison, all on any vague threat that he defines. We are in bad shape and I worry that even if Conyers, waxman, pelosi find the balls to stand up, it just won't matter.

My gosh you and Anon are pesimistic/negative and just, in my humble opinion, feeding
yourselves as to "gov./military takeover and marshal law, seizing property, etc." You
need to take a vacation and get away from this situation..have some R&R and fun
instead of all of your totally asinine, or at least riduculous, conspiracy theories.

Conspiracy theories .. you should read more. No prosecutions for contempt ... torture ... presidential directive 51 ... a trail of castrated generals ... private armies exempted from law ... none of this is speculation ... presidential directive authorizing treasury confiscation of property ... military commissions act ... am I making any of this up ... free speech zones ... signing statements ... inventor of signing states placed on supreme court by Bush (alito) ... monarchical political theories implemented (not my characterization, bruce fines) ... I could go on ...

Here, if I may, is your problem. Fascism and in fact dictatorship need not be uncomfortable. To assume it must is incorrect. Dont judge the situation by a 'comfort level', judge it with your mind.

... conspiracy theories ... not even close. Just a commentary on actual events and documented fact.

Was life in Nazi Germany all that uncomfortable before the U.S. et al. stepped into the picture? Actually asking, dumb question it may be...

Our government's answer to speaking out is more control, instead of knocking it off when the neighbours start complaining about the noise. And too many people buy in by willingly giving a crap about all the trite distractions strewn to keep people apathetic to in-depth political discussion...

Pussies.
No wonder the republicans mock the dems.
The only set of balls present in the democratic party belong to Hillary Clinton...and those are Bill's (she keeps them in an olive jar in her purse).
This is to the point of being sickening. The white house keeps defying the law and Congress refuses to do something about it.
Until someone, ANYONE in the Democratic gets a set of balls and stands up to the republicans, they will continue to use their obstructionist ways to cover for the criminals in the white house.
Damn, they almost make the DPJ here in Japan look good.

Yeah yeah yatta yatta...where is Harriet Meirs? Why isn't she in jail for contempt? Where is Condosleaza Rice, for that matter. The White House doesn't give a damn about the law, Conyers, or anything except their own agenda and their buddies' profits. This is an exercise in futility, and the gutless congresspeople will continue to chase their tails until Bush's term is over and he and his cronies have completely destroyed America, and then try to blame somebody else., ....

TiminJapan@102, see, mocking a country being taken over by fascism has to be uh, experienced to be appreciated. I've been saying for years the exits are being sandbagged after 2 elections were stolen from us. This is a very fresh experience capice`?
So far all the remedies/laws known by the dems (just back since 11-06 as majority) are being blatantly ignored by the bush admin. We have never experienced a rogue gov't before or what to do to be rid of them. Even tho they are majority the senate balance is too thin to make a difference apparently. There are dems in the congress who are corrupt preventing anything desperately needed to pass.
This is fresh territory for the people of the u.s. and it looks like we are the ones who will have to wrest the gov't back where it belongs, in our hands.
From my point of view, it appears neither party in either of the houses will have power.
The repugs who are somewhat principled are also being ignored by the WH.
We're entering wild territory.

Well, Germany in the 1920s was in serious trouble, the entente powers (France, Britain, Italy) were extremely vengeful, and heaped all the blame, and cost of the war on Germany. As a result, german economy was seriously in the shitter at the time Hitler seized power, by holding a few communist congressmembers away by force, giving NSDAP a simple majority to hand him absolute power. He rebuilt the nation from scraps, by employing people in huge public projects, (autobahn), but in order to focus the people, he used Jews, homosexuals, gypsies and underdeveloped people as punching bags, and scapegoats.

To compare Hitler to Bush is off by quite a bit, though one could substitute muslim being killed in droves for jews, Hitler rebuilt his country from a wreck, Bush had a healthy/wealthy one to destroy.

One very important note however: Remember one thing, the actual mass murder of Jews did not start until some 7-8 years after Hitler came to power, they were molested en masse in Germany for years, and then being sent to work camps. The actual murdering in droves, came during the war.
