Howie Kurtz crosses into rival territory to pimp his book, Reality Show, with Bill O'Reilly to discuss the state of network news...but really, it was just an opportunity for Bill O'Reilly to declare that 1) Network news is liberal and soon to be obsolete; 2) Dan Rather is crazy for his law suit and his obsession with Bush's TANG records are neurotic; and 3) Katie Couric is a failure...and all Howie can do is smile. Betcha gonna sell lots of books from Falafel Guy's dwindling, aging demographic, Howie.

here is a question for all: if the media is so fucking 'liberal' then how does anyone explain what happened on 9/11 when the fucking shitstain called bush was 'documented' by the media as sitting there is his stupid chair, reading 'my pet goat', for over seven minutes after being informed by card that 'america is under attack' relative to the twin towers and this documentation was suppressed for over two years by THE ENTIRE, COLLECTIVE, MEDIA ? AND WAS NOT EXPOSED UNTIL MICHAEL MOORE'S FILM/ DOCUMENTARY ? the entire media operating as one to suppress this fact ? if the 'media' were so 'liberal' how could this be ? exactly WHO has the power to control the entire 'media' in this way ? who ?
I would think it is highly relevant when a "war president" lies about his military record.
If you do not believe the media is Liberal just open up a newspaper, turn on a tv or radio and you will be told it is.

The "media" stopped being liberal (if it ever truly was) in the '80s, with the rise of the "corporate media".
Bill's audience can't afford to buy Kurtz's book. They already spent their money buying cups and caps and shit that Bill sells.
Al Gore is going to speak sometime today but I'm not sure the exact time. Everything in me wants to get excited that he will say what we want him to, but I guess I know in my heart that he won't.
Kurtz was on Morning Joe this morning humping his book. Sounded like a sleeper to me. I'd rather get Colbert's book.
I don't have sound at work, so I wasn't able to listen to the clip, and I don't watch his program, so I'm using the summary above. I agree with part of point 1. Network news is indeed soon to be obsolete...if Howard Kurtz and others in the MSM don't start challenging "talking points" such as these. Not to do so is just unconscionable. That's what's making network news obsolete!
...and btw, I don't think Katie Couric is necessarily a failure...just because someone isn't #1 doesn't mean they're a failure. Wait and see...

(6) commenter, I saw a bit of that clip this morning and it was funny as hell. Bill says he invited some of his friends to watch it. I believe he said they were just regular "civilians". He said no one smiled or laughed at the show.
Since I haven't seen the show, I have no idea if it's funny or not. But from what I hear it sure is.
Couric IS a failure, but for completely different reasons than what Bill would consider.
And it's no wonder Kurtz just sits there and lets Bill go off. Kurtz is on the record stating that Fox News is entitled to lie about the news. Some media critic.

I'll never, ever, ever forget Howie Kurtz in his column,this spring, saying that "this is just sick" about some comment on Huff Po pertaining to the Vice-President's near-miss in a bombing incident- I think overseas. The commentator expressed their (I think facetious) interest in having seen Cheney actually "blowed-up" by the bomb.
This is a mild comment compared to the daily vitriol about Hillary etc etc.. over on LGF, The Free Republic Freaks, Malikinisms, GlennBeckville and that imbecile Glenn Reynolds...

Even the great Oprah allowed O'Reilly to appear on her show and use her to pull his nuts out of the fire during the Shawn Hornbeck firestorm. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Stephen A. Smith and Juan Williams genuflected to O'Reilly on his TV show and gave him a ghetto pass on the Harlem restaurant controversy. Kurtz on TDS was very telling. He pretty much sat there with a stupid grin on his mug and added nothing to the conversation. After seeing the interview I had no idea why anybody would buy his book. The potential is too great that the book would be like him; A waist of time.

When FOX gets no bid news contracts from the republican establishment to run stories it is odd how that makes FOX fair and Balanced. Especially when every third word spoken on FOX is to ridicule any opposing, difference of opinion. Including Democrats or those liberals. As evil as they are to Billy.

As for networks becoming obsolete, a look at viewership totals for their nightly news programs still shows a higher viewership than for the cable "news" programs. And when it comes to the Sunday morning high profile shows, NBC, CBS and ABC lead Fox and anything on cable. Sure, they're slowly declining, but cable isn't growing much either. In any case, we still lead the civilized world in having the dumbest, or most gullible, electorate. For which I blame both the MSM and the O'Reilly style talking heads.

I haven't seen HK's Daily Show appearance but I didn't think this was quite as described. I do think Kurtz said a few things. I think he's pretty wimpy and not particularly effective but - except for the end comment - he did say some stuff.
Sometimes the paragraph will say it was a real slapdown (I think of when Tim Robbins was on Maher) and it turns out not to seem that to me. I think there's some cases where it's eye of the beholder.
That said - BillO is his old tiresome self, trying to act like he is so much more important than he is. When will people get it.....how are his numbers, BTW?
Thats why the network ratings are down, Stewart's better then all three. That should not happen,but it's true.

The problem is most Americans are ignorant, that is because we have a negligent and indolent media and press in this country which has absolutely let down American democracy. All this right wing propaganda which is planned and organized and has dominated this country, the political debate for so many years talking about a liberal media. Well, you know and I know there is no such thing as a liberal media in the United States of America.
There is a right wing media and if you look where most Americans are now getting their news, that's where they're getting it. According to Pew 30 percent of Americans now say that their primary news source is talk radio which is 90 percent dominated by the right.
22 percent say their primary news source is Fox News, MSNBC or CNBC, all dominated by the right and another 10 percent, Sinclair Network which is the most right wing of all. That's the largest television network in our country. It's run by a former pornographer who requires all 75 of his affiliate television stations -- and this is where Mid-Westerners get their news, red state people get their news -- all of them have to take a pledge to not report critically about this president or about the war in Iraq.
Then the rest of us are -- the majority of Americans are still getting their news from electronic media and it's the corporate owned media and they have no ideology except for filling their pocket books and many of them are run by big polluters. All of them are run by giant corporations that have all kinds of deals with the government and are not going to offend public officials.
This all started in 1988 when Ronald Reagan abolished the Fairness Doctrine. The Fairness Doctrine said that the airwaves belong to the public. They were public trust assets just like our air and water and that the broadcasters could be licensed to use them but only with the proviso that they use them to promote the public interest and to advance American democracy. They had to inform the public of issues of public import. They had to have the news hours. None of those networks wanted to show the news because it's expensive, they lose money on it. They had to avoid corporate consolidation. They had to have local control and diversity of control. That was the requirement of the law since 1928.
Today as a result of the abolishment of that doctrine, SIX GIANT MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATIONS now control all 14,000 radio stations in our country, almost all 6,000 TV stations and 80 percent of our newspapers, all of our billboards and now most of the Internet information services, so you have SIX GUYS who are dictating what Americans have as information and what we see as news.
The news departments have become corporate profit centers, they no longer have any obligation to benefit the public interests, their only obligation is to their shareholders and they fulfill that obligation by increasing viewer ship. How do you do that? Not by reporting the news that we need to hear in to make rational decisions in our democracy but rather by entertaining us, by appealing to the prurient interests that all of us have in the reptilian core of our brain for sex and celebrity gossip. So they give us Laci Peterson and Michael Jackson and Kobe Bryant and we're today the best entertained and the least informed people on the face of the earth and this is a real threat to American democracy.
