Arlen Specter Disses Bush While On Board Air Force One
Via The New York Times:
Guests of President Bush aboard Air Force One generally know that he expects them to behave in a certain way: No showboating or mingling with the on-board press corps and, certainly, no criticizing the commander in chief or his team.
Senator Arlen Specter violated both points of decorum on Thursday. He visited with reporters aboard the presidential airplane before it lifted off for Philadelphia and lambasted the attorney general.
Mr. Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, wandered back into the press cabin as the plane sat on the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base before the president arrived from the White House.
According to a pool report of the encounter, Mr. Specter expressed anew his criticism of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, but said he saw no signs that Mr. Gonzales would be forced to resign. Mr. Specter attributed Mr. Gonzales’s job security to Mr. Bush’s “personal loyalty” to him. Read more...
Oops.

First!
Spector is just playing the role and reading from the script that Karl Rove gave him.
Specter seems to be torn between party loyalty and his conscience, until he can figure out which side he is on, he should quit tallking.
I dunno...I would "think" even he would have enough of this B.S.
After a while it becomes less and less of a Left/Right issue and it is seen as an American issue.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt.....for now.
Bubble Boy keeps Abu Gonz on because of Gonzo's loyalty to Bubble Boy, not the other way round.
Protecting Preznit Toad-Exploder's butt at all costs.
Hm, I wonder how long until Mr. Specter is placed under the Imperius Curse?
spector is and always has been a bush enabler. Any disagreements he may seem to have with the boy king are all political theatre designed to cover his sorry ass.
"Mr. Specter attributed Mr. Gonzales’s job security to Mr. Bush’s “personal loyalty” to him."
When is America and congress going to tire of this? Bush has proven himself time and time again to be more loyal to his incompetent cronies than to the constitution and the people of this country which he swore to.
The fish stinks from the head. Congress, impeach Bush and Cheney first then work your way down. Eradicate this cancer.
I have never heard of someone expecting people to act a certain way while riding on something that you don't even own. It is about the same as expecting people to abide by your rules while in a rental car. Who the hell cares how Bush expects people to act.
Albatross @ 6
LOL!! Poor Herr Chimperor doesn't realize Specter was talkin' bad about him, and won't, till Darth Cheneymort wakes up and tells him he oughta be pissed....Wonder if he had to wait to pee the whole time the Dickster was under the knife, or do you suppose they had someone else on hand he could ask for permission while Uncle Evil recuperated?
Words words words all we get are words. It's time to step up to the plate Mr. Specter. It's time to hold the criminals accountable. Today!!!!
Specter should watch himself. Knowing Bush and his torture lackey Gonzales they will consider Air Force One to be similar to a naval vessel and will have Specter flogged for his disobedience.
Why is he even on Air Force One?????? Isn't that a conflict of interest??? Sure seems like it, so he HAD to make those comments to the press so no one called him on his conflict of interest. He's still in Bush's back pocket. He just can't let it LOOK like that!!!
I can take one thing away from Specter's comments. I know for a fact, I will never be invited on Air Force One thats for sure because my mouth will be yapping even before we get on the pane.
If he had any honor or integrity, he would say it to GWB directly AND loudly.
Of course, he would then get kicked off the plane, which would hurt his little feelings and probably assure his reelection.-
But of course, being a man was not in his daily talking point memo.
Okay, this is a tad off topic. When NYT refers to Air Force One as the "presidential airplane," is that really correct? I looked it up, and Wikpedia says AFOne consists of several VC-25's which are a heckuva lot more elaborate than an "ariplane."
Just sick of paying through the nose for something this elaborate and excessive so bush can fly from DC to Philly. Of course, he could give a shit about the environment, and wasting our money as if it were water(can't afford to waste that anymore), but you get the idea.
This whole elitist crap needs to get streamlined, and IMHO, all gov't employees need to be reminded that WE the people, are sick of picking up the tab so that these people can live like fucking royalty.
GAO............start thinking from our parsamonious point of view.
Woo hoo, Iraq!
klyde @ 7:
Klyde is obviously somebody who knows something of Specter's history. This is the guy who trashed Anita Hill in the Clarance Thomas hearings. Remember the "over the transom" remark?
Specter has to win elections in a state with a lot of Democrats so he often makes progressive noises, but he in now and always has been a right-wing water carrier - especially when the chips are down. He often appears to align himself with the progressive side of an issue - just to disrupt and diffuse it as much as possible. With friends like him, we don't need enemies.
At some point all Republicans will have to choose between doing what's right for the country or following Bush/Cheney into hell. And --for those GOPPERS making the wrong choice, I say: don't let the door hit you in your sorry ass on your way out!

It's obvious you don't read C&L with any kind of regularity. There are plenty of websites dedicated to the subjects you mentioned (several of which we HAVE covered) so feel free to post your thoughts there.
who'd a thunk it..Specter....he must be worried about his job and his fat pay check with all those nice benefits.....a dose of reality maybe?
Specter and Hagel just like to talk and get on MTP. When push comes to shove they will support Bush.
ozma10 @ 13:
Good point
UnEasyOne
Agreed! Just look at his voting record. We have the same problem in Iowa. Grassley goes around the state and talks reasonably (progressive) and votes the exact opposite. But people have been falling for it for decades!
Oh- Iraq just won this year's Asian soccer championship.
It's all theatrics, Arlen is just following Karl Rove's and Cheney's script. 20 billion military sale to Saudis, 30 billion military AID to Israel, 200 millions spent in Iraq today, 200 millions spent there yesterday, doing every calculation possible this deal even won't get the US even steven and every accountant will tell you that, furthermore, "Bush appointee suppressed global health report" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20016388 . As Lou Dobbs would sum it up - "Incredible". Seems like military equipment and inhumanitarianisms (Darfur, where according to Mrs. Clinton, the US soldiers "don't belong" and what does belong there is US diplomacy led by Dr. Rice that never worked, never will, does nothing, never, you f*****g hypocrites as another hundred thousands get slaughtered by machetes because bullets just ain't worth running worthless African lives crying wolf), so it seems that these are the only US exports left in addition to music and hollywood entertainment. This is so disgusting that it makes you wanna puke! And by the way, if you haven't noticed, dollar is fallin' steady and hard! AND if you think that Microsoft still can count as a prime US exporter, it sells Windows Vista for a buck a copy in China so do the math, agricultural products?, techonology?, Zenith TVs? We're f**ked. Period.
Specter talks tough, but is just another loyal republican toady who refuses to take a stand on principle. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he has some prearranged agreement with the "powers that be" granting him permission to speak his mind, so long as he doesn't press for action. That way, it gives the appearance that at least some republicans actually have a conscious and aren't all suck-ups.
bush isn't worried. It's a "magic" criticism and really doesn't follow the rules of reality.
t-bone @ 2:
Works like a charm.
Situation as I see it.
`Would you shut your (expletive) mouth? Pelosi's not going to help you; you need to do something for yourself, you sniveling ..."
Wow it has been quite a while since this happened. Last senator that did it was Wellstone.
What ever happened to him, something about his family on vacation or something. Oh well I am sure Specter will be fine.
By the way, people should be reminded frequently that the republicans have literally spent millions of dollars on think tanks figuring out how to manipulate and control the message. That's why I don't believe anything any of them say. People in this country better damn well learn to look beyond the rhetoric, and instead look at the behavior. Karl Rove made it clear that his primary agenda is to create a PERMANENT republican majority, and I believe he and his comrades are willing to do ANYTHING to make that a reality, including stealing elections and generally operating outside the law, or at the very least unethically. The republicans have become very sophisticated, very disciplined, and very surreptitious in their methods. Never underestimate them. They have the media on their side. Make no mistake, this is going to be a very tough battle, even with all their failures spanning the past six+ years. Progressives are going to have to be a whole lot smarter and tougher. Republicans don't ever hesitate to go for the jugular. I hate to advocate that Dems stoop to their level, but as others have pointed out you don't show up for a gun fight with a knife.
at exactly what point in time has he or will he, my senator from the keystone state, put his vote where his mouth is. i suspect never. it has been historicaly never and will be never until he runs for re-election and my fellow pa voters dump him like we did santorum. santorum was crazy and spector is chickensh-t. i am tired of him making headlines with his bold statements and rolling over like a lap dog. enough already arlene, grow some courage to go with any convictions you might have.

"Go shop and buy something. Thats your sole purpose in life".
The problem is the Bush administration think that the present presidency is like a free market, open market where the gloves are off and there is minimal government supervision and basically non-existent accountability. That is most certainly the sick, twisted world they live in. Can you blame them? They can. That's the reason why the oil companies won't build the planned oil refinaries that would keep the prices of oil drastically and steadily low for the next decades, what they CAN do is tell the Congresspeople that they can do shit, they cannot pass any legislation forcing them to build them in the name of the American people future financial wellbeing, geez, what they can do is tell the Democratic Congress to f**k off and leave the meeting. And that's what the Bush's people attitudes has been all this time. They were like the guys in the free market with start up funds to jump start the business and realize the fantasies. The problem is, THEIR "infinite" start up money has been managed and preserved for hundreds of years by tens of great US leaders and politicians so this country could be safe and stay that way. It was mismanaged, effectively lost, there is nada, nil, zero, no surplus, no hope, no nothing. There you have it. There's you answer as to why these people will be remembered as evil and why history will have no mercy for any of these free-riding bastards.

Your comment should be required reading.
Anecdote: My wife and I ride the bus. On the ride home last night, we were talking about Gonzales' testimony, Bush not wanting to expand S-CHIP, the public's short attention span (OK, so we're freaks). Anyway, she said, "Look around the bus" (which was full). "Look at how many people are playing with their cell phones." Damn near everyone.
My guess: most don't vote, or care, or even know what's going on. They do, however, have cool cell phones. Until the bill comes.
specters just setting himself up to appear not to be the smarmy ass licking bush lover he is, specter needs lots of asswipe for his lieing mouth , no way this turds anything more then a creep who wants to stay in power kissing repig ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If folks on Air Force One are required to say only complimentary things about Bush, the flights are either going to be totally silent, or guests are going to have to rise to the level of mendacity of a Gonzales.
Speck is like all repugs: Loyal to the end, and his head up his bosses ass.
Sick.

Maybe they were surfing the blogosphere.
Or perhaps they were reporting you to the FBI for sedition. Expect a knock at your door any moment.
Specter seems the perfect example of everything before "but" is BS. Never can bring himself to actually DOING anything about the outrageous, illegal behaviors of Bush amin. Put up or shut up Specter
Specter was on Air Force One because, despite his tough talk, he is one of Bubble Boy's biggest supporters.
Maybe they were surfing the blogosphere.

*That* explains why I dreamed the doorbell was going off all night. : )
Thanks.
just nice to know that there is still a smidgen of integrity left in a few of them. i guess we all have our breaking points. i wonder where is tony Snow's??? for a man who may meet his maker very soon, shouldn't he be getting his house in order as opposed to continuing the lying. tony, come clean and put this crap to bed. you have the power to do it and you will be revered as finally an honest journalist. that would be your legacy. as it is, you don't want to know what your legacy is now.
Old Dood @ 4:
Incorrect position to take. Specter is the worst of the worst on Capitol Hill and
will continue to "try" an make an appearance of being bipartisian in this issue, but
when bush wants/needs him, he will ALWAYS be there to support that W/H turd.
Poor Bush! torn between "personal loyality" to an individual and "loyalty to the consitution." Gosh, I wonder which one better serves WE THE PEOPLE? Real tough choice
Spector had better stop straddling that fence or he is going to wind up with splinters in his ass.
UnEasyOne @ 18:
Yes, you and Kyle are correct and I'm glad to see that some of us have not forgotten
Specter's disgraceful and dishonesty during the Clarence Thomas hearings..and his
never-to-be-forgotten attack on Anita Hill. Spector is scumb of the very lowest kind.
Specter has to win elections in a state with a lot of Democrats so he often makes progressive noises, but he in now and always has been a right-wing water carrier - especially when the chips are down. "Arlen Specter Disses Bush While On Board Air Force One"... and then kisses his ass.
Specter is full of shit. He's Republiscum, has always been Republiscum, and will always be Republiscum.
No matter what he says, he has proven time after time that his allegiance is to his political party, not his country nor its Constitution to which he took an oath to uphold & defend against all ENEMIES, foreign & DOMESTIC.
Cogratulations Specter you've hit the trifecta:
Hypocrite, Liar, & monumental Scumbag.

Specter never goes more than half way of where he should but the media gives him "moderate" treatment
jr @ 54:
Specter, like many Republicans, is afraid leave his party behind.
Many Democrats have changed parties (usually Southerners), but Republicans (except for Jim Jeffords just can't seem to do it.
Looks like POTUS approves of Specter doing what he's doing: Openly attacking the AG and President's legal positions, but doing nothing about it.
What a great ally Specter is for the President, GOP, and AG: All talk, no action.

Doggiebobo @ 51:
I'm glad to see I'm not alone here.
Perhaps Specter - who is investigating an issue that clearly goes into the whitehouse itself - should stay off of airforce one.
Perhaps he was meeting with his 'boss' to report and receive further instructions.
anon @ 64:
perhaps, you are correct, anon!
Mr. Specter's anger is woefully delayed. He's like Rip Van Winkle, only took him seven f*cking years to wake up. I don't trust him to live up to his tough talk.
Yak, yak, yak, Specter. We've heard this tune from you before. Talks big, then it's yes, Mr. President, no Mr. Vice-President, can I give you a big wet sloppy kiss, sir?
Give us all a break Arlen, get offa your posterior and impeach Prezident Asshole and Vee Pee Dick Head.
At least he didnt shit on the rug and blame the democrats. Wouldnt put it past him.
Words are meaningless... follow their actions, follow the money. Spectre is still a loyalist, but needs some credible cover to appease the masses.
Specter has been a high-level Washington official for a very long time. He is the insider's insider. He is the lawmaker's lawmaker. He has a sharp mind and a steely discipline. No Washingtonian is better connected. So there is no question about whether he knew what he was doing, was aware of all its consequences, and acted deliberately Specter, here, is openly and purposefully thumbing his nose at the administration. Specter, as part of the Warren Commission, played a key role in the ascent of the current ruling cabal. One wonders whether Specter is having second thoughts. Perhaps he will be instrumental in dismantling the monster he helped create. Or perhaps this is Specter delivering the "black spot."
SPector and Bus hhave one ,of many, things in common. MSM gives them overblown credit for saying something even though they never actually produce more than statements. or to use a favorite bush statement.."in other words"....all the sizzle withouyt the stake. Kieth O had a better one..."all hat and no cattle."
