Log Cabin Republicans Attack Mitt Romney In New Ad
By Logan Murphy Thursday Oct 04, 2007 5:02pm

This is just too funny. The Log Cabin Republicans, a gay GOP group, is running a new ad in Iowa that seeks to undercut Mitt Romney's standing with social conservatives by praising his past record of doing battle with conservatives on social issues when he was governor of liberal Massachusetts.
The ad pretends to be praising Romney by highlighting Romney's record fighting on behalf of liberal issue positions against conservatives -- whose support, of course, he needs right now as he seeks to win Iowa and other states in the GOP Primary. To do this it uses quotes from his past ads and clips of him declaring his social liberalism during debates when he ran for Senate against Ted Kennedy in 1994. Read more...
Here's Patrick Sammon of the Log Cabin Republicans on MSNBC talking about their attack on Mitt's Massachusetts Politics.

Poor Mitt just can't catch a break. This will do little to endear him to the hardcore, far-right evangelical base of his party, who are threatening to run a third party candidate if he, Rudy Giuliani or Freddy Hollywood win the Republican nomination.

Log Cabin Republicans huh?
No doubt of this variety

The GOP is going the way of the whig party.

Go away already Mitt
and what the hell kind of name is Mitt anyhow
I would love to see this kind of ad praising Rudy Giuliani for his support of transvestites
I bet MoveOn.org would pay to have this aired on the networks. :D
Bitches.
hee hee.
Makes you yearn for the days when people voted, someone won, then people forgot about politics for 3 and a half years.
Wow, who'd of thought Romney was more liberal than Hillary.
Oooooh look out! Here come the toothless puppies!
Headline:
Romney Gummed to Pieces by Adorable Gay Puppies.
Gay Republicans are so amusing!
props to LCR for hurting Mitt's street cred with the Flintstones
c. atrox @ 11:
Yep. Kinda like Jewish Nazis or Black Klansmen.
Oy.
There's a first-rate Doonesbury on this theme.
Be sure to click the next button above the cartoon to see the next several in that series.
I've interacted with gay republicans.
An interesting group. Really interesting.
They subscribe to republican philosophy.
But, at heart, they want power.
All for practical reasons.
BTW, Washington, D.C., is all about sex. Power is simply in service of sex.
Mitt is not alone. The past week provided yet more examples of God bites man in the Republican presidential primaries. As John McCain, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani perform backflips to appease their party's conservative Christian base, their faith-based contortions just continue to backfire.
For the details, see:
"God Bites Man in GOP White House Race."
Gotta love it when they start feeding on their own. But Republican presidential candidates are almost irrelevant. Big business has purchased its candidate and Romney and the others are just there to make her look centrist.
Looks like the C+L bumper to bumper stop and go weekend traffic jam has started.
Not a bad situation actually.
Oh that was VERY enjoyable ... and so damn confusing. Are the gay Republicans complaining that Mitt has Massachusetts values? What is their agenda? Any of their candidates will throw them under the bus, so what's the diff?
Good! Considering how Romney pandered to Boston's gay community to get their votes while he was running for the Senate and Governors office, I'm glad their smacking the prick in the face with his own words! Romney's the biggest doushebag running...even worse than Sam Brownback, who at least has been a consistent doushebag!
Funny that a group of gay Republicans don't mention Mitt's support of gay equality while governor of that librul hellhole Taxachusetts. The Log Cabin is a group of brain-dead, self-hating delusionists working for a political party that will hang them out to dry any chance they get, kind of like Blacks For Reagan or Jews For Hitler or Hispanics For Tancredo. What a bunch of fucking pussies. As a self-respecting gay man I cringe at the thought of even being in the same room with any of them.
I love watching a train wreck as long as no one gets hurt.
Cool, Crooks and Liars got top billing at BuzzFlash this afternoon. :-P
Dom @ 21:
Amen my gay brother. The most ineffectual and inexplicable political group ever created.
Also something else from BuzzFlash. "Lynne Cheney will make her first appearance as a guest on the Emmy(R) and Peabody(R) Award-winning "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on Wednesday, October 10 at 11:00 p.m. (ET/PT). Cheney is promoting her new tome "Blue Skies, No Fences: A Memoir of Childhood and Family" which hits stores on Tuesday, October 9."
This ought to be good. I'll pop the popcorn you guys bring the adult beverages.
wow...love it.
Tim @ 24:
Some gays, who are comfortable in their environment, feel OK about Log Cabin repubs.
Just an observation.
Tim @ 24:
Speaking of Log Cabin Republicans, I once sent a bunch of these postcards out to their leadership asking them why the hell they call themselves Republicans anyway!
http://www.cafepress.com/bettybowers.22944964
VietVet8666 @ 27:
I don't understand the observation. What does being comfortable in one's environment have to do with feeling ok about Log Cabins?
I have a friend who is a Log Cabin and I think he is a great guy, but misguided in his politics and I gladly tell him so whenever the subject comes up. He is a closeted military guy and it breaks my heart to see his mind twist in pretzels to maintain the ideology he grew up with.
There may be a day when gays can join a conservative party in our country. Unfortunately, while we are still fighting for some basic rights, now is not that time.
Mitt's real name is Willard, as in big game varmint hunter.
Fools on the Hill @ 30:
Wasn't Willard a rat?
Who's log? In which cabin?
I love it when he says "Well, he's flip-flopped around so much on that one, he could come out in favor of them!" in which he is referring to his own civil rights! There is an uncanny parallel to Coultergiest's comment that women shouldn't have the right to vote.
When will the self loathing gay democrats get real and recognize that so long as they drink the Democratic Party kool aid they will get sold down the river every time. They can't pass ENDA despite having the full control of Congress? Clinton gave us Don't Ask Don't Tell and Defense of Marriage. Meanwhile Gov. Schwarzenegger has signed 19 bills for gay rights. And of course he did that because of Democrats, right? These [deleted] dems are the masochists who keep telling us all to vote dem and they will take care of us. Polling in the GOP shows that nearly 50% of Repubs support gay rights now because of Log Cabin. And Repubs provided the margin of votes to keep the gay marriage issues off the ballot in MA. San Diego Republican Mayor signed the marriage support resolution after the Dem on the council first killed it. (And a Republican provided the fifth vote to pass it) . So will the Dem [deleted] finally just put up or shut up. Where's ENDA? You have GOP votes and co-sponsors and you still can't get enough Democrats (our saviours!) to pass it? You keep selling us bullshit and calling it caviar and too many people are eating it.
[tone it down, please. sitemonitor]
THE TRUE MEANING OF MITT’S MORMONISM: MARRIED TO MULTIPLE POSITIONS
Raging moderate @ 34:
Are the Log Cabin Republicans opposed to their own lifestyle?
Noron kept trying her best to trip Patrick up and get him to say something, but he was just a bit smarter than Noron.
This is hilarious and deviously clever. The Dems should pay the Log Cabin Republicans a license fee and use this commercial against Romney with zero changes!
Opposed to our lifestyle? what kind of nonsense is that? Don't confuse the whack jobs who have hijacked our party with its rank and file. This is about getting the leaders on the national level to get with it. There are cases of Republican elected officials in state and local office all over the country helping gays get their rights. And if you want to get rights, you work to change the minds of those who are opposed to you. Your strategy is to make us completely beholden to the Democrats who will then someday save us. And we can see how well that is working for African Americans. Frankly, you sound like the Religious Right fools. The Repubs told them if we can just control Congress... If we can control Congress and the White House... If we can control Congress, the WH and the Supreme Court THEN all your dreams will come true. They couldn't pass the Marriage Amendement (because of the Repubs against it) and we still have abortion. So they got squat and screwed in the process and are now just waking up to it. we'll give them gifts that say "I controlled the GOP and all I got was this lousy T-shirt." Now you want us to follow that strategy with the Dems. You're a Genius! Frankly, I'd rather keep working to get GOP support so that eventually the Parties will fight for our votes(and are doing so already in some places) and not take us for granted and pander to us with a debate that accomplished nothing but more rhetoric which will be as forgotten by them as promises made to the fundies by the GOP.
P.S. Log Cabin folks are treated a heck of a lot better for being gay at a GOP event than we're ever treated by the LGBTIQ ...INGO community for being Republican. Your motto ought to be "We believe in tolerance and diversity so long as you believe only the things we believe in exactly the same way we do. "
Raging moderate @ 40:
Sorry, you may say the republican leadership was hijacked, but your party reeks of intolerance and the anti-gay agenda promulgated by Bush, Rove and Co. is repugnant, and I'm a straight guy. Condoleeza owns a house with another woman but stands idly by while self-loathing closet queen Rove trots out his favorite wedge issue. Larry Craig, McCain's Florida chair, etc. Clean up your own party before you start lecturing others.
jwf @ 37:
Someone once called the Log Cabin Club "chickens for Colonel Sanders."
My point exactly. Once the Democrats are perfect in their support for Gay rights and stop just pandering and giving lip service then they have the right to attack Republicans. Republicans aren't perfect, but the point is we are working with them to have them be more supportive. To attack us for doing so when the Dems still need to do lots more to clean up their act is simply the old diversionary tactic to make gays not ask them hard questions. Interesting how Gay Repubs were being lectured, but that was ok. But once you start to say the emperor is wearing no clothes himself it's suddenly tsk tsk why are you lecturing us?
Also, when was the last time you were at a GOP event? I'm at these events all the time and all I hear is how supportive individuals are and how can they help us. We don't lack for support in the GOP, we lack for leadership. Log Cabin is doing that. How about a little support? Or is Dem control the real goal and not gay rights? Those who support true rights for all LGBT folks support Log Cabin. Those who want us to be sold out to the Dems attack us.
RickinSF @ 42:
Yes, no doubt someone who didn't know what they were talking about. I suppose the Democrats just sprung from the loins of Democracy immediately in support of gays and lesbians? Especially those in the South. And Fred Phelps, the minister who pickets funerals of gay people? He's a Democrat. And I suppose if you went down to the nearest construction union hall someplace and declared you were gay that you'd be welcomed with open arms. Or how about those Black churches that have been so warm and fuzzy to gay people? Being clever with these analogies is easier than actually having to think.
Raging moderate @ 44:
Wow!!! Get help my gay brother. Seriously.
L.A. Confidential @ 1:
Exactly. The gays who would sell their souls to the devil...ie the GOP...for a fucking tax break while the Republican base kicks them in the teeth and strips away gay Americans of their basic rights. The Log Cabin Republicans are like the jews that sold their people out to the Nazis.
can we say HYPOCRASY
"for years he's fought conservatives and relious extermists"
you mean those same religious extermists and religious right that want to place and keep you as second class citizens, that feel you are morally corrupt, that want to keep you from legal getting married. . .etc. etc. etc.
It's offical and out in the open, the Log Cabin Republicans are seriously self haters and need alot of mental help.
Raging Moderate, if you're going to do nothing but post anti-Democratic screeds, then I'd suggest you just shut your pie-inhaler and let the rest of us hold a civil discussion. You were told to tone it down once already, now do as you were told by the site monitor.
Raging moderate @ 44:
I would rather chew glass than attend any GOP function.
Liberal AND Proud @ 32:
Not theirs, and not in mine thats for sure.
You can't sell your soul to the devil and get between my sheets.
Damian @ 49:
That's funny. So, if you're making anti-Republican screeds, that's allowed and and is considered a civil discussion? I am simply providing another point of view. I must be making sense because you want me to stop. ; ) My apologies to any who felt this was more than simply trying to respond in kind.
And clytemnestra? I'm sorry if you don't get the point of the ad. It's to show that Mitt's a hypocrite for saying one thing in MA and another in Iowa.
And jwf, while I can appreciate you'd rather chew glass, it takes more courage to go face to face with those folks on their own turf than it does to sling verbal stones at them from a blog. I would hope you'd appreciate that we're willing to tackle them in their den and make them confront gay people than to listen to their own echo chamber unchallenged. (Sort of like asking someone with the gay GOP point of view to leave rather than take the chance someone might start agreeing with me.)
I'm poking a stick into your den a bit, I confess but my honest goal is to challenge the prevailing assumption and make people realize there is another side to all of this. Thanks for listening.
jwf @ 37:
Log Cabin Republicans are like someone stuck in a pathetic go-nowhere relationship. Everyone around you can see the relationship is going nowhere but you keep saying, "I can change him/her. If I just stick with it a little while longer, I can change them".
These log cabin Repugs are conflicted in many more ways than one. I don't think they know what they stand for...or against.
Truthseeker @ 52:
That's the best analogy I have heard.
I would like to add the spouse who sits in the counseling session with two black eyes and a broken nose saying "we can work it out, I just know we can work it out.".
What the fuck is a Log Cabin Republican, anyway? If, let's imagine, Larry Craig wants to tack on the "Craig-DeWine Kill The Queers Amendment" to the next big defense appropriations bill, are they going to support the Republicans because of their dire fear of creeping socialism? Give. Me. A. Break.
Otay @ 53:
tax breaks for the rich.
Pure troll-speak.
Get out.
Gay Republicans?? (I mean other than hypocritical closeted House members.)
Guys what's up? You're willing to sell your soul, and "your people" for money?
Money is the cause of all of America's problems; greed, envy, avarice.
Yeah ..
Hey guys... You hear the AWESOME NEWZ!!??!!
Fred Phelps is giving the Commencement prayers at the Democratic National Convention!!
How awesome will it be to finally be able to disrobe our real intentions before the world when we sit at the right hand of GOD and do his work by ridding the world of the foulness known as faggotry!
Rejoice!!
:/ *s
Hey... I was being sarcastic.. ooo do bad words flag for moderation?
Best ad in a long time.
Should be all over tv.
fiver @ 31:
Nope Ben was the big rat. Willard was the guy who governed the rats.
I don't know about anyone else. Does that Massachusetts values condemnation work for you.
What of those Idaho larry Craig values?
Those Tom Delay Texas values?
How about those Kenneth Lay (Enron) values from what ever state he is from?
Whats wrong with Kansas Values?
Ah, those Florida Mark Foley values?
Hey how about those Colorado Ted Haggard values?
Who does this negative state mularky work on?
Like there is a state that is just ivory whitie snow pure and innocent. This is America, states are all renowned for some devalued award. But it is in the eye of the perspective.
Take the unrelenting evil califonia (liberal) hollywood. Verses the relaxing adult ease of legal prostetution and gambling of what happens in the mob town of Vegas stays in Vegas.
Great, Rethugs are now starting to eat their own, (no pun intended)
I was wondering when someone would start to compare and contrast Romney's views running for president against his views when he was governor.
However, I thought the Dems would have to do the job if he got the nomination.
It's great to see the Republican Party do the Dems work for them. Only problem is he'll never get the nomination. The man has absolutely no substance.
The Republican Party is literally a homophobic, racist, misogynist, AIDSphobic, Christian-supremacist hate-group. The GOP and the KKK share the same values and agenda.
"Raging moderate" may be raging, but he is hardly moderate. He is a right-wing extremist who takes out his self-hatred by promoting discrimination and violence against other queers. There is no possible way to support the GOP without promoting said discrimination and violence.
Every Republican is personally responsible every time:
- someone is fired from their job for being lgbt
- someone is denied housing based on sexual orientation or gender identity
- someone is beaten or even killed by bashers
MItt Romney did change from civil pro choice ( He has always been pro life personally) to pro life, and he has the record to back it up. The video is deceptive for this reason. It says "his record". Lets look at "his record" and then everyone else one this site will have the burden of proof to prove something different.
1.As governor he vetoed legislation that would allow the morning after pill. (preventing abortion in its earliest and purest form)
2.He vetoed legislation that would have redefined the defination of life. this prevented killing life from fertilization to implimintation.
3.He supported parental notification laws and fought against efforts to weaken parental notification,..thus preventing more abortions.
4. He supported adult stem cell research, but opposed embryonic stem cell research. )It was this experience in which he discovered that the civil pro choice stance was horribly wrong)
5.He did not support public funding for embryo destructive stem cell research.
6. He was forthright and honest with his state so he told the citizens he would uphold his promise to them, but he no longer believed in govermental pro choice but pro- life. This are the facts of his political office. now please respond. What facts do you have of his political office that show differently. I am interested if you have facts.
Double Irony:
1. Gay republicans
2. This ad
Are Log Cabin Republicans like Bathroom Stall Republicans?
The point to all of this and Log cabin is that you had to work to make the Democrat Party supportive of rights for the LGBT community. That didn't happen overnight. The Republicans are slower at getting there, but they are getting there. There is evidence in nearly every state of some Republicans working to support equality. So you'd rather just ignore them completely, including those who are fighting for us? We wouldn't have half the rights we do in this country if not for the support of Republicans here and there. Are the majority with us yet. Certainly not, but polling shows that 76% support ENDA type protections including 67% of social conservatives. Remember, younger people, both dems and Reps are much higher in support. You'll find more young Republicans in favor of our rights than older Dems. It is a demographic thing, like it was for civil rights. and you won't win them over by shrieking names at them. The Chair of the Young Republicans once asked me, what can we do to get the old people in our party over their anti-gay thing? And a young WY Rep. legislator single handedly convinced the legislator to not pass a marriage amendment because he said his generation is over this whole thing and will wonder someday what the fuss was about. These are the people who will run the Party someday. But you would rather we kick them in the face or just ignore them.
You can either welcome that change or keep driving away potential supporters. When the right wing bashes gays, straight folks who know someone gay or lesbian says, that can't be true because I know (friend, son, coworker) isn't like that. So the same is true when you make mindless broad sweeping statements about all Republicans. Remember, if every Democrat was fully supportive, ENDA would already be passed by now. But they can't because not all Dems are gay friendly just as all Repubs aren't anti-gay. The right wing is talking about supporting a third party candidate because the current candidates aren't anti-gay enough for them. That's because they are trying to find a way to move towards support.
As for all your abusive spouse analogies, sounds like the only one bashing us is our "brothers and sisters" in the movement. It's hard to have the beliefs you've been ingrained with challenged. Just relax and let us do our job. Our goal is equality as well. Be grateful someone is willing to do the hard part of the job. And as has been noted, here we're the ones going after Romney for his turning on gays. We ignore Brownback and Huckabee because they don't stand a chance. Not worth our effort or yours.
Raging Rethuglican, we've already figured out your trolling. I already told you to get out, now do as you're told, troll.
I must really be making sense now for Damian to go off like this. ; ) What are you afraid of Damian? I'm not taunting here, I really want to know. If the goal is to win our rights, rationale people would want as many allies as possible from as many parts of society as we can get. Your attitude and demands are the same as you accuse the GOP of doing to gays and lesbians. Please explain how it is just and fair for one to do it but not another? I think both are equally against civil society. I'm sorry you feel so much anger. Someone really must have hurt you and that was wrong. But this is not helping you or anyone else. Relax, dude. Perhaps we can learn from each other.
AbbeyHoffmansGhost @ 68:
I don't know, but the image that comes to my mind is that during the week they condemn homosexuality and try to carry water for their religious-right nutball agenda, but then during the weekends they find a log cabin out on Brokeback mountain away from the wife and kids. While telling everyone they were on a business trip.
I am not trying to be antagonistic. I am sincerely interested in any evidence you can provide.
After researching Mr. Romney's Record I listed 5 specific things he voted on or did that were pro life as a govenor of a liberal state. (that does not sound oppurtunist to me.) If you have any proof that he did anything other than pro-life after his conversion while govenor please share it. True changes are proved by actions so me otherwise.
Log Cabin Republicans = The Official Ernst Röhm Fan Club.
Cartoon Coyote @ 74:
here's another one for them to go after...
Dyslectics Untie
I just saw Romney stammering and yammering, trying to get away from a kid with Cancer who uses pot asking if Romney would arrest him for using it medically.
Raging moderate @ 44:
Wow, someone actually had the audacity to mention that Phelps is a Democrat. Hey dude, Phelps is such a joke that he's his own straw man. Seriously, look up straw-man argument in any logic book, and you'll probably see ole' Reverend Fred there. Nice try, but no dice. We have some lovely parting gifts for you though.
Raging moderate @ 51:
Ragin, we're not ridiculing your point of view, we're ridiculing your weak-ass arguments. Go take a logic course before you come back in here spouting some non-sequiturial bullshit like you have been previously.
Raging moderate @ 42:
Uh, because dude, he was talking about your party, the Republicans, and not the Democrats. Your party is the one who's been hijacked by all the bible-thumping hatemongers who want to cram their morality down everyone else's throats.
I have a cousin who's gay, he has three brothers and a sister that all have spouses and kids. He wasn't raised any differently than the others. So why did he end up being the church organist? Literally, he plays the organ in church. I'll give you one hint Ragin, because homosexuality is genetic, something the Religious Right doesn't ever want to admit, because then their heads would explode at the thought that God created homosexuality, because he created homosexuals. Just like your height, your sexuality is probably 80% genetic, and 20% environmental. Same goes for rapists, pedophiles, bisexuals, bestials, asexuals, autosexuals, incest, and some fetishes; all genetic. Nature does not exist in a monolith, it always creates a range of variants within any species, this confers maximum robustness on the population as a whole, and ensures its long-term survivability.
Everyone asks what is a Log Cabin Republican? It's a reference to the fact that ole' Honest Abe himself, the father of the Republican party, may have been a homosexual, and since he grew up in a lumberjack shack, they used the name Log Cabin to describe themselves.
Moron 'Raging moderate' is using the same idiotic nonsense he used against me on the old 365gay.com boards THREE years ago. YAWWWWWWWWN!
Excuse me. I gotta go pee. I got a wide stance, in case you're interested, Raging.
Considering all the toe tapping going on and around the issue of homosexuality and considering incidents like this one...
I think Republicans should try passing an admentment getting rid of public toilets instead of banning gay marriage. Maybe they should mandate outhouses. You know, like back in Lincoln's day, the last good Republican president this country had.
Judging The Debates
CNN believes “The main event during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate in Michigan is Fred Thompson's debate debut.”
John Gibson on the Fox News Channel believes the anti-Republican bias of debate co-moderator Chris Matthew is the story, “How in the world can NBC put on a fair debate with a moderator like Matthews?”
When the debate starts, smart Republican voters will not care about the endless candidate trivia, or campaign stump theatrics. In order to make a realistic assessment of candidate’s beliefs and values, Republican voters will look for factual information. The sideshows of Thompson’s first debate and Matthew’s bias are inconsequential. The often snide and elitist Chris Matthews will be taken for what he is. Thankfully, we won’t see Wolf Blitzer asking candidates ludicrous questions to be answered a show of hands.
The pertinent subjects for the debate are 1. the war on terror, 2. the economy and how we compete with Asian and European nations, 3. preserving our culture and values, 4. excessive taxes and spending in Washington. The voters will look for the candidate with the experience and ethics covering each of these subjects.
Who will win this and future Republican debates? A forward looking, positive candidate who speaks clearly, in complete sentences, and who is impressive in explaining how he will approach these problems will carry the field. After all, the Republicans are really selecting a candidate that presents a clear choice and credibly to oppose Hillary Clinton on these key issues next year.
The log cabin homosexuals are a hoot. The GOP thinks those folks are going straight to hell, but the LC republicans still think they're invited to the GOP "big tent". They're about as welcome as black single mothers and immigrants.
