Stephen Colbert updates us on his fledging presidential campaign as a Favorite Son of South Carolina.
Listen here, John “What Stephen Said”-wards, who cares if you’re the native son? I’m the favorite son. And if I’m not mistaken, sir, aren’t you the same guy who not two weeks ago criticized Barack Obama for stealing parts of your platform on the issues of health care, poverty and nuclear proliferation? Well, reminding South Carolinians I’m from their state is my entire platform; I got nothing else. So back off!

Is Stephen running as a Democrat, Republican, or something I've not yet guessed?
Keith @ 1:
All of the above.
He is the alpha and the omega.
Stephen is running as a democrat and a republican.
Since he's running in both parties, he's garenteed to win. just like the corporate whores that donate equal amounts to repug and demo candidates to keep their bases covered.
56 new places to put flag pins.
Wow. I think this is the only performance art I've ever really enjoyed. So damn surreal. I usually enjoy his show (when I had satellite) but did he really put in papers to run? Nice.
So he is drawing attention to and supporting Edwards by 'attacking' him. It is only in his mock outrage that he shows respect. Playing that character 24 hours a day is going to drive him insane yet.
Lordy, good luck to his wife...

Every poll suggests that Democrats favor Clinton, which is the problem with being an independent, you don't get to influence the primaries to any great extent. Depending upon how bad the Republican field is, meaning how weak their chances are, this time I may write in John Edwards, just to express my real preference. I am getting so sick of what we end up with when it is just too important to give our votes away. The Independents need to find a way to at least get a sense of whom we would like to vote for -- Edwards, Obama, Dodd, Kucinich, etc. -- so perhaps we could all rally around that candidate and make ourselves heard! The machines are too strong and they direct the money, which buys the ads, which influences the less informed voters, which then garners the votes to win the election! Dammit! I would almost rather vote for Colbert than for Clinton. She has changed since she has been a senator, and not for the better.

If you like surreal, you'll enjoy the fact that the Youth International Party nominated Pigasus the Immortal for President in 1968. Abbie Hoffman, Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan, and Paul Krassner.

Running as both a Democrat and a Republican?!?
Someone might wanna let those Ron Paulists who troll lefty blogs that Colbert's stealin' their tactics.
it was funny when he started this....now....not so much.To many real issues to deal with.maybe this wasn't such a great idea.Ya know Andy K....your absolutely right......but don't bother the paulististas.........that guy is certifiable
ok.....I ScRwd uP....PaULisTas....................................................................
you know if you spin Abby Road backwards.....it says paul is dead.
I don't quite understand the whole thing. What's the bloody point?
He has my vote
His act only works (IMO) when the faux conservative interviews (sarcastically) actual conservatives. Outside that one setting, I dont find it funny really. His performance in front of bush at the press club being the main example.
It was interesting to see that it cost more to run as a Republican. But I think it also shows that anyone could run for president, and that maybe doesn't have to be a politician but maybe a dairy farmer, like they elected one for the country of Bolivia?
anon @ 17:
The main example of how funny he is?
I don't think the target of his jokes thought it was funny, but most were laughing at them, and not with them.
I'm not amused.
FOX was talking today about the possibilities that he is going against the rules by declaring himself a candidate and not disclosing that his show is sponsored by Comedy Channel or some such bullshit.
I mean are they desperate or what? They said if he has broken the rules he could lose his show. In their dreams?
I really, really, really, really, want to see Colbert as a presidential candidate in the televised Republican candidates debate.
Please let that happen, please, please, please.
It's the the only thing that could top the White House Correspondents' Dinner of 2006.
colbert thinks everything is a joke
Wouldn't he get in trouble for trying to get his name to appear on the ballot as "Mitt Guliani" and "Hillary Clobama"? I'm pretty sure they frown upon deliberately misleading the voters that way...
pissed off patricia @ 21:
Must be talking about the equal time rule. Fox has Gulliani pimped by one of their prime time comics, Sean Hannity, they are doing the same thing but thinly disguised.
revulver @ 23:
Everything in the world, at some level, is funny. EVERYTHING!
I could, if I wanna risk gettin' banned from the site, type the filthiest joke in that I know. It concerns pedophilia. You might not laugh at it, but someone would because it's a funny joke- at a certain level.
Here's somethin' that's funny- people who have never once been paid fer one of their jokes criticizin' a staff of comedy writers (whose overall performance has been, in the whole, oustandin') who have made a livin' outta perfectin' their own craft.
Ya don't think this bit is funny? Fine. Not the funniest bit I've ever seen on this program, admittedly. But it beats the crap outta any attempts at humor made by Billo or Rush...Hell, this bit is funnier than the entire body of work of one Red Skelton.
Wait...... he's actually running for president? I thought he was just joking...... I'd just love to see him go on Rush Limbaugh's show and Bill O'Reilly's show and watch him tear those.... (insert expletitive here, lol) apart.
swarmofkillermonkeys @ 6:
Really? I thought he was 'light in the loafers."
Saint Stephen!
Strider @ 15:
The point is he had a book getting published so why not? That is how it works. Do you REALLY think that Guliani thinks he would be the best thing that ever happened to this country when he knows he managed to piss away all the New York good will from 9/11 in just a few years?
Of course not. He had a book coming out, and corporate sponsorship (lobbying, whatever) is a great way to become rich. Period. These aren't idealists. Colbert is pointing out that it is a joke to them. His 2 dimensional caricature of a human being is almost more sincere about his bid than the REAL candidates. It is absurd. So absurd, it SHOULD be pointed out. Funny or not. It happens to amuse me.
On the other hand, there is a long tradition of fake presidential candidates. Even Gracie Allen, comedian wife/partner of George Burns ran (for the "Surprise Party"... get it?) and actually got some presidential votes in 1940! Not surprisingly, she ALSO had a book coming out.
So lighten up already. If you want to mock a $400 haircut, big ears, or a laugh like a donkey mid-castration, that is what the comedians surrounding the election are for, like Colbert. Unfortunately, the papers carry this as news instead of the actual policy, so the comedians have to try to cover the policy instead. Maybe Colbert can flip this around again so that gossip is off of the NYT and Post and back in the domain of the comedian. The we adults might actually get to read dry, boring, but necessary policy columns instead. You know, so we can run the damn country like we were meant to.
Only slightly dated. That Gracie was a sharp one...
My take:
I think the Stephen Colbert show can be incredibly hilarious, sometimes so smart it's beyond funny, sometimes annoying and sometimes just silly.
I don't particularly like this bit because I think some people are dumb enough or celeb conscious enough to vote for him over John Edwards because it's schtick and - it's too scary out there to throw any votes away.
Colbert is the court jester of today,we all need him,perhaps.....sad really
Creepy youtube guy @ 28:
If so, you know something his wife and three kids don't. Like most comedians, he's probably a little bipolar though.
Moose @ 2:
