Actor Stephen Baldwin, the youngest member of the famous Baldwin brothers, is no longer playing Pauly Shore's sidekick in comedy masterpieces like Biodome. He has a much more serious calling these days.
Baldwin became a right-wing, born-again Christian after the 9/11 attacks, and now is the star of Operation Straight Up (OSU), an evangelical entertainment troupe that actively proselytizes among active-duty members of the US military. As an official arm of the Defense Department's America Supports You program, OSU plans to mail copies of the controversial apocalyptic video game, Left Behind: Eternal Forces to soldiers serving in Iraq. OSU is also scheduled to embark on a "Military Crusade in Iraq" in the near future.
But behind OSU's anodyne promises of wholesome fun for military families, the organization promotes an apocalyptic brand of evangelical Christianity to active duty US soldiers serving in Muslim-dominated regions of the Middle East. Displayed prominently on the "What We Believe" section of OSU's website is a passage from the Book of Revelations (Revelation 19:20; 20:10-15) that has become the bedrock of the Christian right's End Times theology: "The devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, and whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life, shall be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
With the endorsement of the Defense Department, OSU is mailing "Freedom Packages" to soldiers serving in Iraq. These are not your grandfather's care packages, however. Besides pairs of white socks and boxes of baby wipes (included at the apparent suggestion of Iran-Contra felon Oliver North, according to OSU) OSU's care packages contain the controversial Left Behind: Eternal Forces video game. The game is inspired by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins' bestselling pulp fiction series about a blood-soaked Battle of Armageddon pitting born-again Christians against anybody who does not adhere to their particular theology. In LaHaye's and Jenkins' books, the non-believers are ultimately condemned to "everlasting punishment" while the evangelicals are "raptured" up to heaven. Read more...

The "Left Behind" theology of the "rapture" isn't even accepted by most evangelical Christians, those who could be described as "born again." The whole rapture controversy has even split churches and denominations, so what this group Baldwin is involved with is peddling isn't even mainstream evangelicalism. Most evangelicals who read the Left Behind books admit they do so for the sci-fi aspects of the plot, not as a "religious" work. Like the equally silly DaVinci Code, the Left Behind books apparently make good "page turners" for beach reading.

Since the Defense Department [which should more accurately be renamed what it was originally called, which was the War Department] is allowing this evangelical organization to mail to soldiers in Iraq copies of its video game, then anti-war groups and veterans groups such as Veterans for Peace should be allowed to mail to military personnel copies of the documentary Sir! No Sir!. But one suspects that the last thing the military wishes its personnel to see is the story of how the GI Resistance helped to bring an end to another imperial war fought by the United States, which was in Vietnam. The military brass is probably also aware that the best way to bring a war to a halt is to have it happen from within.

Even on liberal sites, the myth of Bob Hope continues to persist. Bob Hope, despite what the mainstream media wants you to believe, was not exactly one of the big favorites of the soldiers in Vietnam. On the contrary, he and his USO tour were generally loathed and reviled by the average GI in Vietnam because the soldiers knew that Hope was trying to sell them the propaganda that was handed down by the government. The soldiers who fought there and knew what was going on [ as David Cline said in the documentary Sir! No Sir! "I realized that I was lied to and that my silence kept the {war machine} going"] were not buying the feel good entertainment that Hope was trying to peddle.
Instead, military personnel in Vietnam flocked to see Jane Fonda and the FTA Tour that she and others were a part of. The military was terrified of Ms. Fonda and what she had to say and banned her from performing in Vietnam. So the FTA Tour [which technically stood for Fun, Travel and Adventure or Free the Army but among the GIs was known as Fuck the Army] went to Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines to perform for the troops. The FTA performed in front of standing room only crowds of soldiers overseas and where over 60,000 of them saw the FTA perform which, unlike the hawkish Bob Hope, was sympathetic to the GIs point of view, which, of course, was anti-war. But it should be clearly understood that Bob Hope was much less a friend to the soldier in Vietnam than he was a pimp to the U.S. government.
Some of these hollywood retards just can't handle the pressures of a constantly fake society. Any little turmoil in their self-important lives and they latch onto anything simplistic that resembles truth to give themselves a little meaning.

i listened to max blumenthal interviewed on the rachel maddow show last night. he was asked how these OSU/USO shows work evangelizing into their combo celebrity-studded (baldwin, holyfield etc) strongman-flying wallenda-circus acts they perform for the troops. blumenthal said he didn't know. i do.
these modern tent revivals come straight from the Campus Crusade for Christ model. (Christian Embassy is a direct descendant of CCC) when i was in high school in texas i was subjected to their strong arm tactics. in the football off-season we had a big hole in our friday morning schedules where the football pep rallies usually went (it was texas after all). one friday, in their stead, we were offered the chance to attend a fundraiser for some school club or another. students either paid fifty cents or brought a canned good for charity or attended detention hall. most of us shuffled into the gym and paid our fifty cents.
we were entertained by an elvis impersonator, a strongman who lifted things and challenged boys to a jalapeno eating contest and a sax player. after the entertainment, the emcee invited us all back that night for a free pizza party. AND we were allowed to bring friends from other schools (a big plus for us).
that night we were all back and hungry. we all went through the lines and loaded up our one or two skimpy slices from the local pizza hut and went into the bleachers to scarf down the pizza. i remember being just about to take my first bite when the emcee appeared again and announced "i just want to give y'all a chance to leave now if you want to because in five minutes we're going to start talking about the love of our lord and savior jesus christ so if you want to leave you better do it now because once we start the doors will be locked and nobody leaves."
i wasn't going nowhere. i wasn't thrilled (and neither were my heathen catholic friends - lord knows whether there were any other religious "minorities") but we weren't about to show disrespect to the pizza givers or stand up in the face of the peer pressure of the fundamentalist majority.

Out of morbid curiosity, I actually bought (used, no royalties there) a copy of the 'Left Behind' novel and read it. Frankly, it's completely hokey and - if you're actually a breathing, sentient human being with some semblence of a mind of your own - there's nothing in it even remotely capable of 'converting' anyone. Dan Brown's equally turgid and badly written Da Vinci Code is more convincing - and has done. To fear the Left Behind books is insulting to my intelligence, and to the intelligence of the poor soldiers stuck in a godforsaken (pun intended) shithole with limited library services.
But it's hell of a good laugh, probably in all the places the authors never intended to put a chuckle. As for the Eternal Forces video game, these soldiers have seen so much of the real thing I rather doubt that if they do indulge in a bit of cathartic orgy of video blood and guts (with the added bonus of not having a conscience scarred with actually causing any real death and suffering), have at it.
I've just played a couple hours of Shrek 2 on Playstation with a 7-year-old, and that's as violent and warped in its own way - the ogre smashing anything that gets in its way, including defenseless snails so he can eat their eyeballs. Am I worried that she's going to become a born-again serial killer? Hardly. I'm just pissed that I'm subsidising frickin Disney...

If you combined the brain power of this doofus with that of The Decider, a flea's fart would be more powerful. Anyone who advertises their "faith" on their clothing, talks about it constantly, and seems to have no other purpose in life: anyone who does these things is to be pitied, avoided, and not trusted. Presidential debates during the 04 election cycle. I must confess
his comments were nauseating, to say the least. Pure and simple.
Since then, I have made it a point of never watching any of his
movies, regardless of when they were produced. He is entitled to
his opinion, and I in turn am entitled to never watch his movies
period. It must be nice to have enough money to indulge ones
self in such folly. Again, vote with the remote. Let his drooling

It's funny that they would give out the Left Behind game. I actually played this game, and boy does it suck. Even if we forgive the game's crippling bugs, and its built-in spyware, it is pretty much still just a really bad game with an even worse user interface. And the built-in bible lessons are so corny and creepy, I almost feel sorry for the developers who had to code them in.
I say they go ahead and give the game away, and I encourage the soldiers to try to run it on their computers. The last thing this game will do is land some converts, or make their movement seem "hip" with the youngsters.

When I first read about this over at Orcinus I was amused to say the least, when we deploy out to Iraq we take along our x-boxes, PlayStation and laptops for our own entertainment. The game that I hear the most about is 'World of War-craft', and then various x-box games after that. The reviews Of the left behind game on Game-spot and other places point to the fact that the main thing you are doing in the game is trying to convert others (killing was hardly mentioned), but converting characters and keeping them converted is next to impossible because the game was not thought out well, add to that the fact that the game apparently comes with built in spy-ware (not a surprise when you think about it). I'm really not concerned that these people will gain a foothold in the military, we are a bunch of godless heathens and proud of it, their tactics are sadly ineffective. I'm reminded of my first ever trip to the Grand Canyon last year put on by the post Chaplain, our canyon guide tried to convince us that the canyon was carved in about a week from catastrophic runoff water left over by Noah's flood (creationist rhetoric). Unfortunately whenever he would ask for questions after his little sermons all he would get were practical questions like, how much further we were going to hike into the canyon, where were we, where were we going, how long would it take to get back out from there, etc (we marched 4 miles down, 4miles across and then 4 miles up that day, ouch).

Except they were sanctioned by the church at the time and were the representatives of Christianity, fake, funny. The cloak of righteousness is used by pretty much all religions as an excuse for the things they want to do to others, Christians aren't the only ones guilty of this, they just seem to be the most well known (always dangerous to assume you and you alone know what God is thinking).
