Tancredo's racism is such that he's the darling of the Malkin wing of the GOP. Americans want to secure the borders, but they also understand that we need true immigration reform and not some whacked out policy initiated by a man that called Miami a "Third World country.”
Let's not forget his "bombing Mecca," statements either. Rahm Emanuel should check this article out to understand that the US and even some at the GOP are rejecting Tancredo's type of immigration reform---which is no reform at all. And now tension is brewing between members of the Hispanic Democrats and House leaders.

The decisive political battle in the next 20 years is not between the Republicans and Democrats but is within the Democratic Party itself. One of two things will happen (or some unhappy middle ground.)
Either this whole "war on terra" thing is a perfect storm of stupidity between Dubya, the Muslim world and the larger secular world or we are digging a hole so deep we'll never climb out of it.
In the first case, we'll live through this nightmare and then stumble back to our self-involved sleep. The 70s was the "Me Me Me" decade and the 80s was the "Mine! Mine! Mine!" decade. iPods and Viagra will replace pet rocks and cocaine, but the dynamic will be the same.
In the second case, we won't survive our irrationality...or at least, this flavor of it. Toppling government after government as we chase smoldering-shod lunatics from airport to airport simply cannot be sustained. At some point, China will call the loans and we'll end up like Robert Downey Jr. in "Less Than Zero" ... sucking cock to pay off our drug dealer.
What will either of the two parties do in either of these cases? Nothing.
In the first case, we'll have another Morning in America and everyone will be reading Ayn Rand and getting high. As long as the party is in full swing, the parties will be in full swing.

Here's the deal, folks, America's borders are where they are today, so however unjustly you feel they were drawn originally, we have to deal with them as they are, and if we have any interest in remaining a free and prosperous nation, we have to control immigration, or dismantle our welfare state so that people no longer want to pour in here.
I have nothing but sympathy for people who are in such a desperate state that they have to climb over a fence or crawl through an underground tunnel and into the U.S. The Mexican government, rather than improving its own infrastructure, and lifting up its underclass, is instead printing up pamphlets to instruct its poor citizens on the best way to sneak over the border and leech off American social services.
People scoff and say glib things like "Oh, so you want to pick your own lettuce?" But the fact is that if there weren't such a deep pool of cheap, illegal labor, companies would have to pay American citizens a competitive wage to do just that.
The sooner we clamp down on the border and severely punish all U.S.-based business employing illegal labor, the sooner the people in the third-world countries from which immigrants are fleeing will take it upon themselves to improve their homelands rather than run away from them.

I suspect you've missed my point. The poster suggested rounding up everyone who has profited from the practice of hiring illegals and my suggestion is that, like it or not, we ALL fit into that category.
The higher suggestion here is that the so-called "illegal immigrant" crisis is, just as you suggest, merely a bargaining tool to keep that class of worker from having any rights.
It's a ruse. No one intends to rid this country of illegal immigrants. But if we pass draconian laws and make them all scared, that will keep them enslaved.
If we don't want to have open borders, the thing to do is not punish the horse, but dry up the creek so he'll seek his beverage elsewhere In other words, don't punish the immigrants themselves, punish those who exploit them (which I think was the original poster's sentiment.)
Better yet, work to help Mexico become not a horrible place to live and raise a family.
But there's a reason why this will never happen. There's a reason it's all going to be about driver's licenses and 400 mile fences. It's about keeping a population in fear, not about national security.

In 2006, the voters of America elected Democratic majorities to the Senate and House in order to end the occupation of Iraq and restore the Constitution of the United States. We, the Netroots, helped elect Democratic majorities with large contributions of money, time, and passion.
Unfortunately Congressional Democrats have surrendered to George Bush and Dick Cheney on all of the issues we care about most: Iraq, Iran, warrantless wiretapping, torture, and habeas corpus.
We recognize that "Bush Democrats" are primarily to blame for Democratic failures, and we will do
whatever we can to change their minds - or replace them with true Democrats in 2008. But we cannot wait until then to fix the urgent problems we face.
We will therefore begin a donor strike against the official fundraising committees for
Senate Democrats (DSCC) and House Democrats (DCCC) until our core demands are met.
We will instead contribute only to individual candidates who firmly support the values of the Democratic Party and the American people, as certified by BlueAmerica and Progressive Challenge 2008.

I do not object to the US having a strict immigration policy; there is nothing wrong with that. What I do object to is the demonizing of Hispanics because of Tancredo and others. We are constantly crowing about how wonderful our country is to the rest of the world, and how much better off people would be if they lived here. WTF do you expect other people to do when they hear that?
But I know 2 ways we can stop illegal immigration immediately:
1) Fine all companies that hire illegals $250,000 for EVERY illegal they hire - BAR NONE! NO EXCUSES! If the companies won't pay, the executives in charge go to jail, along with paying the fine.
2) Deny any benefits to anyone who is in this country illegally. No health care, no assistance - nothing. Even if a person is born here to parents who come here illegally, and that child is considered an American citizen because he or she was born on US soil, ONLY the child could receive any kind of basic benefit, not the rest of the family.
If illegals know that they will have no help and won't be able to get a job here there will be a very sharp decline in illegal immigration.
Also, this RW idea of shipping 12M illegals back to their home countries would be outrageously expensive, so we'd better think of some kind of amnesty, because rounding them up and shipping them back is just impossible.

When did I say anything about race? This isn't racism, it's international classism. The same principles would hold if Norway was to our south.
