Regis Philbin watches Democracy Now!

Regis talks about meeting Amy Goodman on his show Live with Regis and Kelly (Dec. 19th). And that's really all there is to this but it's hilarious anyway.

Regis and Joy go to Phil Donahue & Marlo Thomas' annual Christmas party and Regis finds himself seated next to Amy Goodman, one of the most respected journalists in America -- who he's never heard of. So when he asks what she does Amy explains she has a show on PBS where she covers global events. Regis immediately finds himself feeling a touch inadequate for the conversation. In the end though the most unlikely of plugs:

REGIS: So I went to the annual Phil Donahue/Marlo Thomas Christmas party last night.

KELLY: Yes, tell me.

REGIS: Well, it’s just a lot of fun, you know. And the violins are playing

KELLY: It’s beautiful. They have a beautiful home, right?

REGIS: Yeah, it’s a penthouse up on Fifth Avenue. Just great.................(more)

...............................

REGIS: “What are you doing about global warming?” “We’re staying cold.” Woman was very interesting, so I tuned her in. She’s on from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning.

KELLY: Oh, fantastic!

REGIS: Channel 34, one of those PBS stations. And not only do they have it on TV, but then they take that hour, and they play it on, I guess, PBS radio. PBS have a radio thing, too? Yeah. They play it on the radio from 9:00 to 10:00.

KELLY: That’s great!

REGIS: In case you missed the 8:00 to 9:00. So anyway—

KELLY: That’s really good. So I’m going to tune her in, too.

REGIS: Yeah. Yes, Amy Goodman.

REGIS: ...it's refreshing!

This is a good reminder that most of America has little connection to solid sources of information like Amy Goodman's Democracy Now. It's a funny clip. But I'm glad he plugged her show. If Regis' demographic actually tunes in that'd be a great thing.
Here's to Marlo and Phil seating Regis next to more progressive people.

Shall we start a list of recommendations for them?

They're both incredible idiots!

To which Kelly Ripa responds:
"PBS...is there shopping involved with that? 'Cause I know in a democracy you go shopping, right? Who's Phil Donahue?"

VegasRage's picture

Yes Regis is refreshing! But it was painful to watch Kelly strain to find something, anything to say and interrupt Regis every time she had nothing to say because she is supposed to talk but doesn’t know how.

I agree with Dan at #2:

If this can bring in a wider audience to Amy Goodman, then hats off to Regis for bringing it up the way he did.

I've never been a fan of old regis, and don't even know what compelled me to watch this clip but....this clip plainly shows two individuals that are unaware becoming aware of the fact that they ARE unaware. Furthermore they then invite their unaware audience to share in their new awareness of being unaware.....lol.. Seriously though..this is something that is a bit late in coming but is very much needed for that middle america segment that is only now waking up to the realities of american foreign demestic policy. Let's hope this spreads. And now old regis can firmly claim he did his bit to help fellow americans...heh

Definitely sounds like a plan.

And you're quite right. 90% of America still believes there are 'rules' to prevent the "news" people from misinforming them, and if they 'heard it on the news'; then it must be fact beyond reproach. A plug for solid info is good stuff, especially from someone relatively well known and respected.

Or blogs. Or BBC. Or CNN International. Or Asia Times Online. Or the Reuters web site, before its chopped up and mistranslated on US TV.

"It’s a funny clip."
Actually it makes me sad.

Think about it - what % of US population gets their news from the idiot tube. Now compare this to the miniscule % that reads blogs on the internet - political blogs no less.

Hats off to Pacifica Radio and Democracy Now!

Very, very emotional clip. Is this how they conduct this show? Very emotional. Not very factual.

These people have been on since i was a teen, i think. Jesus! Had i watched tv all this time you could make a bar of soap out of my brain stem and noone would notice.

This gives me hope. All the jibber-jabber we all talk about over and over and over in our little circles is trickling down to the bottom feeders. Keep talking folks and eventually they will begin to replicate it as well. I hope Kelly tunes in, finds a cause, burns her bra and camps out with Terence McKenna in the fifth dimension...then she will have reached a time we call "the nineties."

I wish i was smart enough to see that. I see two pathetic people who are apparently very popular beating themselves over the head for never doing anything to an audience who adores them because they have done even less.

Offer all you want. I could give a 30 minute discourse about everything i know about bathtub mold and come up with more substance than this clip.

Sorta like a phalanx of Ralphies here.
People who thrash out against there own.

Jesus. All they did was talk up Amy.

Unless you're tories.

I am a big Amy Goodman fan. I find it outrageous that people of wealth, people who spend their lives going over the minutia of how to present infotainment to a vast audience of people are woefully unaware of their own ignorance. When suddenly they stumble across it they have an epiphany!

Well good, i hope this is the beginning of a learning curve for them. Unfortunately, i doubt it. I hope i am wrong.

I can't even tell what your bitch is about.
Regis Philbin? Casey Kasem? Amy Goodman?
With so much to bitch about why would you include any...or me?

I am not angry with you, Whizkid. I have had previous experiences with celebrities confronted with reality. They go one of two ways, in general. Either they look at things seriously and confront them and do something about them or they go to pieces as these two did in this segment of their show and then forget all about it.

Forever.

Don't look the gift horse in the mouth.
If somebody came by the shelter and freaked its better than had they said KMA.
You could be around Alzheimer patients or the poor. This administation could care less about either.
OK. We have clarified.
You get Regis or Casey or Martha Stewart to stop by... you show gracious welcome.
You endure whatever to accept all support.
With charity. With social cause. With politics. Accept the helping hand.
Right out of Saul Alinsky.

Well, maybe i am spoiled. We had Martin Sheen, Cher, Brian Denehey and may others stop by. Cher raised money and made a movie about a homeless man suspected of murder being inocent, Martin Sheen played the lead role in a tv movie about the group i worked with and went on to get arrested again and again in protests against homelessness, nukes and the school of the Americas. I won't mention the ones who cried and went home.

If Regis is serious about becoming educated then he will listen to or watch Amy Goodman and talk about what she says on his show. If he just listens and says nothing for a while that would be a plus, but after watching him i am wondering if he can make the adjustment.

When i was younger and deep into the homeless movement Gary Trudeau started writing in Doonesbury about homelessness and it was great writing and i thought to myself, "Shit! Homelessness will soon be a thing of the past! It has hit mainstream consciousness!"

Thirty years later not much has changed.

My point is, just because Regis just mentioned Amy Goodman to thosr many million viewrs in what i consider to be a very odd way does not mean that many of those veiwers will tune in. Worse, since those viewers have been conditioned to think about anything BUT reality by shows like this one, it will probably turn them off.

Whizkid, there is a saying about seeds. You can plant one but without nourisment, sun and water it can not grow. Reegis is not a seed. He is far from a nurturer. He was confronted with the reality that he has wasted countless hours on tv telling people how to be consumers. Unfortunately, he will get over it and go on. His viewers, for the most part will not even grasp what the hell he was talking about and those of us who have viewed this clip need not congratulate ourselves because we have gained nothing UNLESS by some miracle Reegis takes it upon himself to become informed and active.

I doubt it. He is making a lot of money doing what he has been doing for quite a while.

Speaking bout calling a TV network. They hate it.
Get the main switchboard and ask for the "producer" of a show.
They put you right through. They hate it when they pick up the phone and there you are fact checking every piece of BS they just aired.
Just dial 411 ask for FOX or whoever then the producer or news producer of a show.

There always have been and always will be a segment of the population out there oblivious to the peril we all face. The Constitution was writen in their midst, the Revolution occured around and without them and our civil liberties exist despite them.

I do not ask the trees for any more support than i would any of them.

Fox News should not be called. They should be tarred and feathered and riden out of town.

Talk about how they "plump up support for a man who was never elected".

That is beautiful. Slipping in something about Amy Goodman, a woman of real substance, on this chatty, goofball show. Those two are smarter than they appear. They know they can sneak a little truth in their corporate show if they frame it as "Gee, I met this nice lady who has a show. How neat!"

Nice job, Regis. You're a dork, but I love you for this.

I don't give them that much credit Hubcap Halo. If Regis had a real clue about what he was actually saying he'd probably not have mentioned it. That or his corporate owners would have nixed the entire conversation before he brought it up.
But I'm glad he got the opportunity to mention it to the sponge minions who watch their show. Who knows. Maybe some of them will watch and it will spark something in their brain.
Personally I expect a few of them to tune in to the show, discover what it is and get upset because it isn't an hour of ridiculous pap like the regis show.

Considering he can't figure that out on a taped TV show, I'm not that surprised here.

It seems there are some progressives who have lost their sense of humour. They were parodying themselves; when Kelly says, I don't know how you can stand to watch us, that was funny, it was a very funny bit, not side-splitting, but funny. Plus if they reached just one viewer to tune in to a more progressive show, great!!

So, to all my progressive friends who have forgotten how to laugh I think a steady diet of The Marx Brothers and Monty Python is in order, plus a little Bill Hicks so you can see it's possible to be funny and political at the same time.

Not true. I work with people who come from all types of socioeconomic, educational and intellectual backgrounds. There are some who are beyond hope, but there are many others (the majority) who really do want to make sense of the disasters that have befallen them. If some of these people are encouraged by the likes of talk show hosts to listen to people like Amy Goodman, that's fine with me. They do want to know why things have gotten so bad. They have lost faith in the loud mouth radio hosts, FOX and mainstream media. Your post implies most people are zombies, most people are not.

People criticizing Philbin and Ripa for their style of show are missing the mark. They host a morning talk show that has little if any political bent. Politics aren't a part of that formula. As much as we all are concerned and involved in our various causes, some things do exist as simple entertainment. Regis and Kelly fall into this category. Criticizing them for the content of their show is pointless. It's not intended to feature politics.

If you read the transcript, you'd see even Regis is aware enough to admit to, and self-deprecatingly joke about, his lack of knowledge about world events. But then goes on to plug a very good media source in Democracy Now. Instead of criticizing a talk-show host for being a talk-show host, we should be grateful Democracy Now got such a wide-audience plug, and be coming up with ways to continue this type of thing.

Also, props to Phil Donahue and Margot Thomas for setting the stage.

I thought it was hilarious, they debased themselves quite cleverly and plugged a "liberal" media source. You hyper-critical folks need to consider at least a low-dose Xanax prescription really. Are you that tightly wound? I feel sorry for you.

I don’t know . . .

I thought this was undoubtedly one of the most enlightening clips of Regis and Kelly that I have ever seen..

They pointed out that they are better known than most commentators, because they are on television all the time, but compared to some of their lesser known competitors, they know nothing.

When the president of the country is in the same position, this may not seem to be such a damning confession, however, as an indictment of the people who are responsible for programming the networks, it is a most devastating admission, especially during a time of war.

As a snippet of a program aimed at a demographic with which I have little contact, this clip was far less depressing than previously, when C&L posted clips from The View.

It's a sad statement of the reality of mainstream media that they would be so uninformed as to the existence of meaningful programming.

Regis is smart enough to know a thing or two about Iraq if he mentions Phil Donahue's documentary on it, which WILL be an honest and forthright examination of this war. You can bet on it. Phil Donahue, to date, has given perhaps the best televised argument against the war in Iraq when he made Bill O'Reilly sound all the more foolish in some rant filled, finger pointing tirade he threw on "The Factor" in defense of it. Donahue just made his argument so convincingly, it was a superb job

Donahue said in an interview that his upcoming documentary "Body of War" is about a soldier, Tomas Young, who was shot during the battle of Sadr City [the same battle that cost Casey Sheehan his life]. The shot paralyzed him from the waist down. Afterwards, he began to question why the U.S. went to war against Iraq and has now become an outspoken critic of the occupation. Surprisingly, Fox News. com, which has seen the film, has praised the documentary, saying that it "works" on a number of levels.

That was a cute clip. A simultaneously profound revelation for the hosts.

Hey, it's free advertising. And really, Regis sounded pretty intelligent to me. Give the guy some credit. He's just doing his job and sneaking in a little light along the way.

What's the name of the planet these beings come from?

Philbin. The planet Philbin. It orbits a star called Regis Gigantum in the constellation of the Great Toad.

PBS radio??? Does Regis get out much? Guess not.

That was great. That was the best plug I've ever seen. Anyone can preach to the choir, but to employ the Socratic method with such mastery of self-deprecation and deference to their audience's taste - now that just takes someone very special.

I agree with some people here needing Xanax. If you honestly think that a human interest variety show that covers top selling baby toys and haute couture socialites is the equivalent of The Factor because they don't decry the Iraq war... you need a vacation, some time away... maybe just sit down and watch Regis for a change of pace? Just a suggestion... before your head explodes.

I recall the time many years ago when I was introduced to the work of Amy Goodman. It was like walking through a door into another world. What a revelation! What joy! I've been hooked ever since. My hope is that Regis, Kelly and any number of their audience can experience the same.

If anything, these guys are the opposite of the in-your-face redneck style forum that is pervasive throughout the US media. People around the world think that American news is a circus side show. These two seem to actually have standards, tact, and professionalism.

Do you honestly believe they had a "revelation" on air that they know nothing? Come on now... at one point Kelly even holds up the cue cards. This was part of their appeal to their audience, not to insult them but to gently nudge them to find out about world events. The fact that they gave out a plug to PBS on commercial network television is remarkable in it's own right. I don't see that very often. He gave out the airtime for Democracy now *several* times in a style that reminded me of how pastors oftentimes plug church services. "8 to 9... and if you miss the 8 to 9, there's also a 9-10" Implies we should make this part of the schedule, tells us how long it will take, and presents an alternative that gives us even less excuse not to do it. That's how you plug, folks.

But anyway, if I wanted to add some class to the MSM, Regis could stay. He's not the problem. The problem is that we have to get our news from the Colbert Report and the Daily Show in this country, as wonderful as they are, that's really the problem.

So Regis wants to be informed, to hear something other than Corporate pap. Good for him.

"Amy explains she has a show on PBS where she covers global events."

And . . . ?

Isn't it sad? Shows how the wealthy people are not in touch with reality, nor do they care. These two people do not represent most of America. These two people do not represent the norm, or middle class America. Who are these people that watch these two idiots?

It reminds me back when fomer President Bush Sr was President and he was surprised to see computerized registers in grocery stores. They had been out for the l2 years but it was the first time he had ever seen them.

A gentle nudge which is really quite effective promotion. Free ad for Democracy Now complete with options as to time slots and media.

Kelly's father is a Democratic politician in South Jersey. He is a Freeholder (County commissioner for you non- New Jersey people. Before that he was active with the unions.

I wish Kelly would know more about what her father stands for.

Is Kelly Ripa really stupid like that or is it just a character she's playing?

She'd have to be a little more shrewd I'd assume to get that job... so I'm guessing it's an act? Or a joke I'm not getting?

I wonder the same thing. Ripa hosted SNL a few years ago, and did a great job. Totally upended my opinion of her.

As my girlfriend and I originally watched the clip, she commented on Ripa's job requirements by referring to a book Joey Heatherton had written and the comments on Regis therein. (I don't recall Heatherton ever having been one of Regis's sidekicks but then I've never followed his show.) Heatherton allegedly wrote the job overtly entailed being a sweet fluffyheaded blonde and more or less subserviently demurring to Regis, and so on.

...Preparing to mention it here, I brought this conversation up and my lady further commented, 'Look what happened to Kathy Lee Griffith...' (??? -I've no clue, and she's rolled over back to sleep...)

The Truth's picture

The only reason why they're giving Amy props is because their producers know bloggers like John will promote their show by writing about them, to which they'll have more viewers to dumb down with nonsense.
