On Wednesday's Countdown, Keith Olbermann and Air America's Rachel Maddow (who is apparently challenging Pat Buchanan's standing as MSNBC's permanent guest, more power to her) discuss CREW's recent report on the massive failures of the Department of Homeland Security.
You can find out more about DHS's failures on the new site Homeland Security for Sale, complete with this video, created by Brave New Films.

First of all, the word "Homeland" is creepy.
This all sounds like one of the biggest crime rings in the country. The administration created this deal and then people pass through it and onward to the other end where they load up on money. That money is our money. Should be called the Dept of Citizen Theft.
Quality starts at the top right?
Harried homeowners seeking mortgage relief from a new Bush administration hotline Thursday had to contend with a bit of temporary misdirection from the president himself.
As he announced his plan to ease the mortgage crisis for consumers, President Bush accidentally gave out the wrong phone number for the new "Hope Now Hotline" set up by his administration.
UPDATE: Anyone who dialed 1-800-995-HOPE did not reach the mortgage hotline but instead contacted the Freedom Christian Academy — a Texas-based group that provides Christian education home schooling material.
You can always count on the Bush to have his priorities straight. Large corporations here are billions to do nothing. Sick kids well..... your parents don't pray enough to Jesus.
How come none of the members of the 16 inteligence orgs. is coming out to say when he/she told bush about NIE report. There are always 2 needed to have a conversation.
Lier
Aw shoot, let's be efficient and cut to Der Department of the Chimpenfuhrer's Secure Homeland Success Stories:
.....
Done.
ALL the failures of Homeland Security!!!???
We're finally going to see a concrete example of what the term 'Googol' means'
Were we to hook a couple of Crays together, in tandem, we might get a printout before the '08 election.
Robert Greenwald always gets it right.
Especially creepy to have an American department of 'Homeland Security' headed by an Israeli citizen whose 'Homeland' is Israel.
Talk about a 'Conflict of Interest'.
fist!
Gasp, massive failures in bureaucracy! Good gosh, let's create more government to rectify them, shall we?
More "good news" from the black hole, aka Iraq:
$1b in military gear lost in Iraq
Vehicles, weapons gone; report details 'massive failure' of accountability.
Dr. Acula @ 11:
Any time anything is lost in Iraq, check Chalabi's pockets for mega bucks.
Someone should add up all the money that has been wasted on useless programs, lost in Iraq along with missing materials in Iraq and goddess knows how many others of things, like the Katrina programs. Money spent but money that never did what it was intended to do. I think we would all go insane if we saw the total of all those monies.
JackColeman@10 This isn't about big or small government dope. This is the most evil, Unamerican government in U.S. history. They have literally fucked over everyone.
pissed off patricia @ 1:
from the same people who brought you the 'PATRIOT ACT'
How does one BILLION dollars worth of equipment get "lost"?????????????????????
How do 10 MILLION emails get "lost"?
L.A. Confidential @ 2:
SO THAT 'GAFFE' WAS INTENTIONAL!
That "LAW" should be repealed.
Dr. Acula @ 15:
the same way EIGHT BILLION dollars in cash gets lost!
CoIntelPRo @ 16:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/12/06/bush-gives-out-wrong-hot...
Preacher Boob @ 8:
and they knew about the NIE before bush!?
Homeland Security = Legal standing for the "Shock Doctrine"
Jack Coleman @ 10:
No need to "create more government" (whatever that means). Just change the personnel, 'round about 2009.
CoIntelPro - I went to your website - where do those poll #'s come from?
L.A. Confidential @ 19:
exactly!
Dana Perino said today that bush could have been "more precise" about when he said he first heard about the new info in the most recent NIE. I guess that's one way of saying it. The rest of us know that he flat out lied.
They lie so much they don't believe that we'll notice. That CREW report is a perfect example. They have gotten away with so many crimes and lies that now they just don't think it matters. Same thing when Rove said the dems pushed us into Iraq.
Failure by design.
Dr. Acula @ 23:
they took the poll beginning with the 'debate season' and closed the voting a few weeks ago.
thanks for the credit, but that's their poll.
CREW is so off the mark here that they just need to shut the fuck up.
DHS doesn't need to be "reformed"or "fixed", it needs to be disbanded and it's members questioned under oath about it's nefarious activities!
All I got to say is Rachel Maddow is a breath of logical air.
Let's just rephrase that question to: What has the Dept. of Homeland Security ever done right?
Symes @ 28:
why do you snipe at the people who are showing you how wrong things are?
CoIntelPRo @ 27:
Aha, you're just linking to DFA's site. Gotcha.
CoIntelPRo @ 31:
Because they are showing the obvious, then they say that it needs to be reformed instead of disbanded.
The organization is an anathema to what we are supposed to stand for.
They do not need to be fixed. They need to be stopped.
Just what exactly is the "dept of homeland security" supposed to do? Besides changing the silly little threat level code, what the hell do they do?
I haven't seen Hardball yet, but if Chris' reaction to Mitt's speech this morning was any indicator, he will be drooling over his new BFF, Mitt.
pissed off patricia @ 35:
pop,
Please watch tweety so I don't have to. I've had all the spittle I can take.
pissed off patricia @ 34:
They are supposed to be our version of the Gestapo.
But since GW (thankfully this time) fucks up everything he touches it did'nt happen that way.
Instead we go another group of bureaucrats who don;t know their mission and aren't qualified to carry it out if it were explained to them.
Make them a foot note in history, disband them before someone figures out how to fix them.
Ever notice that whenever Chimpy says it's "a person of integrity" ,it's always someone with no integrity whatsoever? I'm sick to death of the corruption in this administration. I wish someone would impeach this son of a bitch .
I wonder if anyone will question bush about the "Breaking News" story they had on CNN today about the CIA videotaping an interrogation, complete with waterboarding. Hasn't bush said repeatedly "We don't torture?" BTW the tapes were destroyed in 05 because they didn't want the torturers to get in trouble.
I wonder if anyone bought the Romney bullshit this morning. He only said the word Mormon once. He said he believes in God but forgot to mention that he thinks he was in human form and that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri among other ridiculous things.
I wonder why all the headlines are touting bush for his "help" with foreclosures when his plan is going to help many. 1 out of 12 maybe. It will only help if you have a good credit rating and have been on time with your mortgage payments. How the hell can you be paying on time and be in foreclosure?
I wonder if you are all wondering the same things.
Homeland, like fatherland and motherland, is the lingo of dictators. Is it any wonder that DHS is a Stasi-like nightmare?
oops when his plan is going to help many should have read ISNT going to help many. I wonder why I don't proofread.
NBC and MSNBC cutting back, but "MSNBC's primetime programming - i.e., the shows hosted by Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Dan Abrams, as well as the documentary unit - are sacrosanct and won't be affected by any of the cuts."
Maybe Tucker and Scarborough may go?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/12062007/business/peacock_purge_42933.htm

Who is that? Lieberman?
If MSNBC had half a brain, they'd give Rachel Madow her own show. She'd outclass Matthews, Abrams, and Tucker--maybe but not necessarily in that order.
Mmmm. Rachel Maddow, she's hot.
At least the money didn't go to those horrible poor, single mothers for food or healthcare!!
God, I hate Cons with every fiber of my being.
For crying out loud. They did what they said they were going to do: "starve the beast so that we can drown it in a bathtub" : Grover Norquist. The "beast" is the last 100 or more years of progressive government that was the American paradigm. Progressive means that you spend taxpayer dollars, utilizing the government, on recognizable problems that don't go away on their own. Thats; the national park system, social security, workers rights, voting rights, racism, inadequate education, public housing, income protection for the disabled, environmental protection..actually protection from every sort of abuse of power that can occur. You get the picture. We progressives "stole" the country away from the robber barons of the 19th century, we stole slavery away from the deluded racists, we agreed to share the wealth to the point that at least no one had to suffer in the deepest sort of poverty. We stole it from those assholes and they've been pissed for a hundred years. We took what was rightfully theirs and they have been biding their time and setting this country up for the biggest bank heist of all history. These fucks have cleaned out the cash registers and stolen us blind. The horse is out of the barn and gone. They got less than a year left and then they will laugh their asses off as they walk out the door and away from this country. Shit I wouldn't be surprised if they are all gone by the time the newly elected (Democrat) president moves in. Our progressive country has in effect, been drowned in that bathtub that Norquist always talks about. And you know what we'll be doing? We'll be fighting over the scraps with all the troll types, they'll keep us busy enough, jabbering away, so that we wont have the time to track down all of these thieves. I love KO and Rachael is so alive and thoughtful. I just wish that their topic of discussion is how the American people got boned.
Roger Bixley @ 46:
Dude, what?
They should dump Buchanan. I think he lives there. He is on at all hours of day and night, and even manages Fox, NBC and I don't know where else.
He is chopping liver everywhere.
Backwoods Insurgent @ 48:
Had to correct one word.
Brawlin Dem @ 49:
Umm, she's hot. Yup.
Hot.
Janet @ 39:
The bush administration flat out refuses to say that waterboarding is torture so therefore they feel if they don't consider it torture, they can say they don't torture. Kind of like if they say the sky isn't blue, then we are supposed to agree, it isn't.
I agree with you on Mitt's speech. From what I heard it was a history sermon. Since I have no belief in a higher being, he sort of left me and my ilk out all together. I did hear a bit the other night about how the Mormon religion began and it did have some funky factors, but to me, all religions do.
As for the mortgage disaster, I am as confused as you are.
Mitt is going to be on Glenn Beck's show tonight. Sadly someone must be watching that show if Mitt feels his campaign would benefit by his being on it. I can't imagine what Beck's audience is made up of, the same people who watch BillO?
Janet, if you're still around this site, Kos has a post about the CIA tapes that were destroyed. Interesting stuff.
pissed off patricia @ 54:
I wonder if they'll do the secret
wacko nutjob bullshit religionMormon handshake.#48
Lewis Black got it right.
video at my site
Appalling... the whole homeland security concept.
#2
"President Bush accidentally gave out the wrong phone number for the new “Hope Now Hotline” set up by his administration"
Has Bush ever done anything right?
Rusty Shackleford @ 56:
Do they have one? I betcha Beck will be all totally a cheerleader for Mormonism. Fine by me, just don't expect me to care.
pissed off patricia @ 55:
Staff members of the 9/11 commission, which completed its work in 2004, expressed surprise when they were told that interrogation videotapes existed until 2005.
"The commission did formally request material of this kind from all relevant agencies, and the commission was assured that we had received all the material responsive to our request," said Philip D. Zelikow, who served as executive director of the Sept. 11 commission and later as a senior counselor to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
"No tapes were acknowledged or turned over, nor was the commission provided with any transcript prepared from recordings," he said.
I'm shocked I tell ya.
Symes @ 52:
I concur. Utterly HOT.
damn,, Rachel is everywhere
pissed off patricia @ 1:
As soon as Bush drops the first nuke on Teheran, the Homeland Security color is going to Mushroom Cloud/Taupe, with blood-red spots.
Soon afterward, when the first nuke explodes in D.C., the Homeland Security color is going to Yellow-Striped white, as DHS staffers run for their lives.
Rachel is looking great lately. She's freaking smart too.
Holly in Detroit @ 62:
A large chunk of that $1B in 'military equipment lost' in Iraq is accounted for by the 68 diplomatic cases loaded with gold bullion L. Paul Bremer forgot and left behind when he was precipitously rushed out of Iraq ahead of schedule to avoid assassination.
Quite a bit was shipped home as souvenirs by US servicepeople, more than one has a new, up-armored Hummer waiting for them at home, which they shipped, piece by piece.
Most of the rest can be found in Bin Laden's caves on the Pakistani border.
From its earliest conception the DoHS has never been about safety and security. It is only about consolidating police state control. This monster is going to have to be abolished and broken up if this country is ever to be restored to health and a free and democratic nation.
Count the failures in DHS. Count the inaction in Congress. Same malfeasance, same corruption.
In another victory fur volk und vaterland, retired Col. Ann Wright is sitting in jail tonight because she asked a question of her representatives. Don't we all feel safer tonight? I don't.
Go on over to Code Pink's website and show them some love.
www.codepinkalert.org
As regards Keith's question about, "Where are the radiation detectors, where are the airport screeners...where's the beef?", they're nowhere to be found. And, they will never be found because Bushco knows they were never a real threat to begin with. The "threats" that would have been addressed by these systems have never been anything other than devices invented and concocted out of whole cloth for the purpose of instilling fear on order to facilitate the consolidation of a totalitarian police state or as excuses to steal the People's tax money and transfer it into the hands of Bush's corporate cronies and co-conspirators. Bush is indifferent, because he knows that these so-called "threats" are bullshit.
The DoHS must be abolished.
CoIntelPRo @ 14:

clear skies initiative?
MSNBC Should give Maddow her own show. Yes, she's very liberal as am I . She's also very smart and funny and can talk to people she disagrees with in a way that is appealing.
I wish MSNBC would give Rachel her own show...
Now, my wife doesn't follow this shit like I do because, "it makes me gag..they are all liars and crooks" (nice eh?). So I ask her to watch this and shaking her head she asks the logical question. "do you mean to say, members of Congress or Senate or some section of the LAW hasn't seen this? Why has nothing been done?"
Walking away, she really summed it up by saying, "I guess you know now why a fool would want to be President for only $300 grand a year!!!"
I've always said, the Pres & VP should be accounted every two years of their term in office.
Jeff @ 76:
She doesn't have the legs or big tits or look like Jessica Simpson. That's UnAmerkan!
Too bad because the discourse I just heard between her and KO was without one hestitation in their exchange. That is brilliance!
If stupidity, ignorance and complacency were crimes. 50-60% of all Americans would be serving life in prision sentences! I thought the AIDS epidemic of the 80's was a threat to mankind........it's nothing compared to the potential long-term affliction that will result if everyone in the USA doesn't soon smarten up, grow some balls, and stand up to these thieves.
Keith and Rachel - a double-dose of smarmy and smug!
Jack Coleman @ 80:
JUST LIKE YOU! Only not smarmy and smug. That just leaves YOU.
Jack Coleman @ 10:
That is just what your hero G dub did. He rat fucked the country and stole an additional $4b from the tax payers to do so.
Chertoff failin' on purposel to get the public to want to privatize every govt service. "do you really want your health care to be given by people who run the DMV and DHS"-Clear Channelites
pissed off patricia @ 1:
I feel the same way.
It's kind of disturbing that a man who's grandfather supported Adolph Hitler, even has the balls to even use that term.
"Homeland". Sounds like something a goose-stepper would say.
It's very, very, creepy.
The folks currently running our country are amoral, murderous, thieving, sociopaths.
CoIntelPRo @ 18:
Okay...let me go over this again. 9 billion goes missing, six months later the UAE invests
8 billion in the Carlyle group. The UAE has a strange no reciept no records ability in its banking system. Don't forget...it was 9 billion going in, 8 billion going out. Thats a 10% money laundering fee, or at least very close too 10%. So who stole the the missing money?
Who is in charge of the Carlyle Group? Who was having lunch with Osama's brother on 911
when our world was highjacked? You guessed correctly...G.H.W.Bush. Former preznit,
former(maybe still)Dir. of the CIA, the guy on the plane leaving Dallas after Kennedy was shot,
with a guy who was a sharpshooter that later was part of Nixon cabinet on Daddy Bushes say so.
This family is the dirtiest in the history of the world. And when everything goes to hell in a hand basket they will retreat to their compound in Paraguay, that cost 8 billion, gee i wonder how they'll pay for that?????????????
diver99 @ 85:
And don't even get me started on GHWB's dad the Nazi financier.......
