It’s been days since we learned about another intemperate, intolerant remark from Mike Huckabee before he became a presidential candidate, so I suppose we were due for a new round of revelations.
David Corn took a look at a book Huckabee wrote as governor in 1998, called “Kids Who Kill: Confronting Our Culture of Violence,” and found a “fierce culture warrior.” Among the “cultural conflicts” Huckabee descried:
Abortion, environmentalism, AIDS, pornography, drug abuse, and homosexual activism have fragmented and polarized our communities.
A few pages later, the reader learns:
It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations — from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia.
Huckabee's book went on to denounce no-fault divorce, women’s equality in the workforce, and these perceived social ills:
The legal commitment of ideological secularism to any and all of the fanatically twisted fringes of American culture — pornographers, gay activists, abortionists, and other professional liberationists — is a pathetically self-defeating crusade that has confused liberty with license.
Remember, this is the same guy who pledged to "bring this country back together" at the last GOP debate.

That's been ever since somebody noticed that the majority of 'pro-life' people are also 'pro-death penalty.' I would pray to god to spare us from Shuckabee, too, except that there isn't one. (God, that is. Unfortunately, there certainly is a Shuckabee.) As is sometimes the case, wars are waged by people who find that they have more in common than they share in differences. This would certainly seem the case with the theocrats of the U.S. and the Islamic radicals of the Mideast. Were he to convert is Islam, Shuckabee would feel perfectly at home with the Taliban. The rest of the industrialized world is much more secular than the US, yet they have lower levels of teen pregnancy, abortion and homicide than we do.
If you want to take a look at a “degenerate culture” go to Eastern Pakistan or Afghanistan, both societies dominated by religious fundamentalist. Or another example is the deep south of the recent past. Many people in the South less than a few generations ago had strong families and put church and faith at the center of their lives. Yet many of these “Godly” people had no problem with subjugating African Americans. Indeed, in some parts of the South a lynching was a cause for a picnic. Imagine the gruesome scene: A family just out of church celebrating in front a fresh corpse hung on tree. (Gotta lover those old time family values, right?)
Of course, we recently have all these “Bible based believers” who turned out to be closet homosexuals or had sex with prostitutes, etc.
The bitter irony is that this book was written at a time when homicide rates and teen pregnancies and drug use were all in decline. But, apparently, Huckibee doesn’t mind letting a few inconvenient facts get in the way of a good invective.
