Another Giuliani flip-flop

For all his many, many flaws, at least Rudy Giuliani has always supported civil unions for gay couples, right? Wrong.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to discard the moderate and liberal positions of his past. The latest is civil unions for same-sex couples, which the Republican presidential candidate has been backing away from in recent months.

A campaign aide told the Globe this weekend that Giuliani favors a much more modest set of rights for gay partners than civil union laws in effect in four states offer. [...]

"It's really disappointing he's stepped back from his position on civil unions," said Joe Tarver, spokesman for the Empire State Pride Alliance, a group that advocates for gay rights in New York state that worked with and against Giuliani on a number of issues during his eight years as mayor.

Calling the former mayor's shifting stance "pretty un-Giuliani-like," Tarver said: "It's quite obvious he's playing to the people whose votes he needs to get the Republican nomination."

The man is shameless. Strategically, it doesn't even make sense -- the far-right will see it as pandering, and what's left of the GOP center will be offended by the shift to the right.

AmeriKKKa's Mayor.

And, in my best NY accent....foist!

Keep pandering to those redneck ultra-conservative, Bible-thumpin' moralists. It killed McCain's chances...and now you're next, Rudy.

When Republicans change their opinions to agree with fundies, it's not a flip-flop, it's an epiphany.

Rudi has been born again, praise the lord and hate teh gay.

When Republicans agree with fundies, it's not a flip-flop, it's an epiphany.

God has spoken through Rudi, he's born again, and now hates teh gay.

I'd like to find a comprehensive guide to all of Rudy's missteps...

b-b-but he's "america's mayor"!!!

can't we just overlook the fact that he is a flip flopper, an opportunist, an exaggerator, an adulterer, a war monger and a 911 profiteer?!?

i tell ya, the GOP prez candiates might be some of the most horrific skin bags i have seen in a long time. if i were to answer my door and see mitt romney and son-clones i would seriously freak the shit out. AHHHHHH!!!

the boys from brazil, indeed!

Excuse me-- Rudi ;)

Shameless is a mild word for what Gulianni is. Craven is more like it.

I trust Rudy just about as much as I trust Bob Murray. Both ass covering opportunists.

"Family values" and all that was just the cover story for stolen elections. If Guliani tries to win an honest election using the cover story of 2 stolen elections as his guiding principle, he's going to get smoked.

Yes but John Kerry is a flip flopper because he voted against a bill and then voted for it after it was changed in committee!! Damn you, flip flopping John Kerry!!

Repugnants can do anything - cuz they're members of the Klub.

Draft-dodging, infidelity, drugs, homosexuality, lie, etc.

So far the only no-no is pedophilia.

So far.

At this rate, Rudy might be better off establishing his own flip flop company and selling them. He's got several pairs already.

This is nothing compared to Cheney's flip-flop on Iraq since 1994. Check it out, it's incredible:

So which is worse:
• He was telling the truth THEN and NOW he's lying
• He was lying THEN and NOW is showing his true feelings.

In an effort to pander to the bigoted GOP base Rudy would put the match to the cross fire if he had too.

How can Rudy stand up to the terrorist if he can't even stand up to the hate mongering Christofascits within his own party?

Rudy, America's Mayor that re-invents himself everyday.

TALK ABOUT PANDERING! IS THAT HIS FRONT, MIDDLE, OR BACK NAME?

With the stunning lack of leadership ability this crew exhibits, you really start to think they've put the fix in already for the 2008 elections. They aren't even trying to put forward "good" candidates, because they've already stolen the election? Scary.

Man he's really getting desperate. I guess all the chest-beating and "bloody hell", 9/11 America's Mayor posturing has finally worn out its welcome, so now he's going red-neck. And c'mon, even the dumbest of trailer park hillbillys aren't stupid enough to fall for some New Yorker's desperate pandering.

He'll be forgotten soon....

Crass opportunistic fuck... That's the short story... Perfect for the republicans... As far as they are concerned, he's got all the right values as has been already outlined here, it would seem.... I sure as fuck hope we all ain't stupid enough to buy this shit again and see this one elected.. That would pretty much be the final nail in the coffin for America..............JD

Better Guilliani in a flip-flop than a thong.

But then I always have a thong in my heart.

I Guilliani tried to pamper people anymore, methinks he should be introduced to David Vitter.

New Guiliani quote making the rounds:

"Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do and how you do it."

Is this a man anyone should want to be President of the U.S.?

He was lying then and he's lying now?

I would say that with Guiliani as the front runner for the Republicans the Democrats are a shoe in to win the Presidency and increase their congressional majority but the front runner for the Democrats is Hillary Clinton.

whoa. wow. woof.

the sad thing is that i can envision a lot of bush supporters nodding their heads in agreement.

This flip-flopper has to live up to his name. Rudy Guiliphony. He's completly unabashed about flaunting his phonyness.

I remember when way back in 1999 G-Dub was raising a gazillion dollars and was the GOP frontrunner. I started reading about him, just out of curiousity.

Everything I read described a draft dodger, intellectual light-weight, with multiple business failures, shady business deals and suspicions of cocaine use.

His record as Governor of Texas was atrocious. Texas was next to last in everything but executions, in which they led the nation.

He really didn't have any coherent plan or policy ideas, he just spoke in generalities about "compassionate conservatism" and "restoring integrity" to the White House.

Even his status as a "legacy" was dubious, considering that his father went from most popular ever to losing his reelection 2 years later.

I kept waiting for people to catch on to the fact that the clothes had no emperor. They have finally, half-way through his second term.

So don't expect that Ghouliani's obvious flaws, or the flaws of any GOP candidate, will prevent him from winning the nomination and possibly the White House. Especially with a pack of press poodles that ignores major GOP flaws and focuses on Democratic haircuts and cleavage.

I wouldn't be surprised if he came out in support of making cross-dressing illegal.

all of bush's past failings, crimes and shameful activities were swept under the rug (no, not the one laura picked out, yeesh, we get it dubya. laura picked out the effin rug, ok! i digress...) with one simple answer to a complex question:

"Who"s had the most influence on your life?"

Bush: "Christ, because he changed my heart. When you turn your heart and your life over to Christ, when you accept Christ as the savior, it changes your heart. It changes your life. And that's what happened to me."

and *BAM* a huge swath of amurrica turned off their idling brains, picked up the pork rinds and said "yup, i likes him, put on 'the wheel" *munch, munch, munch*

Strategically, it doesn’t even make sense — the far-right will see it as pandering

You call it pandering -- they see it as Rudy getting on his knees and begging for their support. Same with Romney's flip-flop on abortion. For the far right, it's about respect, not ideals.

I wouldn't mind people having to hide their crosses under their shirts.

It's where I have to wear my pentagram.

Praise Bob! (not Murray).

"Sorry that I lied, took bribes, sent your kids to die for no reason, did sexually perverted things with a male prostitute, and gave your kids crystal meth.

But God and my wife have forgiven me, so I am ready to go back to do the work you elected me to do that I wasn't doing up until now, but God forgave me for that too, so it's okay."

That only works for one of theirs, with Democrats it's "Never forgiven, never forgotten, even if it wasn't true."

LOL! Like a three-time divorced part-time drag queen whose own kids hate him and won't campaign for him, has a right to keep babbling on about gay marriage or civil unions! He's made a mockery of marriage and family in his own life and should just shut the fuck up!

" the far-right will see it as pandering," at what point in time did the far right actually start looking that closely at the candidates. they hear a few keywords that make their ears stand up and their droll starts to flow and that is all. if they actually looked at candidates and their past records and performances, whould we have king george in office today? after 6+ years it seems they might actually be considering the possibility that he is not all that great for their party.
all rudy has to do is say the dems are weak in the war on islamo fascist, i was the man on 9/11, fear hillary, fear terror. and he is in.

Rudi's wives and ex-wives say some of their favorite memories are all of them getting together with Rudi, with Rudi in drag and playing sex games, including 'Same-Sex Marriage'.

That's family values.

"The man is shameless. Strategically, it doesn’t even make sense — the far-right will see it as pandering, and what’s left of the GOP center will be offended by the shift to the right."

What strange statement. The GOP center has never been offended by a shift to the right. Nor has the DLC ever been offended by a shift to the right on the part of prominent Democrats. Mainstream, Midwestern Democrats like Murtha, Feingold and Kucinich are now regarded as the lunatic fringe by their own party. Where are we going people?

Joementum:

Just to be clear, by respect, you mean sucking up to and towing the religiofacsist party line at all times in all things...That is the definition of respect among that crowd... yes? Jus wonderin...JD

Both Rudy and Mitt are in a desperate race to prove that they are as dumb and
opportunistic as any politician could be in pursuit of the presidency.

And John Kerry was skewered for "flip/flops"?

These 2 guys are pathetic.

Unfortunately, Romney could easily get elected.

I would be glad Giuliani was pulling this if I knew the Dems would use it against him in the general elections (assuming he won the primary) and it thereby reduced his chances of winning.

The thing about Repugs is, even if they personally deep down inside support something like civil unions for gays, and even if they were to say as much to get elected, they are forced to kow-tow to their base once reaching office; we've seen it over and over again.

My fear is that if Giuliani makes it past the primaries, Giuliani will again promise support for civil unions and the Dems will let his previous statements go uncommented on. People would then elect him for being a "compassionate conservative", and then we'd end up with the same crap we ended up with with Bush.

Yet, another soul sold to the devil.

That's the only way to put it. I'm for it, now I'm against it. Didn't the republicans call that flip-flopping?
My, how they forget.

I was for abortion, now I'm against it.
(crowd swells) flip-flop, flip-flop.......
I was for gay civil unions, now I'm against it.
(same crowd) flip-flop, flip-flop.........
I was for incest, now I'm against it.
(crowd goes silent, except for the delegation from Alabama, they groan)

Do they think that we won't remember what they said. Are they morons? Well.........

People WE must hold their feet to the fire, because the media won't.
Yes, there a few semi-journalists who will bring this matter to the floor. But they are watched only by the elitist of America.
The well educated liberals.

Now, get out there and spread the news.
Republicans are the new flip-flopers, and they are really good at it.

All Rudolph needs are plenty of cash donations. So he can " Catapult the propaganda".

He simply needs to say a lie, loud enough and often enough and he will have the religious right.

Rudy can be saved smack on TV during a campaign stop........Because Pat Robertson says God told him it would happen.....................
